Unlike the vast amount of irradiated material data that exists for stainless steel internals from LWRs, with high fast neutron flux and an irradiation temperature of~330oC, the CANDU reactor is unique with a high thermal spectrum stainless steel components peripheral to the core. In particular, the CANDU design contains an austenitic stainless steel calandria vessel, which contains the heavy water moderator at a temperature of 60-80oC. This article explores the effects of low (60-80oC) and moderate (300-360oC) irradiation temperature on irradiation induced defects and defect sinks, both in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties of Grade 304L stainless steel, irradiated with 3 MeV protons. State-of-the-art microscopy has been applied to characterize the irradiation defects, and nano-indentation performed to provide a link with the mechanical properties. It is hypothesized that the interstitial type of loops that develop is highly temperature dependent, and the formation of the defect loops is strongly linked with the amount of radiation induced segregation.
A relative contribution to irradiation hardening caused by dislocation loops and solute-rich precipitates is established for RPV steels of WWER-440 and WWER-1000 reactors, based on TEM measurements and mechanical testing at reactor operating temperature of 563 K. The pinning strength factors evaluated for loops and precipitates are shown to be much lower than those obtained for model alloys based on the room temperature testing as well as those evaluated by means of atomistic simulations in the temperature range of 300 to 600 K. This discrepancy is explained in the framework of a model of ther…
Mn-Ni-Si precipitates (MNSPs) are known to be responsible for irradiation-induced hardening and embrittlement in structural alloys used in nuclear reactors. Studies have shown that precipitation of the MNSPs in 9-Cr ferritic-martensitic (F-M) alloys, such as T91, is strongly associated with heterogeneous nucleation on dislocations, coupled with radiation-induced solute segregation to these sinks. Therefore it is important to develop advanced predictive models for Mn-Ni-Si precipitation in F-M alloys under irradiation based on an understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Here we use a cluster…
Plastic deformation of microsamples is characterised by large intermittent strain bursts caused by dislocation avalanches. Here we investigate how ion irradiation affects this phenomenon during single slip single crystal plasticity. To this end, in situ compression of Zn micropillars oriented for basal slip was carried out in a SEM. The unique experimental setup also allowed the concurrent recording of the acoustic emission (AE) signals emitted from the sample during deformation. It was shown that irradiation introduced a homogeneous distribution of basal dislocation loops that lead to hardeni…
Understanding the mechanisms of plasticity in structural steels is essential for the operation of next-generation fusion reactors. Elemental composition, particularly the amount of Cr present, and irradiation can have separate and synergistic effects on the mechanical properties of ferritic/martensitic steels. The study of ion-irradiated FeCr alloys is useful for gaining a mechanistic understanding of irradiation damage in steels. Previous studies of ion-irradiated FeCr did not clearly distinguish between the nucleation of dislocations to initiate plasticity, and their propagation through the …
Dislocation-assisted phase separation processes in binary systems subjected to irradiation effect are studied analytically and numerically. Irradiation is described by athermal atomic mixing in the form of ballistic flux with spatially correlated stochastic contribution. While studying the dynamics of domain size growth we have shown that the dislocation mechanism of phase decomposition delays the ordering processes. It is found that spatial correlations of the ballistic flux noise cause segregation of dislocation cores in the vicinity of interfaces effectively decreasing the interface width. …
Dislocations can climb out of their glide plane by absorbing (or emitting) point defects (vacancies and self-interstitial atoms (SIAs)). In contrast with conservative glide motion, climb relies on the point defects' thermal diffusion and hence operates on much longer timescales, leading to some forms of creep. Whilst equilibrium point defect concentrations allow dislocations to climb to relieve non-glide stresses, point defect supersaturations also lead to osmotic forces, driving dislocation motion even in the absence of external stresses. Self-interstitial atoms typically have significantly h…
Different techniques of the X-ray Diffraction Line Profile Analysis (XRDLPA) have been used to assess the microstructure of the irradiated Zr-1.0%Nb-1.0%Sn-0.1%Fe alloy. The domain size, microstrain, density of dislocation and the stacking fault probabilities of the irradiated alloy have been estimated as a function of dose by the Williamson-Hall Technique, Modified Rietveld Analysis and the Double Voigt Method. A clear signature in the increase in the density of dislocation with the dose of irradiated was revealed. The analysis also estimated the average density of dislocation in the major sl…
A recently developed reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel MNHS was irradiated with 200keV He ions to a fluence of 1E21ions/m^2 at 450 celsius degree and 1E20ions/m^2 at 300 celsius degree and 450 celsius degree, respectively. The irradiation hardening of the steel was investigated by nanoindentation measurements combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Dispersed barrier-hardening (DBH) model was applied to predict the hardness increments based on TEM analysis. The predicted hardness increments are consistent with the values obtained by nanoindentation tests. It i…
The dynamic processes in the surface layers of metals subjected activity of a pulsing laser irradiation, which destroyed not the crystalline structure in details surveyed. The procedure of calculation of a dislocation density generated in bulk of metal during the relaxation processes and at repeated pulse laser action is presented. The results of evaluations coincide with high accuracy with transmission electron microscopy dates. The dislocation-interstitial mechanism of laser-stimulated mass-transfer in real crystals is presented on the basis of the ideas of the interaction of structure defec…
In this paper, we investigate plasticity in irradiated FeCrAl nanopillars using discrete dislocation dynamics simulations (DDD), with comparisons to transmission electron microscopic (TEM) in situ tensile tests of ion and neutron irradiated commercial FeCrAl alloy C35M. The effects of irradiation-induced defects, such as a/2 111 and a 100 type loops and composition fluctuations representative of phase separation in irradiated FeCrAl alloys, are investigated separately as well as superposed together in simulations. We explore the effects of defects on the stress-strain behavior, specifically yi…
Emerging hierarchical dislocation structures: Insights from scanning electron microscopy-electron backscatter diffraction in situ tensile testing and multifractal analysis
Neutron irradiation progressively changes the properties of zirconium alloys: they harden and their average c/a lattice parameter ratio decreases with fluence. The bombardment by neutrons produces point defects, which evolve into dislocation loops that contribute to a non-uniform growth phenomenon called irradiation-induced growth (IIG). To gain insights into these dislocation loops in Zr we studied them using atomistic simulation. We constructed and relaxed dislocation loops of various types. We find that the energies of <a>-loops on different habit planes are similar, but our results indicat…

The sonoluminescence of ionic semiconductors were studied. The main attention is paid to threshold phenomena which accompany the light irradiation, namely --- point defect creation and nonlinear ultrasound wave attenuation. The model for description of processes under investigation which connects the sonoluminescence excitation with the onset of point defects (vacancies and intersticials) generation by moving under ultrasound action screw dislocation with a jog. The attempt is made to estimate the parameters of crystals which define the jog motion in its cristal relief.
Radiation defects generated in various nuclear materials such as Mo and CeO2, used as a surrogate material for UO2, formed by sub-MeV Xe and Kr ion implantations were studied via TRIM and MD codes. Calculated results were compared with defect distributions in CeO2 crystals obtained from experiments by implantation of these ions at the doses of 1\times10^17 ions/cm2 at several temperatures. A combination of in situ TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) and ex situ TEM experiments on Mo were used to study the evolution of defect clusters during implantation of Xe and Kr ions at energies of 150-…
Defect microstructures formed in ion-irradiated metals, for example iron or tungsten, often exhibit patterns of spatially ordered nano-scale dislocation loops. We show that such ordered dislocation loop structures may form spontaneously as a result of Brownian motion of loops, biased by the angular-dependent elastic interaction between the loops. Patterns of spatially ordered loops form once the local density of loops produced by ion irradiation exceeds a critical threshold value.
Elastic interactions play an important role in controlling irradiation damage evolution, but remain largely unexplored experimentally. Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution on-axis transmission Kikuchi diffraction (HR-TKD), we correlate the evolution of irradiation-induced damage structures and the associated lattice strains in self-ion irradiated pure tungsten. TEM reveals different dislocation loop structures as a function of sample thickness, suggesting that free surfaces limit the formation of extended defect structures found in thicker samples. HR-TKD strain ana…

Thin foils of the double solid solution $(Zr{_0.5},Ti{_0.5})_{2}(Al_{0.5},Sn_{0.5})C$ MAX phase were in situ irradiated in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) up to a fluence of $1.3\times10^{17} ions$ $cm^{-2}$ (${\sim}$ 7.5 dpa), using 6 keV $He^{+}$ ions. Irradiations were performed in the 350-800 °C temperature range. In situ and post-irradiation examination (PIE) by TEM was used to study the evolution of irradiation-induced defects as function of dose and temperature. Spherical He bubbles and string-like arrangements thereof, He platelets, and dislocation loops were observed. Disloca…
It has been shown in experiments that self-climb of prismatic dislocation loops by pipe diffusion plays important roles in their dynamical behaviors, e.g., coarsening of prismatic loops upon annealing, as well as the physical and mechanical properties of materials with irradiation. In this paper, we show that this dislocation dynamics self-climb formulation that we derived in Ref. [1] is able to quantitatively describe the properties of self-climb of prismatic loops that were observed in experiments and atomistic simulations. This dislocation dynamics formulation applies to self-climb by pipe …
Combining spatially resolved X-ray Laue diffraction with atomic-scale simulations, we observe how ion-irradiated tungsten undergoes a series of non-linear structural transformations with increasing irradiation exposure. Nanoscale defect-induced deformations accumulating above 0.02 displacements per atom (dpa) lead to highly fluctuating strains at ~0.1 dpa, collapsing into a driven quasi-steady structural state above ~1 dpa. The driven asymptotic state is characterized by finely dispersed vacancy defects coexisting with an extended dislocation network, and exhibits positive volumetric swelling …
We report a first-principles density functional theory study on the role of grain boundary and dislocation loop in H blistering in W. At low temperature, the {\Sugma}3(111) tilt grain boundary, when combined with a vacancy of vanishing formation energy, can trap up to nine H atoms per (1x1) unit in (111) plane. This amount of H weakens the cohesion across the boundary to an extent that a cleavage along the GB is already exothermic. At high temperature, this effect can be still significant. For an infinitely large dislocation loop in (100) plane, four H can be trapped per (1x1) unit even above …
Density functional theory predicts clusters in the form of the C15 Laves phase to be the most stable cluster of self-interstitials in iron at small sizes. The C15 clusters can form as a result of irradiation, but their prevalence and survival in harsh irradiation conditions have not been thoroughly studied. Using a new bond-order potential optimised for molecular dynamics simulations of radiation damage, we explore the dynamical stability of the C15 clusters in iron under irradiation conditions. We find that small C15 clusters make up 5-20% of the interstitial clusters formed directly in casca…
A stack of titanium foils was irradiated with 136 MeV 136Xe to study microstructure damage and phase stability of titanium upon irradiation. X- ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to study the resulting microstructure damage and phase stability of titanium. We observed the phase transfor- mation of polycrystalline titanium from alpha-Ti (hexagonally closed packed (hcp)) to face centered cubic (fcc) after irradiation with 2.2 x 1015 ions/cm2. Irradiation of Ti with 1.8 x 1014-2.2 x 1015 ions/cm2 resulted in the forma…
Recent experiments on in-situ high-energy self-ion irradiation of tungsten (W) show the occurrence of unusual cascade damage effects resulting from single ion impacts, shedding light on the nature of radiation damage expected in the tungsten components of a fusion reactor. In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of defect production in 150 keV collision cascades in W at atomic resolution, using molecular dynamics simulations and comparing predictions with experimental observations. We show that cascades in W exhibit no subcascade break-up even at high energies, producing a massive, unbroken…
A generalized model to study dislocation loops growth in irradiated binary Zr-based alloys is presented. It takes into account temperature effects, efficiencies of loops to absorb point defects dependent on the loop size, an influence of locality of grain boundary sink strength, and concentration of the alloying element. This model is used to describe the dynamics of loop radii growth in zirconium-niobium alloys under neutron irradiation at reactor conditions. A growth of both loop radii and strains is studied at different grain sizes, location from grain boundaries, and concentration of niobi…
Vacancy swelling of quasicrystals under irradiation is considered. In quasicrystals, the evolution of dislocations is accompanied by the formation of phasons which are localized topological defects of the vacancy and interstitial types. At moderate temperatures the diffusivity of phasons is low which leads to the formation of ring-or disk-shaped phason trails inside dislocation loops. To find the capture efficiency of point defects by a dislocation loop with the complementary ring of phasons the steady-state drift-diffusional problem is solved in the toroidal geometry by the successive overrel…
Pure Fe and model Fe-Cr alloys containing 5, 10 and 14%Cr were irradiated with Fe+ ions at a maximum energy of 2MeV to the same dose of 0.6dpa at temperatures of 300 C, 400 C and 500 C, and at dose rates corresponding to 6 x 10-4 dpa/s and 3 x 10-5 dpa/s. All materials exhibited an increase in hardness after irradiation at 300 C. After irradiation at 400 C, hardening was observed only in Fe-Cr alloys, and not in the pure Fe. After irradiation at 500 C, no hardening was observed in any of the materials tested. For irradiations at both 300 C and 400 C, greater hardening was found in the Fe-Cr al…
In this paper, the Fe-20Ni-25Cr alloy that is used for fuel cladding or pressure vessels with various grain boundaries (GBs) was investigated by employing molecular dynamics simulations. The bi-crystals comprised of Σ3(111), Σ3(112), Σ9(114), Σ11(113), Σ19(116), and Σ17(223) types GBs were considered to systematically examine the interplay between irradiation defects, irradiation microstructure evolution under stress, and irradiation mechanical properties with irradiation intensity, coincidence site lattice parameter, tilt angle, and GB thickness. It is found that irradiated vacancies and inte…
The microstructural parameters like the average domain size, effective domain size at a particular crystallographic direction and microstrain within the domains of titanium and Ti-5%Ta-2%Nb, irradiated with 116 MeV O5+ ion, have been characterized as a function of dose by X-Ray Diffraction Line Profile Analysis using different model based approaches. Dislocation Density and stacking fault probabilities have also been estimated from the analysis. The analysis revealed that there was a significant decrease of the average domain size with dose as compared to the unirradiated sample. The estimated…
Defects formed under irradiation in the bulk act as additional pinning centers resulting in the well-known effect of radiation-induced hardening. On the other hand, there is a poorly understood but well-established effect of instant and reversible softening of metals subjected to various types of irradiation. This radiation-induced softening (RIS) effect should be taken into account both in the theory of radiation effects and in the engineering approach for technological applications. In the present paper, the RIS is investigated experimentally in polycrystalline technically pure iron (0.048%C…
Predicting the dramatic changes in material properties caused by irradiation damage is key for the design of future nuclear fission and fusion reactors. Self-ion implantation is an attractive tool for mimicking the effects of neutron irradiation. However, the damaged layer of implanted samples is only few microns thick, making it difficult to estimate macroscopic properties. Here we address this challenge using a combination of experimental and modelling techniques. We concentrate on self-ion-implanted tungsten, the front-runner for fusion armour components and a prototypical bcc material. To …
(MnNiSi)1-(Fe2Ge)x composition (x=0.34) alloy was prepared by arc melting, crushed, and sieved to approximately <32 microns. They were utilized in examining the possible magnetic and structural changes when exposed to a dosage of a continuous sweeping rate of ~>120 Gy/min and an absorbed dose of 35 kGy of X-ray radiation. This study reports observable trends in X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. Magnetization in the magnetization vs. temperature (both heating and cooling) measurements showed an increase from 2.72 emu/g to 4.01 emu/g in the irradiated sample. The Magnetization vs. mag…
The strength of the lithosphere is typically modelled based on constitutive equations for steady-state flow. However, models of lithospheric flexure reveal differences in lithospheric strength that are difficult to reconcile based on such flow laws. Recent rheological data from low-temperature deformation experiments on olivine suggest that this discrepancy may be largely explained by strain hardening. Details of the mechanical data, specifically the effects of temperature-independent back stresses stored in the samples, indicate that strain hardening in olivine occurs primarily due to long-ra…
