Measurement feedback is a versatile and powerful tool, although its performance is limited by several practical imperfections resulting from classical components. This paper shows that, for some typical quantum feedback control problems for state preparation (stabilization of a qubit or a qutrit, spin squeezing, and Fock state generation), the classical feedback operation can be replaced by a fully quantum one such that the state autonomously dissipates into the target or a state close to the target. The main common feature of the proposed quantum operation, which is called coherent feedback, is that it is composed of a series of dispersive and dissipative couplings inspired by the corresponding measurement feedback scheme.
We propose a class of preparation schemes for orbital angular momentum and polarisation qubits carried by single photons or classical states of light based on coherent feedback control by an ancillary degree of freedom of light. The preparation methods use linear optics and include the transcription of an arbitrary polarisation state onto a two-level OAM system (swap) for arbitrary OAM values plus/minus "l" within a light beam, i.e. without spatial interferometer. The preparations can be carried out with unit efficiency independent from the potentially unknown initial state of the system. More…

As an application of the simultaneous and continuous measurement of noncommutative observables formulated in our previous paper [C. Jiang and G. Watanabe, Phys. Rev. A 102, 062216 (2020)], we propose a scheme to generate the pure ideal quadrature-squeezed state in a one-dimensional harmonic oscillator system by the feedback control based on such type of measurement of noncommutative quadrature observables. We find that, by appropriately setting the strengths of the measurement and the feedback control, the pure ideal quadrature-squeezed state with arbitrary squeezedness can be produced. This i…
Quantum control has been of increasing interest in recent years, e.g. for tasks like state initialization and stabilization. Feedback-based strategies are particularly powerful, but also hard to find, due to the exponentially increased search space. Deep reinforcement learning holds great promise in this regard. It may provide new answers to difficult questions, such as whether nonlinear measurements can compensate for linear, constrained control. Here we show that reinforcement learning can successfully discover such feedback strategies, without prior knowledge. We illustrate this for state p…
We propose and investigate a scheme based on Markovian feedback control that allows for the preparation of single targeted eigenstates of a system of bosonic atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice with high fidelity. It can be used for in-situ cooling the interacting system without particle loss, both for weak and strong interactions, and for experimentally preparing and probing individual excited eigenstates. For that purpose the system is assumed to be probed weakly via homodyne detection of photons that are scattered off-resonantly by the atoms from a structured probe beam into a cavity…

We developed a versatile integrated control and readout instrument for experiments with superconducting quantum bits (qubits), based on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) platform. Using this platform, we perform measurement-based, closed-loop feedback operations with $428 \, \mathrm{ns}$ platform latency. The feedback capability is instrumental in realizing active reset initialization of the qubit into the ground state in a time much shorter than its energy relaxation time $T_1$. We show experimental results demonstrating reset of a fluxonium qubit with $99.4\,\%$ fidelity, using a readou…

We propose and analyze a method for efficient dissipative preparation of matrix product states that exploits their symmetry properties. Specifically, we construct an explicit protocol that makes use of driven-dissipative dynamics to prepare a many-body quantum state that features symmetry-protected topological order and non-trivial edge excitations. The preparation protocol is protected from errors that respect the symmetry, allowing for robust experimental implementation without fine-tuned control. Numerical simulations show that the preparation time scales polynomially in system size $n$. Fu…

Reservoir engineering enables the robust preparation of pure quantum states in noisy environments. We show how a new family of quantum states of a mechanical oscillator can be stabilized in a cavity that is parametrically coupled to both the mechanical displacement and the displacement squared. The cavity is driven with three tones, on the red sideband, on the cavity resonance and on the second blue sideband. The states so stabilized are (squeezed and displaced) superpositions of a finite number of phonons. They show the unique feature of encompassing two prototypes of nonclassicality for boso…
The implementation of a combination of continuous weak measurement and classical feedback provides a powerful tool for controlling the evolution of quantum systems. In this work, we investigate the potential of this approach from three perspectives. First, we consider a double-well system in the classical large-atom-number limit, deriving the exact equations of motion in the presence of feedback. Second, we consider the same system in the limit of small atom number, revealing the effect that quantum fluctuations have on the feedback scheme. Finally, we explore the behavior of modest sized Hubb…

We consider a possible route to ground state cooling of a levitated nanoparticle, magnetically trapped by a strong permanent magnet, using a combination of measurement and feedback. The trap frequency of this system is much lower than those involving trapped ions or nano-mechanical resonators. Minimisation of environmental heating is therefore challenging as it requires control of the system on a timescale comparable to the inverse of the trap frequency. We show that these traps are an excellent platform for performing optimal feedback control via real-time state estimation, for the preparatio…
Quantum information technologies require careful control for generating and preserving a desired target quantum state. The biggest practical obstacle is, of course, decoherence. Therefore, the reachability analysis, which in our scenario aims to estimate the distance between the controlled state under decoherence and the target state, is of great importance to evaluate the realistic performance of those technologies. This paper presents a lower bound of the fidelity-based distance for a general open Markovian quantum system driven by the decoherence process and several types of control includi…

A critical engineering challenge in quantum technology is the accurate control of quantum dynamics. Model-based methods for optimal control have been shown to be highly effective when theory and experiment closely match. Consequently, realizing high-fidelity quantum processes with model-based control requires careful device characterization. In quantum processors based on cold atoms, the Hamiltonian can be well-characterized. For superconducting qubits operating at milli-Kelvin temperatures, the Hamiltonian is not as well-characterized. Unaccounted for physics (i.e., mode discrepancy), coheren…
High fidelity state preparation represents a fundamental challenge in the application of quantum technology. While the majority of optimal control approaches use feedback to improve the controller, the controller itself often does not incorporate explicit state dependence. Here, we present a general framework for training deep feedback networks for open quantum systems with quantum nondemolition measurement that allows a variety of system and control structures that are prohibitive by many other techniques and can in effect react to unmodeled effects through nonlinear filtering. We demonstrate…
