The symmetry considerations that imply a non-zero anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in certain non-collinear antiferromagnets also imply both non-zero orbital magnetization and a net spin magnetization. We have explicitly evaluated the orbital magnetizations of several anomalous Hall effect antiferromagnets and find that they tend to dominate over spin magnetizations, especially so when spin-orbit interactions are weak. Because of the greater relative importance of orbital magnetization the coupling between magnetic order and an external magnetic field is unusual. We explain how magnetic fields can be used to manipulate magnetic configurations in these systems, pointing in particular to the important role played by the response of orbital magnetization to the Zeeman-like spin exchange fields.
Polarization is a key ingredient of all waves, including the electromagnetic wave, the acoustic wave, as well as the spin wave. Due to the fixed ferromagnetic order, the spin wave in ferromagnet is limited to the right circular polarization. The spin wave in antiferromagnet, however, is endowed with the full polarization degree of freedom because of the two identical magnetic sublattices. In the synthetic antiferromagnet, the two magnetic sublattices are spatially separated into two sublayers. The circular polarization of spin wave is partially locked to the magnetic sublattice of the antiferr…
Although much effort has been made to explore quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in both theory and experiment, the QAHE systems with tunable Chern numbers are yet limited. Here, we theoretically propose that NiAsO$_3$ and PdSbO$_3$, monolayer transitional metal oxides, can realize QAHE with tunable Chern numbers via manipulating their magnetization orientations. When the magnetization lies in the \textit{x-y} plane and all mirror symmetries are broken, the low-Chern-number (i.e., $\mathcal{C}=\pm1$) phase emerges. When the magnetization exhibits non-zero \textit{z}-direction component, the …
Most canted antiferromagnets are also anomalous Hall antiferromagnets (AHE AFMs), i.e. they have an anomalous Hall response and other responses with the same symmetry requirements. We suggest that AHE AFMs are promising materials as hosts for high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effects. By considering models of two-dimensional (001) perovskite layers with strong spin-orbit coupling that isolates an effective total angular momentum $\tilde{j}= \frac{1}{2}$ subspace of the $t_{2g}$ manifold, we propose a strategy to engineering quantum anomalous Hall antiferromagnets.
Here, we propose quantum spin Hall-like phononic states in van der Waals bilayer systems with antiferromagnetic ordering. Antiferromagnetic ordering in bilayer systems with small interlayer interaction makes the total Chern number zero, where the Chern numbers for each layer are opposite to each other. In bilayer CrI3 where antiferromagnetic ordering has been experimentally demonstrated, we show that the quantum spin Hall-like states appear with spatially separated chiral edge modes.
We show evidence of the backscattering of quantum Hall edge channels in a narrow graphene Hall bar, induced by the gating effect of the conducting tip of a Scanning Gate Microscope, which we can position with nanometer precision. We show full control over the edge channels and are able, due to the spatial variation of the tip potential, to separate co-propagating edge channels in the Hall bar, creating junctions between regions of different charge carrier density, that have not been observed in devices based on top- or split-gates. The solution of the corresponding quantum scattering problem i…
An important vision of modern magnetic research is to use antiferromagnets as controllable and active ultrafast components in spintronic devices. Hematite is a promising model material in this respect because its pronounced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction leads to the coexistence of antiferromagnetism and weak ferromagnetism. Here, we use femtosecond laser pulses to drive terahertz spin currents from hematite into an adjacent Pt layer. We find two contributions to the generation of the spin current with distinctly different dynamics: the impulsive stimulated Raman scatting that relies on the…
Whereas anyons are the building blocks in topological quantum computation, it remains challenging to create and control each anyon individually. Here, we point out that dissipative dynamics in cavities deterministically deliver droplets of light in desired fractional quantum Hall states. In these quantum Hall droplets, both the number and locations of anyons are precisely controllable without requiring extra potentials to imprint and localize such quasiparticles. Using the density profile of light, the anyonic statistics is readily accessible. Moreover, entangling a quantum spin valve with the…
Metallic antiferromagnets with noncollinear orientation of magnetic moments provide a playground for investigating spin-dependent transport properties by analysis of the anomalous Hall effect. The intermetallic compound Mn5Si3 is an intinerant antiferromagnet with collinear and noncollinear magnetic structures due to Mn atoms on two inequivalent lattice sites. Here, magnetotransport measurements on polycrystalline thin films and a single crystal are reported. In all samples, an additional contribution to the anomalous Hall effect attributed to the noncollinear arrangment of magnetic moments is…
We investigate the spin Hall magnetoresistance in thin film bilayer heterostructures of the heavy metal Pt and the antiferromagnetic insulator NiO. While rotating an external magnetic field in the easy plane of NiO, we record the longitudinal and the transverse resistivity of the Pt layer and observe an amplitude modulation consistent with the spin Hall magnetoresistance. In comparison to Pt on collinear ferrimagnets, the modulation is phase shifted by 90° and its amplitude strongly increases with the magnitude of the magnetic field. We explain the observed magnetic field-dependence of the spi…
The anomalous Hall effect has been indispensable in our understanding of numerous magnetic phenomena. This concerns both ferromagnetic materials, as well as diverse classes of antiferromagnets, where in addition to the anomalous and crystal Hall effects, the topological Hall effect in non-coplanar antiferromagnets has been a subject of intensive research in the past decades. Here, we uncover a new flavour of the anomalous Hall effect in canted spin systems. Using advanced theoretical tools we demonstrate that upon canting, the anomalous Hall effect acquires a contribution which is sensitive to…
Ferrimagnets (FIMs) can function as high-frequency antiferromagnets while being easy to detect as ferromagnets, offering unique opportunities for ultrafast device applications. While the physical behavior of FIMs near the compensation point has been widely studied, there lacks a generic understanding of FIMs where the ratio of sublattice spins can vary freely between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic limits. Here we investigate the physical properties of a model two-sublattice FIM manipulated by static magnetic fields and current-induced torques. By continuously varying the ratio of subl…
We consider the current-induced dynamics of insulating antiferromagnets in a spin Hall geometry. Sufficiently large in-plane currents perpendicular to the Néel order trigger spontaneous oscillations at frequencies between the acoustic and the optical eigenmodes. The direction of the driving current determines the chirality of the excitation. When the current exceeds a threshold, the combined effect of spin pumping and current-induced torques introduces a dynamic feedback that sustains steady-state oscillations with amplitudes controllable via the applied current. The ac voltage output is calcu…
We analyze the complex impact of the local magnetic spin texture on the transverse Hall-type voltage in device structures utilized to measure magnetoresistance effects. We find a highly localized and asymmetric magnetic sensitivity in the eight-terminal geometries that are frequently used in current-induced switching experiments, for instance to probe antiferromagnetic materials. Using current-induced switching of antiferromagnetic NiO/Pt as an example, we estimate the change in the spin Hall magnetoresistance signal associated with switching events based on the domain switching patterns obser…
One of the main obstacles that prevents practical applications of antiferromagnets is the difficulty of manipulating the magnetic order parameter. Recently, following the theoretical prediction [J. Železný et al., PRL 113, 157201 (2014)], the electrical switching of magnetic moments in an antiferromagnet has been demonstrated [P. Wadley et al., Science 351, 587 (2016)]. The switching is due to the so-called spin-orbit torque, which has been extensively studied in ferromagnets. In this phenomena a non-equilibrium spin-polarization exchange coupled to the ordered local moments is induced by curr…
We investigate the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) at room temperature in thin film heterostructures of antiferromagnetic, insulating, (0001)-oriented alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite) and Pt. We measure their longitudinal and transverse resistivities while rotating an applied magnetic field of up to 17T in three orthogonal planes. For out-of-plane magnetotransport measurements, we find indications for a multidomain antiferromagnetic configuration whenever the field is aligned along the film normal. For in-plane field rotations, we clearly observe a sinusoidal resistivity oscillation characteristic for…
We report on the pressure evolution of the giant anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge. The AHE originating from the non-vanishing Berry curvature in Mn$_3$Ge can be continuously tuned by application of hydrostatic pressure. At room temperature, the Hall signal changes sign as a function of pressure and vanishes completely at $p=1.53$ GPa. Even though the Hall conductivity changes sign upon increasing pressure, the room-temperature saturation value of 23 ${\rm Ω^{-1}cm^{-1}}$ at 2.85 GPa is remarkably high and comparable to the saturation value at ambient pressure …
In the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn, we compare simultaneous measurements of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) through two magnetic phase transitions: the high-temperature paramagnetic/antiferromagnetic phase transition at the Néel temperature ($T_N \approx$420~K), and a lower-temperature incommensurate magnetic ordering at $T_1 \approx$270~K. While both the AHE and MOKE are sensitive to the same underlying symmetries of the antiferromagnetic non-collinear spin order, we find that the transition temperatures measured by these two techniques un…
In the quantum Hall regime of graphene, antiferromagnetic and spin-polarized ferromagnetic states at the zeroth Landau level compete, leading to a canted antiferromagnetic state depending on the direction and magnitude of an applied magnetic field. Here, we investigate this transition at 2.7 K in graphene Hall bars that are proximity coupled to the ferrimagnetic insulator Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$. From nonlocal transport measurements, we demonstrate an induced magnetic exchange field in graphene, which lowers the magnetic field required to modulate the magnetic state in graphene. These results …
Anomalous valley Hall (AVH) effect is a fundamental transport phenomenon in the field of condensed-matter physics. Usually, the research on AVH effect is mainly focused on 2D lattices with ferromagnetic order. Here, by means of model analysis, we present a general design principle for realizing AVH effect in antiferromagnetic monolayers, which involves the introduction of nonequilibrium potentials to break of PT symmetry. Using first-principles calculations, we further demonstrate this design principle by stacking antiferromagnetic monolayer MnPSe3 on ferroelectric monolayer Sc2CO2 and achieve…
We report on Cr doping effect in Mn3Sn polycrystalline films with both uniform and modulation doping. It is found that Cr doping with low concentration does not cause notable changes to the structural and magnetic properties of Mn3Sn, but it significantly enhances the anomalous Hall conductivity, particularly for modulation-doped samples at low temperature. A Hall conductivity as high as 184.8 Ω-1 cm-1 is obtained for modulation-doped samples at 50 K, in a sharp contrast to vanishingly small values for undoped samples at the same temperature. We attribute the enhancement to the change of Fermi…
Response properties that are purely intrinsic to physical systems are of paramount importance in physics research, as they probe fundamental properties of band structures and allow quantitative calculation and comparison with experiment. For anomalous Hall transport in magnets, an intrinsic effect can appear at the second order to the applied electric field. We show that this intrinsic second-order anomalous Hall effect is associated with an intrinsic band geometric property -- the dipole moment of Berry-connection polarizability (BCP) in momentum space. The effect has scaling relation and sym…
We show that the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in alpha-MnTe impacts the transport behavior by generating an anisotropic valence-band splitting, resulting in four spin-polarized pockets near Gamma. A minimal k-dot-p model is constructed to capture this splitting by group theory analysis, a tight-binding model and ab initio calculations. The model is shown to describe the rotation symmetry of the zero-field planer Hall effect (PHE). The upper limit of the PHE percentage is shown to be fundamentally determined by the band shape, and is quantitatively estimated to be roughly 31% by first principles.
We theoretically study the interplay between bulk Weyl electrons and magnetic topological defects, including magnetic domains, domain walls, and $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortex lines, in the antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals \mnsn\ and Mn$_3$Ge with negative vector chirality. We argue that these materials possess a hierarchy of energies scales which allows a description of the spin structure and spin dynamics using a XY model with $\mathbb{Z}_6$ anisotropy. We propose a dynamical equation of motion for the XY order parameter, which implies the presence of $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortex lines, the double-domain p…
We have developed a drift-diffusion equation of spin transport in collinear bipartite metallic antiferromagnets. Starting from a model tight-binding Hamiltonian, we obtain the quantum kinetic equation within Keldysh formalism and expand it to the lowest order in spatial gradient using Wigner expansion method. In the diffusive limit, these equations track the spatio-temporal evolution of the spin accumulations and spin currents on each sublattice of the antiferromagnet. We use these equations to address the nature of spin transfer torque in (i) a spin-valve composed of a ferromagnet and an anti…
Antiferromagnetic insulators (AFMI) are robust against stray fields, and their intrinsic dynamics could enable ultrafast magneto-optics and ultrascaled magnetic information processing. Low dissipation, long distance spin transport and electrical manipulation of antiferromagnetic order are much sought-after goals of spintronics research. Here, we report the first experimental evidence of robust long-distance spin transport through an AFMI, in our case the gate-controlled, canted antiferromagnetic (CAF) state that appears at the charge neutrality point of graphene in the presence of an external …
The anomalous Hall effect is investigated theoretically by means of density functional calculations for the non-collinear antiferromagnetic order of the hexagonal compounds Mn$_3$Ge and Mn$_3$Sn using various planar triangular magnetic configurations as well as unexpected non-planar configurations. The former give rise to anomalous Hall conductivities (AHC) that are found to be extremely anisotropic. For the planar cases the AHC is connected with Weyl-points in the energy-band structure, which are described in detail. If this case were observable in Mn$_3$Ge, a large AHC of about 900 S/cm shou…
Exciting phenomena may emerge in non-centrosymmetric two-dimensional (2D) electronic systems when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interplays dynamically with Coulomb interactions, band topology, and external modulating forces, etc. Here, we report illuminating synergetic effects between SOC and Stark in centrosymmetric few-layer black arsenic (BAs), manifested as giant Rashba valley splitting and exotic quantum Hall states (QHS) reversibly controlled by electrostatic gating. The unusual finding is rooted in the puckering square lattice of BAs, in which heavy $4p$ orbitals form highly asymmetric $Γ$ …
$Z_{2}$ and Chern topological phases such as newly discovered quantum spin Hall and original quantum Hall states hardly both co--exist in a single material due to their contradictory requirement on the time--reversal symmetry (TRS). We show that although the TRS is broken in systems with a periodically driving ac-field, an effective TRS can still be defined provided the ac--field is linearly polarized or certain other conditions are satisfied. The controllable TRS provides us with a route to manipulate $Z_{2} $ and Chern topological phases in a single material by tuning the polarization of the…
We examine the far-field optical response, under-plane wave excitation in the presence of a static magnetic field, of core-shell nanoparticles involving a gyroelectric component, either as the inner or the outer layer, through analytic calculations based on appropriately extended Mie theory. We focus on absorption and scattering of light by bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Bi:YIG) nanospheres and nanoshells, combined with excitonic materials such as organic-molecule aggregates or two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides, and discuss the hybrid character of the modes emerging fr…
We study theoretically and experimentally the spin pumping signals induced by the resonance of canted antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and demonstrate that they can generate easily observable inverse spin-Hall voltages. Using a bilayer of hematite/heavy metal as a model system, we measure at room temperature the antiferromagnetic resonance and an associated inverse spin-Hall voltage, as large as in collinear antiferromagnets. As expected for coherent spin-pumping, we observe that the sign of the inverse spin-Hall voltage provides direct information about the mode handedn…

Spin current experiences minimal dephasing and scattering in Si due to small spin-orbit coupling and spin-lattice interactions is the primary source of spin relaxation. We hypothesize that if the specimen dimension is of the same order as the spin diffusion length then spin polarization will lead to non-equilibrium spin accumulation and emergent phase transition. In n-Si, spin diffusion length has been reported up to 6 μm. The spin accumulation in Si will modify the thermal transport behavior of Si, which can be detected with thermal characterization. In this study, we report observation of sp…
Recent experiments demonstrate that antiferromagnets exhibit the spin Hall effect. We study a tight-binding model of an antiferromagnet on a square lattice with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and disorder. By exact diagonalization of a finite system connected to reservoirs within the Landauer-B$\ddot{\text{u}}$ttiker formalism, we compute the transverse spin Hall current in response to a longitudinal voltage difference. Surprisingly, the spin Hall conductance can be considerably larger in antiferromagnets than in normal metals. We compare our results to the Berry-phase-induced spin Hall effect gov…
Harmonic analysis is a powerful tool to characterize and quantify current-induced torques acting on magnetic materials, but so far it remains an open question in studying antiferromagnets. Here we formulate a general theory of harmonic Hall responses of collinear antiferromagnets driven by current-induced torques including both field-like and damping-like components. By scanning a magnetic field of variable strength in three orthogonal planes, we are able to distinguish the contributions from field-like torque, damping-like torque, and concomitant thermal effects by analyzing the second harmon…
Dynamical antiferromagnets pump spins efficiently into adjacent conductors as ferromagnets. The high antiferromagnetic resonance frequencies represent a challenge for experimental detection, but magnetic fields can reduce these resonance frequencies. We compute the inverse spin Hall voltages resulting from dynamical spin excitations as a function of a magnetic field along the easy axis and the polarization of the driving AC magnetic field perpendicular to the easy axis. We consider the insulating antiferromagnets MnF$_2$, FeF$_2$, and NiO. Near the spin-flop transition, there is a significant …

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE), a Hall signal occurring without an external magnetic field, is one of the most significant phenomena. However, understanding the AHE mechanism has been challenging and largely restricted to ferromagnetic metals. Here, we investigate the recently discovered AHE in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn3Sn by measuring a thermal analog of the AHE, known as an anomalous thermal Hall effect (ATHE). The amplitude of the ATHE scales with the anomalous Hall conductivity of Mn3Sn over a wide temperature range, demonstrating that the AHE of Mn3Sn arises from a dissipationless in…
We study the anomalous Hall effect and orbital magnetization in chiral antiferromagnets, constructing a simple tight-binding model on a stacked Kagome lattice structure with spin-orbit coupling and the exchange interaction between the localized spins and itinerant electrons. It is shown that the ground state is an orbital ferromagnet with the easy-plane anisotropy. The relation between the orbital magnetization and the configuration of the Weyl points are discussed.
We study the temperature dependence of spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI)/metal bilayer systems. We calculate the amplitude of the SMR signal by using a quantum Monte Carlo simulation and examine how the SMR depends on the amplitude of the spin, thickness of the AFI layer, and randomness of the exchange interactions. Our results for simple quantum spin models provide a useful starting point for understanding SMR measurements on atomic layers of magnetic compounds.
Recent advances in the physics of current-driven antiferromagnetic skyrmions have observed the absence of a Magnus force. We outline the symmetry reasons for this phenomenon, and show that this cancellation will fail in the case of spin polarized currents. Pairing micromagnetic simulations with semiclassical spin wave transport theory, we demonstrate that skyrmions produce a spin-polarized transverse magnon current, and that spin-polarized magnon currents can in turn produce transverse motion of antiferromagnetic skyrmions. We examine qualitative differences in the frequency dependence of the …
A low energy action for double-layer quantum Hall systems at filling fractions $ν= 2/m$ ($m$ an odd integer) is introduced. Interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange induces a phase with canted spin order, and also a spin-singlet phase. Universal properties of zero and finite temperature transitions are obtained. We compute the critical temperature at which the canted order vanishes in a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Implications for recent light scattering experiments at $ν= 2$ are noted.
We show that the quantum anomalous Hall effect almost always occurs in magnetic topological insulator thin films whenever the top and bottom surface layer magnetizations are parallel, independent of the interior layer magnetization configuration. Using this criteria we identify structures that have a quantum anomalous Hall effect even though they have collinear magnetic structures with no net magnetization, and discuss strategies for realizing these interesting magnetic states experimentally.
We search for dynamical magnetoelectric phenomena in three-dimensional correlated systems with spin-orbit coupling. We focus on the antiferromagnetic insulator phases where the dynamical axion field is realized by the fluctuation of the antiferromagnetic order parameter. It is shown that the dynamical chiral magnetic effect, an alternating current generation by magnetic fields, emerges due to the time dependences of the order parameter such as antiferromagnetic resonance. It is also shown that the anomalous Hall effect arises due to the spatial variations of the order parameter such as antifer…
