We present a theoretical analysis of dynamic spin injection due to spin-dependent tunneling between a quantum well (QW) and a bound state split in spin projection due to an exchange interaction or external magnetic field. We focus on the impact of Coulomb correlations at the bound state on spin polarization and sheet density kinetics of the charge carriers in the QW. The theoretical approach is based on kinetic equations for the electron occupation numbers taking into account high order correlation functions for the bound state electrons. It is shown that the on-site Coulomb repulsion leads to an enhanced dynamic spin polarization of the electrons in the QW and a delay in the carriers tunneling into the bound state. The interplay of these two effects leads to non-trivial dependence of the spin polarization degree, which can be probed experimentally using time-resolved photoluminescence experiments. It is demonstrated that the influence of the Coulomb interactions can be controlled by adjusting the relaxation rates. These findings open a new way of studying the Hubbard-like electron interactions experimentally.
We calculate the efficiency of infrared optical spin injection in single-layer graphene with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and for in-plane magnetic field. The injection rate in the photon frequency range corresponding to the Rashba splitting is shown to be proportional to the ratio of the Zeeman and Rashba splittings. As a result, large spin polarization can be controllably achieved for experimentally available values of the spin-orbit coupling and in magnetic fields below 10 Tesla.
An array of spin torque oscillators (STOs) for practical applications such as pattern recognition was recently proposed, where several STOs are connected by a common nonmagnet. In this structure, in addition to the electric and/or magnetic interactions proposed in previous works, the STOs are spontaneously coupled to each other through the nonmagnetic connector, due to the injection of spin current. Solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation numerically for such system consisting of three STOs driven by the spin Hall effect, it is found that both in-phase and antiphase synchronization of the…
We study locking phenomena of two strongly coupled, high-quality factor nanomechanical resonator modes subject to a common parametric drive at a single drive frequency. By controlled dielectric gradient forces we tune the resonance frequencies of the flexural in-plane and out-of-plane oscillation of the high stress silicon nitride string through their mutual avoided crossing. For the case of the strong common parametric drive signal-idler generation via parametric oscillation is observed, analogously to the framework of nonlinear optical effects in an optical parametric oscillator. Frequency t…
A theory of spin transport and spin detection in Zeeman-split superconducting films at low temperatures is developed. It is shown that an injection of spin-unpolarized quasiparticles into a Zeeman-split superconductor gives rise to a spin imbalance. The relaxation length of such a spin signal is determined by the energy relaxation length and can be extremely large as compared to the relaxation length of spin-polarized quasiparticles. There can exist two types of signals: due to nonthermalized quasiparticle distribution and due to thermalized overheated electron distribution. They have differen…
We study theoretically helical edge states of 2D and 3D topological insulators (TI) tunnel-coupled to metal leads and show that their transport properties are strongly affected by contacts as the latter play a role of a heat bath and induce damping and relaxation of electrons in the helical states of TI. A simple structure that produces a pure spin current in the external circuit is proposed. The current and spin current delivered to the external circuit depend on relation between characteristic lengths: damping length due to tunneling, contact length and, in case of 3D TI, mean free path and …
The coupling of the spin of electrons to their motional state lies at the heart of recently discovered topological phases of matter. Here we create and detect spin-orbit coupling in an atomic Fermi gas, a highly controllable form of quantum degenerate matter. We reveal the spin-orbit gap via spin-injection spectroscopy, which characterizes the energy-momentum dispersion and spin composition of the quantum states. For energies within the spin-orbit gap, the system acts as a spin diode. To fully inhibit transport, we open an additional spin gap, thereby creating a spin-orbit coupled lattice whos…
The injection of spin polarized electrons from ferromagnetic metals (Fe and Co) into gallium nitride (GaN) via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is demonstrated. Electrons from STM tips are injected into the semiconductor. Net circular polarization of the emitted light is observed, which changes sign on reversal of the magnetization of the tip. The polarization is found to be in qualitative agreement with that expected from considerations based on the splitting of the valence bands due to spin-orbit coupling and the crystal field splitting corresponding to the wurtzite structure, and the mag…
Spin-dependent transport through an endohedral fullerene Co@C$_{60}$ dimer with gold electrodes is explored theoretically using density functional and extended Hückel theory. Density of states spin polarizations up to 95%, due to spin-splitting of Co 3d orbitals, are found by varying the gate and/or bias voltage. The current-voltage characteristics and strong (up to 100%) spin polarization of the current indicate that the device can be utilized for highly efficient spin injection into nonmagnetic conductors. This finding opens the way to the realization of electrostatically tuned spintronic na…
We suggest a series of transport experiments on spin precession in quantum dots coupled to one or two ferromagnetic leads. Dot spin states are created by spin injection and analyzed via the linear conductance through the dot, while an applied magnetic field gives rise to the Hanle effect. Such a Hanle experiment can be used to determine the spin lifetime in the quantum dot, to measure the spin injection efficiency into the dot, as well as proving the existence of intrinsic spin precession which is driven by the Coulomb interaction.
It is shown that the normal electron-electron scattering is a source of electrical resistance on non-contact current excitation in two-dimensional spin-split electron systems. In contrast to the contact current injection, non-contact current excitation causes spatially inhomogeneous polarization in a two-dimensional conductor leading to new resistivity mechanisms.
We have shown that electron spin density can be generated by a dc current flowing across a $pn$ junction with an embedded asymmetric quantum well. Spin polarization is created in the quantum well by radiative electron-hole recombination when the conduction electron momentum distribution is shifted with respect to the momentum distribution of holes in the spin split valence subbands. Spin current appears when the spin polarization is injected from the quantum well into the $n$-doped region of the $pn$ junction. The accompanied emission of circularly polarized light from the quantum well can ser…
We compute the spectrum of pure spin current injection in ferroelectric single-layer SnS, SnSe, GeS, and GeSe. The formalism takes into account the coherent spin dynamics of optically excited conduction states split in energy by spin orbit coupling. The velocity of spins is calculated as a function of incoming photon energy and angle of linearly polarized light within a full electronic band structure scheme using density functional theory. We find peak speeds of 250, 210, 180 and 154 Km/s for SnS, SnSe, GeS and GeSe, respectively which are an order of magnitude larger than those found in bulk …
The polarization splitting of the exciton ground state in two laterally coupled quantum dots under an in-plane electric field is investigated and its effective tuning is designed. It is found that there are significant Stark effect and anticrossing in energy levels. Due to coupling between inter- and intra-dot states, the absolute value of polarization splitting is significantly reduced, and it could be tuned to zero by the electric field for proper inter-dot separations. Our scheme is interesting for the research on the quantum dots-based entangled-photon source.
We study the processes of the electron and hole injection (double injection) into the i-region of graphene-layer and multiple graphene-layer p-i-n structures at the forward bias voltages. The hydrodynamic equations governing the electron and hole transport in graphene coupled with the two-dimensional Poisson equation are employed. Using analytical and numerical solutions of the equations of the model, we calculate the band edge profile, the spatial distributions of the quasi-Fermi energies, carrier density and velocity, and the current-voltage characteristics. In particular, we demonstrated th…
The possibility to inject a single electron into ballistic conductors is at the basis of the new field of electron quantum optics. Here, we consider a single electron injection into the helical edge channels of a topological insulator. Their counterpropagating nature and the unavoidable presence of electron-electron interactions dramatically affect the time evolution of the single wavepacket. Modeling the injection process from a mesoscopic capacitor in presence of non-local tunneling, we focus on the time resolved charge and energy packet dynamics. Both quantities split up into counterpropaga…
We study theoretically spin transport through a single-molecule magnet (SMM) in the sequential and cotunneling regimes, where the SMM is weakly coupled to one ferromagnetic and one normalmetallic leads. By a master-equation approach, it is found that the spin polarization injected from the ferromagnetic lead is amplified and highly polarized spin-current can be generated, due to the exchange coupling between the transport electron and the anisotropic spin of the SMM. Moreover, the spin-current polarization can be tuned by the gate or bias voltage, and thus an efficient spin injection device ba…
The bandstructure of bulk silicon has a six-fold valley degeneracy. Strain in the Si/SiGe quantum well system partially lifts the valley degeneracy, but the materials factors that set the splitting of the two lowest lying valleys are still under intense investigation. We propose a method for accurately determining the valley splitting in Si/SiGe double quantum dots embedded into a superconducting microwave resonator. We show that low lying valley states in the double quantum dot energy level spectrum lead to readily observable features in the cavity transmission. These features generate a "fin…
We study theoretically phonon-assisted relaxation and tunnelling in a system composed of a quantum dot which is coupled to a quantum well. Within the kp method combined with the Löwdin elimination, we calculate the electron states. We calculate acoustic phonon-assisted relaxation rates between the states in the quantum well and in the quantum dot and study the resulting electron kinetics. We show that transition efficiency crucially depends on the system geometry. We show also that under some conditions, transition efficiency can decrease with the temperature.
Electron spin dynamics is investigated in n-i-n GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum wells. The electron spin dephasing time is measured as a function of an external electrical bias under resonant excitation of the 1sHH intrawell exciton using a time-resolved Kerr rotation technique. It is found a strong electron spin dephasing time anisotropy caused by an interference of the structure inversion asymmetry and the bulk inversion asymmetry. This anisotropy is shown to be controlled by an electrical bias. A theoretical analysis of electron spin dephasing time anisotropy is developed. The ratio of Rashba a…
We have studied the behavior of the electronic energy spin-splitting of InGaAs-InAlAs based double quantum wells (narrow gap structures) under in-plane magnetic and transverse electric fields. We have developed an improved 8x8 version of the Transfer Matrix Approach that consider contributions from abrupt interfaces and external fields when tunneling through central barrier exists. We have included the Landé g-factor dependence on the external applied field. Also, we have calculated electron density of states and photoluminescence excitation. Variations of the electron spin-splitting energy le…
The Kuramoto model is a mathematical model for describing the collective synchronization phenomena of coupled oscillators. We theoretically demonstrate that an array of coupled photonic crystal lasers emulates the Kuramoto model with non-delayed nearest-neighbor coupling (the local Kuramoto model). Our novel strategy employs indirect coupling between lasers via additional cold cavities. By installing cold cavities between laser cavities, we avoid the strong coupling of lasers and realize ideal mutual injection-locking with effective non-delayed dissipative coupling. First, after discussing the…
We perform strategic current injection in a small mesoscopic superconductor and control the (non)equilibrium quantum states in an applied homogeneous magnetic field. In doing so, we realize a current-driven splitting of multi-quanta vortices, current-induced transitions between states with different angular momenta, and current-controlled switching between otherwise degenerate quantum states. These fundamental phenomena form the basis for discussed electronic and logic applications, and are confirmed in both theoretical simulations and multiple-small-tunnel-junction transport measurements.
All-electrical (magnetic-material-free) spin injection is one of the outstanding goals in spintronics. Topological insulators (TIs) have been recognized as a promising electrically controlled spin source thanks to the strong spin-orbit coupling and in particular, the spin-momentum locked topological surface states (TSS) supporting helically spin polarized currents. Many TI materials such as Bi-based chalcogenides are also layered 2D materials and can be incorporated into van der Waals (vdW) coupled heterostructures, opening the possibility of the utilization of TIs for electrical spin injectio…
A theory of spin-dependent electron transmission through resonant tunneling diode (RTD) grown of non-centrosymmetrical semiconductor compounds has been presented. It has been shown that RTD can be employed for injection and detection of spin-polarized carriers: (i) electric current flow in the interface plane leads to spin polarization of the transmitted carriers, (ii) transmission of the spin-polarized carriers through the RTD is accompanied by generation of an in-plane electric current. The microscopic origin of the effects is the spin-orbit coupling-induced splitting of the resonant level.
We investigate how the ability of the vortex oscillation mode of a spin-torque nano-oscillator to lock to an external microwave signal is modified when it is coupled to another oscillator. We show experimentally that mutual electrical coupling can lead to locking range enhancements of a factor 1.64. Furthermore, we analyze the evolution of the locking range as a function of the coupling strength through experiments and numerical simulations. By uncovering the mechanisms at stake in the locking range enhancement, our results will be useful for designing spin-torque nano-oscillators arrays with …
We study the Kondo effect in a quantum dot coupled to two noncollinear ferromagnetic leads. First, we study the spin splitting $δε=ε_{\downarrow}-ε_{\uparrow}$ of an energy level in the quantum dot by tunnel couplings to the ferromagnetic leads, using the Poor man's scaling method. The spin splitting takes place in an intermediate direction between magnetic moments in the two leads. $δε\propto p\sqrt{\cos^2(θ/2)+v^2\sin^2(θ/2)}$, where $p$ is the spin polarization in the leads, $θ$ is the angle between the magnetic moments, and $v$ is an asymmetric factor of tunnel barriers ($-1<v<1$). Hence t…
We report on nonlocal spin transport in mesoscopic superconducting aluminum wires in contact with the ferromagnetic insulator europium sulfide. We find spin injection and long-range spin transport in the regime of the exchange splitting induced by europium sulfide. Our results demonstrate that spin transport in superconductors can be manipulated by ferromagnetic insulators, and opens a new path to control spin currents in superconductors.
We present a theoretical study of low temperature nonequilibrium transport through an interacting quantum dot in the presence of Zeeman magnetic field and current injection into one of its leads. By using a self-consistent renormalized equation of motion approach, we show that the injection of a spin-polarized current leads to a modulation of the Zeeman splitting of the Kondo peak in the differential conductance. We find that an appropriate amount of spin accumulation in the lead can restore the Kondo peak by compensating the splitting due to magnetic field. By contrast when the injected curre…
We solve the low-energy part of the spectrum of a model that describes a cavity mode strongly coupled to an exciton, and both modes coupled to continua of bosonic excitations which give rise to homogeneous broadenig. The spectral density of the cavity modes in the low-energy manifold agrees with measured photoluminiscense spectra. We suggest fitting these spectra with a sum of two asymmetric Lorentzians.
We theoretically study the effects of bias-controlled interdot tunneling in vertically coupled quantum dots on the emission properties of spin excitons in various bias-controlled tunneling regimes. As a main result, for strongly coupled dots we predict substantial reduction of optical fine structure splitting without any drop in the optical oscillator strength. This special reduction diminishes the distinguibility of polarized decay paths in cascade emission processes suggesting the use of stacked quantum dot molecules as entangled photon-pair sources.
We report on nonlocal transport in superconductor hybrid structures, with ferromagnetic as well as normal-metal tunnel junctions attached to the superconductor. In the presence of a strong Zeeman splitting of the density of states, both charge and spin imbalance is injected into the superconductor. While previous experiments demonstrated spin injection from ferromagnetic electrodes, we show that spin imbalance is also created for normal-metal injector contacts. Using the combination of ferromagnetic and normal-metal detectors allows us to directly discriminate between charge and spin injection…
The time-dependent state of a classical spin locally exchange coupled to an edge site of a Kane-Mele model in the topologically non-trivial phase is studied numerically by solving the full set of coupled microscopic equations of motion for the spin and the electron system. Dynamics in the long-time limit is accessible thanks to dissipative boundary conditions, applied to all but the zigzag edge of interest. We study means to control the state of the spin via transport of a spin-polarization cloud through the helical edge states. The cloud is formed at a distant edge site using a local magnetic…
Tunnel-injection lasers promise various advantages in comparison to conventional laser designs. In this paper, we present a theoretical analysis for the physics of the tunnel-injection process in quantum-dot based laser devices. We describe the carrier dynamics in terms of scattering between states of the coupled system consisting of injector quantum-well, tunnel-barrier, and quantum-dots. Our analysis demonstrates how current quantum-dot based lasers can benefit from the tunnel-injection design. We find that the often assumed LO-phonon resonance condition for the level alignment only weakly i…
In the weak ferromagnetic MnCO$_3$ system, a low-frequency collective spin excitation (magnon) is the hybridized oscillation of nuclear and electron spins coupled through the hyperfine interaction. By using a split-ring resonator, we performed transmission spectroscopy measurements of MnCO$_3$ system and observed, for the first time, avoiding crossing between the hybridized nuclear-electron magnon mode and the resonator mode in the NMR-frequency range. The splitting strength is quite large due to the large spin density of $^{55}$Mn, and the cooperativity value $C=0.2$ (magnon-photon coupling p…
The quantum entanglement between two qubits is crucial for applications in the quantum communication. After the entanglement of photons was experimentally realized, much effort has been taken to exploit the entangled electrons in solid-state systems. Here, we propose a Cooper-pair splitter, which can generate spatially-separated but entangled electrons, in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator proximity-coupled with a superconductor. After coupling with a superconductor, the chiral edge states of the quantum anomalous Hall insulator can still survive, making the backscattering impossible. Thus, t…
We have proposed a fully quantum approach to non-perturbatively calculate the spin-split Landau levels and g-factor of various spin-orbit coupled solids, based on the k.p theory in the matrix mechanics representation. The new method considers the detailed band structure and the multiband effect of spin-orbit coupling irrespective of the magnetic field strength. An application of this method to PbTe, a typical Dirac electron system, is shown. Contrary to popular belief, it is shown that the spin-splitting parameter M, which is the ratio of the Zeeman to cyclotron energy, exhibits a remarkable m…
A pure spin current injector is proposed based on adiabatic pumping and crossed normal/Andreev reflection. The device consists of a three-terminal ferromagnet-superconductor-semiconductor system in which the injection of a pure spin current is into the semiconductor which is coupled to the superconductor within a coherence length away from the ferromagnet enabling the phenomena of crossed normal /Andreev reflection to operate. Quantum pumping is induced by adiabatically modulating two independent parameters of the ferromagnetic lead, namely the magnetization strength and the strength of coupli…
Achieving combination of spin and valley polarized states with topological insulating phase is pregnant to promote the fantastic integration of topological physics, spintronics and valleytronics. In this work, a spin-valley-coupled quantum spin Hall insulator (svc-QSHI) is predicted in Janus monolayer $\mathrm{CSb_{1.5}Bi_{1.5}}$ with dynamic, mechanical and thermal stabilities. The inequivalent valleys have opposite Berry curvature and spin moment, which can produce a spin-valley Hall effect. In the center of Brillouin zone, a Rashba-type spin splitting can be observed due to missing horizont…
We study two tunnel-coupled quantum dots each with a spin 1/2 and attached to leads in the Coulomb blockade regime. We study the interplay between Kondo correlations and the singlet-triplet exchange splitting $K$ between the two spins. We calculate the cotunneling current with elastic and inelastic contributions and its renormalization due to Kondo correlations, away and at the degeneracy point K=0. We show that these Kondo correlations induce pronounced peaks in the conductance as function of magnetic field $B$, inter-dot coupling $t_0$, and temperature. Moreover, the long-range part of the C…

We discuss different experimental situations and present a theoretical framework based on quantum kinetic equations. Within this framework we provide an accurate description of the non-equilibrium distribution of charge, spin and …

Using an atomistic spin model, we have simulated spin wave injection and propagation into antiferromagnetic IrMn from an exchange coupled CoFe layer. The spectral characteristics of the exited spin waves have a complex beating behavior arising from the non-collinear nature of the antiferromagnetic order. We find that the frequency response of the system depends strongly on the strength and frequency of oscillating field excitations. We also find that the strength of excited spin waves strongly decays away from the interfacial layer with a frequency dependent attenuation. Our findings suggest t…

A comparison is made between the degree of spin polarization of electrons excited by one- and two-photon absorption of circularly polarized light in bulk zincblende semiconductors. Time- and polarization-resolved experiments in (001)-oriented GaAs reveal an initial degree of spin polarization of 49% for both one- and two-photon spin injection at wavelengths of 775 and 1550 nm, in agreement with theory. The macroscopic symmetry and microscopic theory for two-photon spin injection are reviewed, and the latter is generalized to account for spin-splitting of the bands. The degree of spin polarizat…
Metamaterials and plasmonics are powerful tools for unconventional manipulation and harnessing of light. Metamaterials can be engineered to possess intriguing properties lacking in natural materials, such as negative refractive index. Plasmonics offers capabilities to confine light in subwavelength dimensions and to enhance light-matter interactions. Recently,graphene-based plasmonics has revealed emerging technological potential as it features large tunability, higher field-confinement and lower loss compared to metal-based plasmonics. Here,we introduce hybrid structures comprising graphene p…
Spin-charge interconversion is a very active direction in spintronics. Yet, the complex behaviour of some of the most promising systems such as SrTiO$_3$ (STO) interfaces is not fully understood. Here, on the basis of a 6-band $\boldsymbol{k.p}$ method combined with spin-resolved scattering theory, we give a theoretical demonstration of transverse spin-charge interconversion physics in STO Rashba interfaces. Calculations involve injection of spin current from a ferromagnetic contact by resonant tunneling into the native Rashba-split resonant levels of the STO triangular quantum well. We comput…

We study the spectral density of electrons rho in an interacting quantum dot (QD) with a hybridization lambda to a non-interacting QD, which in turn is coupled to a non-interacting conduction band. The system corresponds to an impurity Anderson model in which the conduction band has a Lorentzian density of states of width Delta2. We solved the model using perturbation theory in the Coulomb repulsion U (PTU) up to second order and a slave-boson mean-field approximation (SBMFA). The PTU works surprisingly well near the exactly solvable limit Delta2 -> 0. For fixed U and large enough lambda or sm…
We use microscopic linear response theory to derive a set of equations that provide a complete description of coupled spin and charge diffusive transport in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction. These equations capture a number of interrelated effects including spin accumulation and diffusion, Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation, magnetoelectric, and spin-galvanic effects. They can be used under very general circumstances to model transport experiments in 2DEG systems that involve either electrical or optical spin injection. We comment on the relationshi…
Spin injection is a powerful experimental probe into a wealth of nonequilibrium spin-dependent phenomena displayed by materials with spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we develop a theory of coupled spin-charge diffusive transport in two-dimensional spin-valve devices. The theory describes a realistic proximity-induced SOC with both spatially uniform and random components of the SOC due to adatoms and imperfections, and applies to the two dimensional electron gases found in two-dimensional materials and van der Walls heterostructures. The various charge-to-spin conversion mechanisms known to be …
