Spin-to-charge current interconversions are widely exploited for the generation and detection of pure spin currents and are key ingredients for future spintronic devices including spin-orbit torques and spin-orbit logic circuits. In case of the spin Hall effect, different mechanisms contribute to the phenomenon and determining the leading contribution is peremptory for achieving the largest conversion efficiencies. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the dominance of the intrinsic mechanism of the spin Hall effect in highly-resistive Ta. We obtain an intrinsic spin Hall conductivity for $β$-Ta of -820$\pm$120 ($\hbar$/e) $Ω^{-1}cm^{-1}$ from spin absorption experiments in a large set of lateral spin valve devices. The predominance of the intrinsic mechanism in Ta allows us to linearly enhance the spin Hall angle by tuning the resistivity of Ta, reaching up to -35$\pm$3%, the largest reported value for a pure metal.
The quantum localization in the quantum Hall regime is revisited using Graphene monolayers with accurate measurements of the longitudinal resistivity as a function of temperature and current. We experimentally show for the first time a cross-over from Efros-Shklovskii Variable Range Hopping (VRH) conduction regime with Coulomb interactions to a Mott VRH regime without interaction. This occurs at Hall plateau transitions for localization lengths larger than the interaction screening length set by the nearby gate. Measurements of the scaling exponents of the conductance peak widths with both tem…
Magnons enable transferring a magnetic moment or spin over macroscopic distance. In quantum Hall ferromagnet, it has been predicted in the early 90s that spin and charges are entangled, meaning that any change of the spin texture modifies the charge distribution. As a direct consequence of this entanglement, magnons carry an electric dipole moment. Here we report the first evidence of the existence of this electric dipole moment in a graphene quantum Hall ferromagnet using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer as a quantum sensor. By propagating towards the interferometer through an insulating bulk, t…

Recent discovery of spin-orbit torques (SOTs) within magnetic single-layers has attracted attention in the field of spintronics. However, it has remained elusive as to how to understand and how to tune the SOTs. Here, utilizing the single layers of chemically disordered Fe$_x$Pt$_{1-x}$, we unveil the mechanism of the "unexpected" bulk SOTs by studying their dependence on the introduction of a controlled vertical composition gradient and on temperature. We find that the bulk damping like SOT arises from an imbalanced internal spin current that is transversely polarized and independent of the m…
Collective modes of exotic quantum fluids reveal underlying physical mechanisms responsible for emergent complex quantum ground states. We observe unexpected new collective modes in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime: intra-Landau-level plasmons in the second Landau level measured by resonant inelastic light scattering. The plasmons herald rotational-symmetry-breaking phases in tilted magnetic fields and reveal long-range translational invariance in these phases. The fascinating dependence of plasmon features on filling factor provide new insights on interplays between topological quantu…
The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at magnetic transition metal/oxide interfaces is a key element in building out-of-plane magnetized magnetic tunnel junctions for spin-transfer-torque magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM). Size downscaling renders magnetic properties more sensitive to thermal effects. Thus, understanding the temperature dependence of the magnetic anisotropy is crucial. In this work, we theoretically address the correlation between temperature dependence of PMA and magnetization in typical Fe/MgO-based structures. In particular, the possible mechanisms behind the e…
We report an investigation of the spin- to charge-current conversion in sputter-deposited films of topological insulator $Bi_2Se_{3}$ onto single crystalline layers of YIG $(Y_{3}Fe_{5}O_{12})$ and polycrystalline films of Permalloy $(Py = Ni_{81}Fe_{19})$. Pure spin current was injected into the $Bi_{2}Se_{3}$ layer by means of the spin pumping process in which the spin precession is obtained by exciting the ferromagnetic resonance of the ferromagnetic film. The spin-current to charge-current conversion, occurring at the $Bi_{2}Se_{3}/$ferromagnet interface, was attribute to the inverse Rashb…
In order to describe correctly the interplay of extrinsic and intrinsic spin-orbit mechanisms to the spin Hall effect, it is necessary to consider different sources of spin relaxation. We take into account the spin relaxation time $τ_{DP}$ due to the Dyakonov-Perel mechanism as well as the Elliot-Yafet spin-relaxation time $τ_s$ due to the spin-orbit scattering from impurities. The total spin Hall conductivity depends crucially on the ratio $τ_s /τ_{DP}$.

We theoretically study the interplay between bulk Weyl electrons and magnetic topological defects, including magnetic domains, domain walls, and $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortex lines, in the antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals \mnsn\ and Mn$_3$Ge with negative vector chirality. We argue that these materials possess a hierarchy of energies scales which allows a description of the spin structure and spin dynamics using a XY model with $\mathbb{Z}_6$ anisotropy. We propose a dynamical equation of motion for the XY order parameter, which implies the presence of $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortex lines, the double-domain p…

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically wound nanoscale textures of spins whose ambient stability and electrical manipulation in multilayer films have led to an explosion of research activities. While past efforts focused predominantly on isolated skyrmions, recently ensembles of chiral spin textures, consisting of skyrmions and magnetic stripes, were shown to possess rich interactions with potential for device applications. However, several fundamental aspects of chiral spin texture phenomenology remain to be elucidated, including their domain wall structure, thermodynamic stability, and morphol…
Recently, it has been known that the hidden Rashba (R-2) effect in two-dimensional materials gives rise to a novel physical phenomenon called spin-layer locking (SLL). However, not only has its underlying fundamental mechanism been unclear, but also there are only a few materials exhibiting weak SLL. Here, through the first-principles density functional theory and model Hamiltonian calculation, we reveal that the R-2 SLL can be determined by the competition between the sublayer-sublayer interaction and the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which is related to the Rashba strength. In addition, the orb…
We propose a mechanism of intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE). In this mechanism, local orbital angular momentum (OAM) induces electron position shift and couples with the bias electric field to generate orbital Hall effect (OHE). SHE then emerges as a concomitant effect of OHE through the atomic spin-orbit coupling. Spin Hall conductivity due to this mechanism is estimated to be comparable to experimental values for heavy metals. This mechanism predicts the sign change of the spin Hall conductivity as the spin-orbit polarization changes its sign, and also correlation between the spin Hall conduc…
