It is shown that a separable exact residually finite dimensional C*-algebra with locally finitely generated (rational) even K-homology embeds in a uniformly hyperfinite C*-algebra.
We study non-selfadjoint operator algebras that can be entirely understood via their finite-dimensional representations. In contrast with the elementary matricial description of finite-dimensional $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras, in the non-selfadjoint setting we show that an additional level of flexibility must be allowed. Motivated by this peculiarity, we consider a natural non-selfadjoint notion of residual finite-dimensionality. We identify sufficient conditions for the tensor algebra of a $\mathrm{C}^*$-correspondence to enjoy this property. To clarify the connection with the usual self-adjoint n…
Just-infinite C*-algebras, i.e., infinite dimensional C*-algebras, whose proper quotients are finite dimensional, were investigated in [Grigorchuk-Musat-Rordam, 2016]. One particular example of a just-infinite residually finite dimensional AF-algebras was constructed in that article. In this paper we extend that construction by showing that each infinite dimensional metrizable Choquet simplex is affinely homeomorphic to the trace simplex of a just-infinite residually finite dimensional C*-algebras. The trace simplex of any unital residually finite dimensional C*-algebra is hence realized by a …
We show that provided $n\ne 3$, the involutive Hopf *-algebra $A_u(n)$ coacting universally on an $n$-dimensional Hilbert space has enough finite-dimensional representations in the sense that every non-zero element acts non-trivially in some finite-dimensional *-representation. This implies that the discrete quantum group with group algebra $A_u(n)$ is maximal almost periodic (i.e. it embeds in its quantum Bohr compactification), answering a question posed by P. So tan. We also prove analogous results for the involutive Hopf *-algebra $B_u(n)$ coacting universally on an $n$-dimensional Hilbert…
We give a construction of a family of locally finite residually finite groups with just-infinite C*-algebra. This answers a question from [2]. Additionally, we show that residually finite groups of finite exponent are never just-infinite.
We introduce the concept of Rokhlin dimension for actions of residually finite groups on C*-algebras, extending previous notions of Rokhlin dimension for actions of finite groups and the integers, as introduced by Hirshberg, Winter and the third author. If the group has a box space of finite asymptotic dimension, then actions with finite Rokhlin dimension preserve the property of having finite nuclear dimension, when passing to the crossed product C*-algebra. A detailed study of the asymptotic dimension of box spaces shows that finitely generated, virtually nilpotent groups have box spaces wit…
The question of which separable C*-algebras have abelian central sequence algebras was raised and studied by Phillips ([Ph88]) and Ando-Kirchberg ([AK14]). In this paper we give a complete answer to their question: A separable C*-algebra $A$ has abelian central sequence algebra if and only if A satisfies Fell's condition. Moreover, we introduce a higher-dimensional analogue of Fell's condition and show that it completely characterizes subhomogeneity of central sequence algebras. In contrast, we show that any non-trivial extension by compact operators has not only non-abelian but not even resid…
We consider a version of a famous open problem formulated by Kadison, asking whether bounded representations of operator algebras are automatically completely bounded. We investigate this question in the context of amenable operator algebras, and we provide an affirmative answer for representations whose range is residually finite-dimensional. Furthermore, we show that weak-${}^*$ closed, amenable, residually finite-dimensional operator algebras are similar to $C^*$-algebras, and in particular have the property that all their bounded representations are completely bounded. We prove our results…
We prove that pushouts $A*_CB$ of residually finite-dimensional (RFD) $C^*$-algebras over central subalgebras are always residually finite-dimensional provided the fibers $A_p$ and $B_p$, $p\in \mathrm{spec}~C$ are RFD, recovering and generalizing results by Korchagin and Courtney-Shulman. This then allows us to prove that certain central pushouts of amenable groups have RFD group $C^*$-algebras. Along the way, we discuss the problem of when, given a central group embedding $H\le G$, the resulting $C^*$-algebra morphism is a continuous field: this is always the case for amenable $G$ but not in…
By analogy with the well-established notions of just-infinite groups and just-infinite (abstract) algebras, we initiate a systematic study of just-infinite C*-algebras, i.e., infinite dimensional C*-algebras for which all proper quotients are finite dimensional. We give a classification of such C*-algebras in terms of their primitive ideal space that leads to a trichotomy. We show that just-infinite, residually finite dimensional C*-algebras do exist by giving an explicit example of (the Bratteli diagram of) an AF-algebra with these properties. Further, we discuss when C*-algebras and *-algebr…
A non-self-adjoint operator algebra is said to be residually finite dimensional (RFD) if it embeds into a product of matrix algebras. We characterize RFD operator algebras in terms of their matrix state space, and moreover show that an operator algebra is RFD if and only if every representation can be approximated by finite dimensional ones in the point weak operator topology. This is a non-self-adjoint version of a theorem of Exel and Loring for $C^*$-algebras. Moreover, we construct an example of an operator algebra for which approximation in the point strong operator topology is not possibl…
We introduce the $C^*$-algebra $C^*(κ)$ generated by the Koopman representation $κ$ of an étale groupoid $G$ acting on a measure space $(X,μ)$. We prove that for a level transitive self-similar action $(G,E)$ with $E$ finite and $|uE^1|$ constant, there is an invariant measure $ν$ on $X=E^\infty$ and that $C^*(κ)$ is residually finite-dimensional with a normalized self-similar trace. We also discus $p$-fold similarities of Hilbert spaces in connection to representations of the graph algebra $C^*(E)$ and self-similar representations of $G$ in connection to the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $C^*(G,E)$.
The residual finite-dimensionality of a $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra is known to be encoded in a topological property of its space of representations, stating that finite-dimensional representations should be dense therein. We extend this paradigm to general (possibly non-self-adjoint) operator algebras. While numerous subtleties emerge in this greater generality, we exhibit novel tools for constructing finite-dimensional approximations. One such tool is a notion of a residually finite-dimensional coaction of a semigroup on an operator algebra, which allows us to construct finite-dimensional approxi…
We study residually finite-dimensional (or RFD) operator algebras which may not be self-adjoint. An operator algebra may be RFD while simultaneously possessing completely isometric representations whose generating C*-algebra is not RFD. This has provided many hurdles in characterizing residual finite-dimensionality for operator algebras. To better understand the elusive behaviour, we explore the C*-covers of an operator algebra. First, we equate the collection of C*-covers with a complete lattice arising from the spectrum of the maximal C*-cover. This allows us to identify a largest RFD C*-cov…
We work on $\ell_p$ uniform Roe algebras associated to metric spaces, and on their mutual embedding. We generalize results of I. Farah and the authors to mutual embeddings of uniform Roe algebras of operators on $\ell_p$ spaces. Simultaneously, we obtain rigidity results for the classic uniform Roe $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras which depend only on their Banach algebra structure.
In this paper, we study embeddings of uniform Roe algebras. Generally speaking, given metric spaces $X$ and $Y$, we are interested in which large scale geometric properties are stable under embedding of the uniform Roe algebra of $X$ into the uniform Roe algebra of $Y$.
Every $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra, regardless of its density character, can be embedded into the Calkin algebra in a forcing extension of the universe obtained without collapsing any cardinal.
Let $A$ be a separable, unital, simple, $\mathcal{Z}$-stable, nuclear $C^*$-algebra, and let $α\colon G\to \mathrm{Aut}(A)$ be an action of a countable amenable group $G$. If the trace space $T(A)$ is a Bauer simplex and the action of $G$ on $\partial_eT(A)$ has finite orbits and Hausdorff orbit space, we show that $α$ is strongly outer if and only if $α\otimes\mathrm{id}_{\mathcal{Z}}$ has the weak tracial Rokhlin property. If $G$ is moreover residually finite, then these conditions are also equivalent to $α\otimes\mathrm{id}_{\mathcal{Z}}$ having finite Rokhlin dimension (in fact, at most 2)…
