Dynamical systems can be modelled by partial differential equations and numerical computations are used everywhere in science and engineering. In this work, we investigate the performance of recurrent and convolutional deep neural network architectures to predict the surface waves. The system is governed by the Saint-Venant equations. We improve on the long-term prediction over previous methods while keeping the inference time at a fraction of numerical simulations. We also show that convolutional networks perform at least as well as recurrent networks in this task. Finally, we assess the generalisation capability of each network by extrapolating in longer time-frames and in different physical settings.

Bedside monitors in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) frequently sound incorrectly, slowing response times and desensitising nurses to alarms (Chambrin, 2001), causing true alarms to be missed (Hug et al., 2011). We compare sliding window predictors with recurrent predictors to classify patient state-of-health from ICU multivariate time series; we report slightly improved performance for the RNN for three out of four targets.

Ambiguity is inherently present in many machine learning tasks, but especially for sequential models seldom accounted for, as most only output a single prediction. In this work we propose an extension of the Multiple Hypothesis Prediction (MHP) model to handle ambiguous predictions with sequential data, which is of special importance, as often multiple futures are equally likely. Our approach can be applied to the most common recurrent architectures and can be used with any loss function. Additionally, we introduce a novel metric for ambiguous problems, which is better suited to account for un…

Electricity consumption has increased exponentially during the past few decades. This increase is heavily burdening the electricity distributors. Therefore, predicting the future demand for electricity consumption will provide an upper hand to the electricity distributor. Predicting electricity consumption requires many parameters. The paper presents two approaches with one using a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) and another one using a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) network, which only considers the previous electricity consumption to predict the future electricity consumption. These models wer…

In this paper, we present an effective deep prediction framework based on robust recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to predict the likely therapeutic classes of medications a patient is taking, given a sequence of diagnostic billing codes in their record. Accurately capturing the list of medications currently taken by a given patient is extremely challenging due to undefined errors and omissions. We present a general robust framework that explicitly models the possible contamination through overtime decay mechanism on the input billing codes and noise injection into the recurrent hidden states, …
Our project probes the relationship between temperatures and the blossom date of cherry trees. Through modeling, future flowering will become predictive, helping the public plan travels and avoid pollen season. To predict the date when the cherry trees will blossom exactly could be viewed as a multiclass classification problem, so we applied the multi-class Support Vector Classifier (SVC) and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), particularly Long Short-term Memory (LSTM), to formulate the problem. In the end, we evaluate and compare the performance of these approaches to find out which one might be…

Given the complexity and nonlinearity of weather data, a recurrent neural network (RNN) could be beneficial in modeling hurricane behavior. We propose the application of a fully connected RNN to predict the trajectory of hurricanes. We employed the RNN over a fine grid to reduce typical …

Encouraged by the success of deep learning in a variety of domains, we investigate the suitability and effectiveness of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) in a domain where deep learning has not yet been used; namely detecting confusion from eye-tracking data. Through experiments with a dataset of user interactions with ValueChart (an interactive visualization tool), we found that RNNs learn a feature representation from the raw data that allows for a more powerful classifier than previous methods that use engineered features. This is evidenced by the stronger performance of the RNN (0.74/0.71 s…

Several brain disorders can be detected by observing alterations in the brain's structural and functional connectivities. Neurological findings suggest that early diagnosis of brain disorders, such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), can prevent and even reverse its development into Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this context, recent studies aimed to predict the evolution of brain connectivities over time by proposing machine learning models that work on brain images. However, such an approach is costly and time-consuming. Here, we propose to use brain connectivities as a more efficient alternat…

ACT adapts to the input sequence by being able to look at each sample more than once, and learn how many times it should do it. In this paper, we compare ACT to Repeat-RNN, a novel architecture based on repeating each sample a fixed number of times. We found surprising results, where Repeat-RNN performs as good as ACT in the selected tasks. Recurrent neural networks are nowadays successfully used in an abundance of applications, going from text, speech and image processing to recommender systems. Backpropagation through time is the algorithm that is commonly used to train these networks on specific tasks. Many deep learning frameworks have their own implementation of training and sampling procedures for recurrent neural networks, while there are in fact multiple other possibilities to choose from and other parameters to tune. In existing literature this is very often overlooked or ignored. In this paper we therefore give an overv…

The size of a website's active user base directly affects its value. Thus, it is important to monitor and influence a user's likelihood to return to a site. Essential to this is predicting when a user will return. Current state of the art approaches to solve this problem come in two flavors: (1) Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based solutions and (2) survival analysis methods. We observe that both techniques are severely limited when applied to this problem. Survival models can only incorporate aggregate representations of users instead of automatically learning a representation directly from a…

We consider the problem of estimating the remaining useful life (RUL) of a system or a machine from sensor data. Normalization techniques have only recently begun to be exploited in supervised learning tasks. Batch normalization exploits mini-batch statistics to normalize the activations. This was shown to speed up training and result in better models. However its success has been very limited when dealing with recurrent neural networks. On the other hand, layer normalization normalizes the activations across all activities within a layer. This was shown to work well in the recurrent setting. In this paper we propose a unified view of normalization techniques, as forms of divisive normalization, which in…

Recurrent neural networks are used to forecast time series in finance, climate, language, and from many other domains. We explore the inherent limitations of finite-past memory traces in this intriguing proposal. A lower bound from Fano's inequality shows that, on highly non-Markovian processes generated by large probabilistic state machines, next-generation reservoi…

We point out equivalences between elements of the two frameworks. By complementing what is missing from one framework comparing to the other, we introduce a more advanced imitation learning framework that, on one hand, augments L2S s notion of search space and, on the other hand, enhances RNNs training procedure to be more robust to compounding errors arising from training on highly correlated examples.
