This paper introduces a new two-dimensional modulation technique called Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation. OTFS has the novel and important feature of being designed in the delay-Doppler domain. When coupled with a suitable equalizer, OTFS modulation is able to exploit the full channel diversity over both time and frequency. Moreover, it converts the fading, time-varying wireless channel experienced by modulated signals such as OFDM into a time-independent channel with a complex channel gain that is essentially constant for all symbols.
This design obviates the need for transmitter adaptation, and greatly simplifies system operation. The paper describes the basic operating principles of OTFS as well as a possible implementation as an overlay to current or anticipated standardized systems. OTFS is shown to provide significant performance improvement in systems with high Doppler, short packets, and/or large antenna array. In particular, simulation results indicate at least several dB of block error rate performance improvement for OTFS over OFDM in all of these settings.
In this paper, we propose modulation diversity techniques for Spatial Modulation (SM) system using Complex Interleaved Orthogonal Design (CIOD) meant for two transmit antennas. Specifically, we show that by using the CIOD for two transmit antenna system, the standard SM scheme, where only one transmit antenna is activated in any symbol duration, can achieve a transmit diversity order of two. We show with our simulation results that the proposed schemes offer transmit diversity order of two, and hence, give a better Symbol Error Rate performance than the SM scheme with transmit diversity order …
The recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation technique was shown to provide significant error performance advantages over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in Doppler channels. In this paper, we derive the explicit input-output relation describing OTFS modulation and demodulation (mod/demod) for delay-Doppler channels. We analyze the interferences and develop a novel low-complexity yet efficient message passing (MP) algorithm for joint interference cancellation (IC) and symbol detection. The proposed MP algorithm can effectively compensate for a wide …
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes have been proved to increase the multiple-access achievable rate with respect to orthogonal multiple access (OMA). In this paper we propose a novel communication system that combines multi-level coded modulation and polar codes in a NOMA scenario. Computational complexity decreases with the proposed scheme with respect to state-of-the-art solutions. We also highlight the trade-off between error rate performance and computational complexity.
This letter is the first part of a three-part tutorial on orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation, which is a promising candidate waveform for future wireless networks. This letter introduces and compares two popular implementations of OTFS modulation, namely the symplectic finite Fourier transform (SFFT)- and discrete Zak transform (DZT)-based architectures. Based on these transceiver architectures, fundamental concepts of OTFS modulation, including the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, DD domain information multiplexing, and its potential benefits, are discussed. Finally, the challenges a…
In this paper, we propose a novel joint coding-modulation technique based on serial concatenation of orthogonal linear transform, such as discrete Fourier transform (DFT) or Walsh-Hadamard transform (WHT), with memoryless nonlinearity. We demonstrate that such a simple signal construction may exhibit properties of a random code ensemble, as a result approaching channel capacity. Our computer simulations confirm that if the decoder relies on a modified approximate message passing algorithm, the proposed modulation technique exhibits performance on par with state-of-the-art coded modulation sche…
We elaborate on the recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation technique, which provides significant advantages over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in Doppler channels. We first derive the input--output relation describing OTFS modulation and demodulation (mod/demod) for delay--Doppler channels with arbitrary number of paths, with given delay and Doppler values. We then propose a low-complexity message passing (MP) detection algorithm, which is suitable for large-scale OTFS taking advantage of the inherent channel sparsity. Since the fractional Doppl…
The orthogonal design of a Cyclic Block Filtered Multititone Modulation (CB-FMT) system is addressed. CB-FMT is a filter bank modulation scheme that uses frequency confined prototype pulses, similarly to Filtered Multitone Modulation (FMT). Differently from FMT, where the linear convolution is used, the cyclic convolution is exploited in CB-FMT. This allows to efficiently implement the system via a concatenation of discrete Fourier transforms (DFT). The necessary and sufficient orthogonality conditions are derived in time domain and frequency domain. Then, these conditions are expressed in mat…
In this paper, we investigate the design of a novel multicarrier (MC) modulation on delay-Doppler (DD) plane, to couple the modulated signal with a doubly-selective channel having DD resolutions. A key challenge for the design of DD plane MC modulation is to find a realizable pulse orthogonal with respect to the DD plane's fine resolutions. To this end, we first indicate that a feasible DD plane MC modulation is essentially a type of staggered multitone modulation. Then, we propose an orthogonal delay-Doppler division multiplexing (ODDM) modulation, and design the corresponding transmit pulse.…
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation was proposed to tackle the destructive Doppler effects in wireless communications, with potential applications to many other areas. In this paper, we investigate its application to radar systems, and propose a novel efficient OTFS-based matched filter algorithm for target range and velocity estimation. The proposed algorithm not only exhibits the inherent advantages due to multi-carrier modulation of the existing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM-) based radar algorithms but also provides additional benefits to improve radar capa…
In this paper, a novel spatial modulation aided non-orthogonal multiple access (SM-NOMA) system is proposed. We use mutual information (MI) to characterize the achievable spectral efficiency (SE) of the proposed SM-NOMA system. Due to the finite-alphabet space-domain inputs employed by SM, the expression of the corresponding MI lacks a closed-form formulation. Hence, a lower bound is proposed to quantify the MI of the SM-NOMA system. Furthermore, its asymptotic property is also theoretically investigated in both low and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions. The SE performance and its analy…
The sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks are envisioned to provide a global coverage for the intelligent digital society of the near future, ranging from traditional terrestrial to non-terrestrial networks, where reliable communications in high-mobility scenarios at high carrier frequencies would play a vital role. In such scenarios, the conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation, that has been widely used in both the fourth-generation (4G) and the emerging fifth-generation (5G) cellular systems as well as in WiFi networks, is vulnerable to severe Doppler spre…
We consider a relay channel for which the following assumptions are made. (1) The source-destination and relay-destination channels are orthogonal (frequency division relay channel). (2) The relay implements the decode-and-forward protocol. (3) The source and relay implement the same channel encoder, namely, a onvolutional encoder. (4) They can use arbitrary and possibly different modulations. In this framework, we derive the best combiner in the sense of the maximum likelihood (ML) at the destination and the branch metrics of the trellis associated with its channel decoder for the ML combiner…
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is a recently proposed multi-carrier transmission scheme, which innovatively multiplexes the information symbols in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain instead of the conventional time-frequency (TF) domain. The DD domain symbol multiplexing gives rise to a direct interaction between the DD domain information symbols and DD domain channel responses, which are usually quasi-static, compact, separable, and potentially sparse. Therefore, OTFS modulation enjoys appealing advantages over the conventional orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) m…
To combine the high power efficiency of Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) with either high spectral efficiency or enhanced performance in low Signal to Noise conditions, some authors have proposed to introduce CPM in a MIMO frame, by using Space Time Codes (STC). In this paper, we address the code design problem of Space Time Block Codes combined with CPM and introduce a new design criterion based on L2 orthogonality. This L2 orthogonality condition, with the help of simplifying assumption, leads, in the 2x2 case, to a new family of codes. These codes generalize the Wang and Xia code, which wa…
The fundamental concepts and challenges of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation have been reviewed in Part I of this three-part tutorial. In this second part, we provide an overview of the state-of-the-art transceiver designs for OTFS systems, with a particular focus on the cyclic prefix (CP) design, window design, pulse shaping, channel estimation, and signal detection. Furthermore, we analyze the performance of OTFS modulation, including the diversity gain and the achievable rate. Specifically, comparative simulations are presented to evaluate the error performance of different …
Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) is a novel modulation scheme designed in the Doppler-delay domain to fully exploit time and frequency diversity of general time-varying channels. In this paper, we present a novel discrete-time analysis of OFDM-based OTFS transceiver with a concise and vectorized input-output relationship that clearly characterizes the contribution of each underlying signal processing block in such systems. When adopting cyclic prefix in the time domain, our analysis reveals that the proposed MIMO OTFS and OFDM systems have the same ergodic capacity despite the well-known…
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is envisioned as an efficient candidate for future communication systems. This letter proposes a novel orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with index modulation (IM)-based NOMA scheme, called OFDM-IM NOMA, for future multi-user communication systems. Inspired by IM and classical OFDM-NOMA, users utilize flexibility by adjusting power allocation factors and subcarrier activation ratios. Our new scheme allows different service users to share available resources as in classical NOMA, more efficiently. It is shown that OFDM-IM NOMA reliably suppo…
Multi-antenna non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising technique to significantly improve the spectral efficiency and support massive access, which has received considerable interests from academic and industry. This article first briefly introduces the basic idea of conventional multi-antenna NOMA technique, and then discusses the key limitations, namely, the high complexity of successive interference cancellation(SIC) and the lack of fairness between the user with a strong channel gain and the user with a weak channel gain. To address these problems, this article proposes a novel…
This paper proposes orthogonal time sequency multiplexing (OTSM), a novel single carrier modulation scheme that places information symbols in the delay-sequency domain followed by a cascade of time-division multiplexing (TDM) and Walsh-Hadamard sequence multiplexing. Thanks to the Walsh Hadamard transform (WHT), the modulation and demodulation do not require complex domain multiplications. For the proposed OTSM, we first derive the input-output relation in the delay-sequency domain and present a low complexity detection method taking advantage of zero-padding. We demonstrate via simulations th…
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a multi-carrier modulation scheme that provides efficient bandwidth utilization and robustness against time dispersive channels. This paper deals with the basic system model for OFDM based systems and with self-interference, or the corruption of desired signal by itself in OFDM systems. A simple transceiver based on OFDM modulation is presented. Important impairments in OFDM systems are mathematically analyzed
In this work, we derive a equivalent delay-Doppler channel matrix of the Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation that has not been studied in previous literature. It has the similar structure as the banded channel matrix of OFDM systems over rapidly time-varying channels. However, the band in the equivalent channel matrix will no longer spread with the increase of the Doppler spread once the length of maximum channel delay spread and the OTFS frame duration are deter- mined. Furthermore, the equivalent channel matrix can simplify the OTFS modulation in the transmitter side. Incorpora…
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is a two-dimensional signaling technique that has recently emerged in the literature to tackle the time-varying (TV) wireless channels. OTFS deploys the Doppler-delay plane to multiplex the transmit data where the time variations of the TV channel are integrated over time and hence the equivalent channel relating the input and output of the system boils down to a time-invariant one. This signaling technique can be implemented on the top of a given multicarrier waveform with the addition of precoding and post-processing units to the modulator an…
In orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation, information-carrying symbols reside in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain. By operating in the DD domain, an appealing property for communication arises: time-frequency (TF) dispersive channels encountered in high mobility environments become time-invariant. The time-invariance of the channel in the DD domain enables efficient equalizers for time-frequency dispersive channels. In this paper, we propose an OTFS system based on the discrete Zak transform. The presented formulation not only allows an efficient implementation of OTFS but also simpli…
Orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation is a recently proposed waveform for efficient data transfer in high-speed vehicular scenarios. The use of rectangular pulse shape in OTFS results in high out of band (OoB) radiation, which is undesirable for multi-user scenarios. In this work, we present a circular pulse shaping framework for OTFS for reducing the OoB. We also design a low complexity transmitter for such a system. We argue in favor of orthogonal transmission for low complexity transceiver structure. We establish that frequency-localized circulant Dirichlet pulse is one of the p…
Directional modulation (DM) is a physical layer security technique based on antenna arrays and so far the polarisation information has not been considered in its designs. To increase the channel capacity, we consider exploiting the polarisation information and send two different signals simultaneously at the same direction, same frequency, but with different polarisations. These two signals can also be considered as one composite signal using the four dimensional (4-D) modulation scheme across the two polarisation diversity channels. In this paper, based on cross-dipole arrays, we formulate th…
Recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has been considered as a promising candidate for accommodating various emerging communication and sensing applications in high-mobility environments. In this paper, we propose a novel cross domain iterative detection algorithm to enhance the error performance of OTFS modulation. Different from conventional OTFS detection methods, the proposed algorithm applies basic estimation/detection approaches to both the time domain and delay-Doppler (DD) domain and iteratively updates the extrinsic information from two domains with the u…
The emerging orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation technique has shown its superiority to the current orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme, in terms of its capabilities of exploiting full time-frequency diversity and coping with channel dynamics. The optimal maximum a posteriori (MAP) detection is capable of eliminating the negative impacts of the inter-symbol interference in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain at the expense of a prohibitively high complexity. To reduce the receiver complexity for OTFS scheme, this paper proposes a variational Bayes (VB) approach as …
In this paper, we analyze the recently discovered delay-Doppler plane orthogonal pulse (DDOP), which is essential for delay-Doppler plane multi-carrier modulation waveform. In particular, we introduce a local orthogonality property of pulses corresponding to Weyl-Heisenberg (WH) subset and justify the DDOP's existence, in contrast to global orthogonality corresponding to WH set governed by the WH frame theory. Then, sufficient conditions for locally-orthogonal pulses are presented and discussed. Based on the analysis, we propose a general DDOP design. We also derive the frequency domain repres…
In this paper, we propose a physical layer security scheme that exploits a novel index modulation (IM) technique for coordinate interleaved orthogonal designs (CIOD). Utilizing the diversity gain of CIOD transmission, the proposed scheme, named CIOD-IM, provides an improved spectral efficiency by means of IM. In order to provide a satisfactory secrecy rate, we design a particular artificial noise matrix, which does not affect the performance of the legitimate receiver, while deteriorating the performance of the eavesdropper. We derive expressions of the ergodic secrecy rate and the theoretical…
Spectral efficiency improvement is a key focus in most wireless communication systems and achieved by various means such as using large antenna arrays and/or advanced modulation schemes and signal formats. This work proposes to further improve spectral efficiency through combining non-orthogonal spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) systems with index modulation (IM), which can efficiently make use of the indices of activated subcarriers as communication information. Recent research has verified that IM may be used with SEFDM to alleviate inter-carrier interference (ICI)…
The first two parts of this tutorial on orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation have discussed the fundamentals of delay-Doppler (DD) domain communications as well as some advanced technologies for transceiver design. In this letter, we will present an OTFS-based integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, which is regarded as an enabling technology in next generation wireless communications. In particular, we illustrate the sensing as well as the communication models for OTFS-ISAC systems. Next, we show that benefiting from time-invariant DD channels, the sensing parameters…
In this paper, a joint transmission coordinated multi-point based non-orthogonal multiple access (JT-COMP NOMA) combined with spatial modulation (SM), termed as JT-COMP NOMA-SM, is proposed to enhance capacity. User capacity and ergodic sum capacity (ESC) of M number coordinated multi-point base stations (COMP BSs) within N number of cells are analyzed by considering imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC) and imperfect channel state information (CSI). The performances of the proposed syatem are compared with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), and joint transmission coordinate…
Current implementations of OFDM/OQAM are restricted to band-limited symmetric filters. To circumvent this, non-symmetric conjugate root (CR) filters are proposed for OQAM modulation. The system is applied to Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM) and a method for achieving transmit diversity with OQAM modulation is presented. The proposal reduces implementation complexity compared to existing works and provides a more regular phase space. GFDM/CR-OQAM outperforms conventional GFDM in terms of symbol error rate in fading multipath channels and provides a more localized spectrum comp…
GFDM is a new modulation format whose advantages compared to OFDM reportedly make it a preferable modulation format for 5G. However, the non-orthogonal nature of GFDM with matched filtering (MF) receiver for pulses with good time-frequency localization is one of its disadvantages, leading to the proposal of WCP-COQAM, employing offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM). In this paper, we prove that a pulse satisfying orthogonality conditions for OQAM-OFDM will also satisfy orthogonality with WCP-COQAM, thus the pulse design methods developed for OQAM-OFDM can also be used with WCP-COQAM. T…
By using joint modulation and customized constellation set, we show that Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (QO-STBC) can be used to form a new differential space-time modulation (DSTM) scheme to provide full transmit diversity with non-coherent detection. Our new scheme can provide higher code rate than existing DSTM schemes based on Orthogonal STBC. It also has a lower decoding complexity than the other DSTM schemes, such as those based on Group Codes, because it only requires a joint detection of two complex symbols. We derive the design criteria for the customized constellation set and…
This paper presents a linear complexity iterative rake detector for the recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation scheme. The basic idea is to extract and combine the received multipath components of the transmitted symbols in the delay-Doppler grid using linear diversity combining schemes like maximal ratio combining (MRC), equal gain combining and selection combining to improve the SNR of the combined signal. We reformulate the OTFS input-output relation in the vector form by placing some null symbols in the delay-Doppler grid thereby exploiting the block circulant …
A novel modulation scheme termed orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) has been proposed and regarded as one of the promising candidate modulation schemes for next generation networks. Although OFDM-SNM is capable of having a higher spectral efficiency (SE) than OFDM with index modulation (OFDM-IM) and plain OFDM under certain conditions, its reliability is relatively inferior to these existing schemes, because the number of active subcarriers varies. In this regard, we propose an enhanced OFDM-SNM scheme in this paper, which utilizes the flexi…
The main objective of this project is to design the full-rate Space-Time-Frequency Trellis code (STFTC), which is based on Quasi-Orthogonal designs for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The proposed Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time-Frequency Trellis code combines set partitioning and the structure of quasi-orthogonal space-frequency designs in a systematic way. In addition to multipath diversity and transmit diversity, the proposed code provides receive diversity, array gain, and achieve high-coding gain over a frequency selective fadin…
We present a novel differential space-time modulation (DSTM) scheme that is single-symbol decodable and can provide full transmit diversity. It is the first known singlesymbol- decodable DSTM scheme not based on Orthogonal STBC (O-STBC), and it is constructed based on the recently proposed Minimum-Decoding-Complexity Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (MDC-QOSTBC). We derive the code design criteria and present systematic methodology to find the solution sets. The proposed DSTM scheme can provide higher code rate than DSTM schemes based on O-STBC. Its decoding complexity is also considerab…
A hierarchical modulation method is proposed for providing local content in a hybrid satellite and terrestrial single frequency network such DVB-SH. The hierarchical modulation is used to transmit both global and local content in terrestrial transmitters. The global content is transmitted with high priority layer of the hierarchical modulation, and the local content is modulated with the low priority layer of the hierarchical modulation. The satellite transmits global content only. The performance of the hierarchical system for both global and local content is analyzed.
The range resolution in conventional continuous time frequency modulation (CTFM) is inversely proportional to the signal bandwidth. The dual-demodulator continuous time frequency modulation (DD-CTFM) processing technique was proposed by Gough et al [1] as a method to increase the range resolution by making the output of DD-CTFM truly continuous. However, it has been found that in practice the range resolution is still limited by the signal bandwidth. The limitation of DD-CTFM has been explained using simulations and mathematically in this paper.
The orthogonal-time-frequency-space (OTFS) modulation has emerged as a promising modulation scheme for high mobility wireless communications. To harvest the time and frequency diversity promised by OTFS, some promising detectors, especially message passing based ones, have been developed by taking advantage of the sparsity of the channel in the delay-Doppler domain. However, when the number of channel paths is relatively large or fractional Doppler {shifts have} to be considered, the complexity of existing detectors is a concern, and the message passing based detectors may suffer from performa…
We develop two new designs of unitary differential space-time modulation (DSTM) with low decoding complexity. Their decoder can be separated into a few parallel decoders, each of which has a decoding search space of less than sqrt(N) if the DSTM codebook contains N codewords. Both designs are based on the concept of joint modulation, which means that several information symbols are jointly modulated, unlike the conventional symbol-by-symbol modulation. The first design is based on Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (O-STBC) with joint constellation constructed from spherical codes. The second de…
In this paper, we investigate the impacts of transmitter and receiver windows on the performance of orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation and propose window designs to improve the OTFS channel estimation and data detection performance. In particular, assuming ideal pulse shaping filters at the transceiver, we derive the impacts of windowing on the effective channel and its estimation performance in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, the total average transmit power and the effective noise covariance matrix. When the channel state information (CSI) is available at the transceiver, we an…
Bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) using (bi-)orthogonal signals is especially well suited for the application in impulse-radio ultra-wideband transmission systems, which typically operate in the power-limited regime and require a very low-complexity transmitter and receiver design. In this paper we analyze the capacity of BICM using (bi-)orthogonal signals with coherent and noncoherent detection and put particular focus on the power-limited or wideband regime. We give analytical expressions for the ratio energy per bit vs. noise power spectral density in the limit of infinite bandwidth a…
Hierarchical modulation (HM) is able to provide different levels of protection for data streams and achieve a rate region that cannot be realized by traditional orthogonal schemes, such as time division (TD). Nevertheless, criterions and algorithms for general HM design are not available in existing literatures. In this paper, we jointly optimize the constellation positions and binary labels for HM to be used in additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Based on bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) with successive interference cancellation (SIC) capacity, our main purpose is to maximize…
In this paper, we consider signals with intra-wave frequency modulation. To handle this kind of signals effectively, we generalize our data-driven time-frequency analysis by using a shape function to describe the intra-wave frequency modulation. The idea of using a shape function in time-frequency analysis was first proposed by Wu. A shape function could be any periodic function. Based on this model, we propose to solve an optimization problem to extract the shape function. By exploring the fact that s is a periodic function, we can identify certain low rank structure of the signal. This struc…
Receiver diversity combining methods play a key role in combating the detrimental effects of fadingin wireless communication and other applications. A novel diversity combining method is proposedwhere a universal, i.e., channel independent, orthogonal dimension-reducing space-time transformationis applied prior to quantization of the signals. The scheme may be considered as the counterpart ofAlamouti modulation, and more generally of orthogonal space-time block codes.

Design of Weyl-Heisenberg sets of waveforms for robust orthogonal frequency division multiplex- ing (OFDM) has been the subject of a considerable volume of work. In this paper, a complete parameterization of orthogonal Weyl-Heisenberg sets and their corresponding biorthogonal sets is given. Several examples of Weyl-Heisenberg sets designed using this parameterization are pre- sented, which in simulations show a high potential for enabling OFDM robust to frequency offset, timing mismatch, and narrow-band interference.
In this paper we introduce a new 2D modulation technique called OTFS (Orthogonal Time Frequency & Space) that transforms information carried in the Delay-Doppler coordinate system to the familiar time-frequency domain utilized by traditional modulation schemes such as OFDM, CDMA and TDMA. OTFS converts the fading, time-varying wireless channel into a non-fading, time-independent interaction revealing the underlying geometry of the wireless channel. In this new formulation, all QAM symbols experience the same channel and all Delay-Doppler diversity branches of the channel are coherently combine…
We discuss the application of coded modulation for power-line communications. We combine M-ary FSK with diversity and coding to make the transmission robust against permanent frequency disturbances and impulse noise. We give a particular example of the coding/modulation scheme that is in agreement with the existing CENELEC norms. The scheme can be considered as a form of coded Frequency Hopping and is thus extendable to any frequency range.
The contributions of this paper are twofold: Firstly, we introduce a novel class of sequence pairs, called "cross Z-complementary pairs (CZCPs)", each displaying zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) properties for both their aperiodic autocorrelation sums and crosscorrelation sums. Systematic constructions of perfect CZCPs based on selected Golay complementary pairs (GCPs) are presented. Secondly, we point out that CZCPs can be utilized as a key component in designing training sequences for broadband spatial modulation (SM) systems. We show that our proposed SM training sequences derived from CZCPs lea…
