We establish magnetic improvements upon the classical Hardy inequality for two specific choices of singular magnetic fields. First, we consider the Aharonov-Bohm field in all dimensions and establish a sharp Hardy-type inequality that takes into account both the dimensional as well as the magnetic flux contributions. Second, in the three-dimensional Euclidean space, we derive a non-trivial magnetic Hardy inequality for a magnetic field that vanishes at infinity and diverges along a plane.
We improve the classical discrete Hardy inequality for $ 1<p<\infty $ for functions on the natural numbers. For integer values of $ p $ the Hardy weight is an absolutely monotonic function.
We prove a sharp Hardy-type inequality for the Dirac operator. We exploit this inequality to obtain spectral properties of the Dirac operator perturbed with Hermitian matrix-valued potentials $\mathbf V$ of Coulomb type: we characterise its eigenvalues in terms of the Birman-Schwinger principle and we bound its discrete spectrum from below, showing that the \emph{ground-state energy} is reached if and only if $\mathbf V$ verifies some {rigidity} conditions. In the particular case of an electrostatic potential, these imply that $\mathbf V$ is the Coulomb potential.
We obtain a trace Hardy inequality for the Euclidean space with a bounded cut $Σ\subset\mathbb R^d$, $d \ge 2$. In this novel geometric setting, the Hardy-type inequality non-typically holds also for $d = 2$. The respective Hardy weight is given in terms of the geodesic distance to the boundary of $Σ$. We provide its applications to the heat equation on $\mathbb R^d$ with an insulating cut at $Σ$ and to the Schrödinger operator with a $δ'$-interaction supported on $Σ$. We also obtain generalizations of this trace Hardy inequality for a class of unbounded cuts.
We investigate Hardy-Rellich inequalities for perturbed Laplacians. In particular, we show that a non-trivial angular perturbation of the free operator typically improves the inequality, and may also provide an estimate which does not hold in the free case. The main examples are related to the introduction of a magnetic field: this is a manifestation of the diamagnetic phenomenon, which has been observed by Laptev and Weidl in \cite{LW1999} for the Hardy inequality, later by Evans and Lewis in \cite{EL2005} for the Rellich inequality; however, to the best of our knowledge, the so called Hardy-…
We show that a twist of a three-dimensional tube of uniform cross-section yields an improved decay rate for the heat semigroup associated with the Dirichlet Laplacian in the tube. The proof employs Hardy inequalities for the Dirichlet Laplacian in twisted tubes and the method of self-similar variables and weighted Sobolev spaces for the heat equation.
We consider the Laplacian in a straight strip, subject to a combination of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We show that a switch of the respective boundary conditions leads to a Hardy inequality for the Laplacian. As a byproduct of our method, we obtain a simple proof of a theorem of Dittrich and Kriz.
We study the quadratic form associated to the kinetic energy operator in the presence of an external magnetic field in d = 3. We show that if the radial component of the magnetic field does not vanish identically, then the classical lower bound given by Hardy is improved by a non-negative potential term depending on properties of the magnetic field.
We show that allowing magnetic fields to be complex-valued leads to an improvement in the magnetic Hardy-type inequality due to Laptev and Weidl. The proof is based on the study of momenta on the circle with complex magnetic fields, which is of independent interest in the context of PT-symmetric and quasi-Hermitian quantum mechanics. We study basis properties of the non-self-adjoint momenta and derive closed formulae for the similarity transforms relating them to self-adjoint operators.
We prove a one-dimensional Hardy inequality on the halfline with sharp constant, which improves the classical form of this inequality. As a consequence of this new inequality we can rederive known doubly weighted Hardy inequalities. Our motivation comes from the theory of Schrödinger operators and we explain the use of Hardy inequalities in that context.
The Hardy-Rellich inequality given here generalizes a Hardy inequality of Davies (1984), from the case of the Dirichlet Laplacian of a region $Ω\subseteq\real^N$ to that of the higher order polyharmonic operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The inequality yields some immediate spectral information for the polyharmonic operators and also bounds on the trace of the associated semigroups and resolvents.
The paper deals with natural generalizations of the Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequality and some related questions, such as the optimality and stability of such inequalities, the existence of minimizers of the associated variational problem, and the natural energy space associated with the given functional.
We give a short proof of a recently established Hardy-type inequality due to Keller, Pinchover, and Pogorzelski together with its optimality. Moreover, we identify the remainder term which makes it into an identity.
The paper studies the existence of minimizers for Rayleigh quotients $μ_Ω=\inf\frac{\int_Ω|\nabla u|^2}{\int_ΩV{|u|^2}} $, where $Ω$ is a domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, and $V$ is a nonzero nonnegative function that may have singularities on $\partialΩ$. As a model for our results one can take $Ω$ to be a Lipschitz cone and $V$ to be the Hardy potential $V(x)=\frac{1}{|x|^2} $.
We improve the classical discrete Hardy inequality \begin{equation*}\label{1} \sum _{n=1}^{\infty }a_{n}^{2}\geq \left({\frac {1}{2}}\right)^{2} \sum _{n=1}^{\infty }\left({\frac {a_{1}+a_{2}+\cdots +a_{n}}{n}}\right)^{2}, \end{equation*} where $\{a_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ is any sequence of non-negative real numbers.
In this paper, we prove that the distance function of an open connected set in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ with a $C^{2}$ boundary is superharmonic in the distribution sense if and only if the boundary is {\em weakly mean convex}. We then prove that Hardy inequalities with a sharp constant hold on {weakly mean convex} $C^{2}$ domains. Moreover, we show that the {weakly mean convexity} condition cannot be weakened. We also prove various improved Hardy inequalities on mean convex domains along the line of Brezis-Marcus \cite{BM}.
In this paper we study in detail some spectral properties of the magnetic discrete Laplacian. We identify its form-domain, characterize the absence of essential spectrum and provide the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution.
Some special Hilbert spaces are introduced to present the class of infinitesimal operators with complete minimal non-basis family of eigenvectors. The discrete Hardy inequality plays an important role in the proposed approach. The construction complement the results of G.Q.~Xu et al.~\cite{Xu} (2005) and H.~Zwart~\cite{Zwart} (2010) on the Riesz basis property of eigenvectors (eigenspaces) of infinitesimal operators. Our results are extended to the case of operators on some Banach spaces.
