A scheme for stabilizing stochastic approximation iterates by adaptively scaling the step sizes is proposed and analyzed. This scheme leads to the same limiting differential equation as the original scheme and therefore has the same limiting behavior, while avoiding the difficulties associated with projection schemes. The proof technique requires only that the limiting o.d.e. descend a certain Lyapunov function outside an arbitrarily large bounded set.
The authors consider stochastic aspects of the stabilization problem for two and three-dimensional Oseen equations with help of feedback control defined on a part of the fluid boundary. Stochastic issues arise when inevitable unpredictable fluctuations in numerical realization of stabilization procedures are taken into account and they are supposed to be independent identically distributed random variables. Under this assumption the solution to the stabilization problem obtained via boundary feedback control can be described by a Markov chain or a discrete random dynamical system. It is shown …
We focus in this paper on the stochastic stabilization problems of PDEs by Levy noise. Sufficient conditions under which the perturbed systems decay exponentially with a general rate function are provided and some examples are constructed to demonstrate the applications of our theory.
In this paper, we study the stability of solutions of stochastic McKean-Vlasov equations (SMVEs) via feedback control based on discrete-time state observation. By using a specific Lyapunov function, the $H_{\infty}$ stability, asymptotic stability and exponential stability in mean square for the solution of the controlled systems are obtained. Since the distribution of solution is difficult to be observed, we study the corresponding particle system which can be observed for the feedback control. We prove that the exponential stability of control system is equivalent to the the exponential stab…
We consider a 2-dimensional stochastic differential equation in polar coordinates depending on several parameters. We show that if these parameters belong to a specific regime then the deterministic system explodes in finite time, but the random dynamical system corresponding to the stochastic equation is not only strongly complete but even admits a random attractor.
An optimal control for a dynamical system optimizes a certain objective function. Here we consider the construction of an optimal control for a stochastic dynamical system with a random structure, Poisson perturbations and random jumps, which makes the system stable in probability. Sufficient conditions of the stability in probability are obtained, using the second Lyapunov method, in which the construction of the corresponding functions plays an important role. Here we provide a solution to the problem of optimal stabilization in a general case. For a linear system with a quadratic quality fu…
In this article we establish central limit theorems for multilevel Polyak-Ruppert averaged stochastic approximation schemes. We work under very mild technical assumptions and consider the slow regime in wich typical errors decay like $N^{-δ}$ with $δ\in(0,\frac 12)$ and the critical regime in which errors decay of order $N^{-1/2}\sqrt{\log N}$ in the runtime $N$ of the algorithm.
In this article we present and analyse new multilevel adaptations of stochastic approximation algorithms for the computation of a zero of a function $f\colon D \to \mathbb R^d$ defined on a convex domain $D\subset \mathbb R^d$, which is given as a parameterised family of expectations. Our approach is universal in the sense that having multilevel implementations for a particular application at hand it is straightforward to implement the corresponding stochastic approximation algorithm. Moreover, previous research on multilevel Monte Carlo can be incorporated in a natural way. This is due to the…
We present new Poisson process approximation results for stabilizing functionals of Poisson and binomial point processes. These functionals are allowed to have an unbounded range of interaction and encompass many examples in stochastic geometry. Our bounds are derived for the Kantorovich-Rubinstein distance using the generator approach to Stein's method. We give different types of bounds for different point processes. While some of our bounds are given in terms of coupling of the point process with its Palm version, the others are in terms of the local dependence structure formalized via the n…
The problem of partial stabilization for nonlinear control systems described by the Ito stochastic differential equations is considered. For these systems, we propose a constructive control design method which leads to establishing the asymptotic stability in probability of the trivial solution of the closed-loop system with respect to a part of state variables. Mechanical examples are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the obtained controllers.
We show that the complex-valued ODE \begin{equation*} \dot z_t = a_{n+1} z^{n+1} + a_n z^n+\cdots+a_0, \end{equation*} which necessarily has trajectories along which the dynamics blows up in finite time, can be stabilized by the addition of an arbitrarily small elliptic, additive Brownian stochastic term. We also show that the stochastic perturbation has a unique invariant measure which is heavy-tailed yet is uniformly, exponentially attracting. The methods turn on the construction of Lyapunov functions. The techniques used in the construction are general and can likely be used in other settin…
In this paper, we consider N-level quantum angular momentum systems interacting with electromagnetic fields undergoing continuous-time measurements. We suppose unawareness of the initial state and physical parameters, entailing the introduction of an additional state representing the estimated quantum state. The evolution of the quantum state and its estimation is described by a coupled stochastic master equation. Here, we study the asymptotic behavior of such a system in presence of a feedback controller. We provide sufficient conditions on the feedback controller and on the estimated paramet…
A multiresolution analysis for solving stochastic conservation laws is proposed. Using a novel adaptation strategy and a higher dimensional deterministic problem, a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) solver is derived. A multiresolution analysis of the DG spaces for the proposed adaptation strategy is presented. Numerical results show that in the case of general stochastic distributions the performance of the DG solver is significantly improved by the novel adaptive strategy. The gain in efficiency is validated in computational experiments.
We present a model for the dynamics of a population of bacteria with a continuum of traits, who compete for resources and exchange horizontally (transfer) an otherwise vertically inherited trait with possible mutations. Competition influences individual demographics, affecting population size, which feeds back on the dynamics of transfer. We consider a stochastic individual-based pure jump process taking values in the space of point measures, and whose jump events describe the individual reproduction, transfer and death mechanisms. In a large population scale, the stochastic process is proved …
We are interested in modeling the Darwinian evolution resulting from the interplay of phenotypic variation and natural selection through ecological interactions, in the specific scales of the biological framework of adaptive dynamics. Adaptive dynamics so far has been put on a rigorous footing only for direct competition models (Lotka-Volterra models) involving a competition kernel which describes the competition pressure from one individual to another one. We extend this to a multi-resources chemostat model, where the competition between individuals results from the sharing of several resourc…
