The categorical Gini correlation is an alternative measure of dependence between a categorical and numerical variables, which characterizes the independence of the variables. A nonparametric test for the equality of K distributions has been developed based on the categorical Gini correlation. By applying the jackknife empirical likelihood approach, the standard limiting chi-square distribution with degree freedom of $K-1$ is established and is used to determine critical value and $p$-value of the test. Simulation studies show that the proposed method is competitive to existing methods in terms of power of the tests in most cases. The proposed method is illustrated in an application on a real data set.
Jackknife empirical likelihood (JEL) is an effective modified version of empirical likelihood method (EL). Through the construction of the jackknife pseudo-values, JEL overcomes the computational difficulty of EL method when its constraints are nonlinear while maintaining the same asymptotic results for one sample and two-sample U statistics. In this paper, we propose an adjusted version of JEL to guarantee that the adjusted jackknife empirical likelihood (AJEL) statistic is well-defined for all the values of the parameter, instead of restricting on the convex hull of the estimation equation. …
We propose the so-called jackknife empirical likelihood approach for the survey data of general unequal probability sampling designs, and analyze parameters defined according to U-statistics. We prove theoretically that jackknife pseudo-empirical likelihood ratio statistic is asymptotically distributed as a chi-square random variable, and can be used to construct confidence intervals for complex survey samples. In the process of research, we consider with or without auxiliary information, utilizing design weights or calibration weights. Simulation studies are included to examine that in terms …
In the present article, we discuss jackknife empirical likelihood (JEL) and adjusted jackknife empirical likelihood (AJEL) based inference for finding confidence intervals for probability weighted moment (PWM). We obtain the asymptotic distribution of the JEL ratio and AJEL ratio statistics. We compare the performance of the proposed confidence intervals with recently developed methods in terms of coverage probability and average length. We also develop JEL and AJEL based test for PWM and study it properties. Finally we illustrate our method using rainfall data of Indian states.
In many applications, parameters of interest are estimated by solving some non-smooth estimating equations with $U$-statistic structure. Jackknife empirical likelihood (JEL) approach can solve this problem efficiently by reducing the computation complexity of the empirical likelihood (EL) method. However, as EL, JEL suffers the sensitivity problem to outliers. In this paper, we propose a weighted jackknife empirical likelihood (WJEL) to tackle the above limitation of JEL. The proposed WJEL tilts the JEL function by assigning smaller weights to outliers. The asymptotic of the WJEL ratio statist…
The Gini correlation plays an important role in measuring dependence of random variables with heavy tailed distributions, whose properties are a mixture of Pearson's and Spearman's correlations. Due to the structure of this dependence measure, there are two Gini correlations between each pair of random variables, which are not equal in general. Both the Gini correlation and the equality of the two Gini correlations play important roles in Economics. In the literature, there are limited papers focusing on the inference of the Gini correlations and their equality testing. In this paper, we devel…
Mixture models are a popular tool in model-based clustering. Such a model is often fitted by a procedure that maximizes the likelihood, such as the EM algorithm. At convergence, the maximum likelihood parameter estimates are typically reported, but in most cases little emphasis is placed on the variability associated with these estimates. In part this may be due to the fact that standard errors are not directly calculated in the model-fitting algorithm, either because they are not required to fit the model, or because they are difficult to compute. The examination of standard errors in model-b…
This paper introduces the jackknife+, which is a novel method for constructing predictive confidence intervals. Whereas the jackknife outputs an interval centered at the predicted response of a test point, with the width of the interval determined by the quantiles of leave-one-out residuals, the jackknife+ also uses the leave-one-out predictions at the test point to account for the variability in the fitted regression function. Assuming exchangeable training samples, we prove that this crucial modification permits rigorous coverage guarantees regardless of the distribution of the data points, …
Energy distance is a statistical distance between the distributions of random variables, which characterizes the equality of the distributions. Utilizing the energy distance, we develop a nonparametric test for the diagonal symmetry, which is consistent against any fixed alternatives. The test statistic developed in this paper is based on the difference of two $U$-statistics. By applying the jackknife empirical likelihood approach, the standard limiting chi-square distribution with degree freedom of one is established and is used to determine critical value and $p$-value of the test. Simulatio…
Several works have been undertaken in the context of proportional reversed hazard rate (PRHR) since last few decades. But any specific statistical methodology for the PRHR hypothesis is absent in the literature. In this paper, a two-sample nonparametric test based on two independent samples is proposed for verifying the PRHR assumption. Based on a consistent U-statistic three statistical methodologies have been developed exploiting U-statistics theory, jackknife empirical likelihood and adjusted jackknife empirical likelihood method. A simulation study has been performed to assess the merit of…
We give analytic methods for nonparametric bias reduction that remove the need for computationally intensive methods like the bootstrap and the jackknife. We call an estimate {\it $p$th order} if its bias has magnitude $n_0^{-p}$ as $n_0 \to \infty$, where $n_0$ is the sample size (or the minimum sample size if the estimate is a function of more than one sample). Most estimates are only first order and require O(N) calculations, where $N$ is the total sample size. The usual bootstrap and jackknife estimates are second order but they are computationally intensive, requiring $O(N^2)$ calculation…
We propose a new approach that combines multiple non-parametric likelihood-type components to build a data-driven approximation of the true likelihood function. Our approach is built on empirical likelihood, a non-parametric approximation of the likelihood function. We show the asymptotic behaviors of our approach are identical to those seen in empirical likelihood. We demonstrate that our method performs comparably to empirical likelihood while significantly decreasing computational time.
In the present article, we propose jackknife empirical likelihood (JEL) ratio test for testing the independence of time to failure and cause of failure in competing risks data. We use U-statistic theory to derive the JEL ratio test. The asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is shown to be chi-square distribution with one degree of freedom. A Monte Carlo simulation study is carried out to assess the finite sample behaviour of the proposed test. The performance of proposed JEL test is compared with the test given in Dewan et al. (2004). Finally we illustrate our test procedure using vari…
For linear models with spatial errors, the empirical likelihood ratio statistics are constructed for the parameters of the models. It is shown that the limiting distributions of the empirical likelihood ratio statistics are chi-squared distributions, which are used to construct confidence regions for the parameters of the models.
In this paper, we apply empirical likelihood method to inference for the regression parameters in the partial functional linear regression models based on B spline. We prove that the empirical log likelihood ratio for the regression parameters converges in law to a weighted sum of independent chi square distributions and run simulations to assess the finite sample performance of our method.
We consider the problem of constructing confidence intervals for nonparametric functional data analysis using empirical likelihood. In this doubly infinite-dimensional context, we demonstrate the Wilks's phenomenon and propose a bias-corrected construction that requires neither undersmoothing nor direct bias estimation. We also extend our results to partially linear regression involving functional data. Our numerical results demonstrated the improved performance of empirical likelihood over approximation based on asymptotic normality.
Empirical likelihood method has been applied to dependent observations by Monti (1997) through the Whittle's estimation method. Similar asymptotic distribution of the empirical likelihood ratio statistic for stationary time series has been derived to construct the confidence regions for the parameters. However, required numerical problem of computing profile empirical likelihood function which involves constrained maximization has no solution sometimes, which leads to the drawbacks of using the original version of the empirical likelihood ratio. In this paper, we propose an adjusted empirical …
Empirical likelihood method has been applied to short-memory time series models by Monti (1997) through the Whittle's estimation method. Yau (2012) extended this idea to long-memory time series models. Asymptotic distributions of the empirical likelihood ratio statistic for short and long-memory time series have been derived to construct confidence regions for the corresponding model parameters. However, computing profile empirical likelihood function involving constrained maximization does not always have a solution which leads to several drawbacks. In this paper, we propose an adjusted empir…
The upper bounds on the coverage probabilities of the confidence regions based on blockwise empirical likelihood [Kitamura (1997)] and nonstandard expansive empirical likelihood [Nordman et al. (2013)] methods for time series data are investigated via studying the probability for the violation of the convex hull constraint. The large sample bounds are derived on the basis of the pivotal limit of the blockwise empirical log-likelihood ratio obtained under the fixed-b asymptotics, which has been recently shown to provide a more accurate approximation to the finite sample distribution than the co…
In Econometrics, imposing restrictions without assuming underlying distributions to modelize complex realities is a valuable methodological tool. However, if a subset of restrictions were not correctly specified, the usual test-statistics for correctly specified models tend to reject erronously a simple null hypothesis. In this setting, we may say that the model suffers from misspecification. We study the behavior of empirical phi-divergence test-statistics, introduced in Balakrishnan et al. (2015), by using the exponential tilted empirical likelihood estimators of Schennach (2007), as a good …
Empirical likelihood is a popular nonparametric statistical tool that does not require any distributional assumptions. In this paper, we explore the possibility of conducting variable selection via Bayesian empirical likelihood. We show theoretically that when the prior distribution satisfies certain mild conditions, the corresponding Bayesian empirical likelihood estimators are posteriorly consistent and variable selection consistent. As special cases, we show the prior of Bayesian empirical likelihood LASSO and SCAD satisfies such conditions and thus can identify the non-zero elements of the…
In this paper, we propose an empirical likelihood-based weighted estimator of regression parameter in quantile regression model with nonignorable missing covariates. The proposed estimator is computationally simple and achieves semiparametric efficiency if the probability of missingness on the fully observed variables is correctly specified. The efficiency gain of the proposed estimator over the complete-case-analysis estimator is quantified theoretically and illustrated via simulation and a real data application.
Public-use survey data are an important source of information for researchers in social science and health studies to build statistical models and make inferences on the target finite population. This paper presents two general inferential tools through the pseudo empirical likelihood and the sample empirical likelihood methods. Theoretical results on point estimation and linear or nonlinear hypothesis tests involving parameters defined through estimating equations are established, and practical issues with the implementation of the proposed methods are discussed. Results from simulation studi…
We investigate a generalized empirical likelihood approach in a two-group setting where the constraints on parameters have a form of U-statistics. In this situation, the summands that consist of the constraints for the empirical likelihood are not independent, and a weight of each summand may not have a direct interpretation as a probability point mass, dissimilar to the common empirical likelihood constraints based on independent summands. We show that the resulting empirical likelihood ratio statistic has a weighted chi-squared distribution in the univariate case and a combination of weighte…
The authors propose a robust semi-parametric empirical likelihood method to integrate all available information from multiple samples with a common center of measurements. Two different sets of estimating equations are used to improve the classical likelihood inference on the measurement center. The proposed method does not require the knowledge of the functional forms of the probability density functions of related populations. The advantages of the proposed method were demonstrated through the extensive simulation studies by comparing mean squared error, coverage probabilities and average le…
This paper proposes a new feature screening method for the multi-response ultrahigh dimensional linear model by empirical likelihood. Through a multivariate moment condition, the empirical likelihood induced ranking statistics can exploit the joint effect among responses, and thus result in a much better performance than the methods considering responses individually. More importantly, by the use of empirical likelihood, the new method adapts to the heterogeneity in the conditional variance of random error. The sure screening property of the newly proposed method is proved with the model size …
Change point analysis has become an important research topic in many fields of applications. Several research work has been carried out to detect changes and its locations in time series data. In this paper, a nonparametric method based on the empirical likelihood is proposed to detect the structural changes of the parameters in autoregressive (AR) models . Under certain conditions, the asymptotic null distribution of the empirical likelihood ratio test statistic is proved to be the extreme value distribution. Further, the consistency of the test statistic has been proved. Simulations have bee…
Objectives: This study provides an effective model selection method based on the empirical likelihood approach for constructing summary receiver operating characteristic (sROC) curves from meta-analyses of diagnostic studies. Methods: We considered models from combinations of family indices and specific pairs of transformations, which cover several widely used methods for bivariate summary of sensitivity and specificity. Then a final model was selected using the proposed empirical likelihood method. Simulation scenarios were conducted based on different number of studies and different populati…
We present simulated standard curves for the calibration of empirical likelihood ratio (ELR) tests of means. With the help of these curves, the nominal significance level of the ELR test can be adjusted in order to achieve (quasi-) exact type I error rate control for a given, finite sample size. By theoretical considerations and by computer simulations, we demonstrate that the adjusted significance level depends most crucially on the skewness and on the kurtosis of the parent distribution. For practical purposes, we tabulate adjusted critical values under several prototypical statistical model…
The celebrated Bernstein von-Mises theorem ensures that credible regions from Bayesian posterior are well-calibrated when the model is correctly-specified, in the frequentist sense that their coverage probabilities tend to the nominal values as data accrue. However, this conventional Bayesian framework is known to lack robustness when the model is misspecified or only partly specified, such as in quantile regression, risk minimization based supervised/unsupervised learning and robust estimation. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a new Bayesian inferential approach that substitutes the (m…
It is well known that the empirical likelihood ratio confidence region suffers finite sample under-coverage issue, and this severely hampers its application in statistical inferences.} The root cause of this under-coverage is an upper limit imposed by the convex hull of the estimating functions that is used in the construction of the profile empirical likelihood. For i.i.d data, various methods have been proposed to solve this issue by modifying the convex hull, but it is not clear how well these methods perform when the data are no longer independent. In this paper, we propose an adjusted blo…
We study an optimization-based approach to construct statistically accurate confidence intervals for simulation performance measures under nonparametric input uncertainty. This approach computes confidence bounds from simulation runs driven by probability weights defined on the data, which are obtained from solving optimization problems under suitably posited averaged divergence constraints. We illustrate how this approach offers benefits in computational efficiency and finite-sample performance compared to the bootstrap and the delta method. While resembling robust optimization, we explain th…
High-dimensional statistical inference with general estimating equations are challenging and remain less explored. In this paper, we study two problems in the area: confidence set estimation for multiple components of the model parameters, and model specifications test. For the first one, we propose to construct a new set of estimating equations such that the impact from estimating the high-dimensional nuisance parameters becomes asymptotically negligible. The new construction enables us to estimate a valid confidence region by empirical likelihood ratio. For the second one, we propose a test …
The practice of employing empirical likelihood (EL) components in place of parametric likelihood functions in the construction of Bayesian-type procedures has been well-addressed in the modern statistical literature. We rigorously derive the EL prior, a Jeffreys-type prior, which asymptotically maximizes the Shannon mutual information between data and the parameters of interest. The focus of our approach is on an integrated Kullback-Leibler distance between the EL-based posterior and prior density functions. The EL prior density is the density function for which the corresponding posterior for…
In this article, we construct semiparametrically efficient estimators of linear functionals of a probability measure in the presence of side information using an easy empirical likelihood approach. We use estimated constraint functions and allow the number of constraints to grow with the sample size. Considered are three cases of information which can be characterized by infinitely many constraints: (1) the marginal distributions are known, (2) the marginals are unknown but identical, and (3) distributional symmetry. An improved spatial depth function is defined and its asymptotic properties a…
We introduce a general hierarchical Bayesian framework that incorporates a flexible nonparametric data model specification through the use of empirical likelihood methodology, which we term semiparametric hierarchical empirical likelihood (SHEL) models. Although general dependence structures can be readily accommodated, we focus on spatial modeling, a relatively underdeveloped area in the empirical likelihood literature. Importantly, the models we develop naturally accommodate spatial association on irregular lattices and irregularly spaced point-referenced data. We illustrate our proposed fra…
It is an important task in the literature to check whether a fitted autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model is adequate, while the currently used tests may suffer from the size distortion problem when the underlying autoregressive models have low persistence. To fill this gap, this paper proposes two empirical likelihood-based portmanteau tests. The first one is naive but can serve as a benchmark, and the second is for the case with infinite variance innovations. The asymptotic distributions under the null hypothesis are derived under mild moment conditions, and their usefulness is demonstr…
We propose an empirical likelihood ratio test for nonparametric model selection, where the competing models may be nested, nonnested, overlapping, misspecified, or correctly specified. It compares the squared prediction errors of models based on the cross-validation and allows for heteroscedasticity of the errors of models. We develop its asymptotic distributions for comparing additive models and varying-coefficient models and extend it to test significance of variables in additive models with massive data. The method is applicable to model selection among supervised learning models. To facili…
Linear mixed-effects models are widely used in analyzing repeated measures data, including clustered and longitudinal data, where inferences of both fixed effects and variance components are of importance. Unlike the fixed effect inference that has been well studied, inference on the variance components is more challenging due to null value being on the boundary and the nuisance parameters of the fixed effects. Existing methods often require strong distributional assumptions on the random effects and random errors. In this paper, we develop empirical likelihood-based methods for the inference …
Conventional likelihood-based information criteria for model selection rely on the distribution assumption of data. However, for complex data that are increasingly available in many scientific fields, the specification of their underlying distribution turns out to be challenging, and the existing criteria may be limited and are not general enough to handle a variety of model selection problems. Here, we propose a robust and consistent model selection criterion based upon the empirical likelihood function which is data-driven. In particular, this framework adopts plug-in estimators that can be …
Covariate adjustment is an important tool in the analysis of randomized clinical trials and observational studies. It can be used to increase efficiency and thus power, and to reduce possible bias. While most statistical tests in randomized clinical trials are nonparametric in nature, approaches for covariate adjustment typically rely on specific regression models, such as the linear model for a continuous outcome, the logistic regression model for a dichotomous outcome and the Cox model for survival time. Several recent efforts have focused on model-free covariate adjustment. This paper makes…
In this paper, we propose a data-adaptive empirical likelihood-based approach for treatment effect estimation and inference, which overcomes the obstacle of the traditional empirical likelihood-based approaches in the high-dimensional setting by adopting penalized regression and machine learning methods to model the covariate-outcome relationship. In particular, we show that our procedure successfully recovers the true variance of Zhang's treatment effect estimator (Zhang, 2018) by utilizing a data-splitting technique. Our proposed estimator is proved to be asymptotically normal and semiparame…
