Recent developments in the field of robot grasping have shown great improvements in the grasp success rates when dealing with unknown objects. In this work we improve on one of the most promising approaches, the Grasp Quality Convolutional Neural Network (GQ-CNN) trained on the DexNet 2.0 dataset. We propose a new architecture for the GQ-CNN and describe practical improvements that increase the model validation accuracy from 92.2% to 95.8% and from 85.9% to 88.0% on respectively image-wise and object-wise training and validation splits.
Reliably planning fingertip grasps for multi-fingered hands lies as a key challenge for many tasks including tool use, insertion, and dexterous in-hand manipulation. This task becomes even more difficult when the robot lacks an accurate model of the object to be grasped. Tactile sensing offers a promising approach to account for uncertainties in object shape. However, current robotic hands tend to lack full tactile coverage. As such, a problem arises of how to plan and execute grasps for multi-fingered hands such that contact is made with the area covered by the tactile sensors. To address thi…
This work provides a framework for a workspace aware online grasp planner. This framework greatly improves the performance of standard online grasp planning algorithms by incorporating a notion of reachability into the online grasp planning process. Offline, a database of hundreds of thousands of unique end-effector poses were queried for feasability. At runtime, our grasp planner uses this database to bias the hand towards reachable end-effector configurations. The bias keeps the grasp planner in accessible regions of the planning scene so that the resulting grasps are tailored to the situati…
Different manipulation tasks require different types of grasps. For example, holding a heavy tool like a hammer requires a multi-fingered power grasp offering stability, while holding a pen to write requires a multi-fingered precision grasp to impart dexterity on the object. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic grasp planner that explicitly models grasp type for planning high-quality precision and power grasps in real-time. We take a learning approach in order to plan grasps of different types for previously unseen objects when only partial visual information is available. Our work demons…
We propose a novel approach to multi-fingered grasp planning leveraging learned deep neural network models. We train a voxel-based 3D convolutional neural network to predict grasp success probability as a function of both visual information of an object and grasp configuration. We can then formulate grasp planning as inferring the grasp configuration which maximizes the probability of grasp success. In addition, we learn a prior over grasp configurations as a mixture density network conditioned on our voxel-based object representation. We show that this object conditional prior improves grasp …

Belief space planning is a viable alternative to formalise partially observable control problems and, in the recent years, its application to robot manipulation problems has grown. However, this planning approach was tried successfully only on simplified control problems. In this paper, we apply belief space planning to the problem of planning dexterous reach-to-grasp trajectories under object pose uncertainty. In our framework, the robot perceives the object to be grasped on-the-fly as a point cloud and compute a full 6D, non-Gaussian distribution over the object's pose (our belief space). Th…
We present an attention based visual analysis framework to compute grasp-relevant information in order to guide grasp planning using a multi-fingered robotic hand. Our approach uses a computational visual attention model to locate regions of interest in a scene, and uses a deep convolutional neural network to detect grasp type and point for a sub-region of the object presented in a region of interest. We demonstrate the proposed framework in object grasping tasks, in which the information generated from the proposed framework is used as prior information to guide the grasp planning. Results sh…
We propose a novel approach to multi-fingered grasp planning leveraging learned deep neural network models. We train a convolutional neural network to predict grasp success as a function of both visual information of an object and grasp configuration. We can then formulate grasp planning as inferring the grasp configuration which maximizes the probability of grasp success. We efficiently perform this inference using a gradient-ascent optimization inside the neural network using the backpropagation algorithm. Our work is the first to directly plan high quality multifingered grasps in configurat…
This paper introduces a framework to plan grasps with multi-fingered hands. The framework includes a multi-dimensional iterative surface fitting (MDISF) for grasp planning and a grasp trajectory optimization (GTO) for grasp imagination. The MDISF algorithm searches for optimal contact regions and hand configurations by minimizing the collision and surface fitting error, and the GTO algorithm generates optimal finger trajectories to reach the highly ranked grasp configurations and avoid collision with the environment. The proposed grasp planning and imagination framework considers the collision…

This paper develops intelligent algorithms for robots to reorient objects. Given the initial and goal poses of an object, the proposed algorithms plan a sequence of robot poses and grasp configurations that reorient the object from its initial pose to the goal. While the topic has been studied extensively in previous work, this paper makes important improvements in grasp planning by using over-segmented meshes, in data storage by using relational database, and in regrasp planning by mixing real-world roadmaps. The improvements enable robots to do robust regrasp planning using 10,000s of grasps…

Robotic grasping of 3D deformable objects is critical for real-world applications such as food handling and robotic surgery. Unlike rigid and articulated objects, 3D deformable objects have infinite degrees of freedom. Fully defining their state requires 3D deformation and stress fields, which are exceptionally difficult to analytically compute or experimentally measure. Thus, evaluating grasp candidates for grasp planning typically requires accurate, but slow 3D finite element method (FEM) simulation. Sampling-based grasp planning is often impractical, as it requires evaluation of a large num…
We present a method for planning robust grasps over uncertain shape completed objects. For shape completion, a deep neural network is trained to take a partial view of the object as input and outputs the completed shape as a voxel grid. The key part of the network is dropout layers which are enabled not only during training but also at run-time to generate a set of shape samples representing the shape uncertainty through Monte Carlo sampling. Given the set of shape completed objects, we generate grasp candidates on the mean object shape but evaluate them based on their joint performance in ter…
We propose an optimization-based approach to plan power grasps. Central to our method is a reformulation of grasp planning as an infinite program under complementary constraints (IPCC), which allows contacts to happen between arbitrary pairs of points on the object and the robot gripper. We show that IPCC can be reduced to a conventional finite-dimensional nonlinear program (NLP) using a kernel-integral relaxation. Moreover, the values and Jacobian matrices of the kernel-integral can be evaluated efficiently using a modified Fast Multipole Method (FMM). We further guarantee that the planned gr…
Grasp planning for multi-fingered hands is computationally expensive due to the joint-contact coupling, surface nonlinearities and high dimensionality, thus is generally not affordable for real-time implementations. Traditional planning methods by optimization, sampling or learning work well in planning for parallel grippers but remain challenging for multi-fingered hands. This paper proposes a strategy called finger splitting, to plan precision grasps for multi-fingered hands starting from optimal parallel grasps. The finger splitting is optimized by a dual-stage iterative optimization includ…

In this paper we propose an approach for efficient grasp selection for manipulation tasks of unknown objects. Even for simple tasks such as pick-and-place, a unique solution is rare to occur. Rather, multiple candidate grasps must be considered and (potentially) tested till a successful, kinematically feasible path is found. To make this process efficient, the grasps should be ordered such that those more likely to succeed are tested first. We propose to use grasp manipulability as a metric to prioritize grasps. We present results of simulation experiments which demonstrate the usefulness of o…

This paper develops model-based grasp planning algorithms for assembly tasks. It focuses on industrial end-effectors like grippers and suction cups, and plans grasp configurations considering CAD models of target objects. The developed algorithms are able to stably plan a large number of high-quality grasps, with high precision and little dependency on the quality of CAD models. The undergoing core technique is superimposed segmentation, which pre-processes a mesh model by peeling it into facets. The algorithms use superimposed segments to locate contact points and parallel facets, and synthes…
Grasp planning for multi-fingered hands is still a challenging task due to the high nonlinear quality metrics, the high dimensionality of hand posture configuration, and complex object shapes. Analytical-based grasp planning algorithms formulate the grasping problem as a constraint optimization problem using advanced convex optimization solvers. However, these are not guaranteed to find a globally optimal solution. Data-driven based algorithms utilize machine learning algorithm frameworks to learn the grasp policy using enormous training data sets. This paper presents a new approach for grasp …

This paper presents a real-time, object-independent grasp synthesis method which can be used for closed-loop grasping. Our proposed Generative Grasping Convolutional Neural Network (GG-CNN) predicts the quality and pose of grasps at every pixel. This one-to-one mapping from a depth image overcomes limitations of current deep-learning grasping techniques by avoiding discrete sampling of grasp candidates and long computation times. Additionally, our GG-CNN is orders of magnitude smaller while detecting stable grasps with equivalent performance to current state-of-the-art techniques. The light-we…

In teleoperation, research has mainly focused on target approaching, where we deal with the more challenging object manipulation task by advancing the shared control technique. Appropriately manipulating an object is challenging due to the fine motion constraint requirements for a specific manipulation task. Although these motion constraints are critical for task success, they often are subtle when observing ambiguous human motion. The disembodiment problem and physical discrepancy between the human and robot hands bring additional uncertainty, further exaggerating the complications of the obj…
Customized grippers have broad applications in industrial assembly lines. Compared with general parallel grippers, the customized grippers have specifically designed fingers to increase the contact area with the workpieces and improve the grasp robustness. However, grasp planning for customized grippers is challenging due to the object variations, surface contacts and structural constraints of the grippers. In this paper, an iterative surface fitting (ISF) algorithm is proposed to plan grasps for customized grippers. ISF simultaneously searches for optimal gripper transformation and finger dis…
Precision grasps with multi-fingered hands are important for precise placement and in-hand manipulation tasks. Searching precision grasps on the object represented by point cloud, is challenging due to the complex object shape, high-dimensionality, collision and undesired properties of the sensing and positioning. This paper proposes an optimization model to search for precision grasps with multi-fingered hands. The model takes noisy point cloud of the object as input and optimizes the grasp quality by iteratively searching for the palm pose and finger joints positions. The collision between t…

An unstable grasp pose can lead to slip, thus an unstable grasp pose can be predicted by slip detection. A regrasp is required afterwards to correct the grasp pose in order to finish the task. In this work, we propose a novel regrasp planner with multi-sensor modules to plan grasp adjustments with the feedback from a slip detector. Then a regrasp planner is trained to estimate the location of center of mass, which helps robots find an optimal grasp pose. The dataset in this work consists of 1 025 slip experiments and 1 347 regrasps collected by one pair of tactile sensors, an RGB-D camera and …

To realize a robust robotic grasping system for unknown objects in an unstructured environment, large amounts of grasp data and 3D model data for the object are required, the sizes of which directly affect the rate of successful grasps. To reduce the time cost of data acquisition and labeling and increase the rate of successful grasps, we developed a self-supervised learning mechanism to control grasp tasks performed by manipulators. First, a manipulator automatically collects the point cloud for the objects from multiple perspectives to increase the efficiency of data acquisition. The complet…
In this paper we investigate how to effectively deploy deep learning in practical industrial settings, such as robotic grasping applications. When a deep-learning based solution is proposed, usually lacks of any simple method to generate the training data. In the industrial field, where automation is the main goal, not bridging this gap is one of the main reasons why deep learning is not as widespread as it is in the academic world. For this reason, in this work we developed a system composed by a 3-DoF Pose Estimator based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and an effective procedure to …

Data-driven approaches have become a dominant paradigm for robotic grasp planning. However, the performance of these approaches is enormously influenced by the quality of the available training data. In this paper, we propose a framework to generate object shapes to improve the grasping dataset quality, thus enhancing the grasping ability of a pre-designed learning-based grasp planning network. In this framework, the object shapes are embedded into a low-dimensional feature space using an AutoEncoder (encoder-decoder) based structure network. We present a two-level branch-and-bound (BB) algorithm to compute the optimal gripper pose that maximizes a grasp metric in a restricted search space. Our method can take the gripper's kinematics feasibility into consideration to ensure that a given gripper can reach the set of grasp points without collisions or predict infeasibility with finite-time termination when no pose exists for a given set of grasp points. Our main technical contribution is a novel mixed-integer conic programming (MICP) formulation for the inverse kinematics of the gripper that uses a small number of binary variables a…

In this paper, we propose a object detection method expressed as rotated bounding box to solve grasping challenge in the scenes where rigid objects and soft objects are mixed together. Compared with traditional detection methods, this method can output the angle information of rotated objects and thus can guarantee that within each rotated bounding box, there is a single instance. This technology is especially useful in the case of pile of objects with different orientations. In our method, when uncategorized objects with specific geometry shapes (rectangle or cylinder) are detected, the progr…

Grasp planning and most specifically the grasp space exploration is still an open issue in robotics. This article presents an efficient procedure for exploring the grasp space of a multifingered adaptive gripper for generating reliable grasps given a known object pose. This procedure relies on a limited dataset of manually specified expert grasps, and use a mixed analytic and data-driven approach based on the use of a grasp quality metric and variational autoencoders. The performances of this method are assessed by generating grasps in simulation for three different objects. On this grasp plan…
Shape informs how an object should be grasped, both in terms of where and how. As such, this paper describes a segmentation-based architecture for decomposing objects sensed with a depth camera into multiple primitive shapes, along with a post-processing pipeline for robotic grasping. Segmentation employs a deep network, called PS-CNN, trained on synthetic data with 6 classes of primitive shapes and generated using a simulation engine. Each primitive shape is designed with parametrized grasp families, permitting the pipeline to identify multiple grasp candidates per shape region. The grasps ar…
Modern approaches to grasp planning often involve deep learning. However, there are only a few large datasets of labelled grasping examples on physical robots, and available datasets involve relatively simple planar grasps with two-fingered grippers. Here we present: 1) a new human grasp demonstration method that facilitates rapid collection of naturalistic grasp examples, with full six-degree-of-freedom gripper positioning; and 2) a dataset of roughly forty thousand successful grasps on 109 different rigid objects with the RightHand Robotics three-fingered ReFlex gripper.
Current learning-based robot grasping approaches exploit human-labeled datasets for training the models. However, there are two problems with such a methodology: (a) since each object can be grasped in multiple ways, manually labeling grasp locations is not a trivial task; (b) human labeling is biased by semantics. While there have been attempts to train robots using trial-and-error experiments, the amount of data used in such experiments remains substantially low and hence makes the learner prone to over-fitting. In this paper, we take the leap of increasing the available training data to 40 …
Learning-based approaches to grasp planning are preferred over analytical methods due to their ability to better generalize to new, partially observed objects. However, data collection remains one of the biggest bottlenecks for grasp learning methods, particularly for multi-fingered hands. The relatively high dimensional configuration space of the hands coupled with the diversity of objects common in daily life requires a significant number of samples to produce robust and confident grasp success classifiers. In this paper, we present the first active deep learning approach to grasping that se…
In this paper, we introduce two methods of improving real-time object grasping performance from monocular colour images in an end-to-end CNN architecture. The first is the addition of an auxiliary task during model training (multi-task learning). Our multi-task CNN model improves grasping performance from a baseline average of 72.04% to 78.14% on the large Jacquard grasping dataset when performing a supplementary depth reconstruction task. The second is introducing a positional loss function that emphasises loss per pixel for secondary parameters (gripper angle and width) only on points of an …

This paper presents a hierarchical framework for planning and control of in-hand manipulation of a rigid object involving grasp changes using fully-actuated multifingered robotic hands. While the framework can be applied to the general dexterous manipulation, we focus on a more complex definition of in-hand manipulation, where at the goal pose the hand has to reach a grasp suitable for using the object as a tool. The high level planner determines the object trajectory as well as the grasp changes, i.e. adding, removing, or sliding fingers, to be executed by the low-level controller. While the …
Current end-to-end grasp planning methods propose grasps in the order of seconds that attain high grasp success rates on a diverse set of objects, but often by constraining the workspace to top-grasps. In this work, we present a method that allows end-to-end top-grasp planning methods to generate full six-degree-of-freedom grasps using a single RGB-D view as input. This is achieved by estimating the complete shape of the object to be grasped, then simulating different viewpoints of the object, passing the simulated viewpoints to an end-to-end grasp generation method, and finally executing the …

We consider the task of semantic robotic grasping, in which a robot picks up an object of a user-specified class using only monocular images. Inspired by the two-stream hypothesis of visual reasoning, we present a semantic grasping framework that learns object detection, classification, and grasp planning in an end-to-end fashion. A "ventral stream" recognizes object class while a "dorsal stream" simultaneously interprets the geometric relationships necessary to execute successful grasps. We leverage the autonomous data collection capabilities of robots to obtain a large self-supervised datase…
