Energy-efficient switching of magnetization is a central problem in nonvolatile magnetic storage and magnetic neuromorphic computing. In the past two decades, several efficient methods of magnetic switching were demonstrated including spin torque, magneto-electric, and microwave-assisted switching mechanisms. Here we report the discovery of a new mechanism giving rise to magnetic switching. We experimentally show that low-dimensional magnetic chaos induced by alternating spin torque can strongly increase the rate of thermally-activated magnetic switching in a nanoscale ferromagnet. This mechanism exhibits a well-pronounced threshold character in spin torque amplitude and its efficiency increases with decreasing spin torque frequency. We present analytical and numerical calculations that quantitatively explain these experimental findings and reveal the key role played by low-dimensional magnetic chaos near saddle equilibria in enhancement of the switching rate. Our work unveils an important interplay between chaos and stochasticity in the energy assisted switching of magnetic nanosystems and paves the way towards improved energy efficiency of spin torque memory and logic.
We present thermoelectric measurements of the heat dissipated due to ferromagnetic resonance of a Permalloy strip. A microwave magnetic field, produced by an on-chip coplanar strip waveguide, is used to drive the magnetization precession. The generated heat is detected via Seebeck measurements on a thermocouple connected to the ferromagnet. The observed resonance peak shape is in agreement with the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation and is compared with thermoelectric finite element modeling. Unlike other methods, this technique is not restricted to electrically conductive media and is therefore…
Magnetic damping is a key metric for emerging technologies based on magnetic nanoparticles, such as spin torque memory and high-resolution biomagnetic imaging. Despite its importance, understanding of magnetic dissipation in nanoscale ferromagnets remains elusive, and the damping is often treated as a phenomenological constant. Here we report the discovery of a giant frequency-dependent nonlinear damping that strongly alters the response of a nanoscale ferromagnet to spin torque and microwave magnetic field. This novel damping mechanism originates from three-magnon scattering that is strongly …
We demonstrate a scalable new ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique based on the spin-orbit interaction. An alternating current drives FMR in uniform ferromagnetic structures patterned from the dilute magnetic semiconductors (Ga,Mn)As and (Ga,Mn)(As,P). This allows the direct measurement of magnetic anisotropy coefficients and damping parameters for individual nano-bars. By analysing the ferromagnetic resonance lineshape, we perform vector magnetometry on the current-induced driving field, observing contributions with symmetries of both the Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit interactions.
We show through density functional theory calculations that extended magnetic states can inherently occur in oxides as the size of the crystals is reduced down to the nanometer scale even when they do not explicitly include intrinsic defects. This is because in nanoscale systems crystallographically perfect crystallites paradoxically result in nonstoichiometric compositions owing to the finite number of constituting atoms. In these structurally perfect but stoichiometrically imperfect nanocrystallites, the spin-triplet state is found to be more stable than the spin-singlet state, giving rise t…
We investigate the statistical properties of wave functions in chaotic nanostructures with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), focussing in particular on spatial correlations of eigenfunctions. Numerical results from a microscopic model are compared with results from random matrix theory in the crossover from the gaussian orthogonal to the gaussian symplectic ensembles (with increasing SOC); one- and two-point distribution functions were computed to understand the properties of eigenfunctions in this crossover. It is found that correlations of wave function amplitudes are suppressed with SOC; neverthel…
Spin-transfer torque (STT) effects on the stationary forced response of nanoscale ferromagnets subject to thermal fluctuations and driven by an ac magnetic field of arbitrary strength and direction are investigated via a generic nanopillar model of a spin-torque device comprising two ferromagnetic strata representing the free and fixed layers and a nonmagnetic conducting spacer all sandwiched between two ohmic contacts. The STT effects are treated via the Brown magnetic Langevin equation generalized to include the Slonczewski STT term thereby extending the statistical moment method [Y. P. Kalm…
The core of a ferromagnetic vortex domain creates a strong, localized magnetic field which can be manipulated on nanosecond timescales, providing a platform for addressing and controlling individual nitrogen-vacancy center spins in diamond at room temperature, with nanometer-scale resolution. First, we show that the ferromagnetic vortex can be driven into proximity with a nitrogen-vacancy defect using small applied magnetic fields, inducing significant nitrogen-vacancy spin splitting. Second, we find that the magnetic field gradient produced by the vortex is sufficient to address spins separat…
The advance of magnetic nanotechnologies relies on detailed understanding of nanoscale magnetic mechanisms in materials. Magnetic domain memory (MDM), i.e., the tendency for magnetic domains to repeat the same pattern during field-cycling, is important to many technologies including magnetic recording developments. We show coherent x-ray magnetic scattering studies unveiling MDM in [Co/Pd]/IrMn films. When illuminated by coherent x-rays, the magnetic domains in the [Co/Pd] multilayer produce a speckle pattern unique to their specific nanoscale configuration. By cross-correlating such speckle p…
The Dzyaloshinskii Moriya Interaction (DMI) has laid the foundation for many novel chiral structures such as Skyrmions. In most of the studies so far, the DMI is present in the whole of the magnetic layer. Here, we report our investigations on a ferromagnetic nanowire where DMI is confined to a nanoscale region. We observe that the local modulation of magnetic properties causes oscillation of domain walls under the influence of spin-transfer torque. The oscillation frequency is tunable within a few GHz, making this observation potentially useful for applications in neuromorphic computing.
We study the transport properties of nanoscale superconducting (S) devices in which two superconducting electrodes are bridged by two parallel ferromagnetic (F) wires, forming an SFFS junction with a separation between the two wires less than the superconducting coherence length. This allows crossed Andreev reflection to take place. We find that the resistance as a function of temperature exhibits behavior reminiscent of the re-entrant effect and, at low temperatures and excitation energies below the superconducting gap, the resistance corresponding to antiparallel alignment of the magnetizati…
In our former work (Sci. Rep. 4: 6039, 2014), we theoretically and numerically demonstrated that chaotic oscillation can be induced in a nanoscale system consisting of quantum dots between which energy transfer occurs via optical near-field interactions. Furthermore, in addition to the nanoscale implementation of oscillators, it is intriguing that the chaotic behavior is associated with probability derived via a density matrix formalism. Indeed, in our previous work (Sci. Rep. 6: 38634, 2016) we examined such oscillating probabilities via diffusivity analysis by constructing random walkers dri…
We have synthesized nanoscale magnetic compasses with high yield. These ferromagnetic iron carbide nano-particles, which are encapsulated in a pair of parallel carbon needles, change their direction in response to an external magnetic field. Electron holography reveals magnetic fields confined to the vicinity of the bicone-shaped particles, which are composed of few ferromagnetic domains. Aligned magnetically and encapsulated in an acrylate polymer matrix, these nanocompasses exhibit anisotropic bulk magnetic permeability with an easy axis normal to the needle direction, that can be understood…
We investigate the effect of low-coordinated surface atoms on the defect-induced magnetism in MgO nanocrystallites using hybrid density functional theory calculations. It has been demonstrated that when Mg vacancies are introduced at the corners of cube-like MgO clusters, a magnetic state becomes lower in total energy than the nonmagnetic singlet state by 1-2 eV, resulting in the spin-polarized ground state. The spin density is not only located at the surrounding O atoms neighbor to the corner Mg vacancy site but is also extended to the distant (1 nm or longer) low-coordinated surface O atoms …
By using nanoscale energy-transfer dynamics and density matrix formalism, we demonstrate theoretically and numerically that chaotic oscillation and random-number generation occur in a nanoscale system. The physical system consists of a pair of quantum dots (QDs), with one QD smaller than the other, between which energy transfers via optical near-field interactions. When the system is pumped by continuous-wave radiation and incorporates a timing delay between two energy transfers within the system, it emits optical pulses. We refer to such QD pairs as nano-optical pulsers (NOPs). Irradiating an…
We demonstrate optical detection of a broad spectrum of ferromagnetic excitations using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in an ensemble of nanodiamonds. Our recently developed approach exploits a straightforward CW detection scheme using readily available diamond detectors, making it easily implementable. The NV center is a local detector, giving the technique spatial resolution, which here is defined by our laser spot, but in principle can be extended far into the nanoscale. Among the excitations we observe are propagating dipolar and dipolar-exchange spinwaves, as well as dynamics associated wi…
Polarized Neutron Reflectometry and magnetometry measurements have been used to obtain a comprehensive picture of the magnetic structure of a series of La{2/3}Sr{1/3}MnO{3}/Pr{2/3}Ca{1/3}MnO{3} (LSMO/PCMO) superlattices, with varying thickness of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) PCMO layers (0<=t_A<=7.6 nm). While LSMO presents a few magnetically frustrated monolayers at the interfaces with PCMO, in the latter a magnetic contribution due to FM inclusions within the AFM matrix was found to be maximized at t_A~3 nm. This enhancement of the FM moment occurs at the matching between layer thickness and …
: Understanding the correlations between magnetic nanoparticles is important for nanotechnologies, such as high-density magnetic recording and biomedical applications, where functionalized magnetic particles are used as contrast agents and for drug delivery. The ability to control the magnetic state of individual particles depends on the good knowledge of magnetic correlations between particles when assembled. Inaccessible via standard magnetometry techniques, nanoscale magnetic ordering in self-assemblies of Fe3O4 nanoparticles is here unveiled via x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). M…
The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation, used to model magneto-dynamics in ferromagnets, tacitly assumes that the angular momentum associated with spin precession can relax instantaneously when the real or effective magnetic field causing the precession is turned off. This neglect of "spin inertia" is unphysical and would violate energy conservation. Recently, the LLG equation was modified to account for inertia effects. The consensus, however, seems to be that such effects would be unimportant in slow magneto-dynamics that take place over time scales much longer that the relaxation time of…

We demonstrate a technique of broadband spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) with magnetic field modulation for measurements of spin wave properties in magnetic nanostructures. This technique gives great improvement in sensitivity over the conventional ST-FMR measurements, and application of this technique to nanoscale magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) reveals a rich spectrum of standing spin wave eigenmodes. Comparison of the ST-FMR measurements with micromagnetic simulations of the spin wave spectrum allows us to explain the character of low-frequency magnetic excitations in nanoscale…
We investigate submicron ferromagnetic PdNi thin-film strips intended as contact electrodes for carbon nanotube-based spintronic devices. The magnetic anisotropy and micromagnetic structure are measured as function of temperature and aspect ratio. Contrary to the expectation from shape anisotropy, magnetic hysteresis measurements of Pd0.3Ni0.7 on arrays containing strips of various width point towards a magnetically easy axis in the sample plane, but transversal to the strip direction. Anisotropic magnetoresistance measured on individual Pd0.3Ni0.7 contact strips and magnetic force microscopy …
An enhancement of the spin-orbit effects arising on an interface between a ferromagnet (FM) and a heavy metal (HM) is possible through the strong breaking of the structural inversion symmetry in the layered films. Here we show that the introduction of an ultrathin W interlayer between Co and Ru in Ru/Co/Ru films enables to preserve perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and simultaneously induce a large interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI). We find that the Ru/Co/W/Ru films have PMA up to 0.35 nm of the nominal thickness of W (tW). The study of the spin-wave propagation in the…
Magnetic-domain structure and dynamics play an important role in understanding and controlling the magnetic properties of two-dimensional magnets, which are of interest to both fundamental studies and applications[1-5]. However, the probe methods based on the spin-dependent optical permeability[1,2,6] and electrical conductivity[7-10] can neither provide quantitative information of the magnetization nor achieve nanoscale spatial resolution. These capabilities are essential to image and understand the rich properties of magnetic domains. Here, we employ cryogenic scanning magnetometry using a s…
Entanglement between spatially separated electrons in nanoscale transport is a fundamental property, yet to be demonstrated experimentally. Here we propose and analyse theoretically the transport statistics of a generic spin entangler coupled to a hybrid quantum dot-ferromagnet detector system. We show that the full distribution of charges arriving at the ferromagnetic terminals provide complete information on the spin state of the particles emitted by the entangler. This provides means for spin entanglement detection via electrical current correlations, with optimal measurement strategies dep…
We report the manipulation of nitrogen vacancy (NV) spins in diamond when nearby ferrimagnetic insulator, yttrium iron garnet, is driven into precession. The change in NV spin polarization, as measured by changes in photoluminescence, is comparable in magnitude to that from conventional optically detected magnetic resonance, but relies on a distinct mechanism as it occurs at a microwave frequency far removed from the magnetic resonance frequency of the NV spin. This observation presents a new approach to transferring ferromagnetic spin information into a paramagnet and then transducing the res…
We investigate non-linear magneto-transport through a single level quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads, where the electron spin is coupled to a large, external (pseudo)spin via an anisotropic exchange interaction. We find regimes where the average current through the dot displays self-sustained oscillations that reflect the limit-cycles and chaos and map the dependence of this behaviour on magnetic field strength and the tunnel coupling to the external leads.
The recent discovery of ferromagnetism in 2D van der Waals (vdw) crystals has generated widespread interest, owing to their potential for fundamental and applied research. Advancing the understanding and applications of vdw magnets requires methods to quantitatively probe their magnetic properties on the nanoscale. Here, we report the study of atomically thin crystals of the vdw magnet CrI$_3$ down to individual monolayers using scanning single-spin magnetometry, and demonstrate quantitative, nanoscale imaging of magnetisation, localised defects and magnetic domains. We determine the magnetisa…
Thermal-magnetic noise at ferromagnetic resonance (T-FMR) can be used to measure magnetic perpendicular anisotropy of nanoscale magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). For this purpose, T-FMR measurements were conducted with an external magnetic field up to 14 kOe applied perpendicular to the film surface of MgO-based MTJs under a dc bias. The observed frequency-field relationship suggests that a 20 A CoFeB free layer has an effective demagnetization field much smaller than the intrinsic bulk value of CoFeB, with 4PiMeff = (6.1 +/- 0.3) kOe. This value is consistent with the saturation field obtaine…
The magnetic textures on nanoscale possess topological features due to the continuity of the magnetization vector field and its boundary conditions. In thin planar nanoelements, where the dependence of the magnetization across the thickness is inessential, the textures can be represented as a soup of 2-d topological solitons, corresponding to magnetic vortices and antivortices, which are the solutions of Skyrme's model. Topology of the element (of the boundary conditions) then imposes the restrictions on properties and locations of these objects. Periodic arrays of magnetic antidots have topol…
Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SPSTM) was used to directly image nanoscale Néel skyrmions in a SrIrO3 / SrRuO3 bilayer system that are among the smallest reported to date in any system. Off-axis magnetron sputtering was used to cap epitaxial films of the oxide ferromagnet SRO with 2 unit cells of SrIrO3, intended to provide interfacial spin orbit coupling. Atomic resolution STM imaging and tunneling spectroscopy were used to identify island-like SrIrO3 grains and small regions of bare SrRuO3. Isolated skyrmions were only observed in SrIrO3-covered regions of the film, and exhibi…
We investigate spin-charge conversion phenomena in hybrid structures of topological insulator (TI) thin films and magnetic insulators. We find an anisotropic inverse spin-galvanic effect (ISGE) that yields a highly tunable spin-orbit torque (SOT). Concentrating on the quasiballistic limit, we also predict a giant anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) at low dopings. These effects, which have no counterparts in thick TIs, depend on the simultaneous presence of the hybridization between the surface states and the in-plane magnetization. Both the ISGE and AMR exhibit a strong dependence on the magn…
Spin-valve based nanojunctions incorporating Co|Ni multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy were used to study spin-torque driven ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) in a nonlinear regime. Perpendicular field swept resonance lines were measured under a large amplitude microwave current excitation, which produces a large angle precession of the Co|Ni layer magnetization. With increasing rf power the resonance lines broaden and become asymmetric, with their peak shifting to lower applied field. A nonhysteretic step jump in ST-FMR voltage signal was also observed at high powers. The results are ana…
Antiferromagnets have recently emerged as attractive platforms for spintronics applications, offering fundamentally new functionalities compared to their ferromagnetic counterparts. While nanoscale thin film materials are key to the development of future antiferromagnetic spintronics technologies, experimental tools to explore such films on the nanoscale are still sparse. Here, we offer a solution to this technological bottleneck, by addressing the ubiquitous surface magnetisation of magnetoelectic antiferromagnets in a granular thin film sample on the nanoscale using single-spin magnetometry …
We present a scanning transmission x-ray microscopy setup combined with a novel microwave synchronization scheme in order to study high frequency magnetization dynamics at synchrotron light sources. The sensitivity necessary to detect small changes of the magnetization on short time scales and nanometer spatial dimensions is achieved by combination of the developed excitation mechanism with a single photon counting electronics that is locked to the synchrotron operation frequency. The required mechanical stability is achieved by a compact design of the microscope. Our instrument is capable of …
We report quantitative measurements of optically detected ferromagnetic resonance (ODFMR) of ferromagnetic thin films that use nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamonds to transduce FMR into a fluorescence intensity variation. To uncover the mechanism responsible for these signals, we study ODFMR as we 1) vary the separation of the NV centers from the ferromagnet (FM), 2) record the NV center longitudinal relaxation time $T_1$ during FMR, and 3) vary the material properties of the FM. Based on the results, we propose the following mechanism for ODFMR. Decay and scattering of the driven, unifor…
We present a study of the influence of an external magnetic field H and an electric current I on the spin-valve (SV) effect between a ferromagnetic thin film (F) and a sharp tip of a nonmagnetic metal (N). To explain our observations, we propose a model of a local surface SV which is formed in such a N/F contact. In this model, a ferromagnetic cluster at the N/F interface plays the role of the free layer in this SV. This cluster exhibits a larger coercive field than the bulk of the ferromagnetic film, presumably due to its nanoscale nature. Finally, we construct a magnetic state diagram of the…
Ferroic materials (ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, ferroelastic) usually divide into domains with different orientations of their order parameter. Coupling different ferroic systems creates new functionalities, for instance the electrical control of macroscopic magnetic properties including magnetization and coercive field. Here we show that ferroelastic domains can be used to control both magnetic order and magnetization direction at the nanoscale with a voltage. We use element-specific x-ray imaging to map the magnetic domains as a function of temperature and voltage in epitaxial FeRh on ferro…
Magnetic domain memory (MDM) is the ability exhibited by certain magnetic materials to reproduce the exact same nanoscale magnetic domain pattern, even after it has been completely erased by an external magnetic field. In this chapter, we review the various circumstances under which this unusual phenomenon occurs. We explain how partial MDM was first observed in rough Co/Pt multilayers with perpendicular magnetization as a result of structural defects. We then show how 100 % MDM was achieved, even in smooth ferromagnetic films, by coupling Co/Pd multilayers to an antiferromagnetic IrMn templat…
Layered ferromagnets with high coercivity have special applications in nanoscale memory elements in electronic circuits, such as data storage. Therefore, searching for new hard ferromagnets and effectively tuning or enhancing the coercivity are the hottest topics in layered magnets today. Here, we report a strain tunability of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets VI3 using magnetic circular dichroism measurements. For an unstrained flake, the M-H curve shows a rectangular-shaped hysteresis loop with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a large coercivity (up t…
Two complementary effects modify the GHz magnetization dynamics of nanoscale heterostructures of ferromagnetic and normal materials relative to those of the isolated magnetic constituents: On the one hand, a time-dependent ferromagnetic magnetization pumps a spin angular-momentum flow into adjacent materials and, on the other hand, spin angular momentum is transferred between ferromagnets by an applied bias, causing mutual torques on the magnetizations. These phenomena are manifestly nonlocal: they are governed by the entire spin-coherent region that is limited in size by spin-flip relaxation …
We demonstrate that spin-orbit coupled electrons in a magnetically doped system exert a spin torque on the local magnetization, without a flowing current, when the chemical potential is modulated in a magnetic field. The spin torque is proportional to the anomalous Hall conductivity, and its effective field strength may overcome the Zeeman field. Using this effect, the direction of the local magnetization is switched by gate control in a thin film. This charge-induced spin torque is essentially an equilibrium effect, in contrast to the conventional current-induced spin-orbit torque, and, thus,…
Spintronics had a widespread impact over the past decades due to transferring information by spin rather than electric currents. Its further development requires miniaturization and reduction of characteristic timescales of spin dynamics combining the sub-nanometer spatial and femtosecond temporal ranges. These demands shift the focus of interest towards the fundamental open question of the interaction of femtosecond spin current (SC) pulses with a ferromagnet (FM). The spatio-temporal properties of the impulsive spin transfer torque exerted by ultrashort SC pulses on the FM open the time doma…
Systematic measurements pertinent to the magnetocaloric effect and nature of magnetic transition around the transition temperature are performed in the 10 nm Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 nanoparticles (PCMO10) . Maxwell relation is employed to estimate the change in magnetic entropy. At Curie temperature TC, 83.5 K, the change in magnetic entropy discloses a typical variation with a value 0.57 J/kg K, and is found to be magnetic field dependent. From the area under the curve Delta S vs T, the refrigeration capacity is calculated at TC, 83.5 K and it is found to be 7.01 J/kg. Arrott plots infer that due to t…
Controlling magnetism using voltage is highly desired for applications, but remains challenging due to fundamental contradiction between polarity and magnetism. Here we propose a mechanism to manipulate magnetic domain walls in ferrimagnetic or ferromagnetic multiferroics using electric field. Different from those studies based on static domain-level couplings, here the magnetoelectric coupling relies on the collaborative spin dynamics around domain walls. Accompanying the reversal of spin chirality driven by polarization switching, a "rolling-downhill"-like motion of domain wall is achieved a…
Magnetization switching in a fine-structured ferromagnet of nanoscale by the spin-transfer torque excited via the spin Hall effect has attracted much attention because it enables us to manipulate the magnetization without directly applying current to the ferromagnet. However, the switching mechanism is still unclear in regard to the ferromagnet having an in-plane easy axis parallel to the current. Here, we develop an analytical theory of the magnetization switching in this type of ferromagnet, and reveal the threshold current formulas for a deterministic switching. It is clarified that the cur…
The study concerns dynamics of standing spin waves in arrays of sub-100 nm elliptic synthetic-antiferromagnet (SAF) nanodisks. We performed a detailed ferromagnetic resonance analysis in conjunction with micromagnetic modeling to find out several prominent traits of such systems. One broad line is shown to be the sole resonant response for a SAF of the considered sizes. We demonstrate that this mode is degenerated, and its excitation map resembles a superposition of in-center and edge-type oscillations. We also show how this hybrid excitation leads to almost twofold enhancement in the shape-in…
Two-dimensional magnets are promising for nanoscale spintronic applications. Currently, most available candidates are based on $3d$ transition metal compounds, with hexagonal or honeycomb lattice geometry. Here, a GdCl$_3$ monolayer with $4f$ moments is theoretically studied, which can be exfoliated from its existing bulk. Its orthorhombic structure and hendecahedral ion cages are unique in two-dimensional. Furthermore, a significant structural reconstruction is caused by the implantation of Li atoms into its interstitial position, which also lead to ferromagnetism via a double-exchange-like p…
We present a new approach to infer the surface density of magnetic moments $I_s$ in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with perpendicular anisotropy. It relies on quantitative stray field measurements with an atomic-size magnetometer based on the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The method is applied to microstructures patterned in a 1-nm-thick film of CoFeB. We report measurements of $I_s$ with a few percent uncertainty and a spatial resolution in the range of $(100$ nm)$^2$, an improvement by several orders of magnitude over existing methods. As an example of application, we measure the modifi…
A sufficiently large unpolarized current can cause a spin-wave instability in thin nanomagnets with asymmetric contacts. The dynamics beyond the instability is understood in the perturbative regime of small spin-wave amplitudes, as well as by numerically solving a discretized model. In the absence of an applied magnetic field, our numerical simulations reveal a hierarchy of instabilities, leading to chaotic magnetization dynamics for the largest current densities we consider.
The realization of high-performance, small-footprint, on-chip inductors remains a challenge in radio-frequency and power microelectronics, where they perform vital energy transduction in filters and power converters. Modern planar inductors consist of metallic spirals that consume significant chip area, resulting in low inductance densities. We present a novel method for magnetic energy transduction that utilizes ferromagnetic islands (FIs) on the surface of a 3D time-reversal-invariant topological insulator (TI) to produce paradigmatically different inductors. Depending on the chemical potent…
The usually negligibly small thermoelectric effects in superconducting heterostructures can be boosted dramatically due to the simultaneous effect of spin splitting and spin filtering. Building on an idea of our earlier work [Phys. Rev. Lett. $\textbf{110}$, 047002 (2013)], we propose realistic mesoscopic setups to observe thermoelectric effects in superconductor heterostructures with ferromagnetic interfaces or terminals. We focus on the Seebeck effect being a direct measure of the local thermoelectric response and find that a thermopower of the order of $\sim200$ $μV/K$ can be achieved in a …
