For most deep learning practitioners, sequence modeling is synonymous with recurrent networks. Yet recent results indicate that convolutional architectures can outperform recurrent networks on tasks such as audio synthesis and machine translation. Given a new sequence modeling task or dataset, which architecture should one use? We conduct a systematic evaluation of generic convolutional and recurrent architectures for sequence modeling. The models are evaluated across a broad range of standard tasks that are commonly used to benchmark recurrent networks. Our results indicate that a simple convolutional architecture outperforms canonical recurrent networks such as LSTMs across a diverse range of tasks and datasets, while demonstrating longer effective memory. We conclude that the common association between sequence modeling and recurrent networks should be reconsidered, and convolutional networks should be regarded as a natural starting point for sequence modeling tasks. To assist related work, we have made code available at http://github.com/locuslab/TCN .
Neural Machine Translation model is a sequence-to-sequence converter based on neural networks. Existing models use recurrent neural networks to construct both the encoder and decoder modules. In alternative research, the recurrent networks were substituted by convolutional neural networks for capturing the syntactic structure in the input sentence and decreasing the processing time. We incorporate the goodness of both approaches by proposing a convolutional-recurrent encoder for capturing the context information as well as the sequential information from the source sentence. Word embedding and…

Recent approaches based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) have shown promising results for short-text classification. However, many short texts occur in sequences (e.g., sentences in a document or utterances in a dialog), and most existing ANN-based systems do not leverage the preceding short texts when classifying a subsequent one. In this work, we present a model based on recurrent neural networks and convolutional neural networks that incorporates the preceding short texts. Our model achieves state-of-the-art results on three different datasets for dialog act prediction.

Traffic forecasting is one of the most fundamental problems in transportation science and artificial intelligence. Existing methods, however, cannot accurately model both long-term and short-term temporal correlations simultaneously, limiting their expressive power on complex spatial-temporal patterns. In this paper, we propose a novel spatial-temporal neural network framework: Attention-based Spatial-Temporal Graph Convolutional Recurrent Network (ASTGCRN), which consists o…
In this paper, we introduce Channel-wise recurrent convolutional neural networks (RecNets), a family of novel, compact neural network architectures for computer vision tasks inspired by recurrent neural networks (RNNs). RecNets build upon Channel-wise recurrent convolutional (CRC) layers, a novel type of convolutional layer that splits the input channels into disjoint segments and processes them in a recurrent fashion. In this way, we simulate wide, yet compact models, since the number of parameters is vastly reduced via the parameter sharing of the RNN formulation. Experimental results on the…
We propose an end-to-end model based on convolutional and recurrent neural networks for speech enhancement. Our model is purely data-driven and does not make any assumptions about the type or the stationarity of the noise. In contrast to existing methods that use multilayer perceptrons (MLPs), we employ both convolutional and recurrent neural network architectures. Thus, our approach allows us to exploit local structures in both the frequency and temporal domains. By incorporating prior knowledge of speech signals into the design of model structures, we build a model that is more data-efficien…
Recurrent neural networks are extremely powerful yet hard to train. One of their issues is the vanishing gradient problem, whereby propagation of training signals may be exponentially attenuated, freezing training. Use of orthogonal or unitary matrices, whose powers neither explode nor decay, has been proposed to mitigate this issue, but their computational expense has hindered their use. Here we show that in the specific case of convolutional RNNs, we can define a convolutional exponential and that this operation transforms antisymmetric or anti-Hermitian convolution kernels into orthogonal o…
