We present a method to map the evolution of photonic random walks that is compatible with nonclassical input light. Our approach leverages a newly developed flexible waveguide platform to tune the jumping rate between spatial modes, allowing the observation of a range of evolution times in a chip of fixed length. In a proof-of-principle demonstration we reconstruct the evolution of photons through a uniform array of coupled waveguides by monitoring the end-face alone. This approach enables direct observation of mode occupancy at arbitrary resolution, extending the utility of photonic random walks for quantum simulations and related applications.
Here, a new two-dimensional process, discrete in time and space, that yields the results of both a random walk and a quantum random walk, is introduced. This model describes the population distribution of four coin states |1>,-|1>, |0> -|0> in space without interference, instead of two coin states |1>, |0> .For the case of no boundary conditions, the model is similar to a Markov chain with a stochastic matrix, i.e., it conserves the population distribution of the four coin states, and by using a proper transformation, yield probability distributions of the two quantum states |1>, |0> in space,…
A new model that maps a quantum random walk described by a Hadamard operator to a particular case of a random walk is presented. The model is represented by a Markov chain with a stochastic matrix, i.e., all the transition rates are positive, although the Hadamard operator contains negative entries. Using a proper transformation that is applied to the random walk distribution after n steps, the probability distributions in space of the two quantum states |1>, |0> are revealed. These show that a quantum walk can be entirely mapped to a particular case of a higher dimension of a random walk mode…
We clarify that coined quantum walk is determined by only the choice of local quantum coins. To do so, we characterize coined quantum walks on graph by disjoint Euler circles with respect to symmetric arcs. In this paper, we introduce a new class of coined quantum walk by a special choice of quantum coins determined by corresponding quantum graph, called quantum graph walk. We show that a stationary state of quantum graph walk describes the eigenfunction of the quantum graph.
The conventional spectral mapping theorem for quantum walks can only be applied for walks employing a shift operator whose square is the identity. This theorem gives most of the eigenvalues of the time evolution $U$ by lifting the eigenvalues of an induced self-adjoint matrix $T$ onto the unit circle on the complex plane. We acquire a new spectral mapping theorem for the Grover walk with a shift operator whose cube is the identity on finite graphs. Moreover, graphs we can consider for a quantum walk with such a shift operator is characterized by a triangulation. We call these graphs triangulab…
We discuss the description of eigenspace of a quantum walk model $U$ with an associating linear operator $T$ in abstract settings of quantum walk including the Szegedy walk on graphs. In particular, we provide the spectral mapping theorem of $U$ without the spectral decomposition of $T$. Arguments in this direction reveal the eigenspaces of $U$ characterized by the generalized kernels of linear operators given by $T$.
Quantum transport properties of electron systems driven by strong electric fields are studied by mapping the Landau-Zener transition dynamics to a quantum walk on a semi-infinite one-dimensional lattice with a reflecting boundary, where the sites correspond to energy levels and the boundary the ground state. Quantum interference induces a distribution localized around the ground state, and when the electric field is strengthened, a delocalization transition occurs describing breakdown of the original electron system.
A new model maps a quantum random walk described by a Hadamard operator to a particular case of a birth and death process. The model is represented by a 2D Markov chain with a stochastic matrix, i.e., all the transition rates are positive, although the Hadamard operator contains negative entries (this is possible by increasing the dimensionality of the system). The probability distribution of the walker population is preserved using the Markovian property. By applying a proper transformation to the population distribution of the random walk, the probability distributions of the quantum states …
Based on a relationship with continuous-time random walks discovered by Iglói, Turban, and Rieger [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 59}, 1465 (1999)], we derive exact lower and upper bounds on the lowest energy gap of open transverse-field Ising chains, which are explicit in the parameters and are generally valid for arbitrary sets of possibly random couplings and fields. In the homogeneous chain and in the random chain with uncorrelated parameters, both the lower and upper bounds are found to show the same finite-size scaling in the ferromagnetic phase and at the critical point, demonstrating the ability of…
We propose an optical cavity implementation of the two-dimensional coined quantum walk on the line. The implementation makes use of only classical resources, and is tunable in the sense that a large number of different unitary transformations can be implemented by tuning some parameters of the device.
The expected hitting time of discrete quantum walks on a hypercube (HC) is numerically known to be exponentially shorter than that of their classical analogs in terms of the scaling with the HC dimension. Recent numerical analyses illustrated that this scaling exists not only on the bare HC, but also when the HC graph is symmetrically and locally embedded into larger graphs. The present work investigates the necessity of symmetry and locality for the speed-up by considering embeddings that are nonsymmetric or nonlocal. We provide numerical evidence that the exponential speed-up survives also i…
The circuit-to-Hamiltonian construction has found widespread use within the field of Hamiltonian complexity, particularly for proving QMA-hardness results. In this work we examine the ground state energies of the Hamiltonian for standard clock constructions and those which require dynamic initialisation. We put exponentially tight bounds on these ground state energies and also determine improved scaling bounds in the case where there is a constant probability of the computation being rejected. Furthermore, we prove a collection of results concerning the low-energy subspace of quantum walks on …
Quantum walks play an important role for developing quantum algorithms and quantum simulations. Here we present one dimensional three-state quantum walk(lazy quantum walk) and show its equivalence for circuit realization in ternary quantum logic for the first of its kind. Using an appropriate logical mapping of the position space on which a walker evolves onto the multi-qutrit states, we present efficient quantum circuits considering the nearest neighbour position space for the implementation of lazy quantum walks in one-dimensional position space in ternary quantum system. We also address sca…
The physics of quantum walks on graphs is formulated in Hamiltonian language, both for simple quantum walks and for composite walks, where extra discrete degrees of freedom live at each node of the graph. It is shown how to map between quantum walk Hamiltonians and Hamiltonians for qubit systems and quantum circuits; this is done for both a single- and multi-excitation coding, and for more general mappings. Specific examples of spin chains, as well as static and dynamic systems of qubits, are mapped to quantum walks, and walks on hyperlattices and hypercubes are mapped to various gate systems.…
Quantum walks are a promising framework for developing quantum algorithms and quantum simulations. They represent an important test case for the application of quantum computers. Here we present different forms of discrete-time quantum walks (DTQWs) and show their equivalence for physical realizations. Using an appropriate digital mapping of the position space on which a walker evolves to the multiqubit states of a quantum processor, we present different configurations of quantum circuits for the implementation of DTQWs in one-dimensional position space. We provide example circuits for a five-…
Quantum walks are processes that model dynamics in coherent systems. Their experimental implementations proved key to unveil novel phenomena in Floquet topological insulators. Here we realize a photonic quantum walk in the presence of a synthetic gauge field, which mimics the action of an electric field on a charged particle. By tuning the energy gaps between the two quasi-energy bands, we investigate intriguing system dynamics characterized by the interplay between Bloch oscillations and Landau-Zener transitions. When both gaps at quasi-energy values 0 and $π$ are vanishingly small, the Floqu…
We present a protocol to implement discrete-time quantum walks and simulate topological insulator phases in cavity-based quantum networks, where the single photon is the quantum walker and the cavity input-output process is employed to realize the state-dependent translation operation. Different topological phases can be simulated through tuning the single-photon polarization rotation angles. We show that both the topological boundary states and topological phase transitions can be directly observed via measuring the final photonic density distribution. Moreover, we also demonstrate that these…
The quantum walk formalism is a widely used and highly successful framework for modeling quantum systems, such as simulations of the Dirac equation, different dynamics in both the low and high energy regime, and for developing a wide range of quantum algorithms. Here we present the circuit-based implementation of a discrete-time quantum walk in position space on a five-qubit trapped-ion quantum processor. We encode the space of walker positions in particular multi-qubit states and program the system to operate with different quantum walk parameters, experimentally realizing a Dirac cellular au…
We make and generalize the observation that summing of probability amplitudes of a discrete-time quantum walk over partitions of the walking graph consistent with the step operator results in a unitary evolution on the reduced graph which is also a quantum walk. Since the effective walking graph of the projected walk is not necessarily simpler than the original, this may bring new insights into the dynamics of some kinds of quantum walks using known results from thoroughly studied cases like Euclidean lattices. We use abstract treatment of the walking space and walker displacements in aim for …
By adding an extra Hilbert space to Hadamard Quantum Walk on Cycles (QWC), we presented a new type of QWCs called Möbius Quantum Walk (MQW). The new space configuration enables the particle to rotate around the axis of movement. We defined factor $α$ as the Möbius factor which is number of rotations per cycle. So by $α=0$ we have normal QWC, while $α\neq 0$ defines new type of QWC (namely Möbius Quantum Walk). Specially $α= \frac{1}{2}$ defines a structure similar to Möbius strip. We analytically investigated this new type of QW and found that by tuning the parameter $α$ we can reach uniform d…
Quantum walk (QW) is the quantum analog of the random walk. QW is an integral part of the development of numerous quantum algorithms. Hence, an in-depth understanding of QW helps us to grasp the quantum algorithms. We revisit the one-dimensional discrete-time QW and discuss basic steps in detail by incorporating the most general coin operator. We investigate the impact of each parameter of the general coin operator on the probability distribution of the quantum walker. We show that by tuning the parameters of the general coin, one can regulate the probability distribution of the walker. We pro…
This paper investigates continuous-time quantum walks on directed bipartite graphs based on a graph's adjacency matrix. We prove that on bipartite graphs, probability transport between the two node partitions can be completely suppressed by tuning a model parameter $α$. We provide analytic solutions to the quantum walks for the star and circulant graph classes that are valid for an arbitrary value of the number of nodes $N$, time $t$ and the model parameter $α$. We discuss quantitative and qualitative aspects of quantum walks based on directed graphs and their undirected counterparts. Numerica…
Quantum walks have by now been realized in a large variety of different physical settings. In some of these, particularly with trapped ions, the walk is implemented in phase space, where the corresponding position states are not orthogonal. We develop a general description of such a quantum walk and show how to map it into a standard one with orthogonal states, thereby making available all the tools developed for the latter. This enables a variety of experiments, which can be implemented with smaller step sizes and more steps. Tuning the non-orthogonality allows for an easy preparation of exte…
We define a quaternionic extension of the Szegedy walk on a graph and study its right spectral properties. The condition for the transition matrix of the quaternionic Szegedy walk on a graph to be quaternionic unitary is given. In order to derive the spectral mapping theorem for the quaternionic Szegedy walk, we derive a quaternionic extension of the determinant expression of the second weighted zeta function of a graph. Our main results determine explicitly all the right eigenvalues of the quaternionic Szegedy walk by using complex right eigenvalues of the corresponding doubly weighted matrix…
The development of quantum walks in the context of quantum computation, as generalisations of random walk techniques, led rapidly to several new quantum algorithms. These all follow unitary quantum evolution, apart from the final measurement. Since logical qubits in a quantum computer must be protected from decoherence by error correction, there is no need to consider decoherence at the level of algorithms. Nonetheless, enlarging the range of quantum dynamics to include non-unitary evolution provides a wider range of possibilities for tuning the properties of quantum walks. For example, small …
In this paper, we determine periodicity of quantum walks defined by mixed paths and mixed cycles. By the spectral mapping theorem of quantum walks, consideration of periodicity is reduced to eigenvalue analysis of $η$-Hermitian adjacency matrices. First, we investigate coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of $η$-Hermitian adjacency matrices. We show that the characteristic polynomials of mixed trees and their underlying graphs are same. We also define $n+1$ types of mixed cycles and show that every mixed cycle is switching equivalent to one of them. We use these results to discuss pe…
We address the dynamics of continuous-time quantum walks on one-dimensional disordered lattices inducing dynamical noise in the system. Noise is described as time-dependent fluctuations of the tunneling amplitudes between adjacent sites, and attention is focused on non-Gaussian telegraph noise, going beyond the usual assumption of fast Gaussian noise. We observe the emergence of two different dynamical behaviors for the walker, corresponding to two opposite noise regimes: slow noise (i.e. strong coupling with the environment) confines the walker into few lattice nodes, while fast noise (weak c…
A quantum master equation of the Lindblad form is obtained in this paper by considering the spontaneous wave-packet reduction. Different classical equations can be derived after exactly mapping such a quantum master equation to a continuous time random walk (CTRW). Although this CTRW is a quasiclassical walk, the effects due to the quantum interference can still be important in such a walk. Macroscopically, we shall consider the uncertainty of the potential and determine the effective transition probability by a family of Schrödinger equations (or operators).
We simulate various topological phenomena in condense matter, such as formation of different topological phases, boundary and edge states, through two types of quantum walk with step-dependent coins. Particularly, we show that one-dimensional quantum walk with step-dependent coin simulates all types of topological phases in BDI family, as well as all types of boundary and edge states. In addition, we show that step-dependent coins provide the number of steps as a controlling factor over the simulations. In fact, with tuning number of steps, we can determine the occurrences of boundary, edge st…
The two major discrete time formulations for quantum walks, coined and scattering, are unitarily equivalent for arbitrary position dependent transition amplitudes and any topology (PRA {\bf 80}, 052301 (2009)). Although the proof explicit describes the mapping obtention, its high technicality may hinder relevant physical aspects involved in the equivalence. Discussing concrete examples -- the most general constructions for the line, square and honeycomb lattices -- here we unveil the similarities and differences of these two versions of quantum walks. We moreover show how to derive the dynamic…
