Evolutionary studies that compare galaxy structure as a function of redshift are complicated by the fact that any particular galaxy's appearance depends in part on the rest-frame wavelength of the observation. This leads to the necessity for a "morphological k-correction" between different pass-bands, especially when comparing the rest-frame optical or infrared (IR) to the ultraviolet (UV). This is of particular concern for high redshift studies that are conducted in the rest-frame UV. We investigate the effects of this "band-pass shifting" out of the UV by quantifying nearby galaxy structure via "CAS parameters" (concentration, asymmetry, and clumpiness). For this study we combine pan-chromatic data from the UV through the near-IR with GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) data of 2073 nearby galaxies in the "NUV" (~230 nm) and 1127 in the "FUV" (~150 nm), providing the largest study of this kind in the mid- to far-UV. We find a relationship between the CAS parameters and observed rest-frame wavelength that make galaxies appear more late-type at shorter wavelengths, particularly in the UV. The effect is strongest for E/S0 galaxies in the far-UV, which have concentrations and asymmetries that more resemble those of spiral and peculiar/merging galaxies in the optical. This may be explained by extended disks containing recent star formation. Here we also release the CAS values of the galaxies imaged in GALEX NUV and FUV for use in comparisons with deep HST imaging and JWST in the future.
New challenges in the modelling of galaxy spectra are bound to emerge as upcoming telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope will allow us to detect galaxies at fainter flux levels and higher redshifts than ever before. Here, we highlight three modelling problems that may become relevant for upcoming observations in the rest-frame ultraviolet/optical at the high-redshift frontier: stellar initial mass function sampling effects, Population III signatures and the leakage of ionizing radiation into the intergalactic medium.

We present a multiwavelength morphological analysis of star forming clouds and filaments in the central ($< 50$ kpc) regions of 16 low redshift ($z<0.3$) cool core brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). New Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of far ultraviolet continuum emission from young ($\sim 10$ Myr), massive ($> 5$ \Msol) stars reveals filamentary and clumpy morphologies, which we quantify by means of structural indices. The FUV data are compared with X-ray, Ly$α$, narrowband H$α$, broadband optical/IR, and radio maps, providing a high spatial resolution atlas of star formation locales rel…
We show a comparison of the rest-frame UV morphologies of a sample of 162 intermediate redshift (median redshift 1.02) galaxies with their rest-frame optical morphologies. We select our sample from the deepest near-UV image obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) using the WFPC2 (F300W) as part of the parallel observations of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field campaign overlapping with the HST/ACS GOODS dataset. We perform single component Sersic fits in both WFPC2/F300W (rest-frame UV) and ACS/F850LP (rest-frame optical) bands and deduce that the Sersic index $n$ is estimated to be smaller in…
Looking for bright galaxies born in the early universe is fundamental to investigating the Epoch of Reionization, the era when the first stars and galaxies ionized the intergalactic medium. We utilize Hubble Space Telescope pure parallel imaging to select galaxy candidates at a time 500 to 650 million years after the Big Bang, which corresponds to redshifts z ~ 8-10. These data come from the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies Survey (BoRG) Cycle 22 dataset, which consists of pure-parallel imaging in ~ 90 different lines of sight that sum up to an area of ~ 420 arcmin^2. This survey uses five fil…
Connecting the observed rest-ultraviolet (UV) luminosities of high-$z$ galaxies to their intrinsic luminosities (and thus star formation rates) requires correcting for the presence of dust. We bypass a common dust-correction approach that uses empirical relationships between infrared (IR) emission and UV colours, and instead augment a semi-empirical model for galaxy formation with a simple -- but self-consistent -- dust model and use it to jointly fit high-$z$ rest-UV luminosity functions (LFs) and colour-magnitude relations ($M_{\mathrm{UV}}$-$β$). In doing so, we find that UV colours evolve …

For the extremely bright lensed galaxy SDSS J1723+3411 at z=1.3293 , we analyze spatially integrated MMT, Keck, and Hubble Space Telescope spectra that fully cover the rest-frame wavelength range of 1400 to 7200 Angstroms. We also analyze near-IR spectra from Gemini that cover H alpha for a portion of the lensed arc. We report fluxes for 42 detected emission lines, and upper limits for an additional 22. This galaxy has extreme emission line ratios and high equivalent widths that are characteristic of extreme emission-line galaxies. We compute strong emission line diagnostics from both the rest…
We present the results of a comparative study of the rest-frame optical and rest-frame ultraviolet morphological properties of 117 star-forming galaxies (SFGs), including BX, BzK, and Lyman break galaxies with B<24.5, and 15 passive galaxies in the region covered by the Wide Field Camera 3 Early Release Science program. Using the internal color dispersion (ICD) diagnostic, we find that the morphological differences between the rest-frame optical and rest-frame UV light distributions in 1.4<z<2.9 SFGs are typically small (ICD~0.02). However, the majority are non-zero (56% at >3 sigma) and large…
We present the rest-frame UV wavelength dependence of the Petrosian-like half-light radius ($r_{50}$), and the concentration parameter for a sample of 198 star-forming galaxies at 0.5 < z < 1.5. We find a ~5% decrease in $r_{50}$ from 1500 Å to 3000 Å, with half-light radii at 3000 Å ranging from 0.6 kpc to 6 kpc. We also find a decrease in concentration of ~0.07 (1.9 < $C_{3000}$ < 3.9). The lack of a strong relationship between $r_{50}$ and wavelength is consistent with a model in which clumpy star formation is distributed over length scales comparable to the galaxy's rest-frame optical ligh…
About 6% of Radio Galaxies (RG) can reach linear sizes larger than 0.7 Mpc, and are then classified as Giant Radio Galaxies (GRG). The conditions that make possible the formation of such big structures is still not clear - either core accretion properties or environmental factors. Recent studies have shown that GRG can be up to four times more abundant in hard X-ray selected (i.e. from INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT at >20 keV) RG samples. Moreover, a high fraction of young radio sources found in their cores suggests a recently restarted activity, as suggested from the discrepancy between the mea…
The fraction of ionizing photons that escape high-redshift galaxies sensitively determines whether galaxies reionized the early universe. However, this escape fraction cannot be measured from high-redshift galaxies because the opacity of the intergalactic medium is large at high redshifts. Without methods to indirectly measure the escape fraction of high-redshift galaxies, it is unlikely that we will know what reionized the universe. Here, we analyze the far-ultraviolet (UV) H I (Lyman series) and low-ionization metal absorption lines of nine low-redshift, confirmed Lyman continuum emitting ga…
We have observed a sample of 14 nearby ($z \sim 0.03$) star-forming blue compact galaxies in the rest-frame far-UV ($\sim1150-2200 Å$) using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. We have also generated a grid of stellar population synthesis models using the Starburst99 evolutionary synthesis code, allowing us to compare observations and theoretical predictions for the SiIV_1400 and CIV_1550 UV indices; both are comprised of a blend of stellar wind and interstellar lines and have been proposed as metallicity diagnostics in the UV. Our models and observations both demons…
We present a rest-frame ultraviolet analysis of ~120 z~3.1 Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDF-S). Using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images taken as part of the Galaxy Evolution From Morphology and SEDS (GEMS) survey, Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), and Hubble Ultradeep Field (HUDF) surveys, we analyze the sizes of LAEs, as well as the spatial distribution of their components, which are defined as distinct clumps of UV-continuum emission. We set an upper limit of ~1 kpc (~0.1") on the rms offset between the centroids of the continuum and…
We applied the image-based approach with a convolutional neural network model to the sample of low-redshifts galaxies with $-24^{m}<M_{r}<-19.4^{m}$ from the SDSS DR9. We divided it into two subsamples, SDSS DR9 galaxy dataset and Galaxy Zoo 2 (GZ2) dataset, considering them as the inference and training datasets, respectively. As a result, we created the morphological catalog of 315782 galaxies at 0.02<z<0.1, where morphological five classes and 34 detailed features (bar, rings, number of spiral arms, mergers, etc.) were first defined for 216148 galaxies (inference dataset) by the image-based…
We present an analysis of the morphological classification of 89 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) from the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) sample using non-parametric coefficients and compare their morphology as a function of wavelength. We rely on images obtained in the optical (B- and I-band) as well as in the infrared (H-band and 5.8$μ$m). Our classification is based on the calculation of $Gini$ and the second order of light ($M_{20}$) non-parametric coefficients which we explore as a function of stellar mass ($M_\star$), infrared luminosity ($L_{IR}$) and star formation r…
We consider an all-sky sample of 1029 Local Volume (LV) galaxies situated within a distance of 11 Mpc. Their majority have precise distances, estimates of hydrogen mass fraction and star-formation rate derived from far-ultraviolet or Halpha fluxes. To describe an environment, we attribute two dimensionless values: the density contrast created by the most significant neighbour and the local density contrast produced by all neighbours within a separation of 1 Mpc. The hydrogen mass fraction exhibits a weak effect of HI deficiency being the most pronounced for dwarf irregular galaxies. The specif…

We report on a Hubble Space Telescope search for rest-frame ultraviolet emission from the host galaxies of five far-infrared-luminous $z\simeq{}6$ quasars and the $z=5.85$ hot-dust free quasar SDSS J0005-0006. We perform 2D surface brightness modeling for each quasar using a Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo estimator, to simultaneously fit and subtract the quasar point source in order to constrain the underlying host galaxy emission. We measure upper limits for the quasar host galaxies of $m_J>22.7$ mag and $m_H>22.4$ mag, corresponding to stellar masses of $M_\ast<2\times10^{11}M_\odot$. These stella…
In this investigation, we determined the Concentration (C) and Asymmetry (A) parameters in a sample of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDG) or candidate galaxies. Most of the galaxies in the sample were found to be in a very precise region of the C-A plane, which clearly separates them from other galaxies. In addition, the stellar mass ($M_{star}$) and the star formation rate ($SFR$) in the sample were determined using optical images and GALEX observations. The main results are: the $M_{star}$ and the $SFR$ in the TDG sample do not follow a linear correlation with the $C$ and $A$ respectively, as observ…
We measure the near-UV (rest-frame $\sim 2400$Å) to optical color for early-type galaxies in 12 clusters at $0.3 < z < 1.0$. We show that this is a suitable proxy for the more common far-ultraviolet bandpass used to measure the ultraviolet upturn and find that the upturn is detected to $z=0.6$ in these data, in agreement with previous work. We find evidence that the strength of the upturn starts to wane beyond this redshift and largely disappears at $z=1$. Our data is most consistent with models where early-type galaxies contain minority stellar populations with non-cosmological helium abundan…
We used the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to observe the semi-forbidden CIII] emission in Green Pea galaxies at 0.13 < z < 0.3. We detect CIII] emission in 7/10 galaxies with CIII] equivalent widths that range from 2-10Å~. The observed CIII] emission line strengths are consistent with the predictions from photoionization models which incorporate the effects of binary stellar evolution with young stellar ages < 3-5 Myrs, and high ionization parameters (logU > -2). The hard ionizing radiation from young massive stars, and high nebular temperature…
We present the results of a study investigating the sizes and morphologies of redshift 4 < z < 8 galaxies in the CANDELS GOODS-S, HUDF and HUDF parallel fields. Based on non-parametric measurements and incorporating a careful treatment of measurement biases, we quantify the typical size of galaxies at each redshift as the peak of the log-normal size distribution, rather than the arithmetic mean size. Parameterizing the evolution of galaxy half-light radius as $r_{50} \propto (1+z)^n$, we find $n = -0.20 \pm 0.26$ at bright UV-luminosities ($0.3L_{*(z=3)} < L < L_*$) and $n = -0.47 \pm 0.62$ at…
We present a study of a sample of 254 clusters from the SDSS-DR7 Yang Catalog and an auxiliary sample of field galaxies to perform a detailed investigation on how galaxy quenching depends on both environment and galaxy stellar mass. Our samples are restricted to 0.03$\leq$z$\leq$0.1 and we only consider clusters with $\rm log(M_{halo}/M_{\odot}) \geq 14$. Comparing properties of field and cluster galaxies in the Blue Cloud, Green Valley and Red Sequence, we find evidence that field galaxies in the red sequence hosted star formation events $\rm 2.1 \pm 0.7$ Gyr ago, on average, more recently th…
Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) near-infrared high-resolution imaging from the 3D-HST survey, we analyze the morphology and structure of 502 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs; $L_{\rm IR}>10^{12}L_{\odot}$) at $1<z<3$. Their rest-frame optical morphologies show that high-redshift ULIRGs are a mixture of mergers or interacting systems, irregular galaxies, disks, and ellipticals. Most of ULIRGs in our sample can be roughly divided into merging systems and late-type galaxies (Sb$-$Ir), with relatively high $M_{20}$ ($>-1.7$) and small Sérsic index ($n<2.5$)…
Brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) are usually quiescent, but many exhibit star formation. Here we exploit the opportunity provided by rest-frame UV imaging of galaxy clusters in the CLASH (Cluster Lensing and Supernovae with Hubble) Multi-Cycle Treasury Project to reveal the diversity of UV morphologies in BCGs and to compare them with recent simulations of the cool, star-forming gas structures produced by precipitation-driven feedback. All of the CLASH BCGs are detected in the rest-frame UV (280 nm), regardless of their star-formation activity, because evolved stellar populations produce a mo…
We use ultraviolet imaging taken with the XMM-Newton Optical Monitor telescope (XMM-OM), covering 280 square arcminutes in the UVW1 band (effective wavelength 2910 Angstroms) to measure rest-frame ultraviolet (1500 Angstrom) luminosity functions of galaxies with redshifts z between 0.6 and 1.2. The XMM-OM data are supplemented by a large body of optical and infrared imaging to provide photometric redshifts. The XMM-OM data have a significantly narrower point-spread-function (resulting in less source confusion) and simpler K-correction than the GALEX data previously employed in this redshift ra…
We study the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) variability (rest frame wavelengths 500 - 920 $Å$) of high luminosity quasars using HST (low to intermediate redshift sample) and SDSS (high redshift sample) archives. The combined HST and SDSS data indicates a much more pronounced variability when the sampling time between observations in the quasar rest frame is $> 2\times 10^{7}$ sec compared to $< 1.5\times 10^{7}$ sec. Based on an excess variance analysis, for time intervals $< 2\times 10^{7}$ sec in the quasar rest frame, $10\%$ of the quasars (4/40) show evidence of EUV variability. Similarly, for …

We present a robust measurement and analysis of the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function at z=4-8. We use deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging over the CANDELS/GOODS fields, the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and the Year 1 Hubble Frontier Field deep parallel observations. These surveys provides an effective volume of 0.6-1.2 x 10^6 Mpc^3 over this epoch, allowing us to perform a robust search for faint (M_UV=-18) and bright (M_UV < -21) galaxies. We select candidate galaxies using a well-tested photometric redshift technique with careful screening of contaminants, finding a sample of 7446 …
We present a photometric analysis of 65 galaxies in the rich cluster Abell 1689 at $z=0.183$, using the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys archive images in the rest-frame $V$-band. We perform two-dimensional multi-component photometric decomposition of each galaxy adopting different models of the surface-brightness distribution. We present an accurate morphological classification for each of the sample galaxies. For 50 early-type galaxies, we fit both a de Vaucouleurs and Sérsic law; S0s are modelled by also including a disc component described by an exponential law. Bars of S…
We present a rest-frame ultraviolet morphological analysis of 108 z=2.1 Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDF-S) and compare it to a similar sample of 171 LAEs at z=3.1. Using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images from the Galaxy Evolution from Morphology and SEDs survey, Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey, and Hubble Ultradeep Field, we measure size and photometric component distributions, where photometric components are defined as distinct clumps of UV-continuum emission. At both redshifts, the majority of LAEs have observed half-light radii <~ 2 kpc,…
We present early results regarding the morphological and structural properties of galaxies seen with the James Webb Space Telescope at $z > 3$ in the Early Release Observations of SMACS 0723, a galaxy cluster at $z=0.39$. We investigate, for the first time, the optical morphologies of a significant number of $z > 3$ galaxies with accurate photometric redshifts in this field to determine the form of galaxy structure in the relatively early universe. We use visual morphologies and \textsc{Morfometryka} measures to perform quantitative morphology measurements, both parametric with light profile f…
We use the GALEX data of the GUViCS survey to construct the NUV luminosity function of the Virgo cluster over ~ 300 deg.2, an area covering the cluster and its surrounding regions up to ~ 1.8 virial radii. The NUV luminosity function is also determined for galaxies of different morphological type and NUV-i colour, and for the different substructures within the cluster. These luminosity functions are robust vs. statistical corrections since based on a sample of 833 galaxies mainly identified as cluster members with spectroscopic redshift (808) or high-quality optical scaling relations (10). We …
[abridged] New near-infrared surveys, using the HST, offer an unprecedented opportunity to study rest-frame optical galaxy morphologies at z>1 and to calibrate automated morphological parameters that will play a key role in classifying future massive datasets like EUCLID or LSST. We study automated parameters (e.g. CAS, Gini, M20) of massive galaxies at 1<z<3, measure their dependence on wavelength and evolution with redshift and quantify the reliability of these parameters in discriminating between visually-determined morphologies, using machine learning algorithms. We find that the relative …
High-redshift quasars typically have their redshift determined from rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) emission lines. However, these lines, and more specifically the prominent C IV $λ1549$ emission line, are typically blueshifted yielding highly uncertain redshift estimates compared to redshifts determined from rest-frame optical emission lines. We present near-infrared spectroscopy of 18 luminous quasars at $2.15 < z < 3.70$ that allows us to obtain reliable systemic redshifts for these sources. Together with near-infrared spectroscopy of an archival sample of 44 quasars with comparable luminositie…
We present 46 rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra of 28 local starburst and star-forming galaxies which were observed with the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) and the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) at a spectral resolution of a few 100 km/s. We compare the HST spectra with lower resolution International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra of the same galaxies and find systematic differences: the bright star clusters targeted in HST's ~1 arcsec apertures provide about 15% of the starburst luminosity traced by IUE's 10 arcsec by 20 arcsec aperture;…
We investigate the physical and morphological properties of LBGs at z ~2.5 to ~3.5, to determine if and how they depend on the nature and strength of the Lyalpha emission. We selected U-dropout galaxies from the z-detected GOODS MUSIC catalog, by adapting the classical Lyman Break criteria on the GOODS filter set. We kept only those galaxies with spectroscopic confirmation, mainly from VIMOS and FORS public observations. Using the full multi-wavelength 14-bands photometry, we determined the physical properties of the galaxies, through a standard spectral energy distribution fitting with the up…

Galaxy morphology is a fundamental quantity, that is essential not only for the full spectrum of galaxy-evolution studies, but also for a plethora of science in observational cosmology. While a rich literature exists on morphological-classification techniques, the unprecedented data volumes, coupled, in some cases, with the short cadences of forthcoming 'Big-Data' surveys (e.g. from the LSST), present novel challenges for this field. Large data volumes make such datasets intractable for visual inspection (even via massively-distributed platforms like Galaxy Zoo), while short cadences make it d…
We present RCSED, the value-added Reference Catalog of Spectral Energy Distributions of galaxies, which contains homogenized spectrophotometric data for 800,299 low and intermediate redshift galaxies (0.007<z<0.6) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic sample. Accessible from the Virtual Observatory (VO) and complemented with detailed information on galaxy properties obtained with the state-of-the-art data analysis, RCSED enables direct studies of galaxy formation and evolution during the last 5Gyr. We provide tabulated color transformations for galaxies of different morpholo…
Using high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging data, we perform a visual morphological classification of $\sim 36,000$ galaxies at $z < 1$ in the DEVILS/COSMOS region. As the main goal of this study, we derive the stellar mass function (SMF) and stellar mass density (SMD) sub-divided by morphological types. We find that visual morphological classification using optical imaging is increasingly difficult at $z > 1$ as the fraction of irregular galaxies and merger systems (when observed at rest-frame UV/blue wavelengths) dramatically increases. We determine that roughly two-thirds of the to…
