Rapid intranight variability of continuum and polarization in blazars is a very useful tool to probe the beaming of a relativistic jet and the associated population of the relativistic particles. Such intranight variability in the rest-frame optical continuum has been carried out extensively, but there is a scarcity of such information in the rest-frame ultra-violet (UV), where the cause of variability might be due to {a} secondary population of relativistic particles. To fill this gap, recently in Chand et al. (2022) we reported for the first time intranight variability study of a sample of high-$z$ blazars so that the monitored optical radiation is their rest-frame UV radiation. Here we discuss in detail the implication of this investigation with a proper comparison of high-$z$ blazar samples with fractional optical polarization ($p_{opt}$) smaller and higher than 3\%. In this context, we also report intranight variability study of an additional high-$z$ blazar at $z$=2.347, namely J161942.38+525613.41, monitored over three sessions each with a duration of $\sim$5 hr. Our investigation does not reveal any compelling evidence for a stronger intranight variability of UV emission for high polarization blazars, in contrast to the blazars monitored in the rest-frame blue-optical. We also discuss this trend in light of the proposal that the synchrotron radiation of blazar jets in the UV/X-ray regime may arise from a relativistic particle population different from that radiating up to near-infrared/optical frequencies.
We report the first study to characterise intranight variability of the blazar class from the perspective of (rest-frame) UV emission. For this, we carried out intranight optical monitoring of 14 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) located at high redshifts (1.5 < $z$ < 3.7), in 42 sessions of median duration $\sim$ 5.4 hr. These sources were grouped into two samples distinguished by published fractional optical polarisation: (i) nine low-polarisation sources with $p_{opt} < 3\%$ and (ii) five high-polarisation sources. Unexpectedly, a high duty cycle (DC $\sim$ 30$\%$) is found for intranight…
This study aims to characterise, for the first time, intranight optical variability (INOV) of low-mass active galactic nuclei (LMAGN) which host a black hole (BH) of mass $M_{BH} \sim 10^6 M_{\odot}$, i.e., even less massive than the Galactic centre black hole Sgr A* and 2-3 orders of magnitude below the supermassive black holes (SMBH, $M_{BH}$ $\sim$ $10^8 - 10^9 M_{\odot}$) which are believed to power quasars. Thus, LMAGN are a crucial subclass of AGN filling the wide gap between SMBH and stellar-mass BHs of Galactic X-ray binaries. We have carried out a 36-session campaign of intranight opt…
We report the first results of a systematic investigation to characterize blazar variability power spectral densities (PSDs) at optical frequencies using densely sampled (5--15 minutes integration time), high photometric accuracy ($\lesssim$0.2--0.5\%) R-band intranight light curves, covering timescales ranging from several hours to $\sim$15\,minutes. Our sample consists of 14 optically bright blazars, including nine BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) and five flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) which have shown statistically significant variability during 29 monitoring sessions. We model the intra…
This is continuation of our search for the elusive radio-quiet blazars, by carrying out a systematic programme to detect intranight optical variability (INOV) in a subset of `Weak-Lines-Quasars' (WLQs) which are designated as `high confidence BL Lac candidates' and are known to be radio-quiet. For 10 such RQWLQs, we present here the INOV observations taken in 16 sessions of durations > 3.5 hours each. Combining these data with our previously published INOV monitoring of RQWLQs in 13 sessions, gives a set of INOV observations of 15 RQWLQs monitored in 29 sessions each lasting more than 3.5 hour…
We report the first systematic search for blazars among broad-absorption-line (BAL) quasars. This is based on our intranight optical monitoring of a well-defined sample of 10 candidates selected on the criteria of a flat spectrum and an abnormally high linear polarization at radio wavelengths. A small population of BAL blazars can be expected in the 'polar model' of BAL quasars. However, no such case is found, since none of our 30 monitoring sessions devoted to the 10 candidates yielded a positive detection of intra-night optical variability (INOV), which is uncharacteristic of blazars. This l…
The Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the {\it Fermi} Gamma Ray Space Telescope has detected γ-ray emission from some Narrow Line Seyfert 1(NLSy1) galaxies. This indicates the presence of relativistic jets in these sources similar to blazars and radio galaxies. In an attempt to have an idea of the intranight optical variability (INOV) characteristics of these γ-ray loud NLSy1 galaxies, we have carried out optical flux monitoring observations of three NLSy1 galaxies detected by {\it Fermi}/LAT: 1H 0323+342, PMN J0948+0022 and PKS 1502+036. These optical monitoring observations showed the prese…
The results of 8-year R-band photopolarimetric data of blazar Mrk 421 collected from February 2008 to May 2016 are presented, along with extensive multiwavelength observations covering from radio to TeV $γ$-rays around the flares observed in May 2008, March 2010, and April 2013. The most important results are found in 2013 when the source displayed in the R-band a very high brightness state of $11.29\pm 0.03$ mag ($93.60\pm 1.53$ mJy) on April 10th and a polarization degree of ($11.00\pm0.44$) on May 13th. The analysis of the optical data shows that the polarization variability is due to the s…
We report an extension of our program to search for radio-quiet BL Lac candidates using intra-night optical variability (INOV) as a probe. The present INOV observations cover a well-defined representative set of 10 `radio-quiet weak-emission-line quasars' (RQWLQs), selected from a newly published sample of 46 such sources, derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (Data release 7). Intra-night CCD monitoring of the 10 RQWLQs was carried out in 18 sessions lasting at least 3.5 hours. For each session, differential light curves (DLCs) of the target RQWLQ were derived relative to two steady compa…
Context. 3C 454.3 is a very active flat spectrum radio quasar (blazar) that has undergone a recent outburst in all observed bands, including the optical. Aims. In this work we explore the short-term optical variability of 3C 454.3 during its outburst by searching for time delays between different optical bands. Finding one would be important for understanding the evolution of the spectrum of the relativistic electrons, which generate the synchrotron jet emission. Methods. We performed photometric monitoring of the object by repeating exposures in different optical bands (BVRI). Occasionally, d…
We present the results of variability power spectral density (PSD) analysis using multiwavelength radio to GeV\,$γ$-ray light curves covering decades/years to days/minutes timescales for the blazars 3C 279 and PKS 1510-089. The PSDs are modeled as single power-laws, and the best-fit spectral shape is derived using the `power spectral response' method. With more than ten years of data obtained with weekly/daily sampling intervals, most of the PSDs cover ~2-4 decades in temporal frequency; moreover, in the optical band, the PSDs cover ~6 decades for 3C 279 due to the availability of intranight l…
We present the results of optical (R band) photometric and polarimetric monitoring and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) imaging of the blazar S4 0954+658, along with Fermi and gamma;-ray data during a multi-waveband outburst in 2011 March-April. After a faint state with a brightness level R ~17.6 mag registered in the first half of January 2011, the optical brightness of the source started to rise and reached ~14.8 mag during the middle of March, showing flare-like behavior. The most spectacular case of intranight variability was observed during the night of 2011 March 9, when the blazar bright…
In this work, we present the results of our multi-band microvariability study of the famous blazar BL Lac. We performed microvariablity observations of the source in the optical VRI bands for 4 nights in the year 2016. We studied the intranight flux and spectral variability of the source in detail with an objective to characterize microvariability in the blazars, a frequently observed phenomenon in blazars. The results show that the source often displays a fast flux variability with an amplitude as large as ~ 0.2 magnitude within a few hours, and that the color variability in the similar time …
The object 4C 71.07 is a high-redshift blazar whose spectral energy distribution shows a prominent big blue bump and a strong Compton dominance. We present the results of a two-year multiwavelength campaign led by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) to study both the quasar core and the beamed jet of this source. The WEBT data are complemented by ultraviolet and X-ray data from Swift, and by gamma-ray data by Fermi. The big blue bump is modelled by using optical and near-infrared mean spectra obtained during the campaign, together with optical and ultraviolet quasar templates. We give pres…
This is continuation of our programme to search for the elusive radio-quiet BL Lacs, by carrying out a systematic search for intranight optical variability (INOV) in a subset of `weak-line quasars' which are already designated as `high-confidence BL Lac candidate' and are also known to be radio-quiet. For 6 such radio-quiet weak-line quasars (RQWLQs), we present here new INOV observations taken in 11 sessions of duration >3 hours each. Combining these data with our previously published INOV monitoring of RQWLQs in 19 sessions yields INOV observations for a set of 15 RQWLQs monitored in 30 sess…
We present optical photopolarimetric observations of the BL Lac object S4 0954+658 obtained with the 70-cm telescope in Crimea, 40-cm telescope in St.Petersburg, and 1.8-m Perkins telescope at Lowell Observatory (Flagstaff, Az). After a faint state with a brightness level R ~17.6 mag registered in the first half of January 2011, the optical brightness of the source started to rise and reached ~14.8 mag during the middle of March, showing flare-like behavior. The most spectacular case of intranight variability was observed during the night of 2011 March 9, when the blazar brightened by ~0.7 mag…
We report the first results obtained from our campaign to characterize the intranight-optical variability (INOV) properties of {\it Fermi}~detected blazars, using the observations from the recently commissioned 1.3 m J C Bhattacharya telescope (JCBT). During the first run, we were able to observe 17 blazars in the Bessel $R$ filter for $\sim$137 hrs. Using $C$ and scaled $F$-statistics, we quantify the extent of INOV and derive the duty cycle (DC) which is the fraction of time during which a source exhibits a substantial flux variability. We find a high DC of 40\% for BL Lac objects and the fl…
In an optical monitoring program to characterize the variability properties of blazar, we observed 10 sources from the Roma-BZCAT catalogue for 26 nights in V and R bands during October 2014 to June 2015 with two telescopes located in India. The sample includes mainly newly discovered BL Lacs where the redshift of some sources are not known yet. We present the results of flux and color variations of the sample on intraday and short time scales obtained by using the power-enhanced F-test and the nested-ANOVA tests, along with their spectral behavior. We find significant intraday variability in …

For a new sample of 8 weak-line-quasars (WLQs) we report a sensitive search in 20 intranight monitoring sessions, for blazar-like optical flux variations on hour-like and longer time scale (day/month/year$-$like). The sample consists exclusively of the WLQs that are not radio$-$loud and have either been classified as `radio-weak probable BL Lac candidates' and/or are known to have exhibited at least one episode of large, blazar$-$like optical variability. Whereas only a hint of intra$-$night variability is seen for two of these WLQs, J104833.5$+$620305.0(z = 0.219) and J133219.6$+$622715.9 (z …
We reanalyze Fermi/LAT gamma-ray spectra of bright blazars with a higher photon statistics than in previous works and with new Pass 7 data representation. In the spectra of the brightest blazar 3C 454.3 and possibly of 4C +21.35 we detect breaks at 5 GeV (in the rest frame) associated with the photon-photon pair production absorption by He II Lyman continuum (LyC). We also detect confident breaks at 20 GeV associated with hydrogen LyC both in the individual spectra and in the stacked redshift-corrected spectrum of several bright blazars. The detected breaks in the stacked spectra univocally pr…

本研究通过阿夏戈施密特望远镜两年监测,发现 TeV 高同步峰 BL Lac 天体 H 1426+428 存在快速光学变异性,其他两个天体无显著变异性,证明中小型光学设备可支持高能监测。
BL Lacertae had undergone a series of historical high flux activity over a year, from August 2020 in the optical to VHE $γ$-rays. In this paper, we report on optical flux and spectral variability of the first historical maxima outburst event during October-November in g, r and i bands with the 1.26m telescope at Xinglong observatory, China. We detected significant intranight variations with amplitude rising up to $\sim 30$%, when the fastest variability timescale is found to be a few tens of minutes, giving an emitting region size of the order $10^{-3}$ pc, which corresponds to $\sim 100$ Schw…
The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of some blazars exhibit an ultraviolet (UV) and/or soft X-ray excess, which can be modelled with different radiation mechanisms. Polarization measurements of the UV/X-ray emission from blazars may provide new and unique information about the astrophysical environment of blazar jets, and could thus help to distinguish between different emission scenarios. In this paper, a new Monte-Carlo code -- MAPPIES (Monte-Carlo Applications for Partially Polarized Inverse External-Compton Scattering) -- for polarization-dependent Compton scattering is used to simula…
The optical radiation emitted by blazars contains contributions from synchrotron radiation by relativistic electrons in the jets, as well as thermal radiation emitted mainly by the Accretion Disk (AD), the Broad Line Region (BLR) and the host galaxy. The unpolarized radiation components from the AD, BLR and host galaxy present themselves by decreasing the total polarization in the optical/ultraviolet(UV) spectrum. A combined model for the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) and degree of optical/UV polarization is constructed, enabling the disentanglement of the synchrotron and AD components. O…
Blazar jets are extreme environments, in which relativistic proton interactions with an ultraviolet photon field could give rise to photopion production. High-confidence associations of individual high-energy neutrinos with blazar flares could be achieved via spatially and temporally coincident detections. In 2017, the track-like, extremely high-energy neutrino event IC 170922A was found to coincide with increased $γ$-ray emission from the blazar TXS 0506+056, leading to the identification of the most promising neutrino point source candidate so far. We calculate the expected number of neutrin…
The extragalactic background light (EBL) from the infrared to the ultraviolet is difficult to measure directly, but can be constrained with a variety of methods. EBL photons absorb gamma-rays from distant blazars, allowing one to use blazar spectra from atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (ACTs) to put upper limits on the EBL by assuming a blazar source spectrum. Here we apply a simple technique, similar to the one developed by Schroedter (2005), to the most recent very-high energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations of blazars to put upper limits on the EBL energy density. This technique is independent…
It has been suggested that some radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 contain relativistic jets, on the basis of their flat-spectrum radio nuclei and studies on variability. We present preliminary results of an ongoing investigation of the X-ray and multiwavelength properties of 5 radio-loud NLS1 based on archival data from Swift and XMM-Newton. Some sources present interesting characteristics, very uncharacteristic for a radio-quiet narrow-line Seyfert 1, such as very hard X-ray spectra, and correlated optical and ultraviolet variability. However, none of the studied sources show conclusive eviden…
The distance of the Fermi-detected blazar gamma-ray emission site from the supermassive black hole is a matter of active debate. Here we present a method for testing if the GeV emission of powerful blazars is produced within the sub-pc scale broad line region (BLR) or farther out in the pc-scale molecular torus (MT) environment. If the GeV emission takes place within the BLR, the inverse Compton (IC) scattering of the BLR ultraviolet (UV) seed photons that produces the gamma-rays takes place at the onset of the Klein-Nishina regime. This causes the electron cooling time to become practically e…
The X-ray spectrum of extreme HBL type blazars is located in the synchrotron branch of the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), at energies below the peak. A joint fit of the extrapolated X-ray spectra together with a host galaxy template allows characterizing the synchrotron branch in the SED. The X-ray spectrum is usually characterized either with a pure or a curved power-law model. In the latter case, however, it is hard to distinguish an intrinsic curvature from excess absorption. In this paper, we focus on five well-observed blazars: 1ES 0229+200, PKS 0548-322, RX J1136+6737, 1ES…
Aims. The observation of gamma -ray flares from blazar 0836+710 in 2011, following a period of quiescence, offered an opportunity to study correlated activity at different wavelengths for a high-redshift (z=2.218) active galactic nucleus. Methods. Optical and radio monitoring, plus Fermi-LAT gamma-ray monitoring provided 2008-2012 coverage, while Swift offered auxiliary optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray information. Other contemporaneous observations were used to construct a broad-band spectral energy distribution. Results. There is evidence of correlation but not a measurable lag between the op…
We report the re-emergence of a new broadband emission through a detailed and systematic study of the multi-wavelength spectral and temporal behavior of OJ 287 after its first-ever reported VHE activity in 2017 to date, which includes the second-highest X-ray flux of the source. The source shows high optical to X-ray flux variations, accompanied mainly by strong spectral changes. The optical to X-ray flux variations are correlated and simultaneous except for two durations when they are anti-correlated. The flux variations, however, are anti-correlated with the X-ray spectral state while correl…
The blazar 1ES 0229+200 is a high frequency peaked BL Lac object with a hard TeV spectrum extending to 10 TeV. Its unusual spectral characteristics make it a frequently used probe for intergalactic radiation and magnetic fields. With new, simultaneous observations in the optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-rays, the synchrotron emission is probed in great detail. The X-ray emission varies by a factor of ~2 in 2009, while being rather stable in 2010. The X-ray spectrum is very hard (Γ~ 1.8) and it shows an indication of excess absorption above the Galactic value. The X-ray emission is detected up t…
We present $γ$-ray, X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared light curves of 33 $γ$-ray bright blazars over four years that we have been monitoring since 2008 August with multiple optical, ground-based telescopes and the Swift satellite, and augmented by data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and other publicly available data from Swift. The sample consists of 21 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 12 BL Lac objects (BL Lacs). We identify quiescent and active states of the sources based on their $γ$-ray behavior. We derive $γ$-ray, X-ray, and optical spectral indices, $α_γ$, $…
The X-ray, Ultraviolet, Optical emission from radio-quiet AGNs, black hole binaries, and other compact sources, in general, follow a lognormal flux distribution, a linear rms-flux relation, and a (broken) power-law power spectral densities (PSDs). These characteristics are normally attributed to the multiplicative combination of fluctuations in the accretion disk. Similar features have been inferred for some well-observed blazars in different energy bands, but a systematic study over a long duration is still missing. Using a continuous gamma-ray light curves over 3-days cadence from August 200…
We have studied long-term optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray observations of OJ 287 collected with the UVOT and XRT instruments mounted on board the Swift satellite to quantify spectral and temporal variability patterns observed during different activity states. We characterized the flux variations using the data collected during almost 11 yr of the monitoring of the blazar. Significant variability of the blazar has been detected both in the flux and spectral index from the optical to X-ray regimes. We noted that the variability patterns observed in the optical range are more pronounced than …
Very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays undergo pair production with low energy photons of background radiation fields. This leads to an attenuation of the primary gamma-ray flux of extragalactic sources in the interaction with the extragalactic background light (EBL) which stretches from ultraviolet to far-infrared wavelengths. In the presence of magnetic fields, gamma-rays could oscillate into hypothetical axion-like particles (ALPs). This might lead to a reduced opacity of the Universe for VHE gamma-rays, as ALPs circumvent pair production. Here, the impact of photon-ALP conversions on the spectr…
Emission from blazar jets in the ultraviolet, optical, and infrared is polarized. If these low-energy photons were inverse-Compton scattered, the upscattered high-energy photons retain a fraction of the polarization. Current and future X-ray and gamma-ray polarimeters such as INTEGRAL-SPI, PoGOLITE, X-Calibur, Gamma-Ray Burst Polarimeter, GEMS-like missions, ASTRO-H, and POLARIX have the potential to discover polarized X-rays and gamma-rays from blazar jets for the first time. Detection of such polarization will open a qualitatively new window into high-energy blazar emission; actual measureme…
We observed 5 gamma-ray loud blazars at redshift greater than 2 with the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and the UltraViolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) onboard the Swift satellite, and the Gamma-Ray burst Optical Near-Infrared Detector (GROND) instrument. These observations were quasi simultaneous, usually within a few hours. For 4 of these blazars the near-IR to UV data show the presence of an accretion disc, and we could reliably estimate its accretion rate and black hole mass. One of them, PKS 1348+007, was found in an extraordinarily high IR-optical state, almost two orders of magnitude brighter t…
We present a multi-wavelength spectral and temporal investigation of OJ 287 emission during its strong optical-to-X-ray activity between July 2016 - July 2017. The daily $γ$-ray fluxes from \emph{Fermi}-LAT are consistent with no variability. The strong optical-to-X-ray variability is accompanied by a change in power-law spectral index of the X-ray spectrum from $< 2$ to $>2$, with variations often associated with changes in optical polarization properties. Cross-correlations between optical-to-X-ray emission during four continuous segments show simultaneous optical-ultraviolet (UV) variations…
We report on long-term multi-wavelength monitoring of blazar Mrk~421 from 2010 to 2011. The source exhibited extreme X-ray flares in 2010. Our research group performed optical photopolarimetric follow-up observations using the Kanata telescope. In 2010, the variability in the X-ray band was significant, while the optical and ultraviolet (UV) flux decreased gradually. Polarization properties also exhibited unique variability in 2010, suggesting the presence of systematic component of polarization and magnetic field alignment for the emergence of a new polarized emission region. In contrast, in …
PKS 2155-304 is a blazar located in the Southern Hemisphere, monitored with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) at very high energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) $γ$ rays every year since 2002. Thanks to the large data set collected in the VHE range and simultaneous coverage in optical, ultraviolet (UV), X-ray and high energy $γ$-ray ranges, this object is an excellent laboratory to study spectral and temporal variability in blazars. However, despite many years of dense monitoring, the nature of the variability observed in PKS 2155-304 remains puzzling. In this paper, we discuss the complex spec…
From the early days in gamma-ray astronomy, locating the origin of GeV emission within the core of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) persisted as an open question; the problem is to discern between near- and far-site scenarios with respect to the distance from the super massive central engine. We investigate this question under the light of a complete sample of low synchrotron peak (LSP) blazars which is fully characterized along many decades in the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio up to tens of GeV. We consider the high-energy emission from bright radio blazars and test for synchrotron sel…

The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) can be probed via the absorption imprint it leaves in the spectra of gamma-ray sources ($γγ\rightarrow e^-e^+$). We recently developed a dedicated technique to reconstruct the EBL, and its evolution with redshift, from $γ$ ray optical depth data using a large sample of blazars detected by the $Fermi$ Large Area Telescope. Here, we extend this dataset to the TeV regime using ground-based Cherenkov observations of 38 blazars and report the first homogeneous measurement of the EBL spectral intensity covering the ultraviolet to infrared wavelengths ($\sim$0…
We perform a multi-wavelength polarimetric study of the quasar CTA 102 during an extraordinarily bright $γ$-ray outburst detected by the {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope in September-October 2012 when the source reached a flux of F$_{>100~\mathrm{MeV}} =5.2\pm0.4\times10^{-6}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. At the same time the source displayed an unprecedented optical and NIR outburst. We study the evolution of the parsec scale jet with ultra-high angular resolution through a sequence of 80 total and polarized intensity Very Long Baseline Array images at 43 GHz, covering the observing period fro…
