By using joint modulation and customized constellation set, we show that Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (QO-STBC) can be used to form a new differential space-time modulation (DSTM) scheme to provide full transmit diversity with non-coherent detection. Our new scheme can provide higher code rate than existing DSTM schemes based on Orthogonal STBC. It also has a lower decoding complexity than the other DSTM schemes, such as those based on Group Codes, because it only requires a joint detection of two complex symbols. We derive the design criteria for the customized constellation set and use them to construct a constellation set that provides a wide range of spectral efficiency with full diversity and maximum coding gain.
We compare four open-loop transmit diversity schemes in a coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system with four transmit antennas, namely cyclic delay diversity (CDD), Space-Time Block Code (STBC, Alamouti code is used) with CDD, Quasi-Orthogonal STBC (QO-STBC) and Minimum-Decoding-Complexity QOSTBC (MDC-QOSTBC). We show that in a coded system with low code rate, a scheme with spatial transmit diversity of second order can achieve similar performance to that with spatial transmit diversity of fourth order due to the additional diversity provided by the phase shift diversity …
In this paper, we propose modulation diversity techniques for Spatial Modulation (SM) system using Complex Interleaved Orthogonal Design (CIOD) meant for two transmit antennas. Specifically, we show that by using the CIOD for two transmit antenna system, the standard SM scheme, where only one transmit antenna is activated in any symbol duration, can achieve a transmit diversity order of two. We show with our simulation results that the proposed schemes offer transmit diversity order of two, and hence, give a better Symbol Error Rate performance than the SM scheme with transmit diversity order …
We investigate asymptotic capacity limits of the Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel (BC) with spatially correlated fading to understand when and how much transmit correlation helps the capacity. By imposing a structure on channel covariances (equivalently, transmit correlations at the transmitter side) of users, also referred to as \emph{transmit correlation diversity}, the impact of transmit correlation on the power gain of MIMO BCs is characterized in several regimes of system parameters, with a particular interest in the large-scale array (or massive MIMO) regime. Taking the cost for downlink …
Zhang et. al. recently derived upper and lower bounds on the achievable diversity of an N_R x N_T i.i.d. Rayleigh fading multiple antenna system using transmit antenna selection, spatial multiplexing and a linear receiver structure. For the case of L = 2 transmitting (out of N_T available) antennas the bounds are tight and therefore specify the maximal diversity order. For the general case with L <= min(N_R,N_T) transmitting antennas it was conjectured that the maximal diversity is (N_T-L+1)(N_R-L+1) which coincides with the lower bound. Herein, we prove this conjecture for the zero forcing an…
Receiver diversity combining methods play a key role in combating the detrimental effects of fadingin wireless communication and other applications. A novel diversity combining method is proposedwhere a universal, i.e., channel independent, orthogonal dimension-reducing space-time transformationis applied prior to quantization of the signals. The scheme may be considered as the counterpart ofAlamouti modulation, and more generally of orthogonal space-time block codes.
A contemporary perspective on the tradeoff between transmit antenna diversity and spatial multiplexing is provided. It is argued that, in the context of most modern wireless systems and for the operating points of interest, transmission techniques that utilize all available spatial degrees of freedom for multiplexing outperform techniques that explicitly sacrifice spatial multiplexing for diversity. In the context of such systems, therefore, there essentially is no decision to be made between transmit antenna diversity and spatial multiplexing in MIMO communication. Reaching this conclusion, h…
We propose a joint discrete stochastic optimization based transmit diversity selection (TDS) and relay selection (RS) algorithm for decode-and-forward (DF), cooperative MIMO systems with a non-negligible direct path. TDS and RS are performed jointly with continuous least squares channel estimation (CE), linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) receivers are used at all nodes and no inter-relay communication is required. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated via bit-error rate (BER) comparisons and diversity analysis, and is shown to converge to the optimum exhaustive solution.
Correlation across transmit antennas, in multiple antenna systems (MIMO), has been studied in various scenarios and has been shown to be detrimental or provide benefits depending on the particular system and underlying assumptions. In this paper, we investigate the effect of transmit correlation on the capacity of the Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel (BC), with a particular interest in the large-scale array (or massive MIMO) regime. To this end, we introduce a new type of diversity, referred to as transmit correlation diversity, which captures the fact that the channel vectors of different user…
We analyze fading relay networks, where a single-antenna source-destination terminal pair communicates through a set of half-duplex single-antenna relays using a two-hop protocol with linear processing at the relay level. A family of relaying schemes is presented which achieves the entire optimal diversity-multiplexing (DM) tradeoff curve. As a byproduct of our analysis, it follows that delay diversity and phase-rolling at the relay level are optimal with respect to the entire DM-tradeoff curve, provided the delays and the modulation frequencies, respectively, are chosen appropriately.
In this letter, we investigate the performance of multiple-input multiple-output techniques in a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system. We consider both transmit antenna selection with maximal-ratio combining and transmit antenna selection with selection combining. The channel propagation model between two vehicles is represented as n*Rayleigh distribution, which has been shown to be a realistic model for vehicle-to-vehicle communication scenarios. We derive tight analytical expressions for the outage probability and amount of fading of the post-processing signal-to-noise ratio.
In this paper, we deal with the design of high-rate, full-diversity, low maximum likelihood (ML) decoding complexity space-time block codes (STBCs) with code rates of 2 and 1.5 complex symbols per channel use for multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems employing three and four transmit antennas. We fill the empty slots of the existing STBCs from CIODs in their transmission matrices by additional symbols and use the conditional ML decoding technique which significantly reduces the ML decoding complexity of non-orthogonal STBCs while ensuring full-diversity and high coding gain. First, two…
When the users in a MIMO broadcast channel experience different spatial transmit correlation matrices, a class of gains is produced that is denoted transmit correlation diversity. This idea was conceived for channels in which transmit correlation matrices have mutually exclusive eigenspaces, allowing non-interfering training and transmission. This paper broadens the scope of transmit correlation diversity to the case of partially and fully overlapping eigenspaces and introduces techniques to harvest these generalized gains. For the two-user MIMO broadcast channel, we derive achievable degrees …
Recently, the remarkable potential of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system was unveiled for its ability to provide spatial diversity or multiplexing gains. For MIMO diversity schemes, it is already known that. by the optimal antenna selection maximizing the post-processing signal-to-noise ratio, the diversity order of the full system can be maintained. On the other hand, the diversity order achieved by antenna selection in spatial multiplexing systems, especially those exploiting practical coding and decoding schemes, has not been rigorously analyzed thus far. …
For broadband wireless communication systems, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been combined with Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) techniques. Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming (BICMB) can achieve both spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing for flat fading MIMO channels. For frequency selective fading MIMO channels, BICMB with OFDM (BICMB-OFDM) can be applied to achieve both spatial diversity and multipath diversity, making it an important technique. However, analyzing the diversity of BICMB-OFDM is a challenging problem. In this paper, the diversity analysis o…
Orthogonal sets of idempotents are used to design sets of unitary matrices, known as constellations, such that the modulus of the determinant of the difference of any two distinct elements is greater than $0$. It is shown that unitary matrices in general are derived from orthogonal sets of idempotents reducing the design problem to a construction problem of unitary matrices from such sets. The quality of the constellations constructed in this way and the actual differences between the unitary matrices can be determined algebraically from the idempotents used. This has applications to the desig…
We study the effect of channel fading in Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) and show that fading enhances the RFto- DC conversion efficiency of nonlinear RF energy harvesters. We then develop a new form of signal design for WPT, denoted as Transmit Diversity, that relies on multiple dumb antennas at the transmitter to induce fast fluctuations of the wireless channel. Those fluctuations boost the RF-to-DC conversion efficiency thanks to the energy harvester nonlinearity. In contrast with (energy) beamforming, Transmit Diversity does not rely on Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) and…
In this paper, we address the finite Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT) of the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) wiretap channel, where a Zero-Forcing (ZF) transmit scheme, that intends to send the secret information in the orthogonal space of the eavesdropper channel, is used. First, we introduce the secrecy multiplexing gain at finite-SNR that generalizes the definition at high-SNR. Then, we provide upper and lower bounds on the outage probability under secrecy constraint, from which secrecy diversity gain estimates of ZF are derived. Through asymptotic ana…
We study coded multichannel random access schemes for ultra-reliable low-latency uplink transmissions. We concentrate on non-orthogonal access in the frequency domain, where users transmit over multiple orthogonal subchannels and inter-user collisions limit the available diversity. Two different models for contention-based random access over Rayleigh fading resources are investigated. First, a collision model is considered, in which the packet is replicated onto $K$ available resources, $K' \leq K$ of which are received without collision, and treated as diversity branches by a maximum-ratio co…
The main objective of this project is to design the full-rate Space-Time-Frequency Trellis code (STFTC), which is based on Quasi-Orthogonal designs for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The proposed Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time-Frequency Trellis code combines set partitioning and the structure of quasi-orthogonal space-frequency designs in a systematic way. In addition to multipath diversity and transmit diversity, the proposed code provides receive diversity, array gain, and achieve high-coding gain over a frequency selective fadin…
Simultaneous multiuser beamforming in multiantenna downlink channels can entail dirty paper (DP) precoding (optimal and high complexity) or linear precoding (suboptimal and low complexity) approaches. The system performance is typically characterized by the sum capacity with homogenous users with perfect channel state information at the transmitter. The sum capacity performance analysis requires the exact probability distributions of the user signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) or signal-to-interference plus noise ratios (SINRs). The standard techniques from order statistics can be sufficient to obt…
Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) techniques have been incorporated with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) for broadband wireless communication systems. Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming (BICMB) can achieve both spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing for flat fading MIMO channels. For frequency selective fading MIMO channels, BICMB with OFDM (BICMB-OFDM) can be employed to provide both spatial diversity and multipath diversity, making it an important technique. In our previous work, the subcarrier grouping technique was applied to combat the negative effect of subcar…
In this work, we study the performance of a single relay Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) cooperative communication system based on Decode and Forward (DF) relaying protocol for two strategies using transmit antenna selection at the source. The first strategy uses one antenna between the relay and the destination, and the second strategy uses Space Time Block Coding (STBC). All channels follow the Rayleigh fading distribution. We derive the expression and Upper Bound for Symbol Error Rate (SER) for M-ary Phase Shift Keying (M-PSK), and the diversity order for both strategies. The analytic…
In this paper, we study a layered random access scheme based on non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to improve the throughput of multichannel ALOHA. At a receiver, successive interference cancellation (SIC) is carried out across layers to remove the signals that are already decoded. A closed- form expression for the total throughput is derived under certain assumptions. It is shown that the transmission rates of layers can be optimized to maximize the total throughput and the proposed scheme can improve the throughput with multiple layers. Furthermore, it is shown that the optimal rates can …
Space-time block codes from square complex orthogonal designs (SCOD) have been extensively studied and most of the existing SCODs contain large number of zeros. The zeros in the designs result in high peak-to-average power ratio and also impose a severe constraint on hardware implementation of the code while turning off some of the transmitting antennas whenever a zero is transmitted. Recently, SCODs with no zero entry have been constructed for $2^a$ transmit antennas whenever $a+1$ is a power of 2. Though there exists codes for 4 and 16 transmit antennas with no zero entry, there is no genera…
In this paper we present an alternative separable implementation of L2-orthogonal space-time codes (STC) for continuous phase modulation (CPM). In this approach, we split the STC CPM transmitter into a single conventional CPM modulator and a correction filter bank. While the CPM modulator is common to all transmit antennas, the correction filter bank applies different correction units to each antenna. Thereby desirable code properties as orthogonality and full diversity are achievable with just a slightly larger bandwidth demand. This new representation has three main advantages. First, it all…
Orthogonality is a much desired property for MIMO coding. It enables symbol-wise decoding, where the errors in other symbol estimates do not affect the result, thus providing an optimality that is worth pursuing. Another beneficial property is a low complexity soft decision decoder, which for orthogonal complex MIMO codes is known for two transmit (Tx) antennas i.e. for the Alamouti code. We propose novel soft decision decoders for the orthogonal complex MIMO codes on three and four Tx antennas and extend the old result of maximal ratio combining (MRC) to cover all orthogonal codes up to four …
In this paper, we propose a systematic design of space-time block codes (STBC) which can achieve high rate and full diversity when the partial interference cancellation (PIC) group decoding is used at receivers. The proposed codes can be applied to any number of transmit antennas and admit a low decoding complexity while achieving full diversity. For M transmit antennas, in each codeword real and imaginary parts of PM complex information symbols are parsed into P diagonal layers and then encoded, respectively. With PIC group decoding, it is shown that the decoding complexity can be reduced to …
A novel detector for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications is presented. The algorithm belongs to the class of the lattice detectors, i.e. it finds a reduced complexity solution to the problem of finding the closest vector to the received observations. The algorithm achieves optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) performance in case of two transmit antennas, at the same time keeping a complexity much lower than the exhaustive search-based ML detection technique. Also, differently from the state-of-art lattice detector (namely sphere decoder), the proposed algorithm is suitable for a hi…
This paper presents two new space time block codes (STBCs) with quasi orthogonal structure for an open loop multi-input single-output (MISO) systems. These two codes have been designed to transmit from three or four antennas at the transmitter and be given to one antenna at the receiver. First, the proposed codes are introduced and their structures are investigated. This is followed by the demonstration of how the decoder decodes half of transmitted symbols independent of the other half. The last part of this paper discusses the simulation results, makes performance comparison against other po…
In this paper, we investigate the impacts of transmitter and receiver windows on the performance of orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation and propose window designs to improve the OTFS channel estimation and data detection performance. In particular, assuming ideal pulse shaping filters at the transceiver, we derive the impacts of windowing on the effective channel and its estimation performance in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, the total average transmit power and the effective noise covariance matrix. When the channel state information (CSI) is available at the transceiver, we an…
We study multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) based downlink heterogeneous cellular network (HetNets) with joint transmit-receive diversity using orthogonal space-time block codes at the base stations (BSs) and maximal-ratio combining (MRC) at the users. MIMO diversity with MRC is especially appealing in cellular networks due to the relatively low hardware complexity at both the BS and user device. Using stochastic geometry, we develop a tractable stochastic model for analyzing such HetNets taking into account the irregular and multi-tier BS deployment. We derive the coverage probability for …
The main focus of space-time coding design and analysis for MIMO systems has been so far focused on single-user systems. For single-user systems, transmit diversity schemes suffer a loss in spectral efficiency if the receiver is equipped with more than one antenna, making them unsuitable for high rate transmission. One such transmit diversity scheme is the cyclic delay diversity code (CDD). The advantage of CDD over other diversity schemes such as orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) is that a code rate of one and delay optimality are achieved independent of the number of transmit antenna…
Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a cost-effective solution to enhance wireless communication performance via passive signal reflection. Existing works on IRS have mainly focused on investigating IRS's passive beamforming/reflection design to boost the communication rate for users assuming that their channel state information (CSI) is fully or partially known. However, how to exploit IRS to improve the wireless transmission reliability without any CSI, which is typical in high-mobility/delay-sensitive communication scenarios, remains largely open. In this paper, we study a ne…
For a multiple antenna system, we compute the asymptotic distribution of antenna selection gain when the transmitter selects the transmit antenna with the strongest channel. We use this to asymptotically estimate the underlying channel capacity distributions, and demonstrate that unlike multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the channel for antenna selection systems hardens at a slower rate, and thus a significant multiuser scheduling gain can exist - O(1/ log m) for channel selection as opposed to O(1/ sqrt{m}) for MIMO, where m is the number of transmit antennas. Additionally, even w…
In this paper a MIMO quasi static block fading channel with finite N-ary delay-free, noise-free feedback is considered. The transmitter uses a set of N Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs), one corresponding to each of the N possible feedback values, to encode and transmit information. The feedback function used at the receiver and the N component STBCs used at the transmitter together constitute a Finite Feedback Scheme (FFS). Although a number of FFSs are available in the literature that provably achieve full-diversity, there is no known universal criterion to determine whether a given arbitrary F…
To combine the power efficiency of Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) with enhanced performance in fading environments, some authors have suggested to use CPM in combination with Space-Time Codes (STC). Recently, we have proposed a CPM ST-coding scheme based on L2-orthogonality for two transmitting antennas. In this paper we extend this approach to the three antennas case. We analytically derive a family of coding schemes which we call Parallel Code (PC). This code family has full rate and we prove that the proposed coding scheme achieves full diversity as confirmed by accompanying simulations.…
A Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (QO-STBC) is attractive because it achieves higher code rate than Orthogonal STBC and lower decoding complexity than nonorthogonal STBC. In this paper, we first derive the algebraic structure of QO-STBC, then we apply it in a novel graph-based search algorithm to find high-rate QO-STBCs with code rates greater than 1. From the four-antenna codes found using this approach, it is found that the maximum code rate is limited to 5/4 with symbolwise diversity level of four, and 4 with symbolwise diversity level of two. The maximum likelihood decoding of these…
In this work, a MIMO detection problem is considered. At first, we derive the Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) for arbitrary transmitted signals and arbitrary time-correlation of the disturbance. Then, we investigate design criteria for the transmitted waveforms in both power-unlimited and power-limited systems and we study the interplay among the rank of the optimized code matrix, the number of transmit diversity paths and the amount of energy integrated along each path. The results show that increasing the rank of the code matrix allows generating a larger number of diversity paths a…
Because of the emerging field of Internet of Things (IoT), future backscatter RFID is required to be more reliable and data intensive. Motivated by this, orthogonal space-time block code (OSTBC), which is very successful in mobile communications for its low complexity and high performance, has already been investigated for backscatter RFID. On the other hand, a recently proposed scheme called unitary query was shown to be able to considerably improve the reliability of backscatter radio by exploiting query diversity. Therefore incorporating the classical OSTBC (at the tag end) with the recentl…
We study the physical-layer security of a multiple source-destination (SD) pairs coexisting wireless network in the face of an eavesdropper, where an eavesdropper intends to wiretap the signal transmitted by the SD pairs. In order to protect the wireless transmission against eavesdropping, we propose a cooperation framework relying on two stages. Specifically, an SD pair is selected to access the total allocated spectrum using an appropriately designed scheme at the beginning of the first stage. The other source nodes (SNs) simultaneously transmit their data to the SN of the above-mentioned SD…
Space-Time Block Codes from square complex orthogonal designs (SCOD) have been extensively studied and most of the existing SCODs contain large number of zero. The zeros in the designs result in high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and also impose a severe constraint on hardware implementation of the code when turning off some of the transmitting antennas whenever a zero is transmitted. Recently, rate 1/2 SCODs with no zero entry have been reported for 8 transmit antennas. In this paper, SCODs with no zero entry for $2^a$ transmit antennas whenever $a+1$ is a power of 2, are constructed whi…
We consider joint scheduling and diversity to enhance the benefits of multiuser diversity in an \OFDMA{} system. The \OFDMA{} spectrum is assumed to consist of $\Nrb$ resource blocks and the reduced feedback scheme consists of each user feeding back channel quality information (\CQI) for only the best-$\NFb$ resource blocks. Assuming largest normalized \CQI{} scheduling and a general value for $\NFb$, we develop a unified framework to analyze the sum rate of the system for both the quantized and non-quantized \CQI{} feedback schemes. Based on this framework, we provide closed-form expressions …
To optimize rotated, multidimensional constellations over a single-input, single-output Rayleigh fading channel, a family of rotation matrices is constructed for all dimensions which are a power of 2. This family is a one-parameter subgroup of the group of rotation matrices, and is located using a gradient descent scheme on this Lie group. The parameter defining the family is chosen to optimize the cutoff rate of the constellation. The optimal rotation parameter is computed explicitly for low signal-to-noise ratios. These rotations outperform full-diversity algebraic rotations in terms of cuto…
Recently, a quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QSTBC) capable of achieving a significant fraction of the outage mutual information of a multiple-input-multiple output (MIMO) wireless communication system for the case of four transmit and one receive antennas was proposed. We generalize these results to $n_T=2^n$ transmit and an arbitrary number of receive antennas $n_R$. Furthermore, we completely characterize the structure of the equivalent channel for the general case and show that for all $n_T=2^n$ and $n_R$ the eigenvectors of the equivalent channel are fixed and independent from the …
The Golden Code is a full-rate full-diversity space-time code, which achieves maximum coding gain for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems with two transmit and two receive antennas. Since four information symbols taken from an M-QAM constellation are selected to construct one Golden Code codeword, a maximum likelihood decoder using sphere decoding has the worst-case complexity of O(M^4), when the Channel State Information (CSI) is available at the receiver. Previously, this worst-case complexity was reduced to O(M^(2.5)) without performance degradation. When the CSI is known by the t…
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is widely recognized as a potential multiple access (MA) technology for efficient spectrum utilization in the fifth-generation (5G) wireless standard. In this paper, we present the achievable sum rate analysis of a cooperative relaying system (CRS) using NOMA with two different receive diversity schemes - selection combining (SC), where the antenna with highest instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is selected, and maximal-ratio combining (MRC). We also present the outage probability and diversity analysis for the CRS-NOMA system. Analytical results co…
It is well known that orthogonal coding can be used to approach the Shannon capacity of the power-constrained AWGN channel without a bandwidth constraint. This correspondence describes a semi-orthogonal variation of pulse position modulation that is sequential in nature -- bits can be ``streamed across'' without having to buffer up blocks of bits at the transmitter. ML decoding results in an exponentially small probability of error as a function of tolerated receiver delay and thus eventually a zero probability of error on every transmitted bit. In the high-rate regime, a matching upper bound …
Space-time block codes (STBCs) from non-square complex orthogonal designs are bandwidth efficient when compared with those from square real/complex orthogonal designs. Though there exists rate-1 ROD for any number of transmit antennas, rate-1 complex orthogonal designs (COD) does not exist for more than 2 transmit antennas. Liang (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 2003) and Lu et al (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 2005) have constructed a class of maximal rate non-square CODs where the rate is ${1/2}+\frac{1}{n}$ if number of transmit antennas $n$ is even and ${1/2}+\frac{1}{n+1}$ if $n$ is odd. In thi…
In this work, we consider the problem of coding for the half-duplex non-orthogonal amplify-and-forward (NAF) cooperative channel where the transmitter to relay and the inter-relay links are highly reliable. We derive bounds on the diversity order of the NAF protocol that are achieved by a distributed space-time bit-interleaved coded modulation (D-ST-BICM) scheme under iterative APP detection and decoding. These bounds lead to the design of space-time precoders that ensure maximum diversity order and high coding gains. The word error rate performance of D-ST-BICM are also compared to outage pro…
This paper investigates the impact of physical layer secrecy on the performance of a unified non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) framework, where both external and internal eavesdropping scenarios are examined. The spatial locations of legitimate users (LUs) and eavesdroppers are modeled by invoking stochastic geometry. To characterize the security performance, new exact and asymptotic expressions of secrecy outage probability (SOP) are derived for both code-domain NOMA (CD-NOMA) and power-domain NOMA (PD-NOMA), in which imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC) and perfect SIC …
Precoding for multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems is considered with perfect channel knowledge available at both the transmitter and the receiver. For 2 transmit antennas and QAM constellations, an approximately optimal (with respect to the minimum Euclidean distance between points in the received signal space) real-valued precoder based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the channel is proposed, and it is shown to offer a maximum-likelihood (ML)-decoding complexity of $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{M})$ for square $M$-QAM. The proposed precoder is obtainable easily for arbitr…
This paper aims to provide a comprehensive solution for the design, analysis, and optimization of a multiple-antenna non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system for multiuser downlink communication with both time duplex division (TDD) and frequency duplex division (FDD) modes. First, we design a new framework for multiple-antenna NOMA, including user clustering, channel state information (CSI) acquisition, superposition coding, transmit beamforming, and successive interference cancellation (SIC). Then, we analyze the performance of the considered system, and derive exact closed-form expressio…
In this paper, we consider a quasi-orthogonal (QO) space-time block code (STBC) with minimum decoding complexity (MDC-QO-STBC). We formulate its algebraic structure and propose a systematic method for its construction. We show that a maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder for this MDC-QOSTBC, for any number of transmit antennas, only requires the joint detection of two real symbols. Assuming the use of a square or rectangular quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) or multiple phase-shift keying (MPSK) modulation for this MDC-QOSTBC, we also obtain the optimum constellation rotation angle, in order to a…
This paper is concerned with decentralized estimation of a Gaussian source using multiple sensors. We consider a diversity scheme where only the sensor with the best channel sends their measurements over a fading channel to a fusion center, using the analog amplify and forwarding technique. The fusion centre reconstructs an MMSE estimate of the source based on the received measurements. A distributed version of the diversity scheme where sensors decide whether to transmit based only on their local channel information is also considered. We derive asymptotic expressions for the expected distort…
In this paper, we first derive the generic algebraic structure of a Quasi-Orthogonal STBC (QO-STBC). Next we propose Group-Constrained Linear Transformation (GCLT) as a means to optimize the diversity and coding gains of a QO-STBC with square or rectangular QAM constellations. Compared with QO-STBC with constellation rotation (CR), we show that QO-STBC with GCLT requires only half the number of symbols for joint detection, hence lower maximum-likelihood decoding complexity. We also derive analytically the optimum GCLT parameters for QO-STBC with square QAM constellation. The optimized QO-STBCs…
We study the problem of unsourced random access (URA) over Rayleigh block-fading channels with a receiver equipped with multiple antennas. We employ multiple stages of orthogonal pilots, each of which is randomly picked from a codebook. In the proposed scheme, each user encodes its message using a polar code and appends it to the selected pilot sequences to construct its transmitted signal. Accordingly, the received signal consists of superposition of the users' signals each composed of multiple orthogonal pilot parts and a polar coded part. We use an iterative approach for decoding the transm…
Physical-layer network coding (PNC) is now well-known as a potential candidate for delay-sensitive and spectrally efficient communication applications, especially in two-way relay channels (TWRCs). In this paper, we present the error performance analysis of a multiple-input single-output (MISO) fixed network coding (FNC) system with two different transmit antenna selection (TAS) schemes. For the first scheme, where the antenna selection is performed based on the strongest channel, we derive a tight closed-form upper bound on the average symbol error rate (SER) with $M$-ary modulation and show …
Beamforming techniques that employ Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) are commonly used in Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) wireless communication systems. In the absence of channel coding, when a single symbol is transmitted, these systems achieve the full diversity order provided by the channel; whereas when multiple symbols are simultaneously transmitted, this property is lost. When channel coding is employed, full diversity order can be achieved. For example, when Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM) is combined with this technique, full diversity order of NM in an MxN MIMO channel trans…
