Lattice spin models in statistical physics are used to understand magnetism. Their Hamiltonians are a discrete form of a version of a Dirichlet energy, signifying a relationship to the Harmonic map heat flow equation. The Gibbs distribution, defined with this Hamiltonian, is used in the Metropolis-Hastings (M-H) algorithm to generate dynamics tending towards an equilibrium state. In the limiting situation when the inverse temperature is large, we establish the relationship between the discrete M-H dynamics and the continuous Harmonic map heat flow associated with the Hamiltonian. We show the convergence of the M-H dynamics to the Harmonic map heat flow equation in two steps: First, with fixed lattice size and proper choice of proposal size in one M-H step, the M-H dynamics acts as gradient descent and will be shown to converge to a system of Langevin stochastic differential equations (SDE). Second, with proper scaling of the inverse temperature in the Gibbs distribution and taking the lattice size to infinity, it will be shown that this SDE system converges to the deterministic Harmonic map heat flow equation. Our results are not unexpected, but show remarkable connections between the M-H steps and the SDE Stratonovich formulation, as well as reveal trajectory-wise out of equilibrium dynamics to be related to a canonical PDE system with geometric constraints.
We demonstrate the convergence of the characteristic polynomial of several random matrix ensembles to a limiting universal function, at the microscopic scale. The random matrix ensembles we treat are classical compact groups and the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. In fact, the result is the by-product of a general limit theorem for the convergence of random entire functions whose zeros present a simple regularity property.
We introduce a new family of $N\times N$ random real symmetric matrix ensembles, the $k$-checkerboard matrices, whose limiting spectral measure has two components which can be determined explicitly. All but $k$ eigenvalues are in the bulk, and their behavior, appropriately normalized, converges to the semi-circle as $N\to\infty$; the remaining $k$ are tightly constrained near $N/k$ and their distribution converges to the $k \times k$ hollow GOE ensemble (this is the density arising by modifying the GOE ensemble by forcing all entries on the main diagonal to be zero). Similar results hold for c…
Given an ensemble of NxN random matrices, a natural question to ask is whether or not the empirical spectral measures of typical matrices converge to a limiting spectral measure as N --> oo. While this has been proved for many thin patterned ensembles sitting inside all real symmetric matrices, frequently there is no nice closed form expression for the limiting measure. Further, current theorems provide few pictures of transitions between ensembles. We consider the ensemble of symmetric m-block circulant matrices with entries i.i.d.r.v. These matrices have toroidal diagonals periodic of period…
Hamilton variational principle for special type of statistical ensemble of deterministic dynamical systems is derived. Thie form of variational principle allows one to describe the statistical ensemble in terms of wave functions and provides a basis for a description of statistical ensemble of stochastic systems. It is shown that sometimes such a statistical description of stochastic particle motion appears to coincide with the quantum description in terms of Schroedinger equation.
We introduce a new matrix operation on a pair of matrices, $\text{swirl}(A,X),$ and discuss its implications on the limiting spectral distribution. In a special case, the resultant ensemble converges almost surely to the Rayleigh distribution. In proving this, we provide a novel combinatorial proof that the random matrix ensemble of circulant Hankel matrices converges almost surely to the Rayleigh distribution, using the method of moments.
This paper is concerned with the explicit computation of the limiting distribution function of the largest real eigenvalue in the real Ginibre ensemble when each real eigenvalue has been removed independently with constant likelihood. We show that the recently discovered integrable structures in \cite{BB} generalize from the real Ginibre ensemble to its thinned equivalent. Concretely, we express the aforementioned limiting distribution function as a convex combination of two simple Fredholm determinants and connect the same function to the inverse scattering theory of the Zakharov-Shabat syste…
We consider the symplectic induced Ginibre process, which is a Pfaffian point process on the plane. Let $N$ be the number of points. We focus on the almost-circular regime where most of the points lie in a thin annulus $\mathcal{S}_{N}$ of width $O(\frac{1}{N})$ as $N \to \infty$. Our main results are the scaling limits of all correlation functions near the real axis, and also away from the real axis. Near the real axis, the limiting correlation functions are Pfaffians with a new correlation kernel, which interpolates the limiting kernels in the bulk of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble and of t…
We derive the limiting matrix kernels for the the Gaussian Orthogonal and Symplectic ensembles scaled at the edge, with proofs of convergence in the operator norms that assure convergence of the determinants.
For general $β\geq 1$, we consider Dyson Brownian motion at equilibrium and prove convergence of the extremal particles to an ensemble of continuous sample paths in the limit $N \to \infty$. For each fixed time, this ensemble is distributed as the Airy$_β$ random point field. We prove that the increments of the limiting process are locally Brownian. When $β>1$ we prove that after subtracting a Brownian motion, the sample paths are almost surely locally $r$-H{ö}lder for any $r<1-(1+β)^{-1}$. Furthermore for all $β\geq 1$ we show that the limiting process solves an SDE in a weak sense. When $β=2…
We consider various asymptotic scaling limits $N\to\infty$ for the $2N$ complex eigenvalues of non-Hermitian random matrices in the symmetry class of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble. These are known to be integrable, forming Pfaffian point processes, and we obtain limiting expressions for the corresponding kernel for different potentials. The first part is devoted to the symplectic Ginibre ensemble with the Gaussian potential. We obtain the asymptotic at the edge of the spectrum in the vicinity of the real line. The unifying form of the kernel allows us to make contact with the bulk scaling al…

We determine the limiting distribution of the largest eigenvalue of products from the $β$-Laguerre ensemble. This limiting distribution is given by a Tracy-Widom law with parameter $β_0>0$ depending on the ratio of the parameters of the two matrices involved.
We access the edge of Gaussian beta ensembles with one spike by analyzing high powers of the associated tridiagonal matrix models. In the classical cases beta=1, 2, 4, this corresponds to studying the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalues of additive rank one perturbations of the GOE/GUE/GSE random matrices. In the infinite-dimensional limit, we arrive at a one-parameter family of random Feynman-Kac type semigroups, which features the stochastic Airy semigroup of Gorin and Shkolnikov [13] as an extreme case. Our analysis also provides Feynman-Kac formulas for the spiked stochastic Airy opera…

The distributions of $ N $-particle systems of Gaussian unitary ensembles converge to Sine$_2$ point processes under bulk-scaling limits. These scalings are parameterized by a macro-position $ θ$ in the support of the semicircle distribution. The limits are always Sine$_{2}$ point processes and independent of the macro-position $ θ$ up to the dilations of determinantal kernels. We prove a dynamical counter part of this fact. We prove that the solution of the $ N $-particle systems given by stochastic differential equations (SDEs) converges to the solution of the infinite-dimensional Dyson mode…
The real Ginibre ensemble consists of $n\times n$ real matrices ${\bf X}$ whose entries are i.i.d. standard normal random variables. In sharp contrast to the complex and quaternion Ginibre ensemble, real eigenvalues in the real Ginibre ensemble attain positive likelihood. In turn, the spectral radius $R_n=\max_{1\leq j\leq n}|z_j({\bf X})|$ of the eigenvalues $z_j({\bf X})\in\mathbb{C}$ of a real Ginibre matrix ${\bf X}$ follows a different limiting law (as $n\rightarrow\infty$) for $z_j({\bf X})\in\mathbb{R}$ than for $z_j({\bf X})\in\mathbb{C}\setminus\mathbb{R}$. Building on previous work b…
We study limiting distribution of pair counting statistics of the form $ \sum_{1\leq i\neq j\leq N} f(L_N\*(θ_i-θ_j))$ for the circular $β$-ensemble (C$β$E) of random matrices for sufficiently smooth test function $f$ and $L_N=O(N).$ For $β=2$ and $L_N=N$ our results are inspired by a classical result of Montgomery on pair correlation of zeros of Riemann zeta function.
We prove that the largest eigenvalues of the beta ensembles of random matrix theory converge in distribution to the low-lying eigenvalues of the random Schroedinger operator -d^2/dx^2 + x + (2/beta^{1/2}) b_x' restricted to the positive half-line, where b_x' is white noise. In doing so we extend the definition of the Tracy-Widom(beta) distributions to all beta>0, and also analyze their tails. Last, in a parallel development, we provide a second characterization of these laws in terms of a one-dimensional diffusion. The proofs rely on the associated tridiagonal matrix models and a universality …
The spiked model is an important special case of the Wishart ensemble, and a natural generalization of the white Wishart ensemble. Mathematically, it can be defined on three kinds of variables: the real, the complex and the quaternion. For practical application, we are interested in the limiting distribution of the largest sample eigenvalue. We first give a new proof of the result of Baik, Ben Arous and Péché for the complex spiked model, based on the method of multiple orthogonal polynomials by Bleher and Kuijlaars. Then in the same spirit we present a new result of the rank 1 quaternionic sp…
We consider the ASEP and the stochastic six vertex model started with step initial data. After a long time, $T$, it is known that the one-point height function fluctuations for these systems are of order $T^{1/3}$. We prove the KPZ prediction of $T^{2/3}$ scaling in space. Namely, we prove tightness (and Brownian absolute continuity of all subsequential limits) as $T$ goes to infinity of the height function with spatial coordinate scaled by $T^{2/3}$ and fluctuations scaled by $T^{1/3}$. The starting point for proving these results is a connection discovered recently by Borodin-Bufetov-Wheeler…
We discuss the limiting spectral density of real symmetric random matrices. Other than in standard random matrix theory the upper diagonal entries are not assumed to be independent, but we will fill them with the entries of a stochastic process. Under assumptions on this process, which are satisfied, e.g., by stationary Markov chains on finite sets, by stationary Gibbs measures on finite state spaces, or by Gaussian Markov processes, we show that the limiting spectral distribution depends on the way the matrix is filled with the stochastic process. If the filling is in a certain way compatible…
Large-time behaviour of solutions to stochastic evolution equations driven by two-sided regular Volterra processes is studied. The solution is understood in the mild sense and takes values in a separable Hilbert space. Sufficient conditions for the existence of limiting measure and strict stationarity of the solution process are found and an example for which these conditions are also necessary is provided. The results are further applied to the heat equation driven by the two-sided Rosenblatt process.
The focus of this paper is on the distribution function of the rightmost eigenvalue for the complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble in the limit of weak non-Hermiticity. We show how the limiting distribution function can be expressed in terms of an integro-differential Painlevé-II function and how the same captures the non-trivial transition between Poisson and Airy point process extreme value statistics as the degree of non-Hermiticity decreases. Our most explicit new results concern the tail asymptotics of the limiting distribution function. For the right tail we compute the leading order asymptot…
The limiting behavior of stochastic evolution processes with small noise intensity $ε$ is investigated in distribution-based approach. Let $μ^ε$ be stationary measure for stochastic process $X^ε$ with small $ε$ and $X^{0}$ be a semiflow on a Polish space. Assume that $\{μ^ε: 0<ε\leqε_0\}$ is tight. Then all their limits in weak sense are $X^0-$invariant and their supports are contained in Birkhoff center of $X^0$. Applications are made to various stochastic evolution systems, including stochastic ordinary differential equations, stochastic partial differential equations, stochastic functional …
We studied the universality of Wishart ensembles whose covariance matrix has 2 distinct eigenvalues. We studied the asymptotic limit when the number of both eigenvalues goes to infinity and obtained universality results. In this case, the limiting eigenvalue distribution can be supported on 1 or 2 disjoint intervals. We obtained a necessary and sufficient condition on the parameters such that the limiting distribution is supported on 2 disjoint intervals and have computed the eigenvalue density in the limit. Furthermore, by using Riemann-Hilbert analysis, we have shown that under proper rescal…
We present collective dynamics of the Cucker-Smale (C-S) ensemble under random communications. As an effective modeling of the C-S ensemble, we introduce a stochastic kinetic C-S equation with a multiplicative white noise. For the proposed stochastic kinetic model with a multiplicative noise, we present a global well-posedness of strong solutions and their asymptotic flocking dynamics, when initial datum is sufficiently regular, and communication weight function has a positive lower bound.
Random matrix theory successfully models many systems, from the energy levels of heavy nuclei to zeros of $L$-functions. While most ensembles studied have continuous spectral distribution, Burkhardt et al introduced the ensemble of $k$-checkerboard matrices, a variation of Wigner matrices with entries in generalized checkerboard patterns fixed and constant. In this family, $N-k$ of the eigenvalues are of size $O(\sqrt{N})$ and were called bulk while the rest are tightly contrained around a multiple of $N$ and were called blip. We extend their work by allowing the fixed entries to take differen…
We study the line ensembles of non-crossing Brownian bridges above a hard wall, each tilted by the area of the region below it with geometrically growing pre-factors. This model, which mimics the level lines of the $(2+1)$D SOS model above a hard wall, was studied in two works from 2019 by Caputo, Ioffe and Wachtel. In those works, the tightness of the law of the top $k$ paths, for any fixed $k$, was established under either zero or free boundary conditions, which in the former setting implied the existence of a limit via a monotonicity argument. Here we address the open problem of a limit und…
Consider the ensembles of real symmetric Toeplitz matrices and real symmetric Hankel matrices whose entries are i.i.d. random variables chosen from a fixed probability distribution p of mean 0, variance 1, and finite higher moments. Previous work on real symmetric Toeplitz matrices shows that the spectral measures, or densities of normalized eigenvalues, converge almost surely to a universal near-Gaussian distribution, while previous work on real symmetric Hankel matrices shows that the spectral measures converge almost surely to a universal non-unimodal distribution. Real symmetric Toeplitz m…
A scheme for stabilizing stochastic approximation iterates by adaptively scaling the step sizes is proposed and analyzed. This scheme leads to the same limiting differential equation as the original scheme and therefore has the same limiting behavior, while avoiding the difficulties associated with projection schemes. The proof technique requires only that the limiting o.d.e. descend a certain Lyapunov function outside an arbitrarily large bounded set.
In the classical $β$-ensembles of random matrix theory, setting $β= 2 α/N$ and taking the $N \to \infty$ limit gives a statistical state depending on $α$. Using the loop equations for the classical $β$-ensembles, we study the corresponding eigenvalue density, its moments, covariances of monomial linear statistics, and the moments of the leading $1/N$ correction to the density. From earlier literature the limiting eigenvalue density is known to be related to classical functions. Our study gives a unifying mechanism underlying this fact, identifying in particular the Gauss hypergeometric differe…
We study the limiting distribution of the eigenvalues of the Ginibre ensemble conditioned on the event that a certain proportion lie in a given region of the complex plane. Using an equivalent formulation as an obstacle problem, we describe the optimal distribution and some of its monotonicity properties.
In this paper, we study stochastic homogenization of a coupled diffusion-reaction system. The diffusion-reaction system is coupled to stochastic differential equations, which govern the changes in the media properties. Though homogenization with changing media properties has been studied in previous findings, there is little research on homogenization when the media properties change due to stochastic differential equations. Such processes occur in many applications, where the changes in media properties are due to particle deposition. In the paper, we investigate the well-posedness of the non…
We study the limiting occupation density process for a large number of critical and driftless branching random walks. We show that the rescaled occupation densities of $\lfloor sN\rfloor$ branching random walks, viewed as a function-valued, increasing process $\{g_{s}^{N}\}_{s\ge 0}$, converges weakly to a pure jump process in the Skorohod space $\mathbb D([0, +\infty), \mathcal C_{0}(\mathbb R))$, as $N\to\infty$. Moreover, the jumps of the limiting process consist of i.i.d. copies of an Integrated super-Brownian Excursion (ISE) density, rescaled and weighted by the jump sizes in a real-value…
Assessing whether a given network is typical or atypical for a random-network ensemble (i.e., network-ensemble comparison) has widespread applications ranging from null-model selection and hypothesis testing to clustering and classifying networks. We develop a framework for network-ensemble comparison by subjecting the network to stochastic rewiring. We study two rewiring processes, uniform and degree-preserved rewiring, which yield random-network ensembles that converge to the Erdos-Renyi and configuration-model ensembles, respectively. We study convergence through von Neumann entropy (VNE), …
The existence of a (partial) market equilibrium price is proved in a complete, continuous time finite-agent market setting. The economic agents act as price takers in a fully competitive setting and maximize exponential utility from terminal wealth. As the number $N$ of economic agents goes to infinity, the BSDE system of $N$ equations characterizing the equilibrium asset price dynamics decouples. Due to the system's symmetry, the influence of the mean field of the agents, conditionally on the common noise, becomes deterministic.
We studied universality of Wishart ensembles whose covariance matrix has 2 distinct eigenvalues and the number of each of these eigenvalue goes to infinity in the asymptotic limit. In this case, the limiting eigenvalue distribution can be supported on 1 or 2 disjoint intervals. In our previous work the case when the support consists of 2 intervals was studied. This paper complements our previous analysis and studied the case when the support consists of a single interval. By using Riemann-Hilbert analysis, we have shown that under proper rescaling of the eigenvalues, the limiting correlation k…
The limiting distribution of eigenvalues of N x N random matrices has many applications. One of the most studied ensembles are real symmetric matrices with independent entries iidrv; the limiting rescaled spectral measure (LRSM) $\widetildeμ$ is the semi-circle. Studies have determined the LRSMs for many structured ensembles, such as Toeplitz and circulant matrices. These have very different behavior; the LRSM for both have unbounded support. Given a structured ensemble such that (i) each random variable occurs o(N) times in each row and (ii) the LRSM exists, we introduce a parameter to contin…
By using the independence structure of points following a determinantal point process, we study the radii of the spherical ensemble, the truncation of the circular unitary ensemble and the product ensemble with parameter n and k. The limiting distributions of the three radii are obtained. They are not the Tracy-Widom distribution. In particular, for the product ensemble, we show that the limiting distribution has a transition phenomenon: when k/n -> 0, k/n -> a in (0,infty) and k/n -> infty, the liming distribution is the Gumbel distribution, a new distribution $μ$ and the logarithmic normal d…
Random Matrix Theory (RMT) has successfully modeled diverse systems, from energy levels of heavy nuclei to zeros of $L$-functions; this correspondence has allowed RMT to successfully predict many number theoretic behaviors. However there are some operations which to date have no RMT analogue. Our motivation is to find an RMT analogue of Rankin-Selberg convolution, which constructs a new $L$-functions from an input pair. We report one such attempt; while it does not appear to model convolution, it does create new ensembles with properties hybridizing those of its constituents. For definiteness …
The paper describes the global limiting behavior of Gaussian beta ensembles where the parameter $β$ is allowed to vary with the matrix size $n$. In particular, we show that as $n \to \infty$ with $nβ\to \infty$, the empirical distribution converges weakly to the semicircle distribution, almost surely. The Gaussian fluctuation around the limit is then derived by a martingale approach.
We prove an operator level limit for the circular Jacobi $β$-ensemble. As a result, we characterize the counting function of the limit point process via coupled systems of stochastic differential equations. We also show that the normalized characteristic polynomials converge to a random analytic function, which we characterize via the joint distribution of its Taylor coefficients at zero and as the solution of a stochastic differential equation system. We also provide analogous results for the real orthogonal $β$-ensemble.
We study the limiting behavior of Gaussian beta ensembles in the regime where $βn = const$ as $n \to \infty$. The results are (1) Gaussian fluctuations for linear statistics of the eigenvalues, and (2) Poisson convergence of the bulk statistics. (2) is an alternative proof of the result by F.~Benaych-Georges and S.~Péché (2015) with the explicit form of the intensity measure.
We consider the convergence of the eigenvalues to the support of the equilibrium measure in the $β$ ensemble models under a critical condition. We show a phase transition phenomenon, namely that, with probability one, all eigenvalues will fall in the support of the limiting spectral measure when $β>1$, whereas this fails when $β<1$.
We consider a multivariate heavy-tailed stochastic volatility model and analyze the large-sample behavior of its sample covariance matrix. We study the limiting behavior of its entries in the infinite-variance case and derive results for the ordered eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors. Essentially, we consider two different cases where the tail behavior either stems from the i.i.d. innovations of the process or from its volatility sequence. In both cases, we make use of a large deviations technique for regularly varying time series to derive multivariate $α$-stable limit distributions o…
This paper is devoted to provide a theoretical underpinning for ensemble forecasting with rapid fluctuations in body forcing and in boundary conditions. Ensemble averaging principles are proved under suitable `mixing' conditions on random boundary conditions and on random body forcing. The ensemble averaged model is a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation, with the deviation process (i.e., the approximation error process) quantified as the solution of a linear stochastic partial differential equation.
We introduce and study a notion of Asymptotic Preserving schemes, related to convergence in distribution, for a class of slow-fast Stochastic Differential Equations. In some examples, crude schemes fail to capture the correct limiting equation resulting from averaging and diffusion approximation procedures. We propose examples of Asymptotic Preserving schemes: when the time-scale separation vanishes, one obtains a limiting scheme, which is shown to be consistent in distribution with the limiting Stochastic Differential Equation. Numerical experiments illustrate the importance of the proposed A…
