A critical engineering challenge in quantum technology is the accurate control of quantum dynamics. Model-based methods for optimal control have been shown to be highly effective when theory and experiment closely match. Consequently, realizing high-fidelity quantum processes with model-based control requires careful device characterization. In quantum processors based on cold atoms, the Hamiltonian can be well-characterized. For superconducting qubits operating at milli-Kelvin temperatures, the Hamiltonian is not as well-characterized. Unaccounted for physics (i.e., mode discrepancy), coherent disturbances, and increased noise compromise traditional model-based control. This work introduces model predictive control (MPC) for quantum control applications. MPC is a closed-loop optimization framework that (i) inherits a natural degree of disturbance rejection by incorporating measurement feedback, (ii) utilizes finite-horizon model-based optimizations to control complex multi-input, multi-output dynamical systems under state and input constraints, and (iii) is flexible enough to develop synergistically alongside other modern control strategies. We show how MPC can be used to generate practical optimized control sequences in representative examples of quantum state preparation. Specifically, we demonstrate for a qubit, a weakly-anharmonic qubit, and a system undergoing crosstalk, that MPC can realize successful model-based control even when the model is inadequate. These examples showcase why MPC is an important addition to the quantum engineering control suite.
Multiple observers who independently harvest nonclassical correlations from a single physical system share the system's ability to enable quantum correlations. We show that any number of independent observers can share the preparation contextual outcome statistics enabled by state ensembles in quantum theory. Furthermore, we show that even in the presence of any amount of white noise, there exists quantum ensembles that enable such shared preparation contextuality. The findings are experimentally realised by applying sequential unsharp measurements to an optical qubit ensemble which reveals th…
Contextuality is the leading notion of nonclassicality for a single system. However, an experimental demonstration requires finding procedures that are operationally equivalent, which might seem impossible to achieve exactly. Here I focus on the simplest non-trivial case, four preparations and two tomographically complete binary measurements. Exploiting a subtle connection to the CHSH scenario gives eight non-linear inequalities which are together necessary and sufficient for the experimental statistics to admit a preparation noncontextual model in such a scenario. No fixed operational equival…
A non-relativistic system such as an ultracold trapped ion may perform a quantum simulation of a Dirac equation dynamics under specific conditions. The resulting Hamiltonian and dynamics are highly controllable, but the coupling between momentum and internal levels poses some difficulties to manipulate the internal states accurately in wave packets. We use invariants of motion to inverse engineer robust population inversion processes with a homogeneous, time-dependent simulated electric field. This exemplifies the usefulness of inverse-engineering techniques to improve the performance of quant…
We present a technique to control the spatial state of a small cloud of interacting particles at low temperatures with almost perfect fidelity using spatial adiabatic passage. To achieve this, the resonant trap energies of the system are engineered in such a way that a single, well-defined eigenstate connects the initial and desired states and is isolated from the rest of the spectrum. We apply this procedure to the task of separating a well-defined number of particles from an initial cloud and show that it can be implemented in radio-frequency traps using experimentally realistic parameters.

Initialization of composite quantum systems into highly entangled states is usually a must to allow their use for quantum technologies. However, the presence of unavoidable noise in the preparation stage makes the system state mixed, thus limiting the possibility of achieving this goal. Here we address this problem in the context of identical particle systems. We define the entanglement of formation for an arbitrary state of two identical qubits within the operational framework of spatially localized operations and classical communication (sLOCC). We then introduce an entropic measure of spati…
The implementation of static artificial magnetic fields in ultracold atomic systems has become a powerful tool, e.g. for simulating quantum-Hall physics with charge-neutral atoms. Taking an interacting bosonic flux ladder as a minimal model, we investigate protocols for adiabatic state preparation via magnetic flux ramps. Considering the fact that it is actually the artificial vector potential (in the form of Peierls phases) that can be experimentally engineered in optical lattices, rather than the magnetic field, we find that the time required for adiabatic state preparation dramatically depe…
Shortcuts to adiabatic passage for multiparticle in distant cavities: Applications to fast and noise-resistant quantum population transer, entangled states' preparation and transition
Strongly-correlated polaritons in Jaynes-Cummings (JC) lattices can exhibit quantum phase transitions between the Mott-insulating and superfluid phases at integer fillings. The prerequisite to observe such phase transitions is to pump polariton excitations into a JC lattice and prepare them into appropriate ground states. Despite previous efforts, it is still challenging to generate many-body states with high accuracy. Here we present an approach for the robust preparation of many-body ground states of polaritons in finite-sized JC lattices by optimized nonlinear ramping. We apply a Landau-Zen…
We analyze a scheme for preparation of magnetically ordered states of two-component bosonic atoms in optical lattices. We compute the dynamics during adiabatic and optimized time-dependent ramps to produce ground states of effective spin Hamiltonians, and determine the robustness to decoherence for realistic experimental system sizes and timescales. Ramping parameters near a phase transition point in both effective spin-1/2 and spin-1 models produces entangled spin-symmetric states that have potential future applications in quantum enhanced measurement. The preparation of these states and thei…

We propose and analyze a method for efficient dissipative preparation of matrix product states that exploits their symmetry properties. Specifically, we construct an explicit protocol that makes use of driven-dissipative dynamics to prepare a many-body quantum state that features symmetry-protected topological order and non-trivial edge excitations. The preparation protocol is protected from errors that respect the symmetry, allowing for robust experimental implementation without fine-tuned control. Numerical simulations show that the preparation time scales polynomially in system size $n$. Fu…
Accurate and efficient preparation of quantum state is a core issue in building a quantum computer. In this paper, we investigate how to prepare a certain single- or two-qubit target state from arbitrary initial states in semiconductor double quantum dots with the aid of deep reinforcement learning. Our method is based on the training of the network over numerous preparing tasks. The results show that once the network is well trained, it works for any initial states in the continuous Hilbert space. Thus repeated training for new preparation tasks is avoided. Our scheme outperforms the traditio…

Robust quantum computation requires encoding delicate quantum information into degrees of freedom that are hard for the environment to change. Quantum encodings have been demonstrated in many physical systems by observing and correcting storage errors, but applications require not just storing information; we must accurately compute even with faulty operations. The theory of fault-tolerant quantum computing illuminates a way forward by providing a foundation and collection of techniques for limiting the spread of errors. Here we implement one of the smallest quantum codes in a five-qubit super…

In this paper, we propose a protocol to prepare W states with superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID) by using dressed states. Through choosing a set of dressed states suitably, the protocol can be used to accelerate the adiabatic passages while additional couplings are unnecessary. Moreover, we can optimize the evolution of the system with the restraint to the populations of the intermediate states by choosing suitable controlled parameters. Numerical simulations show that the protocol is robust against the parameter variations and decoherence mechanisms. Furthermore, the protoco…
Preparation of quantum state lies at the heart of quantum information processing. The greedy algorithm provides a potential method to effectively prepare quantum states. However, the standard greedy algorithm, in general, cannot take the global maxima and instead becomes stuck on a local maxima. Based on the standard greedy algorithm, in this paper we propose a revised version to design dynamic pulses to realize universal quantum state preparation, i.e., preparing any arbitrary state from another arbitrary one. As applications, we implement this scheme to the universal preparation of single- a…
A key task in quantum computation is the application of a sequence of gates implementing a specific unitary operation. However, the decomposition of an arbitrary unitary operation into simpler quantum gates is a nontrivial problem. Here we propose a general and robust protocol to decompose any target unitary into a sequence of Pauli rotations. The procedure involves identifying a commuting subset of Pauli operators having a high trace overlap with the target unitary, followed by a numerical optimization of their corresponding rotation angles. The protocol is demonstrated by decomposing several…

Preparation of entangled steady states via dissipation and pumping in Rydberg atoms has been recently found to be useful for quantum information processing. The driven-dissipative dynamics is closely related to the natural linewidth of the Rydberg states and can be usually modulated by engineering the thermal reservior. Instead of modifying the effectively radiative decay, we propose an alternatively optimized scheme, which combines the resonant Rydberg antiblockade excitation and the Lyapunov control of the ground states to speed up the prepration of the singlet state for two interacting Rydb…
Reservoir engineering enables the robust preparation of pure quantum states in noisy environments. We show how a new family of quantum states of a mechanical oscillator can be stabilized in a cavity that is parametrically coupled to both the mechanical displacement and the displacement squared. The cavity is driven with three tones, on the red sideband, on the cavity resonance and on the second blue sideband. The states so stabilized are (squeezed and displaced) superpositions of a finite number of phonons. They show the unique feature of encompassing two prototypes of nonclassicality for boso…
