Connecting the observed rest-ultraviolet (UV) luminosities of high-$z$ galaxies to their intrinsic luminosities (and thus star formation rates) requires correcting for the presence of dust. We bypass a common dust-correction approach that uses empirical relationships between infrared (IR) emission and UV colours, and instead augment a semi-empirical model for galaxy formation with a simple -- but self-consistent -- dust model and use it to jointly fit high-$z$ rest-UV luminosity functions (LFs) and colour-magnitude relations ($M_{\mathrm{UV}}$-$β$). In doing so, we find that UV colours evolve with redshift (at fixed UV magnitude), as suggested by observations, even in cases without underlying evolution in dust production, destruction, absorption, or geometry. The observed evolution in our model arises due to the reduction in the mean stellar age and rise in specific star formation rates with increasing $z$. The UV extinction, $A_{\mathrm{UV}}$, evolves similarly with redshift, though we find a systematically shallower relation between $A_{\mathrm{UV}}$ and $M_{\mathrm{UV}}$ than that predicted by IRX-$β$ relationships derived from $z \sim 3$ galaxy samples. Finally, assuming that high $1600 Å$ transmission ($\gtrsim 0.6$) is a reliable LAE indicator, modest scatter in the effective dust surface density of galaxies can explain the evolution both in $M_{\mathrm{UV}}$-$β$ and LAE fractions. These predictions are readily testable by deep surveys with the James Webb Space Telescope.
A simple estimate of the photometric redshift would prove invaluable to forthcoming continuum surveys on the next generation of large radio telescopes, as well as mitigating the existing bias towards the most optically bright sources. While there is a well known correlation between the near-infrared K-band magnitude and redshift for galaxies, we find the K-z relation to break down for samples dominated by quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). We hypothesise that this is due to the additional contribution to the near-infrared flux by the active galactic nucleus (AGN), and, as such, the K-band magnitude…
We present GALEX far (FUV) and near (NUV) ultraviolet imaging of 34 nearby early-type galaxies from the SAURON representative sample of 48 E/S0 galaxies, all of which have ground-based optical imaging from the MDM Observatory. The surface brightness profiles of nine galaxies show regions with blue UV-optical colours suggesting recent star formation. Five of these show blue integrated UV-optical colours that set them aside in the NUV integrated colour-magnitude relation. They also have other properties confirming they have had recent star formation, in particular H_beta absorption higher than e…
We derive transformation equations between GALEX and UBV colours by using the reliable data of 556 stars. We present two sets of equations; as a function of (only) luminosity class, and as a function of both luminosity class and metallicity. The metallicities are provided from the literature, while the luminosity classes are determined by using the PARSEC mass tracks in this study. Small colour residuals and high squared correlation coefficients promise accurate derived colours. The application of the transformation equations to 70 stars with reliable data shows that the metallicity plays an i…
We derive the evolution of the ultraviolet upturn colour from a sample of field luminous red galaxies at $0.3 < z < 0.7$ with $-24 < M_r < -21.5$. No individual objects are securely detected, so we stack several hundred galaxies within absolute magnitude and redshift intervals. We find that the colour of the ultraviolet upturn (in observed $NUV-i$ which is approximately equivalent to the classical $FUV-V$ at the redshifts of our targets) does not change strongly with redshift to $z=0.7$. This behaviour is similar to that observed in cluster ellipticals over this same mass range and at similar …
We use 3035 Herschel-SPIRE 500$μ$m sources from 20.3 sq deg of sky in the HerMES Lockman, ES1 and XMM-LSS areas to estimate the star-formation rate density at z = 1-6. 500 mu sources are associated first with 350 and 250 mu sources, and then with Spitzer 24 mu sources from the SWIRE photometric redshift catalogue. The infrared and submillimetre data are fitted with a set of radiative-transfer templates corresponding to cirrus (quiescent) and starburst galaxies. Lensing candidates are removed via a set of colour-colour and colour-redshift constraints. Star-formation rates are found to extend fr…
We report the discovery of the likely white dwarf companions to radio millisecond pulsars 47 Tuc Q and 47 Tuc S in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. These blue stars were found in near-ultraviolet images from the Hubble Space Telescope for which we derived accurate absolute astrometry, and are located at positions consistent with the radio coordinates to within 0.016 arcsec (0.2sigma). We present near-ultraviolet and optical colours for the previously identified companion to millisecond pulsar 47 Tuc U, and we unambiguously confirm the tentative prior identifications of the optical counterparts…
New challenges in the modelling of galaxy spectra are bound to emerge as upcoming telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope will allow us to detect galaxies at fainter flux levels and higher redshifts than ever before. Here, we highlight three modelling problems that may become relevant for upcoming observations in the rest-frame ultraviolet/optical at the high-redshift frontier: stellar initial mass function sampling effects, Population III signatures and the leakage of ionizing radiation into the intergalactic medium.
The properties of isolated galaxies are mainly driven by intrinsic evolution and not by the external influence of their environments. Therefore the isolated galaxy sample may be considered as a reference sample to study different environmental effects. We made detailed comparisons between the near-infrared (2MASS) and optical (SDSS) colours of the 2MASS XSC selected sample of isolated 2MIG galaxies and with other objects from the wide range of denser environments (field, groups/clusters, triplets and pairs). We found that early type galaxies show similar (J-H)rest and (g-r)rest colours practic…
GALEX, the first all sky imaging UV satellite, has imaged a large part of the sky providing an excellent opportunity for studying UV star counts. The aim of our study is to investigate in detail the observed UV star counts obtained by GALEX vis-a-vis the model simulated catalogs produced by the Besancon model of stellar population synthesis in various Galactic directions, and to explore the potential for studying the structure of our Galaxy from images in multiple NUV and FUV filters of the forthcoming Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) to be flown onboard ASTROSAT. We have upgraded the Besa…
Our aim is to determine the distribution of stellar population parameters (extinction, age, metallicity, and star formation rate) of quiescent galaxies within the rest-frame stellar mass$-$colour and $UVJ$ colour$-$colour diagrams corrected for extinction up to $z\sim1$. These novel diagrams reduce the contamination in samples of quiescent galaxies owing to dust-reddened galaxies, and they provide useful constraints on stellar population parameters. We set constraints on the stellar population parameters of quiescent galaxies combining the ALHAMBRA multi-filter photo-spectra with our SED-fitti…
We examine the ultraviolet and optical colours of 906 cluster galaxies from the KASI-Yonsei Deep Imaging Survey of Clusters (KYDISC). Galaxies have been divided into two categories, morphologically-disturbed and undisturbed galaxies, based on the visual signatures related to recent mergers. We find that galaxies with signatures of recent mergers show significantly bluer colours than undisturbed galaxies. Disturbed galaxies populate more on the cluster outskirts, suggesting recent accretion into the cluster environment, which implies that disturbed galaxies can be less influenced by the environ…
We constrain the spatial gradient of star formation history within galaxies using the colour gradients in NUV-u and u-i for a local spatially-resolved galaxy sample. By splitting each galaxy into an inner and an outer part, we find that most galaxies show negative gradients in these two colours. We first rule out dust extinction gradient and metallicity gradient as the dominant source for the colour gradient. Then using stellar population models, we explore variations in star formation history to explain the colour gradients. As shown by our earlier work, a two-phase SFH consisting of an early…
The kinematic disturbances associated with major galaxy mergers are known to produce gas inflows, which in turn may trigger accretion onto the supermassive black holes (SMBH) of the participant galaxies. While this effect has been studied in galaxy pairs, the frequency of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in fully coalesced post-merger systems is poorly constrained due to the limited size or impurity of extant post-merger samples. Previously, we combined convolutional neural network (CNN) predictions with visual classifications to identify a highly pure sample of 699 post-mergers in deep r-band ima…
We present simple stellar population models based on the empirical X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL) from NUV to NIR wavelengths. The unmatched characteristics of relatively high resolution and extended wavelength coverage ($350-2480$ nm, $R\sim10\,000$) of the XSL population models bring us closer to bridging optical and NIR studies of intermediate and old stellar populations. It is now common to find good agreement between observed and predicted NUV and optical properties of stellar clusters due to our good understanding of the main-sequence and early giant phases of stars. However, NIR spect…
Compact groups of galaxies provide insight into the role of low-mass, dense environments in galaxy evolution because the low velocity dispersions and close proximity of galaxy members result in frequent interactions that take place over extended timescales. We expand the census of star formation in compact group galaxies by \citet{tzanavaris10} and collaborators with Swift UVOT, Spitzer IRAC and MIPS 24 \micron\ photometry of a sample of 183 galaxies in 46 compact groups. After correcting luminosities for the contribution from old stellar populations, we estimate the dust-unobscured star forma…
Our goal is to characterise the dependence of the optical mass-to-light ratio on galaxy colour up to z = 1.5, expanding the redshift range explored in previous work. From the ALHAMBRA redshifts, stellar masses, and rest-frame luminosities provided by the MUFFIT code, we derive the mass-to-light ratio vs. colour relation (MLCR) both for quiescent and star-forming galaxies. The intrinsic relation and its physical dispersion are derived with a Bayesian inference model. The rest-frame i-band mass-to-light ratio of quiescent and star-forming galaxies presents a tight correlation with the rest-frame…
Galaxy spectral energy distributions (SEDs) remain among the most challenging yet informative quantities to reproduce in simulations due to the large and complex mixture of physical processes that shape the radiation output of a galaxy. With the increasing number of surveys utilising broadband colours as part of their target selection criteria, the production of realistic SEDs in simulations is necessary for assisting in survey design and interpretation of observations. The recent success in reproducing the observed luminosity functions (LF) from far-UV to far-IR, using the state-of-the-art se…
Looking for bright galaxies born in the early universe is fundamental to investigating the Epoch of Reionization, the era when the first stars and galaxies ionized the intergalactic medium. We utilize Hubble Space Telescope pure parallel imaging to select galaxy candidates at a time 500 to 650 million years after the Big Bang, which corresponds to redshifts z ~ 8-10. These data come from the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies Survey (BoRG) Cycle 22 dataset, which consists of pure-parallel imaging in ~ 90 different lines of sight that sum up to an area of ~ 420 arcmin^2. This survey uses five fil…
We present the first detection of diffuse dust in the intra-cluster medium of the Virgo cluster out to $\sim$0.4 virial radii, and study the radial variation of its properties on a radial scale of the virial radius. Analysing near-UV - $i$ colours for a sample of $\sim12000$ background galaxies with redshifts $0.02 < z < 0.8$, we find significant colour reddening and relate it to variation in $E(B-V)$ values. The $E(B-V)$ mean profile shows a dust component characterised by an average reddening $E(B-V)\sim0.042 \pm 0.004$ mag within 1.5 degrees ($\sim0.3\, r_{vir}$) from the cluster centre. As…
Evolutionary studies that compare galaxy structure as a function of redshift are complicated by the fact that any particular galaxy's appearance depends in part on the rest-frame wavelength of the observation. This leads to the necessity for a "morphological k-correction" between different pass-bands, especially when comparing the rest-frame optical or infrared (IR) to the ultraviolet (UV). This is of particular concern for high redshift studies that are conducted in the rest-frame UV. We investigate the effects of this "band-pass shifting" out of the UV by quantifying nearby galaxy structure …
CONTEXT: The Virgo direction has been observed at many wavelengths in the recent years, in particular in the ultraviolet with GALEX. The far ultraviolet (FUV) diffuse light detected by GALEX bears interesting information on the large scale distribution of Galactic dust, owing to the GALEX FUV band sensitivity and resolution. AIMS: We aim to characterise the ultraviolet large scale distribution of diffuse emission in the Virgo direction. A map of this emission may become useful for various studies by identifying regions where dust affects observations by either scattering light or absorbing rad…
For the extremely bright lensed galaxy SDSS J1723+3411 at z=1.3293 , we analyze spatially integrated MMT, Keck, and Hubble Space Telescope spectra that fully cover the rest-frame wavelength range of 1400 to 7200 Angstroms. We also analyze near-IR spectra from Gemini that cover H alpha for a portion of the lensed arc. We report fluxes for 42 detected emission lines, and upper limits for an additional 22. This galaxy has extreme emission line ratios and high equivalent widths that are characteristic of extreme emission-line galaxies. We compute strong emission line diagnostics from both the rest…
We present the rest-frame UV wavelength dependence of the Petrosian-like half-light radius ($r_{50}$), and the concentration parameter for a sample of 198 star-forming galaxies at 0.5 < z < 1.5. We find a ~5% decrease in $r_{50}$ from 1500 Å to 3000 Å, with half-light radii at 3000 Å ranging from 0.6 kpc to 6 kpc. We also find a decrease in concentration of ~0.07 (1.9 < $C_{3000}$ < 3.9). The lack of a strong relationship between $r_{50}$ and wavelength is consistent with a model in which clumpy star formation is distributed over length scales comparable to the galaxy's rest-frame optical ligh…
We explore the evolution of the statistical distribution of galaxy morphological properties and colours over the redshift range $0.5<z<1$, combining high-quality imaging data from the CFHT Legacy Survey with the large number of redshifts and extended photometry from the VIPERS survey. Galaxy structural parameters are measured by fitting Sérsic profiles to $i$-band images and then combined with absolute magnitudes, colours and redshifts, to trace the evolution in a multi-parameter space. We analyse, using a new method, the combination of colours and structural parameters of early- and late-type…
We present F775W-F850LP (rest-frame UV-U) and F850LP-F160W (rest-frame U-R) colour gradients for a sample of 17 elliptical galaxies morphologically selected in the cluster XMMU J2235.3-2557 at $z$=1.39. We detected significant negative (redder inwards) U-R colour gradients in $\sim$70 per cent of the galaxies and flat gradients for the remaining ones. On the other hand, the UV-U gradients are significant positive (bluer inwards) for $\sim$80 per cent of the galaxies and flat for the remaining ones. Using stellar population synthesis models, we found that the behaviour of the two colour gradien…
The fraction of ionizing photons that escape high-redshift galaxies sensitively determines whether galaxies reionized the early universe. However, this escape fraction cannot be measured from high-redshift galaxies because the opacity of the intergalactic medium is large at high redshifts. Without methods to indirectly measure the escape fraction of high-redshift galaxies, it is unlikely that we will know what reionized the universe. Here, we analyze the far-ultraviolet (UV) H I (Lyman series) and low-ionization metal absorption lines of nine low-redshift, confirmed Lyman continuum emitting ga…
We have observed a sample of 14 nearby ($z \sim 0.03$) star-forming blue compact galaxies in the rest-frame far-UV ($\sim1150-2200 Å$) using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. We have also generated a grid of stellar population synthesis models using the Starburst99 evolutionary synthesis code, allowing us to compare observations and theoretical predictions for the SiIV_1400 and CIV_1550 UV indices; both are comprised of a blend of stellar wind and interstellar lines and have been proposed as metallicity diagnostics in the UV. Our models and observations both demons…
We present deep ALMA dust continuum observations for a sample of luminous ($M_{\rm UV} < -22$) star-forming galaxies at $z \simeq 7$. We detect five of the six sources in the far-infrared (FIR), providing key constraints on the obscured star-formation rate (SFR) and the infrared-excess-$β$ (IRX-$β$) relation without the need for stacking. Despite the galaxies showing blue rest-frame UV slopes ($β\simeq -2$) we find that 35-75 percent of the total SFR is obscured. We find the IRX-$β$ relation derived for these $z \simeq 7$ sources is consistent with that found for local star-burst galaxies. Usi…
We present a rest-frame ultraviolet analysis of ~120 z~3.1 Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDF-S). Using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images taken as part of the Galaxy Evolution From Morphology and SEDS (GEMS) survey, Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), and Hubble Ultradeep Field (HUDF) surveys, we analyze the sizes of LAEs, as well as the spatial distribution of their components, which are defined as distinct clumps of UV-continuum emission. We set an upper limit of ~1 kpc (~0.1") on the rms offset between the centroids of the continuum and…
We study the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) variability (rest frame wavelengths 500 - 920 $Å$) of high luminosity quasars using HST (low to intermediate redshift sample) and SDSS (high redshift sample) archives. The combined HST and SDSS data indicates a much more pronounced variability when the sampling time between observations in the quasar rest frame is $> 2\times 10^{7}$ sec compared to $< 1.5\times 10^{7}$ sec. Based on an excess variance analysis, for time intervals $< 2\times 10^{7}$ sec in the quasar rest frame, $10\%$ of the quasars (4/40) show evidence of EUV variability. Similarly, for …
