We test a proposed mirror map at the level of correlators for linear models describing the (0,2) moduli space of superconformal field theories with a (2,2) locus associated to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties. We verify in non-trivial examples that the correlators are exchanged by the mirror map and we derive a correspondence between the observables of the A/2- and B/2-twisted theories. We also comment on the global structure of the (0,2) moduli space and present a simple non-renormalization argument for a large class of B/2 model subfamilies.
Mirror maps play an important role in studying supersymmetric gauge theories. In these theories the dynamics is often encoded in an algebraic curve where two sets of periods enjoy the symplectic structure. The A-periods contribute to redefinitions of chemical potentials known as mirror maps. Using the quantization of the $D_5$ del Pezzo geometry, which enjoys the symmetry of the $D_5$ Weyl group, we are able to identify clearly the group-theoretical structure and the multi-covering structure for the mirror map. With the structures, we can apply the mirror map to superconformal Chern-Simons the…
We study the linear sigma model subspace of the moduli space of (0,2) superconformal world-sheet theories obtained by deforming (2,2) theories based on Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in reflexively plain toric varieties. We describe a set of algebraic coordinates on this subspace, formulate a (0,2) generalization of the monomial-divisor mirror map, and show that the map exchanges principal components of singular loci of the mirror half-twisted theories. In non-reflexively plain examples the proposed map yields a mirror isomorphism between subfamilies of linear sigma models.
Calculating the (a,c) ring of the maximal phase orbifold for `invertible' Landau--Ginzburg models, we show that the Berglund--H"ubsch construction works for all potentials of the relevant type. The map that sends a monomial in the original model to a twisted state in the orbifold representation of the mirror is constructed explicitly. Via this map, the OP selection rules of the chiral ring exactly correspond to the twist selection rules for the orbifold. This shows that we indeed arrive at the correct point in moduli space, and that the mirror map can be extended to arbitrary orbifolds, includ…
We present the new explicit geometrical knowledge of the Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds, when a typical type of superpotential is considered. Relying on toric geometry, we show the one-to-one correspondence between some of the $(a,c)$ states with $U(1)$ charges $(-1,1)$ and the $(1,1)$ forms coming from blowing-up processes. Consequently, we find the monomial-divisor mirror map for Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. The possibility of the application of the models of other types is briefly discussed.
We consider topological sigma models with generalized Kahler target spaces. The mirror map is constructed explicitly for a special class of target spaces and the topological A and B model are shown to be mirror pairs in the sense that the observables, the instantons and the anomalies are mapped to each other. We also apply the construction to open topological models and show that A branes are mapped to B branes. Furthermore, we demonstrate a relation between the field strength on the brane and a two-vector on the mirror manifold.
Motivated by a conjecture of Lian and Yau concerning the mirror map in string theory, we determine when the mirror map q-series of certain elliptic curve and K3 surface families are Hauptmoduln (genus zero modular functions). Our geometric criterion for modularity characterizes orbifold uniformization properties of their Picard-Fuchs equations, effectively demystifying the mirror-moonshine phenomenon. A longer, more comprehensive treatment of these results will appear shortly.
Mirror Symmetry, Picard-Fuchs equations and instanton corrected Yukawa couplings are discussed within the framework of toric geometry. It allows to establish mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau spaces for which the mirror manifold had been unavailable in previous constructions. Mirror maps and Yukawa couplings are explicitly given for several examples with two and three moduli.
Understanding the map of line defects in a Quantum Field Theory under a given duality is generically a difficult problem. This paper is the second in a series which aims to address this question in the context of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ mirror symmetry. A general prescription for constructing vortex defects and their mirror maps in quiver gauge theories beyond the $A$-type was presented by the author in an earlier paper [arxiv:2103.01243], where specific examples involving $D$-type and affine $D$-type quivers were discussed. In this paper, we apply the aforementioned prescription to construct a fam…
Kapustin and Witten showed that a twisted version of N=4 gauge theory in four dimensions compactifies to a two-dimensional sigma-model whose target space is the Hitchin moduli space. In this talk, I consider the reduction of the gauge theory on a four dimensional orientable spacetime manifold which is not a global product of two surfaces but contains embedded non-orientable surfaces. The low energy theory is a sigma-model on a two dimensional worldsheet whose boundary components end on branes constructed from the Hitchin moduli space associated to a non-orientable surface. I will also compare …
We consider a class of Calabi-Yau compactifications which are constructed as a complete intersection in weighted projective space. For manifolds with one Kähler modulus we construct the mirror manifolds and calculate the instanton sum.
We compute certain one-loop corrections to F^4 couplings of the heterotic string compactified on T^2, and show that they can be characterized by holomorphic prepotentials. We then discuss how some of these couplings can be obtained in F-theory, or more precisely from 7-brane geometry in type IIB language. We in particular study theories with E_8 x E_8 and SO(8)^4 gauge symmetry, on certain one-dimensional sub-spaces of the moduli space that correspond to constant IIB coupling. For these theories, the relevant geometry can be mapped to Riemann surfaces. Physically, the computations amount to no…
We study mirror symmetry of type II strings on manifolds with the exceptional holonomy groups $G_2$ and Spin(7). Our central result is a construction of mirrors of Spin(7) manifolds realized as generalized connected sums. In parallel to twisted connected sum $G_2$ manifolds, mirrors of such Spin(7) manifolds can be found by applying mirror symmetry to the pair of non-compact manifolds they are glued from. To provide non-trivial checks for such geometric mirror constructions, we give a CFT analysis of mirror maps for Joyce orbifolds in several new instances for both the Spin(7) and the $G_2$ ca…
A method for computing the open string mirror map and superpotential for noncompact Calabi-Yaus, following the physical computations of Lerche and Mayr, is presented. It is also shown that the obvious extension of these techniques to the compact case is not consistent. As an example, the local CP^2 case is worked out in 2 ways.
We use brane configurations and SL(2,Z) symmetry of the type IIB string to construct mirror N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in three dimensions. The mirror map exchanges Higgs and Coulomb branches, Fayet-Iliopoulos and mass parameters and U(1)R symmetries. Some quantities that are determined at the quantum level in one theory are determined at the classical level of the mirror. One such example is the complex structure of the Coulomb branch of one theory which is determined quantum mechanically. It is mapped to the complex structure of the Higgs branch of the mirror theory, which is determin…
Using only the Fukaya category and the monodromy around large complex structure, we reconstruct the mirror map in the case of a symplectic torus. This realizes an idea described by Paul Seidel.
We show that one can express Frobenius transformation on middle-dimensional p-adic cohomology of Calabi-Yau threefold in terms of mirror map and instanton numbers. We express the mirror map in terms of Frobenius transformation on p-adic cohomology . We discuss a $p$-adic interpretation of the conjecture about integrality of Gopakumar-Vafa invariants.
Wilson loops in gauge theories pose a fundamental challenge for dualities. Wilson loops are labeled by a representation of the gauge group and should map under duality to loop operators labeled by the same data, yet generically, dual theories have completely different gauge groups. In this paper we resolve this conundrum for three dimensional mirror symmetry. We show that Wilson loops are exchanged under mirror symmetry with Vortex loop operators, whose microscopic definition in terms of a supersymmetric quantum mechanics coupled to the theory encode in a non-trivial way a representation of th…
We study some arithmetic properties of the mirror maps and the quantum Yukawa coupling for some 1-parameter deformations of Calabi-Yau manifolds. First we use the Schwarzian differential equation, which we derived previously, to characterize the mirror map in each case. For algebraic K3 surfaces, we solve the equation in terms of the $J$-function. By deriving explicit modular relations we prove that some K3 mirror maps are algebraic over the genus zero function field ${\bf Q}(J)$. This leads to a uniform proof that those mirror maps have integral Fourier coefficients. Regarding the maps as Rie…
We extend the discussion of mirror symmetry, Picard-Fuchs equations, instanton-corrected Yukawa couplings, and the topological one-loop partition function to the case of complete intersections with higher-dimensional moduli spaces. We will develop a new method of obtaining the instanton-corrected Yukawa couplings through a close study of the solutions of the Picard-Fuchs equations. This leads to closed formulas for the prepotential for the Kähler moduli fields induced from the ambient space for all complete intersections in non singular weighted projective spaces. As examples we treat part of …
In this paper we conjecture a reformulation of the monomial-divisor mirror map for (2,2) mirror symmetry, valid at a boundary of the moduli space, that is easily extended to also include tangent bundle deformations -- an important step towards understanding (0,2) mirror symmetry. We check our conjecture in a few simple cases, and thereby illustrate how to perform calculations using a description of sheaves recently published by Knutson, Sharpe.
We solved the long-standing problem of describing the cohomology ring of semiample hypersurfaces in complete simplicial toric varieties. Also, the monomial-divisor mirror map is generalized to a map between the whole Picard group and the space of infinitesimal deformations for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. This map is compatible with certain vanishing limiting products of the subrings of the chiral rings, on which the ring structure is related to a product of the roots of $A$-type Lie algebra.
We study the space of vacua of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ theories from a novel approach building on the type IIB brane realization of the theory and in which the insertion of local chiral operators in the path integral is obtained from integrating out light modes in appropriate brane setups. Most of our analysis focuses on abelian quiver theories which can be realized as the low-energy theory of D3-D5-NS5 brane arrays. Their space of vacua contains a Higgs branch, parametrized by the vevs of half-BPS meson operators, and a Coulomb branch, parametrized by the vevs of half-BPS monopole o…
For each family of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties, Batyrev has proposed a possible mirror partner (which is also a family of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces). We explain a natural construction of the isomorphism between certain Hodge groups of these hypersurfaces, as predicted by mirror symmetry, which we call the monomial-divisor mirror map. We indicate how this map can be interpreted as the differential of the expected mirror isomorphism between the moduli spaces of the two Calabi-Yau manifolds. We formulate a very precise conjecture about the form of that mirror isomorphism, which whe…
In this paper, we extend our geometrical derivation of expansion coefficients of mirror maps by localization computation to the case of toric manifolds with two Kähler forms. Especially, we take Hirzebruch surfaces F_{0}, F_{3} and Calabi-Yau hypersurface in weighted projective space P(1,1,2,2,2) as examples. We expect that our results can be easily generalized to arbitrary toric manifold.
Mirror symmetry relates type IIB string theory on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold to type IIA on the mirror CY manifold, whose complex structure and Kaehler moduli spaces are exchanged. We show that the mirror map is a particular case of a more general quantum equivalence, fractional mirror symmetry, between Calabi-Yau compactifications and non-CY ones. As was done by Greene and Plesser for mirror symmetry, we obtain these new dualities by considering orbifolds of Gepner models, of asymmetric nature, leading to superconformal field theories isomorphic to the original ones, but with a different target-spac…
We consider Type II string theories on ${\bf T^n}/{{\bf Z_2}^m}$ Joyce orbifolds. This class contains orbifolds which can be desingularised to give manifolds of $G_2$ $({\bf n}$$=$$7)$ and $Spin(7)$ holonomy $({\bf n}$$=$$8)$. In the $G_2$ holonomy case we present two types of $T$-duality transformation which are clearly generalisations of the $T$-duality/mirror transformation in Calabi-Yau spaces. The first maps Type IIA theory on one such space from this class to Type IIB theory on another such space. The second maps Type IIA (IIB) to Type IIA (IIB). In the case of $Spin(7)$ holonomy we pres…
We revisit the backgrounds of type IIB on manifolds with $SU(4)$-structure and discuss two sets of solutions arising from internal geometries that are complex and symplectic respectively. Both can be realized in terms of generalized complex geometry. We identify a map which relates the complex and symplectic supersymmetric systems. In the semi-flat torus bundle setting this map corresponds to T-duality and suggest a way of extending the mirror transform to non-Kähler geometries.
New geometrical features of the Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds are presented, for models with a typical type of superpotential. We show the one-to-one correspondence between some of the $(a,c)$ states with $U(1)$ charges $(-1,1)$ and the integral points on the dual polyhedra, which are useful tools for the construction of mirror manifolds. Relying on toric geometry, these states are shown to correspond to the $(1,1)$ forms coming from blowing-up processes. In terms of the above identification, it can be checked that the monomial-divisor mirror map for Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds, proposed by the auth…
We provide an explicit twistorial construction of quaternion-Kahler manifolds obtained by deformation of c-map spaces and carrying an isometric action of the modular group SL(2,Z). The deformation is not assumed to preserve any continuous isometry and therefore this construction presents a general framework for describing NS5-brane instanton effects in string compactifications with N=2 supersymmetry. In this context the modular invariant parametrization of twistor lines found in this work yields the complete non-perturbative mirror map between type IIA and type IIB physical fields.
Motivated by understanding M2-branes, we propose to reformulate partition functions of M2-branes by quantum curves. Especially, we focus on the backgrounds of del Pezzo geometries, which enjoy Weyl group symmetries of exceptional algebras. We construct quantum curves explicitly and turn to the analysis of classical phase space areas and quantum mirror maps. We find that the group structure helps in clarifying previous subtleties, such as the shift of the chemical potential in the area and the identification of the overall factor of the spectral operator in the mirror map. We list the multiplic…
We study the integrality properties of the coefficients of the mirror map attached to the generalized hypergeometric function $_{n}F_{n-1}$ with rational parameters and with a maximal unipotent monodromy. We present a conjecture on the $p$-integrality of the mirror map which can be verified experimentally. We prove its consequence on the $N$-integrality of the mirror map for the particular cases $1\leq n\leq 4$. For $n=2$ we obtain the Takeuchi's classification of arithmetic triangle groups with a cusp, and for $n=4$ we prove that $14$ examples of hypergeometric Calabi-Yau equations are the fu…
We study SYZ mirror symmetry in the context of non-Kaehler Calabi-Yau manifolds. In particular, we study the six-dimensional Type II supersymmetric $SU(3)$ systems with Ramond-Ramond fluxes, and generalize them to higher dimensions. We show that Fourier-Mukai transform provides the mirror map between these Type IIA and Type IIB supersymmetric systems in the semi-flat setting. This is concretely exhibited by nilmanifolds.
In this paper we consider the total space of the canonical bundle of P^2 and we use a proposal by Hosono, together with results in Seidel and Auroux-Katzarkov-Orlov, to deduce the right physical mirror equivalence between D^b(K_{P^2}) and the derived Fukaya category of its mirror. By construction, our equivalence is compatible with the mirror map between moduli spaces and with the computation of Gromov--Witten invariants.
