Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. The most common screening technology is mammography. To reduce the cost and workload of radiologists, we propose a computer aided detection approach for classifying and localizing calcifications and masses in mammogram images. To improve on conventional approaches, we apply deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) for automatic feature learning and classifier building. In computer-aided mammography, deep CNN classifiers cannot be trained directly on full mammogram images because of the loss of image details from resizing at input layers. Instead, our classifiers are trained on labelled image patches and then adapted to work on full mammogram images for localizing the abnormalities. State-of-the-art deep convolutional neural networks are compared on their performance of classifying the abnormalities. Experimental results indicate that VGGNet receives the best overall accuracy at 92.53\% in classifications. For localizing abnormalities, ResNet is selected for computing class activation maps because it is ready to be deployed without structural change or further training. Our approach demonstrates that deep convolutional neural network classifiers have remarkable localization capabilities despite no supervision on the location of abnormalities is provided.

Cluster of microcalcifications can be an early sign of breast cancer. In this paper we propose a novel approach based on convolutional neural networks for the detection and segmentation of microcalcification clusters. In this work we used 283 mammograms to train and validate our model, obtaining an accuracy of 98.22% in the detection of preliminary suspect regions and of 97.47% in the segmentation task. Our results show how deep learning could be an effective tool to effectively support radiologists during mammograms examination.

State-of-the-art deep learning methods for image processing are evolving into increasingly complex meta-architectures with a growing number of modules. Among them, region-based fully convolutional networks (R-FCN) and deformable convolutional nets (DCN) can improve CAD for mammography: R-FCN optimizes for speed and low consumption of memory, which is crucial for processing the high resolutions of to 50 micrometers used by radiologists. Deformable convolution and pooling can model a wide range of mammographic findings of different morphology and scales, thanks to their versatility. In this stud…
Chest X-Rays (CXRs) are widely used for diagnosing abnormalities in the heart and lung area. Automatically detecting these abnormalities with high accuracy could greatly enhance real world diagnosis processes. Lack of standard publicly available dataset and benchmark studies, however, makes it difficult to compare various detection methods. In order to overcome these difficulties, we have used a publicly available Indiana CXR, JSRT and Shenzhen dataset and studied the performance of known deep convolutional network (DCN) architectures on different abnormalities. We find that the same DCN archi…

Wireless Capsule Endoscopy is one of the most advanced non-invasive methods for the examination of gastrointestinal tracts. An intelligent computer-aided diagnostic system for detecting gastrointestinal abnormalities like polyp, bleeding, inflammation, etc. is highly exigent in wireless capsule endoscopy image analysis. Abnormalities greatly differ in their shape, size, color, and texture, and some appear to be visually similar to normal regions. This poses a challenge in designing a binary classifier due to intra-class variations. In this study, a hybrid convolutional neural network is propos…

We present a novel Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based approach for one class classification. The idea is to use a zero centered Gaussian noise in the latent space as the pseudo-negative class and train the network using the cross-entropy loss to learn a good representation as well as the decision boundary for the given class. A key feature of the proposed approach is that any pre-trained CNN can be used as the base network for one class classification. The proposed One Class CNN (OC-CNN) is evaluated on the UMDAA-02 Face, Abnormality-1001, FounderType-200 datasets. These datasets are rel…

We investigate the addition of symmetry and temporal context information to a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with the purpose of detecting malignant soft tissue lesions in mammography. We employ a simple linear mapping that takes the location of a mass candidate and maps it to either the contra-lateral or prior mammogram and Regions Of Interest (ROI) are extracted around each location. We subsequently explore two different architectures (1) a fusion model employing two datastreams were both ROIs are fed to the network during training and testing and (2) a stage-wise approach where a s…

This paper introduces MuRAD (Musculoskeletal Radiograph Abnormality Detection tool), a tool that can help radiologists automate the detection of abnormalities in musculoskeletal radiographs (bone X-rays). MuRAD utilizes a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that can accurately predict whether a bone X-ray is abnormal, and leverages Class Activation Map (CAM) to localize the abnormality in the image. MuRAD achieves an F1 score of 0.822 and a Cohen's kappa of 0.699, which is comparable to the performance of expert radiologists.

Some recent studies have described deep convolutional neural networks to diagnose breast cancer in mammograms with similar or even superior performance to that of human experts. One of the best techniques does two transfer learnings: the first uses a model trained on natural images to create a "patch classifier" that categorizes small subimages; the second uses the patch classifier to scan the whole mammogram and create the "single-view whole-image classifier". We propose to make a third transfer learning to obtain a "two-view classifier" to use the two mammographic views: bilateral craniocaud…

Early detection of breast cancer in mammography screening via deep-learning based computer-aided detection systems shows promising potential in improving the curability and mortality rates of breast cancer. However, many clinical centres are restricted in the amount and heterogeneity of available data to train such models to (i) achieve promising performance and to (ii) generalise well across acquisition protocols and domains. As sharing data between centres is restricted due to patient privacy concerns, we propose a potential solution: sharing trained generative models between centres as subs…

Automatic identification of patients with luminal and non-luminal subtypes during a routine mammography screening can support clinicians in streamlining breast cancer therapy planning. Recent machine learning techniques have shown promising results in molecular subtype classification in mammography; however, they are highly dependent on pixel-level annotations, handcrafted, and radiomic features. In this work, we provide initial insights into the luminal subtype classification in full mammogram images trained using only image-level labels. Transfer learning is applied from a breast abnormality…

The lack of pixel-level ground truths have especially limited segmentation methods in pushing beyond approximately bounding regions. We propose a classification approach grounded in high performance tissue assessment as an alternative to all-in-one localization and assessment models that is also capable of pinpointing the causal pixels. Early detection of breast cancer can increase treatment efficiency. Architectural Distortion (AD) is a very subtle contraction of the breast tissue and may represent the earliest sign of cancer. Since it is very likely to be unnoticed by radiologists, several approaches have been proposed over the years but none using deep learning techniques. To train a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which is a deep neural architecture, is necessary a huge amount of data. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a data augmentation approach applied to clinical image dataset to properly train a CNN. …

Early detection of breast cancer has a major contribution to curability, and using mammographic images, this can be achieved non-invasively. Supervised deep learning, the dominant CADe tool currently, has played a great role in object detection in computer vision, but it suffers from a limiting property: the need of a large amount of labelled data. This becomes stricter when it comes to medical datasets which require high-cost and time-consuming annotations. Furthermore, medical datasets are usually imbalanced, a condition that often hinders classifiers performance. The aim of this paper is to…

Anomaly detection (AD) in a surveillance scenario is an emerging and challenging field of research. For autonomous vehicles like drones or cars, it is immensely important to distinguish between normal and abnormal states in real-time. Additionally, we also need to detect any device malfunction. But the nature and degree of abnormality may vary depending upon the actual environment and adversary. As a result, it is impractical to model all cases a-priori and use supervised methods to classify. Also, an autonomous vehicle provides various data types like images and other analog or digital sensor…
Mammography is the most widely used method to screen breast cancer. Because of its mostly manual nature, variability in mass appearance, and low signal-to-noise ratio, a significant number of breast masses are missed or misdiagnosed. In this work, we present how Convolutional Neural Networks can be used to directly classify pre-segmented breast masses in mammograms as benign or malignant, using a combination of transfer learning, careful pre-processing and data augmentation to overcome limited training data. We achieve state-of-the-art results on the DDSM dataset, surpassing human performance,…

This paper proposes a novel approach based on conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGAN) for breast mass segmentation in mammography. We hypothesized that the cGAN structure is well-suited to accurately outline the mass area, especially when the training data is limited. The generative network learns intrinsic features of tumors while the adversarial network enforces segmentations to be similar to the ground truth. Experiments performed on dozens of malignant tumors extracted from the public DDSM dataset and from our in-house private dataset confirm our hypothesis with very high Dice c…

Automated methods for breast cancer detection have focused on 2D mammography and have largely ignored 3D digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), which is frequently used in clinical practice.
