Heterogeneous local plastic deformation of interstitial free steel revealed using in-situ tensile testing and high angular resolution electron backscatter diffraction
Metals are important structural materials for transport and the built environment. Low carbon steels can fail through strain localisation due to the role of interstitial solute atoms (such as carbon and nitrogen) interacting with mobile dislocations, and this gives rise to the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect and the formation of Luders bands. In this work, we use in-situ tensile testing and observation with High Angular Resolution Electron Back Scatter Diffraction (HR-EBSD) to explore deformation patterning in two Interstitial Free (IF) steel samples. One of these steels was heat treated to trigger strain localisation and Luders bands whilst the other was heat treated to homogenise plastic strain and limit flow localisation. Our work reveals that flow localisation at the macroscopic scale is closely correlated with differences in the storage of dislocations at the microscale through analysis of the HR-EBSD derived fields of stored Geometrically Necessary Dislocations (GNDs). Homogeneous plastic flow correlates with more 'Face Centred Cubic (FCC)-like' deformation patterning in these Body Centred Cubic (BCC) materials, where work hardening is correlated with the association of dislocation networks which interact with triple junctions and grain boundaries, and our in-situ tests enable us to see how these fields develop. Our findings enable the modification of steel processing routes, and micromechanical models, based upon information obtained from these in-situ tests.
Interstitials (carbon and nitrogen) are crucial alloying elements for optimizing the mechanical performance of the twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels in terms of the stacking fault energy (SFE). First-principles calculations have been performed to study the effect of interstitial-induced lattice expansion on the SFE. Comparing the predictions with the SFEs measured for alloys containing C and N, our results suggest that the dominant effect of these interstitials on the SFE is due to the lattice expansion effect.
The structure of low-carbon steel after twist extrusion is tested with using electron backscattered diffraction. It has been shown that warm twist extrusion results in grain refinement with conservation of a substantial part of high-angle boundaries, smearing of the texture, more homogeneous distribution of grains and development of the dynamic recrystallization processes.
Recent experimental works reported observation of the ω structure in steel. Here, stability of the ω structure in steel is investigated based on first-principles with special interests in effects of interstitial C atoms. The interstitial C atoms increase the energy of the ω structure compared with the ferromagnetic (FM) BCC. The ω structure incorporating C atoms is also mechanically unstable unless the C concentration is 25 at.%. It is concluded that the ω structure is mostly unstable in steel, and the ω structure in steel may be formed under special atomic constraints at twin boundaries or ot…
ODS steels based on yttrium oxide have been suggested as potential fusion reactor wall materials due to their observed radiation resistance properties. Presumably this radiation resistance can be related to the interaction of the particle with vacancies,self-interstitial atoms (SIAs) and other radiation damage debris. Density functional theory has been used to investigate this at the atomic scale. Four distinct interfaces, some based on HRTEM observations, between iron and yttrium oxide were investigated. It is been shown that the Y$_2$O$_3$-Fe interface acts as a strong trap with long-range a…
Tensile tests were carried out by deforming polycrystalline samples of an interstitial alloy, low carbon steel at room temperature in a wide range of strain rates where the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect was observed. The observed stress time series data were analyzed using the nonlinear dynamical methods. From the analyses, we could establish the presence of marginal deterministic chaos in the PLC effect of the low carbon steel. Moreover, we made a comparative study of the PLC effect of this interstitial alloy with the substitutional Al-Mg alloy which shows that the dynamics of the PLC ef…
Solute decoration at grain boundaries (GB) leads to a number of phenomenon such as changes in interface structure, mobility, cohesion etc.Recent experimental investigations on interfacial segregation in steels are based on microstructural characterisation using two correlative methodologies, namely,Transmission Electron Microscopy-Atom Probe Tomography (APT) and Electron Backscatter Diffraction-APT.Considering the growing interest in this avenue, the present review is aimed at addressing the common adsorption isotherms used for quantifying interfacial segregation and providing an overview of the …
For high (angular) resolution electron backscatter diffraction (HR-EBSD), the selection of a reference diffraction pattern (EBSP0) significantly affects the precision of the calculated strain and rotation maps. This effect was demonstrated in plastically deformed body-centred cubic and face-centred cubic ductile metals (ferrite and austenite grains in duplex stainless steel) and brittle single-crystal silicon, which showed that the effect is not only limited to measurement magnitude but also spatial distribution. An empirical relationship was then identified between the cross-correlation param…
The locally varying tetragonality in martensite grains of a high-carbon steel (1.2 mass percent C) was resolved by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) with a spatial resolution in the order of 100nm. Compared to spatially integrating X-ray diffraction, which yielded an average tetragonality of c/a=1.05, the EBSD measurements in the scanning electron microscope allowed to image a local variation of the lattice parameter ratio c/a in the range of 1.02 $\leq$ c/a $\leq$ 1.07. The local variation of tetragonality is confirmed by two different EBSD data analysis approaches based on the fitting …
We present a comprehensive set of first principles electronic structure calculations to study transition metal solutes and their interactions with point defects in austenite. Clear trends were observed across the series. Solute-defect interactions were strongly correlated to the solute size factors, consistent with local strain field effects. Strong correlations with results in ferrite show insensitivity to the underlying crystal structure in Fe. Oversized solutes act as strong traps for vacancy and self-interstitial defects and as nucleation sites for the development of proto-voids and small …
A novel medium Mn steel of composition Fe-12Mn-4.8Al-2Si-0.32C-0.3V was manufactured with 1.09 GPa yield strength, 1.26 GPa tensile strength and 54% elongation. The thermomechanical process route was designed to be industrially translatable and consists of hot and then warm rolling before a 30 min intercritical anneal. The resulting microstructure comprised of coarse elongated austenite grains in the rolling direction surrounded by necklace layers of fine austenite and ferrite grains. The tensile behaviour was investigated by in-situ neutron diffraction and the evolution of microstructure stud…
Unlike the vast amount of irradiated material data that exists for stainless steel internals from LWRs, with high fast neutron flux and an irradiation temperature of~330oC, the CANDU reactor is unique with a high thermal spectrum stainless steel components peripheral to the core. In particular, the CANDU design contains an austenitic stainless steel calandria vessel, which contains the heavy water moderator at a temperature of 60-80oC. This article explores the effects of low (60-80oC) and moderate (300-360oC) irradiation temperature on irradiation induced defects and defect sinks, both in ter…
Pattern matching between target electron backscatter patterns (EBSPs) and dynamically simulated EBSPs was used to determine the pattern centre (PC) and crystal orientation, using a global optimisation algorithm. Systematic analysis of error and precision with this approach was carried out using dynamically simulated target EBSPs with known PC positions and orientations. Results showed that the error in determining the PC and orientation was < 10$^{-5}$ of pattern width and < 0.01° respectively for the undistorted full resolution images (956x956 pixels). The introduction of noise, optical disto…
Grain boundary wetting as a preliminary stage for zinc induced grain boundary weakening and embrittlement in a Zn coated press hardened 20MnB8 steel was analyzed by means of electron backscatter diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, atom probe tomography and transmission electron microscopy on the nanometer scale. Microcracks at prior austenite grain boundaries were observed and structures that developed after microcrack formation were identified. Zn/Fe intermetallic phases with grain sizes smaller than 100 nm in diameter are present at the crack surfaces …
Various mechanisms have been proposed for hydrogen embrittlement, but the causation of hydrogen-induced material degradation has remained unclear. This work shows hydrogen embrittlement due to phase instability (decomposition). In-situ diffraction measurements revealed metastable hydrides formed in stainless steel, typically declared as a non-hydride forming material. Hydride formation is possible by increasing the hydrogen chemical potential during electrochemical charging and low defect formation energy of hydrogen interstitials. Our findings demonstrate that hydrogen-induced material degrad…
Study of helium diffusion in yttria: A multiscale approach based on the density functional theory and kinetic Monte Carlo, with transmission electron microscopy and thermo-desorption spectroscopy
The well known Warren-Averbach theory of diffraction line profile broadening is shown to be applicable to time of flight data obtained from a neutron spallation source. Without modification, the method is applied to two very different examples; a cold worked ferritic steel and a thermally stressed alumina-30% SiC composite. Values of root mean square strains averaged over a range of lengths for the ferritic steel were used to estimate dislocation densities; values were found to be in good agreement with geometrically necessary dislocation densities independently measured from similarly orienta…
The effect of finish rolling temperature (FRT) on the austenite- () to-bainite () phase transformation is quantitatively investigated in high-strength C-Mn steels. In particular, the present study aims to clarify the respective contributions of the conditioning during the hot rolling and the variant selection (VS) during the phase transformation to the inherited texture. To this end, an alternative crystallographic reconstruction procedure, which can be directly applied to experimental electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) mappings, is developed by combining the best features of the existing…
Emerging hierarchical dislocation structures: Insights from scanning electron microscopy-electron backscatter diffraction in situ tensile testing and multifractal analysis
A 10 wt.% nickel-steel has been developed for high pressures and low-temperature applications, due to its high strength, excellent toughness, and low ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). Under dynamic loading conditions this steel is, however, prone to shear localization that manifests as adiabatic shear bands (ASBs). The temperature increases and thermoplastic microstructural evolution in the ASB are studied in detail, from the macroscopic length scale to the atomic-scale employing correlative electron-backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and at…
Grain boundary segregations were investigated by Atom Probe Tomography in an Al-Mg alloy, a carbon steel and Armco\trademark Fe processed by severe plastic deformation (SPD). In the non-deformed state, the GBs of the aluminium alloy are Mg depleted, but after SPD some local enrichment up to 20 at.% was detected. In the Fe-based alloys, large carbon concentrations were also exhibited along GBs after SPD. These experimental observations are attributed to the specific structure of GBs often described as "non-equilibrum" in ultra fine grained materials processed by SPD. The grain boundary segregat…
We describe a lattice-based crystallographic approximation for the analysis of distorted crystal structures via Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) in the scanning electron microscope. EBSD patterns are closely linked to local lattice parameter ratios via Kikuchi bands that indicate geometrical lattice plane projections. Based on the transformation properties of points and lines in the real projective plane, we can obtain continuous estimations of the local lattice distortion based on projectively transformed Kikuchi diffraction simulations for a reference structure. By quantitative image …
The effect of interstitial hydrogen on the elastic properties of $α$-iron is investigated using \textit{ab initio} density functional theory. We find that while the overall strength properties are reduced by H, the effects are mainly due to the resulting local volume expansion. We use these concentration-dependent elastic moduli to model the effects of homogeneous strain fields on H solubility and make extrapolations to H-solubility in the spatially-varying strain fields of realistic dislocations. We find that H is strongly trapped by dislocations of both the edge and screw variety, leading to…
