Entanglement is one of the most intriguing features of quantum theory and a main resource in quantum information science. Ground states of quantum many-body systems with local interactions typically obey an "area law" meaning the entanglement entropy proportional to the boundary length. It is exceptional when the system is gapless, and the area law had been believed to be violated by at most a logarithm for over two decades. Recent discovery of Motzkin and Fredkin spin chain models is striking, since these models provide significant violation of the entanglement beyond the belief, growing as a square root of the volume in spite of local interactions. Although importance of intensive study of the models is undoubted to reveal novel features of quantum entanglement, it is still far from their complete understanding. In this article, we first analytically compute the Renyi entropy of the Motzkin and Fredkin models by careful treatment of asymptotic analysis. The Renyi entropy is an important quantity, since the whole spectrum of an entangled subsystem is reconstructed once the Renyi entropy is known as a function of its parameter. We find non-analytic behavior of the Renyi entropy with respect to the parameter, which is a novel phase transition never seen in any other spin chain studied so far. Interestingly, similar behavior is seen in the Renyi entropy of Rokhsar-Kivelson states in two-dimensions.
We explore the role of sandwiched Renyi relative entropy in AdS/CFT and in finite-dimensional models of holographic quantum error correction. In particular, in the context of operator algebra quantum error correction, we discuss a suitable generalization of sandwiched Renyi relative entropy over finite-dimensional von Neumann algebras. It is then shown that the equality of bulk and boundary sandwiched relative Renyi entropies is equivalent to algebraic encoding of bulk and boundary states, the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, the equality of bulk and boundary relative entropy, and subregion duality. Th…
This paper introduces "swiveled Renyi entropies" as an alternative to the Renyi entropic quantities put forward in [Berta et al., Phys. Rev. A 91, 022333 (2015)]. What distinguishes the swiveled Renyi entropies from the prior proposal of Berta et al. is that there is an extra degree of freedom: an optimization over unitary rotations with respect to particular fixed bases (swivels). A consequence of this extra degree of freedom is that the swiveled Renyi entropies are ordered, which is an important property of the Renyi family of entropies. The swiveled Renyi entropies are however generally dis…
We investigate the energy eigenstate Rényi entropy of generic bipartition in the fermionic, bosonic, and spin-1/2 XY chains. When the gap of the theory is large or all the momenta of the excited quasiparticles are large, the Rényi entropy takes a universal form, which is independent of the model, the quasiparticle momenta, and the subsystem connectedness. We calculate analytically the Rényi entropy in the extremely gapped limit and find different additional contributions to the universal Rényi entropy in various models. The corrections to the universal Rényi entropy cannot be neglected when th…
We compute the Renyi entropy and the supersymmetric Renyi entropy for the six-dimensional free (2,0) tensor multiplet. We make various checks on our results, and they are consistent with the previous results about the (2,0) tensor multiplet. As a by-product, we have established a canonical way to compute the Renyi entropy for p-form fields in d-dimensions.
Dimensional regularization is a common method used to regulate the UV divergence of field theoretic quantities. When it is used in the context of Renyi entropy, however, it is important to consider whether such a procedure eliminates the statistical interpretation thereof as a measure of entanglement of states living on a Hilbert space. We therefore examine the dimensionally regularized Renyi entropy of a 4d unitary CFT and show that it admits no underlying Hilbert space in the state-counting sense. This gives a concrete proof that dimensionally regularized Renyi entropy cannot always be obtai…
We propose and experimentally measure an entropy that quantifies the volume of correlations among qubits. The experiment is carried out on a nearly isolated quantum system composed of a central spin coupled and initially uncorrelated with 15 other spins. Due to the spin-spin interactions, information flows from the central spin to the surrounding ones forming clusters of multi-spin correlations that grow in time. We design a nuclear magnetic resonance experiment that directly measures the amplitudes of the multi-spin correlations and use them to compute the evolution of what we call correlatio…
In local quantum circuits with charge conservation, we initialize the system in random product states and study the dynamics of the Renyi entanglement entropy $R_α$. We rigorously prove that $R_α$ with Renyi index $α>1$ at time $t$ is $\le O(\sqrt{t\ln t})$ if the transport of charges is diffusive. Very recent numerical results of Rakovszky et al. show that this upper bound is saturated (up to the sub-logarithmic correction) in random local quantum circuits with charge conservation.

My previous work [arXiv:1902.00977] studied the dynamics of Rényi entanglement entropy $R_α$ in local quantum circuits with charge conservation. Initializing the system in a random product state, it was proved that $R_α$ with Rényi index $α>1$ grows no faster than "diffusively" (up to a sublogarithmic correction) if charge transport is not faster than diffusive. The proof was given only for qubit or spin-$1/2$ systems. In this note, I extend the proof to qudit systems, i.e., spin systems with local dimension $d\ge2$.
We show that in any two dimensional conformal field theory with (2, 2) supersymmetry one can define a supersymmetric analog of the usual Renyi entropy of a spatial region A. It differs from the Renyi entropy by a universal function (which we compute) of the central charge, Renyi parameter n and the geometric parameters of A. In the limit $n \to1$ it coincides with the entanglement entropy. Thus, it contains the same information as the Renyi entropy but its computation only involves correlation functions of chiral and anti-chiral operators. We also show that this quantity appears naturally in s…
The entanglement and Rényi entropies for spherical entangling surfaces in CFTs with gravity duals can be explicitly calculated by mapping these entropies first to the thermal entropy on hyperbolic space and then, using the AdS/CFT correspondence, to the Wald entropy of topological black holes. Here we extend this idea by taking into account corrections to the Wald entropy. Using the method based on horizon symmetries and the asymptotic Cardy formula, we calculate corrections to the Wald entropy and find that these corrections are proportional to the logarithm of horizon area. With the correcte…
We study the Rényi entropy and subsystem distances on one interval for the finite size and thermal states in the critical XY chains, focusing on the critical Ising chain and XX chain with zero transverse field. We construct numerically the reduced density matrices and calculate the von Neumann entropy, Rényi entropy, subsystem trace distance, Schatten two-distance, and relative entropy. As the continuum limit of the critical Ising chain and XX chain with zero field are, respectively, the two-dimensional free massless Majorana and Dirac fermion theories, which are conformal field theories, we c…
Entropy is a fundamental concept in equilibrium statistical mechanics, yet its origin in the non-equilibrium dynamics of isolated quantum systems is not fully understood. A strong consensus is emerging around the idea that the stationary thermodynamic entropy is the von Neumann entanglement entropy of a large subsystem embedded in an infinite system. Also motivated by cold-atom experiments, here we consider the generalisation to Renyi entropies. We develop a new technique to calculate the diagonal Renyi entropy in the quench action formalism. In the spirit of the replica treatment for the enta…
Rényi and entanglement entropies are constructed for 2d q-deformed topological Yang-Mills theories with gauge group $U(N)$, as well as the dual 3d Chern-Simons (CS) theory on Seifert manifolds. When $q=\exp[2πi/(N+K)]$, and $K$ is odd, the topological Rényi entropy and Wilson line observables of the CS theory can be expressed in terms of the modular transformation matrices of the WZW theory, $\rm{\hat{U}(N)}_{K,N(K+N)}$. If both $K$ and $N$ are odd, there is a level-rank duality of the 2d qYM theory and of the associated CS theory, as well as that of the Rényi and entanglement entropies, and W…
We evaluate one-interval Rényi entropy and entanglement entropy for the excited states of two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) on a cylinder, and examine their differences from the ones for the thermal state. We assume the interval to be short so that we can use operator product expansion (OPE) of twist operators to calculate Rényi entropy in terms of sum of one-point functions of OPE blocks. We find that the entanglement entropy for highly excited state and thermal state behave the same way after appropriate identification of the conformal weight of the state with the temperature. How…
A remarkable yet mysterious property of black holes is that their entropy is proportional to the horizon area. This area law inspired the holographic principle, which was later realized concretely in gauge/gravity duality. In this context, entanglement entropy is given by the area of a minimal surface in a dual spacetime. However, discussions of area laws have been constrained to entanglement entropy, whereas a full understanding of a quantum state requires Renyi entropies. Here we show that all Renyi entropies satisfy a similar area law in holographic theories and are given by the areas of du…
In this article we explore a certain definition of "alternate quantization" for the critical O(N) model. We elaborate on a prescription to evaluate the Renyi entropy of alternately quantized critical O(N) model. We show that there exists new saddles of the q-Renyi free energy functional corresponding to putting certain combinations of the Kaluza-Klein modes into alternate quantization. This leads us to an analysis of trying to determine the true state of the theory by trying to ascertain the global minima among these saddle points.
We describe the defect operator interpretation of the supersymmetric Renyi entropies of superconformal field theories in three, four and five dimensions. The operators involved are supersymmetric codimension-two defects in an auxiliary Z_n gauge theory coupled to n copies of the SCFT. We compute the exact expectation values of such operators using localization, and compare the results to the supersymmetric Renyi entropy. The agreement between the two implies a relationship between the partition function on a squashed sphere and the one on a round sphere in the presence of defects.
Renyi entropy and central charge, $C_T$, are calculated for a coexact p--form on an even sphere with particular reference to the conformally invariant case. It is shown, for example, that the entanglement entropy is minus the standard conformal anomaly with no `shift' being required. The shift necessary for a conformal p--form, when using a hyperbolic technique, is predicted, on a numerical basis, to be (minus) the entanglement entropy of a conformal (p-1)-form. The central charges agree numerically with a general formula of Buchel {\it et al}.
In this paper, we study the scalar field condensation around the hyperbolic black hole solutions in the Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravities. We investigate the Renyi entropy and inequalities governing on it under this phase transition. Our numerical computations show that for the positive values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling and below a critical temperature one of these inequalities is violated. This puts more restrictions on the allowed values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling.
