This paper investigates continuous-time quantum walks on directed bipartite graphs based on a graph's adjacency matrix. We prove that on bipartite graphs, probability transport between the two node partitions can be completely suppressed by tuning a model parameter $α$. We provide analytic solutions to the quantum walks for the star and circulant graph classes that are valid for an arbitrary value of the number of nodes $N$, time $t$ and the model parameter $α$. We discuss quantitative and qualitative aspects of quantum walks based on directed graphs and their undirected counterparts. Numerical simulations of quantum walks on circulant graphs show complex interference phenomena and how complete suppression of transport is achieved near $α=π/2$. By proving two mirror symmetries around $α=0$ and $π/2$ we show that these quantum walks have a period of $π$ in $α$. We show that undirected edges lose their effect on the quantum walk at $α=π/2$ and present non-bipartite graphs that exhibit suppression of transport. Finally, we analytically compute the Hamiltonians of quantum walks on the directed ring graph.

A distinguishability operator is defined for the continuous-time quantum walk (CTQW) of a bipartite quantum walker on two simply connected graphs, $W_{G_i,G_j} = U_{G_i}\left(t\right) \otimes U_{G_j}\left(t'\right) - U_{G_j}\left(t'\right) \otimes U_{G_i}\left(t\right)$, where $U_{G_i}\left(t\right)$ is the unitary CTQW operator for a labeled graph $G_i$ over a time interval $t$. The null space of $W_{G_i,G_j}$ defines the vector space of initial bipartite states whose time development is either constant or only dependent on $t + t'$ and is invariant to which quantum walker subsystem goes with…
We investigate coherent control of single particles held in a bipartite optical lattice via a combined high-frequency modulation. Our analytical results show that for the photon resonance case the quantum tunneling and dynamical localization depend on the phase difference between the modulation components, which leads to a different route of the coherent destruction of tunneling and a simple method for stabilizing the system to implement the directed transport. The results could be referable for manipulating the transport characterization of the similar tilted and shaken optical or solid-state…
In this paper, we introduce a discrete quantum walk model called bipartite walks. Bipartite walks include many known discrete quantum walk models, like arc-reversal walks, vertex-face walks. For the transition matrix of a quantum walk, there is a Hamiltonian associated with it. We will study the Hamiltonians of the bipartite walks. Let $S$ be a skew-symmetric matrix. We are mainly interested in the Hamiltonians of the form $iS$. We show that the Hamiltonian can be written as $iS$ if and only if the adjacency matrix of the bipartite graph is invertible. We show that arc-reversal walks and verte…
We consider the definition of quantum walks on directed graphs. Call a directed graph reversible if, for each pair of vertices (i, j), if i is connected to j then there is a path from j to i. We show that reversibility is a necessary and sufficient condition for a directed graph to allow the notion of a discrete-time quantum walk, and discuss some implications of this condition. We present a method for defining a "partially quantum" walk on directed graphs that are not reversible.
We consider a quantum walk with two marked vertices, sender and receiver, and analyze its application to perfect state transfer on complete bipartite graphs. First, the situation with both the sender and the receiver vertex in the same part of the graph is considered. We show that in this case the dynamics of the quantum walk is independent of the size of the second part and reduces to the one for the star graph where perfect state transfer is achieved. Second, we consider the situation where the sender and the receiver vertex are in the opposite parts of the graph. In such a case the state tr…
We give the first example of faster transport with a quantum walk on an inherently directed graph, on the directed line with a variable number of self-loops at each vertex. These self-loops can be thought of as adding a number of small dimensions. This is a discrete time quantum walk using the Fourier transform coin, where the walk proceeds a distance $Θ(1)$ in constant time compared to $Θ(1/n)$ classically, independent of the number of these small dimensions. The analysis proceeds by reducing this walk to a walk with a two dimensional coin.
In this paper we study a class of discrete quantum walks, known as bipartite walks. These include the well-known Grover's walks. Any discrete quantum walk is given by the powers of a unitary matrix $U$ indexed by arcs or edges of the underlying graph. The walk is periodic if $U^k=I$ for some positive integer $k$. Kubota has given a characterization of periodicity of Grover's walk when the walk is defined on a regular bipartite graph with at most five eigenvalues. We extend Kubota's results--if a biregular graph $G$ has eigenvalues whose squares are algebraic integers with degree at most two, w…
We obtained analytical expressions considering a directed continuous-time quantum walk on a directed infinite line using Bessel functions, expanding previous results in the literature, for a general initial condition. We derive the equation for the probability distribution, and show how to recover normal and enhanced decay rates for the survival probability by adjusting the phase factor of the direction of the graph. Our result shows that the mean and standard deviation for a specific non-local initial condition does not depend on the direction.
We determine connected bipartite regular graphs with four distinct adjacency eigenvalues that induce periodic Grover walks, and show that it is only $C_6$. We also show that there are only three kinds of the second largest eigenvalues of bipartite regular periodic graphs with five distinct eigenvalues. Using walk-regularity, we enumerate feasible spectra for such graphs.
Various quantum-walk based algorithms have been proposed to analyse and rank the centrality of graph vertices. However, issues arise when working with directed graphs --- the resulting non-Hermitian Hamiltonian leads to non-unitary dynamics, and the total probability of the quantum walker is no longer conserved. In this paper, we discuss a method for simulating directed graphs using PT-symmetric quantum walks, allowing probability conserving non-unitary evolution. This method is equivalent to mapping the directed graph to an undirected, yet weighted, complete graph over the same vertex set, an…
The coined quantum walk is a discretization of the Dirac equation of relativistic quantum mechanics, and it is the basis of many quantum algorithms. We investigate how it searches the complete bipartite graph of $N$ vertices for one of $k$ marked vertices with different initial states. We prove intriguing dependence on the number of marked and unmarked vertices in each partite set. For example, when the graph is irregular and the initial state is the typical uniform superposition over the vertices, then the success probability can vary greatly from one timestep to the next, even alternating be…
We consider the random walk of spin-zero bipartite spins in the classicalized holographic tensor network of the ground state of a strongly coupled two-dimensional conformal field theory. The bipartite-spin distribution induces a metric in this network. In the steady state of the random walk, the induced metric gives the two-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS$_2$) space metric. We consider this distribution as a microscopic statistical model of the AdS$_2$ space metric.
The main results of our work is determining the differences between limiting properties in various models of quantum stochastic walks. In particular, we prove that in the case of strongly connected and a class of weakly connected directed graphs, local environment interaction evolution is relaxing, and in the case of undirected graphs, global environment interaction evolution is convergent. For other classes of directed graphs we show, that the character of connectivity large influence on the limiting properties. We also study the limiting properties for the non-moralizing global interaction c…
Quantum walks on graphs have shown prioritized benefits and applications in wide areas. In some scenarios, however, it may be more natural and accurate to mandate high-order relationships for hypergraphs, due to the density of information stored inherently. Therefore, we can explore the potential of quantum walks on hypergraphs. In this paper, by presenting the one-to-one correspondence between regular uniform hypergraphs and bipartite graphs, we construct a model for quantum walks on bipartite graphs of regular uniform hypergraphs with Szegedy's quantum walks, which gives rise to a quadratic …
In this paper we define a quantum stochastic walk on arbitrary directed graph with super-diffusive propagation on a line graph. Our model is based on global environment interaction QSW, which is known to have ballistic propagation. However we discovered, that in this case additional amplitude transitions occur, hence graph topology is changed into moral graph. Because of that we call the effect a spontaneous moralization. We propose a general correction scheme, which is proved to remove unnecessary transition and thus to preserve the graph topology. In the end we numerically show, that super-d…
We formalize the treatment of directed (or chiral) quantum walks using Hermitian adjacency matrices, bridging two developing fields of research in quantum information and spectral graph theory. We display results and simulations which highlight the conceptual differences between having directions encoded in the Hamiltonians or not. This leads to a construction of a new type of quantum phenomenon: zero transfer between pairs of sites in a connected coupled network, which is only possible in the directed model we study. Our main result is a description of several families of directed cycles that…
High-fidelity quantum state transfer is critical for quantum communication and scalable quantum computation. Current quantum state transfer algorithms on the complete bipartite graph, which are based on discrete-time quantum walk search algorithms, suffer from low fidelity in some cases. To solve this problem, in this paper we propose a two-stage quantum state transfer algorithm on the complete bipartite graph. The algorithm is achieved by the generalized Grover walk with one marked vertex. The generalized Grover walk's coin operators and the query oracles are both parametric unitary matrices,…
Previously it was shown that (almost) perfect state transfer can be achieved on the complete bipartite graph by a discrete-time coined quantum walk based algorithm when both the sender and receiver vertices are in the same partition of the graph and when the sender and receiver are in opposite partitions of the same size. By changing the coin operator, we analyze the state transfer problem and we show that it is still possible to achieve state transfer with high fidelity even when the sender and receiver are in different partitions with different sizes. Moreover, it is also possible to use an …
We consider the dynamical properties of dissipative continuous-time quantum walks on directed graphs. Using a large-deviation approach we construct a thermodynamic formalism allowing us to define a dynamical order parameter, and to identify transitions between dynamical regimes. For a particular class of dissipative quantum walks we propose a quantum generalization of the the classical PageRank vector, used to rank the importance of nodes in a directed graph. We also provide an example where one can characterize the dynamical transition from an effective classical random walk to a dissipative …
This is the second paper in a series of two. Using a multi-particle continuous-time quantum walk with two internal states, which has been formulated in the first paper (arXiv:2112.08119), we physically implement a quantum random access memory (qRAM). Data with address information are dual-rail encoded into quantum walkers. The walkers pass through perfect binary trees to access the designated memory cells and copy the data stored in the cells. A roundabout gate allocated at each node serves as a router to move the walker from the parent node to one of two child nodes, depending on the internal…
We study how quantum walks can be used to find structural anomalies in graphs via several examples. Two of our examples are based on star graphs, graphs with a single central vertex to which the other vertices, which we call external vertices, are connected by edges. In the basic star graph, these are the only edges. If we now connect a subset of the external vertices to form a complete subgraph, a quantum walk can be used to find these vertices with a quantum speedup. Thus, under some circumstances, a quantum walk can be used to locate where the connectivity of a network changes. We also look…
Quantum walks (QW) are of crucial importance in the development of quantum information processing algorithms. Recently, several quantum algorithms have been proposed to implement network analysis, in particular to rank the centrality of nodes in networks represented by graphs. Employing QW in centrality ranking is advantageous comparing to certain widely used classical algorithms (e.g. PageRank) because QW approach can lift the vertex rank degeneracy in certain graphs. However, it is challenging to implement a directed graph via QW, since it corresponds to a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and thus …
In this work we introduce, test and discuss three quantum methods for computing hub and authority centrality scores in directed networks. The methods are based on unitary, continuous-time quantum walks; the construction of a suitable Hermitian Hamiltonian is achieved by performing a quantum walk on the associated bipartite graph. Two methods, called CQAu and CQAw, use the same evolution operator, inspired by the classical HITS algorithm, but with different initial states; the computation of hub and authority scores is performed simultaneously. The third method, called CQG and inspired by class…
In the present paper, the first in a series of two, we propose a model of universal quantum computation using a fermionic/bosonic multi-particle continuous-time quantum walk with two internal states (e.g., the spin-up and down states of an electron). A dual-rail encoding is adopted to convert information: a single-qubit is represented by the presence of a single quantum walker in either of the two parallel paths. We develop a roundabout gate that moves a walker from one path to the next, either clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on its internal state. It can be realized by a single-parti…
Four new centrality measures for directed networks based on unitary, continuous-time quantum walks (CTQW) in $n$ dimensions -- where $n$ is the number of nodes -- are presented, tested and discussed. The main idea behind these methods consists in re-casting the classical HITS and PageRank algorithms as eigenvector problems for symmetric matrices, and using these symmetric matrices as Hamiltonians for CTQWs, in order to obtain a unitary evolution operator. The choice of the initial state is also crucial. Two options were tested: a vector with uniform occupation and a vector weighted w.r.t.~in- …
Quantum percolation describes the problem of a quantum particle moving through a disordered system. While certain similarities to classical percolation exist, the quantum case has additional complexity due to the possibility of Anderson localisation. Here, we consider a directed discrete-time quantum walk as a model to study quantum percolation of a two-state particle on a two-dimensional lattice. Using numerical analysis we determine the fraction of connected edges required (transition point) in the lattice for the two-state particle to percolate with finite (non-zero) probability for three f…
