In the present article, we discuss jackknife empirical likelihood (JEL) and adjusted jackknife empirical likelihood (AJEL) based inference for finding confidence intervals for probability weighted moment (PWM). We obtain the asymptotic distribution of the JEL ratio and AJEL ratio statistics. We compare the performance of the proposed confidence intervals with recently developed methods in terms of coverage probability and average length. We also develop JEL and AJEL based test for PWM and study it properties. Finally we illustrate our method using rainfall data of Indian states.
We propose the so-called jackknife empirical likelihood approach for the survey data of general unequal probability sampling designs, and analyze parameters defined according to U-statistics. We prove theoretically that jackknife pseudo-empirical likelihood ratio statistic is asymptotically distributed as a chi-square random variable, and can be used to construct confidence intervals for complex survey samples. In the process of research, we consider with or without auxiliary information, utilizing design weights or calibration weights. Simulation studies are included to examine that in terms …
The Gini correlation plays an important role in measuring dependence of random variables with heavy tailed distributions, whose properties are a mixture of Pearson's and Spearman's correlations. Due to the structure of this dependence measure, there are two Gini correlations between each pair of random variables, which are not equal in general. Both the Gini correlation and the equality of the two Gini correlations play important roles in Economics. In the literature, there are limited papers focusing on the inference of the Gini correlations and their equality testing. In this paper, we devel…
We use the jackknife to bias correct the log-periodogram regression(LPR) estimator of the fractional parameter in a stationary fractionally integrated model. The weights for the jackknife estimator are chosen in such a way that bias reduction is achieved without the usual increase in asymptotic variance, with the estimator viewed as `optimal' in this sense. The theoretical results are valid under both the non-overlapping and moving-block sub-sampling schemes that can be used in the jackknife technique, and do not require the assumption of Gaussianity for the data generating process. A Monte Ca…
Jackknife empirical likelihood (JEL) is an effective modified version of empirical likelihood method (EL). Through the construction of the jackknife pseudo-values, JEL overcomes the computational difficulty of EL method when its constraints are nonlinear while maintaining the same asymptotic results for one sample and two-sample U statistics. In this paper, we propose an adjusted version of JEL to guarantee that the adjusted jackknife empirical likelihood (AJEL) statistic is well-defined for all the values of the parameter, instead of restricting on the convex hull of the estimation equation. …
This paper studies the asymptotic properties of and alternative inference methods for kernel density estimation (KDE) for dyadic data. We first establish uniform convergence rates for dyadic KDE. Secondly, we propose a modified jackknife empirical likelihood procedure for inference. The proposed test statistic is asymptotically pivotal regardless of presence of dyadic clustering. The results are further extended to cover the practically relevant case of incomplete dyadic data. Simulations show that this modified jackknife empirical likelihood-based inference procedure delivers precise coverage…
Inference procedures in sequential trial emulation with survival outcomes: comparing confidence intervals based on the sandwich variance estimator, bootstrap and jackknife
The categorical Gini correlation is an alternative measure of dependence between a categorical and numerical variables, which characterizes the independence of the variables. A nonparametric test for the equality of K distributions has been developed based on the categorical Gini correlation. By applying the jackknife empirical likelihood approach, the standard limiting chi-square distribution with degree freedom of $K-1$ is established and is used to determine critical value and $p$-value of the test. Simulation studies show that the proposed method is competitive to existing methods in terms…
In many applications, parameters of interest are estimated by solving some non-smooth estimating equations with $U$-statistic structure. Jackknife empirical likelihood (JEL) approach can solve this problem efficiently by reducing the computation complexity of the empirical likelihood (EL) method. However, as EL, JEL suffers the sensitivity problem to outliers. In this paper, we propose a weighted jackknife empirical likelihood (WJEL) to tackle the above limitation of JEL. The proposed WJEL tilts the JEL function by assigning smaller weights to outliers. The asymptotic of the WJEL ratio statist…
A novel approach to obtain weighted likelihood estimates of multivariate location and scatter is discussed. A weighting scheme is proposed that is based on the distribution of the Mahalanobis distances rather than the distribution of the data at the assumed model. This strategy allows to avoid the curse of dimensionality affecting non-parametric density estimation, that is involved in the construction of the weights through the Pearson residuals Markatou et al (1998). Then, weighted likelihood based outlier detection rules and robust dimensionality reduction techniques are developed. The effec…
Introductory texts on statistics typically only cover the classical "two sigma" confidence interval for the mean value and do not describe methods to obtain confidence intervals for other estimators. The present technical report fills this gap by first defining different methods for the construction of confidence intervals, and then by their application to a binomial proportion, the mean value, and to arbitrary estimators. Beside the frequentist approach, the likelihood ratio and the highest posterior density approach are explained. Two methods to estimate the variance of general maximum likel…
In this paper, we propose an empirical likelihood-based weighted estimator of regression parameter in quantile regression model with nonignorable missing covariates. The proposed estimator is computationally simple and achieves semiparametric efficiency if the probability of missingness on the fully observed variables is correctly specified. The efficiency gain of the proposed estimator over the complete-case-analysis estimator is quantified theoretically and illustrated via simulation and a real data application.
We discuss a new weighted likelihood method for parametric estimation. The method is motivated by the need for generating a simple estimation strategy which provides a robust solution that is simultaneously fully efficient when the model is correctly specified. This is achieved by appropriately weighting the score function at each observation in the maximum likelihood score equation. The weight function determines the compatibility of each observation with the model in relation to the remaining observations and applies a downweighting only if it is necessary, rather than automatically downweig…
Bivariate extreme-value distributions have been used in modeling extremes in environmental sciences and risk management. An important issue is estimating the dependence function, such as the Pickands dependence function. Some estimators for the Pickands dependence function have been studied by assuming that the marginals are known. Recently, Genest and Segers [Ann. Statist. 37 (2009) 2990-3022] derived the asymptotic distributions of those proposed estimators with marginal distributions replaced by the empirical distributions. In this article, we propose a class of weighted estimators includin…
In the present article, we propose jackknife empirical likelihood (JEL) ratio test for testing the independence of time to failure and cause of failure in competing risks data. We use U-statistic theory to derive the JEL ratio test. The asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is shown to be chi-square distribution with one degree of freedom. A Monte Carlo simulation study is carried out to assess the finite sample behaviour of the proposed test. The performance of proposed JEL test is compared with the test given in Dewan et al. (2004). Finally we illustrate our test procedure using vari…
Vertically weighted averages perform a bilateral filtering of data, in order to preserve fine details of the underlying signal, especially discontinuities such as jumps (in dimension one) or edges (in dimension two). In homogeneous regions of the domain the procedure smoothes the data by averaging nearby data points to reduce the noise, whereas in inhomogenous regions the neighboring points are only taken into account when their value is close to the current one. This results in a denoised reconstruction or estimate of the true signal without blurring finer details. This paper addresses the la…
Mixture models are a popular tool in model-based clustering. Such a model is often fitted by a procedure that maximizes the likelihood, such as the EM algorithm. At convergence, the maximum likelihood parameter estimates are typically reported, but in most cases little emphasis is placed on the variability associated with these estimates. In part this may be due to the fact that standard errors are not directly calculated in the model-fitting algorithm, either because they are not required to fit the model, or because they are difficult to compute. The examination of standard errors in model-b…
This paper establishes unified frameworks of renewable weighted sums (RWS) for various online updating estimations in the models with streaming data sets. The newly defined RWS lays the foundation of online updating likelihood, online updating loss function, online updating estimating equation and so on. The idea of RWS is intuitive and heuristic, and the algorithm is computationally simple. This paper chooses nonparametric model as an exemplary setting. The RWS applies to various types of nonparametric estimators, which include but are not limited to nonparametric likelihood, quasi-likelihood…
In this paper, we apply empirical likelihood method to inference for the regression parameters in the partial functional linear regression models based on B spline. We prove that the empirical log likelihood ratio for the regression parameters converges in law to a weighted sum of independent chi square distributions and run simulations to assess the finite sample performance of our method.
We investigate a generalized empirical likelihood approach in a two-group setting where the constraints on parameters have a form of U-statistics. In this situation, the summands that consist of the constraints for the empirical likelihood are not independent, and a weight of each summand may not have a direct interpretation as a probability point mass, dissimilar to the common empirical likelihood constraints based on independent summands. We show that the resulting empirical likelihood ratio statistic has a weighted chi-squared distribution in the univariate case and a combination of weighte…
This paper explores Maximum Likelihood in parametric models in the context of Sanov type Large Deviation Probabilities. MLE in parametric models under weighted sampling is shown to be associated with the minimization of a specific divergence criterion defined with respect to the distribution of the weights. Some properties of the resulting inferential procedure are presented; Bahadur efficiency of tests are also considered in this context.
We consider partly linear transformation models applied to current status data. The unknown quantities are the transformation function, a linear regression parameter and a nonparametric regression effect. It is shown that the penalized MLE for the regression parameter is asymptotically normal and efficient and converges at the parametric rate, although the penalized MLE for the transformation function and nonparametric regression effect are only $n^{1/3}$ consistent. Inference for the regression parameter based on a block jackknife is investigated. We also study computational issues and demons…
In the last years there has been a growing interest in proposing methods for estimating covariance functions for geostatistical data. Among these, maximum likelihood estimators have nice features when we deal with a Gaussian model. However maximum likelihood becomes impractical when the number of observations is very large. In this work we review some solutions and we contrast them in terms of loss of statistical efficiency and computational burden. Specifically we focus on three types of weighted composite likelihood functions based on pairs and we compare them with the method of covariance t…

Compared to the conditional mean as a simple point estimator, the conditional density function is more informative to describe the distributions with multi-modality, asymmetry or heteroskedasticity. In this paper, we propose a novel parametric conditional density estimation method by showing the connection between the general density and the likelihood function of inhomogeneous Poisson process models. The maximum likelihood estimates can be obtained via weighted logistic regressions, and the computation can be significantly relaxed by combining a block-wise alternating maximization scheme and …
Cluster-weighted modeling (CWM) is a mixture approach for modeling the joint probability of a response variable and a set of explanatory variables. The parameters are estimated by means of the expectation-maximization algorithm according to the maximum likelihood approach. Under Gaussian assumptions, we analyse the complete-data likelihood function of cluster weighted models. Further, under suitable hypotheses we show that the maximization of the likelihood function of Gaussian cluster weighted models leads to the same parameter estimates of finite mixtures of regression and finite mixtures of…
The role played by the composite analogue of the log likelihood ratio in hypothesis testing and in setting confidence regions is not as prominent as it is in the canonical likelihood setting, since its asymptotic distribution depends on the unknown parameter. Approximate pivots based on the composite log likelihood ratio can be derived by using asymptotic arguments. However, the actual distribution of such pivots may differ considerably from the asymptotic reference, leading to tests and confidence regions whose levels are distant from the nominal ones. The use of bootstrap rather than asympto…
In this article, the weighted empirical likelihood is applied to a general setting of two-sample semiparametric models, which includes biased sampling models and case-control logistic regression models as special cases. For various types of censored data, such as right censored data, doubly censored data, interval censored data and partly interval-censored data, the weighted empirical likelihood-based semiparametric maximum likelihood estimator $(\tildeθ_n,\tilde{F}_n)$ for the underlying parameter $θ_0$ and distribution $F_0$ is derived, and the strong consistency of $(\tildeθ_n,\tilde{F}_n)$…
Thus far, likelihood-based interval estimates for quantiles have not been studied in the literature on interval censored case 2 data and partly interval censored data, and, in this context, the use of smoothing has not been considered for any type of censored data. This article constructs smoothed weighted empirical likelihood ratio confidence intervals (WELRCI) for quantiles in a unified framework for various types of censored data, including right censored data, doubly censored data, interval censored data and partly interval censored data. The fourth order expansion of the weighted empirica…
This paper investigates the asymptotic theory of the quasi-maximum exponential likelihood estimators (QMELE) for ARMA--GARCH models. Under only a fractional moment condition, the strong consistency and the asymptotic normality of the global self-weighted QMELE are obtained. Based on this self-weighted QMELE, the local QMELE is showed to be asymptotically normal for the ARMA model with GARCH (finite variance) and IGARCH errors. A formal comparison of two estimators is given for some cases. A simulation study is carried out to assess the performance of these estimators, and a real example on the…
Energy distance is a statistical distance between the distributions of random variables, which characterizes the equality of the distributions. Utilizing the energy distance, we develop a nonparametric test for the diagonal symmetry, which is consistent against any fixed alternatives. The test statistic developed in this paper is based on the difference of two $U$-statistics. By applying the jackknife empirical likelihood approach, the standard limiting chi-square distribution with degree freedom of one is established and is used to determine critical value and $p$-value of the test. Simulatio…
We develop asymptotic theory for weighted likelihood estimators (WLE) under two-phase stratified sampling without replacement. We also consider several variants of WLEs involving estimated weights and calibration. A set of empirical process tools are developed including a Glivenko-Cantelli theorem, a theorem for rates of convergence of M-estimators, and a Donsker theorem for the inverse probability weighted empirical processes under two-phase sampling and sampling without replacement at the second phase. Using these general results, we derive asymptotic distributions of the WLE of a finite-dim…
In this paper, we compare maximum likelihood (ML), quasi likelihood (QL) and weighted least squares (WLS) estimators for proportional error nonlinear regression models. Literature on thermoluminescence sedimentary dating revealed another estimator similar to weighted least squares but observed responses used as weights. This estimator that we refer to as data weighted least squares (DWLS) is also included in the comparison. We show that on the order $σ, $ all four estimators behave similar to ordinary least squares estimators for standard linear regression models. On the order of $σ^2, $ the e…
In the current paper, the estimation of the probability density function and the cumulative distribution function of the Topp-Leone distribution is considered. We derive the following estimators: maximum likelihood estimator, uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator, percentile estimator, least squares estimator and weighted least squares estimator. A simulation study shows that the maximum likelihood estimator is more efficient than the others estimators.
