Nuclear level density at low excitation energies is proposed as an indicator of the first order phase transitions in nuclei. The new signature, a maximum value of the level density at the critical point, appears to be sensitive to the detailed way the phase transition takes place in different nuclear regions: it is consistent with phase coexistence in the N=90 region, and with a rapid crossing of the two phases, without their coexistence/mixing at the critical point in the N=60 region, respectively. Candidates for critical point nuclei are proposed for odd-mass and odd-odd nuclei, using correlations between relative excitation energies, and their ratios, for structures (bands) based on unique-parity orbitals.
I summarize recent results and discuss upcoming and planned experiments that attempt to elucidate how the structure of nucleons might be modified by nuclear binding.
Ground state quadrupole moments of odd-odd near double magic nuclei are calculated in the approximation of no interaction between odd particles. Under such a simple approximation, the problem is reduced to the calculations of quadrupole moments of corresponding odd-even nuclei. These calculations are performed within the self-consistent Theory of Finite Fermi Systems based on the Energy Density Functional by Fayans et al. with the known DF3-a parameters. A reasonable agreement with the available experimental data has been obtained for odd-odd nuclei and odd near-magic nuclei investigated. The …
Neutron-rich nuclei become increasingly sensitive to three-nucleon forces. These components of nuclear forces are at the forefront of theoretical developments based on effective field theories of quantum chromodynamics. We discuss our understanding of three-nucleon forces and their impact on exotic nuclei, and show how new measurements test and constrain them. Three-nucleon forces therefore provide an exciting link between theoretical and experimental nuclear physics frontiers.
Magnetic moments of more than one hundred odd-odd spherical nuclei in ground and excited states are calculated within the self-consistent TFFS based on the EDF method by Fayans {\it et al}. We limit ourselves to nuclei with a neutron and a proton particle (hole) added to the magic or semimagic core. A simple model of no interaction between the odd nucleons is used. In most the cases we analyzed, a good agreement with the experimental data is obtained. Several cases are considered where this simple model does not work and it is necessary to go beyond. The unknown values of magnetic moments of m…
In this work we calculate the energies odd J$^{+}$ states in selectedeven-even nuclei-$^{44}$ Ti $^{52}$ Fe and $^{96}$Cd. Of particularinterest is the fact that in many cases the first T=0 and the first T=1 state are close in energy. Whether the lowest odd J state hasT=0 or T=1 is here considered.
The present contribution reviews recent advances made toward a microscopic understanding of superfluidity in nuclei using many-body methods based on the BCS ansatz and low-momentum inter-nucleon interactions, themselves based on chiral effective field theory and renormalization group techniques.
Recent studies at Jefferson Lab show that there are a certain proportion of nucleons in nuclei have momenta greater than the so-called nuclear Fermi momentum $p_{F}$. Based on the transport model of nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies, nucleon high momentum caused by the neutron-proton short-range correlations in nuclei is constrained by comparing with $π$ and photon experimental data and considering some uncertainties. The high momentum cutoff value $p_{max}$ $\leq$ 2$p_{F}$ is obtained.
The study of spherical-deformed ground--state phase transitions in finite nuclei as a function of N and Z is hindered by the discrete values of the nucleon number. A resolution of the integer nucleon number problem, and evidence relating to phase transitions in finite nuclei, are discussed from the experimental point of view and interpreted within the framework of the interacting boson model.
The binding energies of even-even and odd-odd N=Z nuclei are compared. After correcting for the symmetry energy we find that the lowest T=1 state in odd-odd N=Z nuclei is as bound as the ground state in the neighboring even-even nucleus, thus providing evidence for isovector np pairing. However, T=0 states in odd-odd N=Z nuclei are several MeV less bound than the even-even ground states. We associate this difference with a pair gap and conclude that there is no evidence for an isoscalar pairing condensate in N=Z nuclei.
While the main features of atomic nuclei are well described by nuclear mean-field models, there is a large and growing body of evidence which indicates an important additional role played by spatially-correlated nucleon-nucleon structures. The role of nucleonic structures was first suggested by Heidmann in 1950 to explain pick-up reactions of energetic nucleons. Since then a steady flux of new experimental evidence has confirmed the presence of similar structures inside atomic nuclei, dominated by correlations between pairs of nucleons. The role of these internal nucleon-nucleon correlations h…
We propose a phenomenological approach to examine the role of short- and long-range nucleon-nucleon correlations in the quenching of single-particle strength in atomic nuclei and their evolution in asymmetric nuclei and neutron matter. These correlations are thought to be the reason for the quenching of spectroscopic factors observed in $\rm (e,e'p)$, $\rm (p,2p)$ and transfer reactions. We show that the recently observed increase of the high-momentum component of the protons in neutron-rich nuclei is consistent with the reduced proton spectroscopic factors. Our approach connects recent result…
We develop a novel theoretical method for calculating spectroscopic properties of those nuclei with odd number of nucleons, that is based on the nuclear density functional theory and the particle-boson coupling scheme. Self-consistent mean-field calculation based on the DFT is performed to provide microscopic inputs to build the Hamiltonian of the interacting boson-fermion systems, which gives excitation spectra and transition rates of odd-mass nuclei. The method is successfully applied to identify the quantum shape phase transitions and the role of octupole correlations in odd-mass nuclei, an…
The number of nucleon (NN) scaling of the directed flow $v_1$ and elliptic flow ($v_{2}$) as well as the nuclear modification factor ($R_{cp}$) are tested for light nuclei which are produced in 0.4$A$ GeV $^{197}Au + ^{197}Au$ collisions at different impact parameters with two different in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections in the framework of an isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model. In that energy domain, the emission of light nuclei can be well described by the squeeze-out phenonomenon. The results show a nice NN scaling behavior for flow parameters $v_{1}$, $v_{2}$ a…
In the past decades, it has been shown that the three-body force is necessary for a fully microscopic understanding of nuclear many-body systems, and thus efficient schemes for storing and utilizing three-body matrix elements have been developed. However, three-body matrix elements still demand a lot of memory and/or storage and it readily exceeds the limitation of the state-of-the-art supercomputers. We explore the possibility of mimicking the effects of three-body forces in medium-mass region, especially lower $pf$ shell, by density-dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interactions combining …
We present a method to calculate spectroscopic properties of odd-odd nuclei within the framework of the Interacting Boson-Fermion-Fermion Model based on the Gogny energy density functional. The $(β,γ)$-deformation energy surface of the even-even (boson-)core nucleus, spherical single-particle energies and occupation probabilities of the odd neutron and odd proton, are provided by the constrained self-consistent mean-field calculation within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method with the Gogny-D1M functional. These quantities are used as a microscopic input to fix most of the parameters of the IBF…
For more than half a century, nucleons are considered to move continuously in the nuclei. Recent electron-scattering experiments indicate about 20$\sim$25\% nucleons in heavier nuclei are involved in the neutron-proton short-range correlations. Nucleons in the nuclei thus have abnormal behavior unlike those in the non-interaction fermi gas. In the neutron-rich nuclei, around the Fermi momentum, the neutron-proton short-range correlations lead to a momentum gap in the proton momentum distribution, which is circumstantially supported by the pionic experimental data. Likewise, there should also b…
Nucleon-nucleon momentum correlation function have been presented for nuclear reactions with neutron-rich or proton-rich projectiles using a nuclear transport theory, namely Isospin-Dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics model. The relationship between the binding energy of projectiles and the strength of proton-neutron correlation function at small relative momentum has been explored, while proton-proton correlation function shows its sensitivity to the proton density distribution. Those results show that nucleon-nucleon correlation function is useful to reflect some features of the neutron- or…
We show that the lowest-energy solution of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equation has the even particle-number parity as long as the time-reversal symmetry is conserved in the HFB Hamiltonian without null eigenvalues. Based on this finding, we give a rigorous foundation of a method for solving the HFB equation to describe the ground state of odd-mass nuclei by employing a time-reversal anti-symmetric constraint operator to the Hamiltonian, where one obtains directly the ground state as a self-consistent solution of the cranked-HFB-type equation. Numerical analysis is done for the neutron-r…
The Gamow-Teller strength in nuclei can be strongly affected by the internal degrees of freedom of the nucleon. It is demonstrated that this feature is unique to the Gamow-Teller. Excitation modes that involve spatial degrees of freedom are much less influenced by the internal excitation of nucleons. The fact that the observed Gamow-Teller strength is quenched by 30-40 percent in all nuclei suggests that indeed this is due to the nucleon excitation in nuclei.
We present a theoretical study of the Maris polarization effect and its application in quasi-free reactions to assess information on the structure of exotic nuclei. We discuss the uncertainties in the calculations of triple differential cross sections and of analyzing powers due the choices of various nucleon-nucleon interactions the optical potentials and limitations of the method. Our calculations explore a large number of choices for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions and the optical potential for nucleon-nucleus scattering. Our study implies that polarization variables in (p,2p) reactio…
The predictions on the mode of decay of the odd-even and odd-odd isotopes of heavy and superheavy nuclei with Z = 99-129, in the range 228 \leg A \leg 336, have been done within the Coulomb and proximity potential model for deformed nuclei (CPPMDN). A comparison of our calculated alpha half lives with the values computed using other theoretical models shows good agreement with each other. An extensive study on the spontaneous fission half lives of all the isotopes under study has been performed to identify the long-lived isotopes in the mass region. The study reveals that the alpha decay half …
Spectroscopic Amplitudes (SA) in the Interacting Boson Fermion Fermion Model (IBFFM) are necessary for the computation of $0νββ$ decays but also for cross sections of heavy-ion reactions, in particular, Double Charge Exchange reactions for the NUMEN collaboration, if one does not want to use the closure limit. We present for the first time: i) the formalism and operators to compute in a general case the spectroscopic amplitudes in the scheme IBFFM from an even-even to odd-odd nuclei, in a way suited to be used in reaction code, i.e., extracting the contribution of each orbital; 2) the odd-odd …
We summarise recent progress in theory and experiment towards understanding etaprime meson interactions with nucleons and nuclei. Highlights include the production mechanism of etaprime mesons in proton-proton collisions close to threshold, the etaprime effective mass shift in nuclei and the determination of the etaprime-nucleon scattering length in free space.
Conflicting coupling of unpaired nucleons in the odd-odd nuclei is discussed. A very simple explanation is suggested for the damping of the energy spacing of the lowest levels in the rotational bands in the odd-odd nuclei in the case of a "conflicting" coupling of the odd proton and neutron comparative to those of the bands based on the state of the strongly-coupled particle in the neighbouring odd nuclei entering the "conflicting" configuration.
Present and prospective fundamental symmetry tests with nucleons, nuclei and atoms are probing for possible new physics at the TeV scale and beyond. These ongoing and proposed table-top as well as accelerator-based experiments are thus a vital component of the Intensity Frontier. At the same time, these tests provide increasingly sophisticated probes of long-distance strong interactions that are responsible for the structure of nucleons and nuclei. In this community report, some of the most compelling opportunities with nucleons, nuclei and atoms are summarized, drawing largely on input receiv…
We compute the binding energies, radii, and densities for selected medium-mass nuclei within coupled-cluster theory and employ the "bare" chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction at order N3LO. We find rather well-converged results in model spaces consisting of 15 oscillator shells, and the doubly magic nuclei 40Ca, 48Ca, and the exotic 48Ni are underbound by about 1 MeV per nucleon within the CCSD approximation. The binding-energy difference between the mirror nuclei 48Ca and 48Ni is close to theoretical mass table evaluations. Our computation of the one-body density matrices and the corresponding …
We perform ab initio calculations for nuclei around ^{16}O, ^{40}Ca, and ^{56}Ni using realistic nucleon-nucleon forces. In particular, ^{56}Ni is computed as the heaviest nucleus in this kind of ab initio calculation. Ground-state and single-particle energies including three-body-cluster effects are obtained within the framework of the unitary-model-operator approach. It is shown that the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential gives quite good results close to the experimental values for all nuclei in the present work.
We consider T=0 states in even-even and odd-odd N=Z nuclei. The g factors that emerge are isoscalar. We find that the single j shell model gives simple expressions for these g factors which for even-even nuclei are suprisingly close to the collective values for K=0 bands. The g factors of many 2+ in even-even nuclei and 1+ and 3+ states in odd-odd nuclei have g factors close to 0.5.
Starting with a quark model of nucleon structure in which the valence quarks are strongly correlated within a nucleon, the light nuclei are constructed by assuming similar correlations of the quarks of neighboring nucleons. Applying the model to larger collections of nucleons reveals the emergence of the face-centered cubic (FCC) symmetry at the nuclear level. Nuclei with closed shells possess octahedral symmetry. Binding of nucleons are provided by quark loops formed by three and four nucleon correlations. Quark loops are responsible for formation of exotic (borromean) nuclei, as well. The mo…
The importance of the effects of nucleon-nucleon (NN) short-range correlations (SRC) and Gribov inelastic shadowing (IS) on various high energy scattering processes involving nuclear targets is demonstrated within an improved Glauber-Gribov approach.
Using an isospin-dependent transport model, we study the effects of nuclear symmetry energy on two-nucleon correlation functions in heavy ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei. We find that the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy affects significantly the nucleon emission times in these collisions, leading to larger values of two-nucleon correlation functions for a symmetry energy that has a stronger density dependence. Two-nucleon correlation functions are thus useful tools for extracting information about the nuclear symmetry energy from heavy ion collisions.
We present the first study of pairing in nuclei including three-nucleon forces. We perform systematic calculations of the odd-even mass staggering generated using a microscopic pairing interaction at first order in chiral low-momentum interactions. Significant repulsive contributions from the leading chiral three-nucleon forces are found. Two- and three-nucleon interactions combined account for approximately 70% of the experimental pairing gaps, which leaves room for self-energy and induced interaction effects that are expected to be overall attractive in nuclei.
Manifestations of P-,T-odd weak interaction between nucleons in nucleus are considered. Renormalization of this interaction due to residual strong interaction is studied. Mean squared matrix elements of P-,T-odd weak interaction between compound states are calculated. Correlators between P-,T-odd and P-odd, T-even weak interaction matrix elements between compound states are considered and estimates for these quantities are obtained.
Some binding-energy-related quantities serving as effective order parameters have been used to analyze the shape phase transition in the odd Sm nuclei. It is found that the signals of phase transition in the odd Sm nuclei are greatly enhanced in contrast to the even Sm nuclei. A further analysis shows that the transitional behaviors related to pairing in the Sm nuclei can be well described by the mean field plus pairing interaction model, with a monotonic decrease in the pairing strength $G$.
We investigate neutrino-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies incorporating quasielastic scattering and Delta(1232) excitation as elementary processes, together with Fermi motion, Pauli blocking and mean-field potentials in the nuclear medium. A full coupled-channel treatment of final state interactions is achieved with a semiclassical BUU transport model. Results for inclusive reactions and nucleon knockout are presented.
After identifying the nuclei in the regions near A =80 and A = 160 for which beta-decay rates have the greatest effect on weak and main r-process abundance patterns, we apply the finite-amplitude method (FAM) with Skyrme energy-density functionals (EDFs) to calculate beta-decay half-lives of those nuclei in the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA). We use the equal filling approximation to extend our implementation of the charge-changing FAM, which incorporates pairing correlations and allows axially symmetric deformation, to odd-A and odd-odd nuclei. Within this framework we find d…
We review the production of high-mass lepton pairs in fixed-target experiments, including both Drell-Yan (DY) and heavy quarkonium (J/Psi and Upsilons) production.
Talk given at the "International Workshop on (e,e'p) Processes", July 2-6, 2017, Bled, Slovenia. Various many-body calculations are compared and the results provided by the Normalization Conserving Linked Cluster Expansion with realistic NN interactions are reviewed and analyzed in detail, as far as ground state energies, momentum distributions and spectral functions of few-nucleon system and complex nuclei are concerned.
This report summarizes our understanding of antikaon-nucleon interactions and reviews the present theoretical situation in the quest for quasibound antikaon-nuclear systems.
We report variational Monte Carlo calculations of single-nucleon momentum distributions for A <= 12 nuclei and nucleon-pair and nucleon-cluster momentum distributions for A <= 8. The wave functions have been generated for a Hamiltonian containing the Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Urbana X three-nucleon potentials. The single-nucleon and nucleon-pair momentum distributions exhibit universal features attributable to the one-pion-exchange tensor interaction. The single-nucleon distributions are broken down into proton and neutron components and spin-up and spin-down components where appropriate. Th…
Relationships between mass intervals for free hadrons and in nuclei are studied in two theoretical approaches inspired by QCD: naive quark model and skyrmion model, taking one example each from mesons and baryons, that of pi-rho splitting in mesons, and nucleon-Delta splitting in baryons. Possible deconfinement effects in nuclei are examined.
The ground-state energy of the doubly magic nuclei 4He and 16O has been calculated within the framework of the Goldstone expansion starting from modern nucleon-nucleon potentials. A low-momentum potential V-low-k has been derived from the bare potential by integrating out its high-momentum components beyond a cutoff Lambda. We have employed a simple criterion to relate this cutoff momentum to a boundary condition for the two-nucleon model space spanned by a harmonic-oscillator basis. Convergence of the results has been obtained with a limited number of oscillator quanta.
We tested several choices of the in-medium value of the Bjorken scaling variable assuming the nucleon structure function in nucleus to be the same as that of free nucleon. The results unambiguously show that it is different.
Inclusive quasi-elastic electron scattering off nuclei is investigated at high momentum transfer (Q^2>1 (GeV/c)^2) and x>1 adopting a consistent treatment of nucleon-nucleon correlations in initial and final states. It is shown that in case of light as well as complex nuclei the inclusive cross section at 1.3<x<2 is dominated by the absorption of the virtual photon on a pair of correlated nucleons and by their elastic rescattering in the continuum, whereas at x>2 it is governed by the rescattering of the outgoing off-mass-shell nucleon in the complex optical potential generated by the ground s…
We have studied the low lying magnetic spectra of 12C, 16O, 40Ca, 48Ca and 208Pb nuclei within the Random Phase Approximation (RPA) theory, finding that the description of low-lying magnetic states of doubly-closed-shell nuclei imposes severe constraints on the spin and tensor terms of the nucleon-nucleon effective interaction. We have first made an investigation by using four phenomenological effective interactions and we have obtained good agreement with the experimental magnetic spectra, and, to a lesser extent, with the electron scattering responses. Then we have made self-consistent RPA c…
We investigate the parity-violating nucleon-nucleon potential as obtained in chiral effective field theory. By using resonance saturation we compare the chiral potential to the more traditional one-meson exchange potential. In particular, we show how parameters appearing in the different approaches can be compared with each other and demonstrate that analyses of parity violation in proton-proton scattering within the different approaches are in good agreement. In the second part of this work, we extend the parity-violating potential to next-to-next-to-leading order. We show that generally it i…
The 1S0 pairing gap in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter and finite nuclei is investigated using the chiral nucleon-nucleon potential at the N3LO order in the two-body sector, and the N2LO order in the three-body sector. To include realistic nuclear forces in RHB (Relativistic Hartree Bolgoliubov) calculations we rely on a separable form of the pairing interaction adjusted to the bare nuclear force. The separable pairing force is applied to the analysis of pairing properties for several isotopic and isotonic chains of spherical nuclei.
We solve the ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) in the complete Nmax = 8 basis for A = 7 and A = 8 nuclei with two-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions derived within chiral effective field theory (EFT). We find that including the chiral EFT three-nucleon interaction in the Hamiltonian improves overall good agreement with experimental binding energies, excitation spectra, transitions and electromagnetic moments. We predict states that exhibit sensitivity to including the chiral EFT three-nucleon interaction but are not yet known experimentally.
We present a systematic analysis of the description of odd nuclei by the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach augmented with pairing in BCS approximation and blocking of the odd nucleon. Current and spin densities in the Skyrme functional produce time-odd mean fields (TOMF) for odd nuclei. Their effect on basic properties (binding energies, odd-even staggering, separation energies and spectra) is investigated for the three Skyrme parameterizations SkI3, SLy6, and SV-bas. About 1300 spherical and axially-deformed odd nuclei with 16 < Z < 92 are considered. The calculations demonstrate that the TOMF eff…
The Dirac structure of the nucleon self-energy in asymmetric nuclear matter cannot reliably be deduced from the momentum dependence of the single-particle energies. It is demonstrated that such attempts yield an isospin dependence with even a wrong sign. Relativistic studies of finite nuclei have been based on such studies of asymmetric nuclear matter. The effects of these isospin components on the results for finite nuclei are investigated.
A systematic study of 2-quasiparticle bands of the proton-rich odd-odd nuclei in the mass A ~ 70-80 region is performed using the projected shell model approach. The study includes Br-, Rb-, and Y-isotopes with N = Z+2, and Z+4. We describe the energy spectra and electromagnetic transition strengths in terms of the configuration mixing of the angular-momentum projected multi-quasiparticle states. Signature splitting and signature inversion in the rotational bands are discussed and are shown to be well described. A preliminary study of the odd-odd N = Z nucleus, 74Rb using the concept of sponta…
We study the influence of the nucleon spectral function on eta photo- and electroproduction on nuclei. Besides kinematical effects due to groundstate correlations, also a modification of the S11(1535) decay width is taken into account, which is caused by the possible decay into nucleons with mass smaller than the pole mass in the medium. Hence, resonances with masses below the free N eta threshold can contribute to eta production.
Simple methods in the frame work of the broken pair model have been worked out for odd-odd nuclei. The reliability of the model has been tested by reproducing the shell model results of limiting cases in which the broken pair model exactly coincides with the shell model. The model is then applied to calculate the energy levels of some nuclei in the Zirconium region. The model results compare reasonably well with the shell model as well as with the experimental data.
We present a model for the description of nuclear matter and finite nuclei, and at the same time, for the study of medium modifications of nucleon properties. The nucleons are described as nontopological solitons which interact through the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons. The model explicitly incorporates quark degrees of freedom into nuclear many-body systems and provides satisfactory results on the nuclear properties. The present model predicts a significant increase of the nucleon radius at normal nuclear matter density. It is very interesting to see the nucleon propert…
This presentation reports on recent developments concerning basic aspects of low-energy QCD as they relate to the understanding of the nucleon mass and the nuclear many-body problem.
We calculate the total and differential quasielastic cross sections for neutrino and antineutrino scattering on nucleons using up to date fits to the nucleon elastic electromagnetic form factors $G_E^p$, $G_E^n$, $G_M^p$, $G_M^n$, and $F_A$ and pseudoscalar form factors. We compare predictions of the cross sections for nucelons and nuclei to experimental data.
We consider the spin-isospin-independent central part of the residual nucleon-nucleon potential in finite spherical nuclei taking into account the deformation effects of the nucleons within the surrounding nuclear environment. It is shown that inside the nucleus the short-range repulsive contribution of the potential is increased and the intermediate attraction is decreased. We identify the growth of the radial component of the spin-isospin independent short-range part of the in-medium nucleon-nucleon interaction as the responsible agent that prevents the radial collapse of the nucleus.
