In this work, we further develop multigoal-oriented a posteriori error estimation with two objectives in mind. First, we formulate goal-oriented mesh adaptivity for multiple functionals of interest for nonlinear problems in which both the Partial Differential Equation (PDE) and the goal functionals may be nonlinear. Our method is based on a posteriori error estimates in which the adjoint problem is used and a partition-of-unity is employed for the error localization that allows us to formulate the error estimator in the weak form.We provide a careful derivation of the primal and adjoint parts of the error estimator. The second objective is concerned with balancing the nonlinear iteration error with the discretization error yielding adaptive stopping rules for Newton's method. Our techniques are substantiated with several numerical examples including scalar PDEs and PDE systems, geometric singularities, and both nonlinear PDEs and nonlinear goal functionals. In these tests, up to six goal functionals are simultaneously controlled.
In this work, we consider multigoal-oriented error estimation for stationary fluid-structure interaction. The problem is formulated within a variational-monolithic setting using arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian coordinates. Employing the dual-weighted residual method for goal-oriented a posteriori error estimation, adjoint sensitivities are required. For multigoal-oriented error estimation, a combined functional is formulated such that several quantities of interest are controlled simultaneously. As localization technique for mesh refinement we employ a partition-of-unity. Our algorithmic develop…
Mathematical modeling and numerical multigoal-oriented a posteriori error control and adaptivity for a stationary, nonlinear, coupled flow temperature model with temperature dependent density
In this work, we develop a posteriori error control for a generalized Boussinesq model in which thermal conductivity and viscosity are temperature-dependent. Therein, the stationary Navier-Stokes equations are coupled with a stationary heat equation. The coupled problem is modeled and solved in a monolithic fashion. The focus is on multigoal-oriented error estimation with the dual-weighted residual method in which an adjoint problem is utilized to obtain sensitivity measures with respect to several goal functionals. The error localization is achieved with the help of a partition-of-unity in a …

Deep learning has shown successful application in visual recognition and certain artificial intelligence tasks. Deep learning is also considered as a powerful tool with high flexibility to approximate functions. In the present work, functions with desired properties are devised to approximate the solutions of PDEs. Our approach is based on a posteriori error estimation in which the adjoint problem is solved for the error localization to formulate an error estimator within the framework of neural network. An efficient and easy to implement algorithm is developed to obtain a posteriori error est…
In this work, we further develop multigoal-oriented a posteriori error estimation for the nonlinear, stationary, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. It is an extension of our previous work [B. Endtmayer, U. Langer, T. Wick: Two-side a posteriori error estimates for the DWR method, $SISC$, 2019, accepted]. We now focus on $h$ mesh refinement and $p$ enrichment for the error estimator. These advancements are demonstrated with the help of a numerical example
We consider the goal-oriented error estimates for a linearized iterative solver for nonlinear partial differential equations. For the adjoint problem and iterative solver we consider, instead of the differentiation of the primal problem, a suitable linearization which guarantees the adjoint consistency of the numerical scheme. We derive error estimates and develop an efficient adaptive algorithm which balances the errors arising from the discretization and use of iterative solvers. Several numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency of this algorithm.
In this article, goal-oriented a posteriori error estimation for the biharmonic plate bending problem is considered. The error for approximation of goal functional is represented by an estimator which combines dual-weighted residual method and equilibrated moment tensor. An abstract unified framework for the goal-oriented a posteriori error estimation is derived. In particular, $C^0$ interior penalty and discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods are employed for practical realization. The abstract estimation is based on equilibrated moment tensor and potential reconstruction that provides …
We deal with the numerical solution of linear partial differential equations (PDEs) with focus on the goal-oriented error estimates including algebraic errors arising by an inaccurate solution of the corresponding algebraic systems. The goal-oriented error estimates require the solution of the primal as well as dual algebraic systems. We solve both systems simultaneously using the bi-conjugate gradient method which allows to control the algebraic errors of both systems. We develop a stopping criterion which is cheap to evaluate and guarantees that the estimation of the algebraic error is small…
In this work, we implement goal-oriented error control and spatial mesh adaptivity for stationary fluid-structure interaction. The a posteriori error estimator is realized using the dual-weighted residual method in which the adjoint equation arises. The fluid-structure interaction problem is formulated within a variational-monolithic framework using arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian coordinates. The overall problem is nonlinear and solved with Newton's method. We specifically consider the FSI-1 benchmark problem in which quantities of interest include the elastic beam displacements, drag, and lift…
We introduce a goal-oriented strategy for multiscale computations performed using the Multiscale Finite Element Method (MsFEM). In a previous work, we have shown how to use, in the MsFEM framework, the concept of Constitutive Relation Error (CRE) to obtain a guaranteed and fully computable a posteriori error estimate in the energy norm (as well as error indicators on various error sources). Here, the CRE concept is coupled with the solution of an adjoint problem to control the error and drive an adaptive procedure with respect to a given output of interest. Furthermore, a local and non-intrusi…
We consider an adaptive finite element method with arbitrary but fixed polynomial degree $p \ge 1$, where adaptivity is driven by an edge-based residual error estimator. Based on the modified maximum criterion from [Diening et al, Found. Comput. Math. 16, 2016], we propose a goal-oriented adaptive algorithm and prove that it is instance optimal. More precisely, the goal-error is bounded by the product of the total errors (being the sum of energy error plus data oscillations) of the primal and the dual problem, and the proposed algorithm is instance optimal with respect to this upper bound. Num…
This paper develops a general methodology for a posteriori error estimation in time-dependent multiphysics numerical simulations. The methodology builds upon the generalized-structure additive Runge--Kutta (GARK) approach to time integration. GARK provides a unified formulation of multimethods that simulate complex systems by applying different discretization formulas and/or different time steps to individual components of the system. We derive discrete GARK adjoints and analyze their time accuracy. Based on the adjoint method, we establish computable a posteriori identities for the impacts of…
For the first time we introduce an error estimator for the numerical approximation of the equations describing the dynamics of sea ice. The idea of the estimator is to identify different error contributions coming from spatial and temporal discretization as well as from the splitting in time of the ice momentum equations from further parts of the coupled system. The novelty of the error estimator lies in the consideration of the splitting error, which turns out to be dominant with increasing mesh resolution. Errors are measured in user specified functional outputs like the total sea ice extent…
We propose a goal-oriented mesh-adaptive algorithm for a finite element method stabilized via residual minimization on dual discontinuous-Galerkin norms. By solving a saddle-point problem, this residual minimization delivers a stable continuous approximation to the solution on each mesh instance and a residual projection onto a broken polynomial space, which is a robust error estimator to minimize the discrete energy norm via automatic mesh refinement. In this work, we propose and analyze a goal-oriented adaptive algorithm for this stable residual minimization. We solve the primal and adjoint …
We present goal-oriented a posteriori error estimates for the automatic variationally stable finite element (AVS FE) method for scalar-valued convection-diffusion problems. The AVS-FE method is a Petrov-Galerkin method in which the test space is broken, whereas the trial space consists of classical FE basis functions, e.g., C0 or Raviart Thomas functions. We employ the concept of optimal test functions of the discontinuous Petrov Galerkin (DPG) method by Demkowicz and Gopalakrishnan, leading to unconditionally stable FE approximations. Remarkably, by using C0 or Raviart Thomas trial spaces, th…
We show how a posteriori goal oriented error estimation can be used to efficiently solve the subproblems occurring in a Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm. In MPC, only an initial part of a computed solution is implemented as a feedback, which motivates grid refinement particularly tailored to this context. To this end, we present a truncated cost functional as objective for goal oriented adaptivity and prove under stabilizability assumptions that error indicators decay exponentially outside the support of this quantity. This leads to very efficient time and space discretizations for MPC…
In this work, a flexible higher-order space-time adaptive finite element approximation of convection-dominated transport with coupled fluid flow is developed and studied. Convection-dominated transport is a challenging subproblem in poromechanics in which coupled transport with flow, chemical reaction and mechanical response in porous media is considered. Key ingredients are the arbitrary degree discontinuous Galerkin time discretization of the primal and dual problems for the Dual Weighted Residual (DWR) approach, an a posteriori error estimation for the transport problem coupled with flow an…
Goal oriented error estimation and adaptive procedures are essential for the accurate and efficient evaluation of numerical simulations that involve complex domains. By locally improving the approximation quality we can solve expensive problems which could result intractable otherwise. Here, we present an error estimation technique for enriched finite element approximations that is based on an equilibrated recovery technique, which considers the stress intensity factor as the quantity of interest. The locally equilibrated superconvergent patch recovery is used to obtain enhanced stress fields …
We deal with the numerical solution of the compressible Euler equations with the aid of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method with focus on the goal-oriented error estimates and adaptivity. We analyze the adjoint consistency of the DG scheme where the dual problem is not formulated by the differentiation of the DG form and the target functional but using a suitable linearization of the nonlinear forms. Further, we present the goal-oriented anisotropic $hp$-mesh adaptation technique for the Euler equations. The theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments.
During the last decade there has been an increase on the use of goal-oriented error estimates which help to quantify and control the local error on a quantity of interest (QoI) that might result relevant for design purposes (e.g. the mean stress or mean displacement in a particular area, the stress intensity factor for fracture problems,...). Residual-based error estimators have been used to estimate the error in quantities of interest for finite element approximations. This work presents a recovery-based error estimation technique for QoI whose main characteristic is the use of an enhanced ve…
In this work, a Bayesian model calibration framework is presented that utilizes goal-oriented a-posterior error estimates in quantities of interest (QoIs) for classes of high-fidelity models characterized by PDEs. It is shown that for a large class of computational models, it is possible to develop a computationally inexpensive procedure for calibrating parameters of high-fidelity models of physical events when the parameters of low-fidelity (surrogate) models are known with acceptable accuracy. The main ingredients in the proposed model calibration scheme are goal-oriented a-posteriori estima…

In this work, the dual-weighted residual method is applied to a space-time formulation of nonstationary Stokes and Navier-Stokes flow. Tensor-product space-time finite elements are being used to discretize the variational formulation with discontinuous Galerkin finite elements in time and inf-sup stable Taylor-Hood finite element pairs in space. To estimate the error in a quantity of interest and drive adaptive refinement in time and space, we demonstrate how the dual-weighted residual method for incompressible flow can be extended to a partition of unity based error localization. We derive th…
In this work, we are concerned with neural network guided goal-oriented a posteriori error estimation and adaptivity using the dual weighted residual method. The primal problem is solved using classical Galerkin finite elements. The adjoint problem is solved in strong form with a feedforward neural network using two or three hidden layers. The main objective of our approach is to explore alternatives for solving the adjoint problem with greater potential of a numerical cost reduction. The proposed algorithm is based on the general goal-oriented error estimation theorem including both linear an…

Given a partial differential equation (PDE), goal-oriented error estimation allows us to understand how errors in a diagnostic quantity of interest (QoI), or goal, occur and accumulate in a numerical approximation, for example using the finite element method. By decomposing the error estimates into contributions from individual elements, it is possible to formulate adaptation methods, which modify the mesh with the objective of minimising the resulting QoI error. However, the standard error estimate formulation involves the true adjoint solution, which is unknown in practice. As such, it is co…
