Recent experiments demonstrate that antiferromagnets exhibit the spin Hall effect. We study a tight-binding model of an antiferromagnet on a square lattice with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and disorder. By exact diagonalization of a finite system connected to reservoirs within the Landauer-B$\ddot{\text{u}}$ttiker formalism, we compute the transverse spin Hall current in response to a longitudinal voltage difference. Surprisingly, the spin Hall conductance can be considerably larger in antiferromagnets than in normal metals. We compare our results to the Berry-phase-induced spin Hall effect governed by the intrinsic contribution in the Kubo formula. The Berry-phase-induced intrinsic spin Hall conductivity in bulk systems shows the opposite behavior: large exchange couplings in AFs drastically reduce the spin Hall current.
We study theoretically and experimentally the spin pumping signals induced by the resonance of canted antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and demonstrate that they can generate easily observable inverse spin-Hall voltages. Using a bilayer of hematite/heavy metal as a model system, we measure at room temperature the antiferromagnetic resonance and an associated inverse spin-Hall voltage, as large as in collinear antiferromagnets. As expected for coherent spin-pumping, we observe that the sign of the inverse spin-Hall voltage provides direct information about the mode handedn…
Dynamical antiferromagnets pump spins efficiently into adjacent conductors as ferromagnets. The high antiferromagnetic resonance frequencies represent a challenge for experimental detection, but magnetic fields can reduce these resonance frequencies. We compute the inverse spin Hall voltages resulting from dynamical spin excitations as a function of a magnetic field along the easy axis and the polarization of the driving AC magnetic field perpendicular to the easy axis. We consider the insulating antiferromagnets MnF$_2$, FeF$_2$, and NiO. Near the spin-flop transition, there is a significant …

We study the anomalous Hall effect and orbital magnetization in chiral antiferromagnets, constructing a simple tight-binding model on a stacked Kagome lattice structure with spin-orbit coupling and the exchange interaction between the localized spins and itinerant electrons. It is shown that the ground state is an orbital ferromagnet with the easy-plane anisotropy. The relation between the orbital magnetization and the configuration of the Weyl points are discussed.
We study the temperature dependence of spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI)/metal bilayer systems. We calculate the amplitude of the SMR signal by using a quantum Monte Carlo simulation and examine how the SMR depends on the amplitude of the spin, thickness of the AFI layer, and randomness of the exchange interactions. Our results for simple quantum spin models provide a useful starting point for understanding SMR measurements on atomic layers of magnetic compounds.
The spontaneous Hall effect is usually governed by three conventional mechanisms, such as the Berry curvature, skew scattering and side jump, which widely exist in ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic materials. However, in this work, based on first principle calculations, we predict a giant crystal Hall effect (CHE) in the antiferromagnetic $γ$-FeMn, which can not be understood by the previous three conventional mechanisms and the Hall angle therein can be as large as 18.4% at low temperature. Furthermore, with Boltzmann transport equation and a tight-binding model, we conclude that, the asymme…
A low energy action for double-layer quantum Hall systems at filling fractions $ν= 2/m$ ($m$ an odd integer) is introduced. Interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange induces a phase with canted spin order, and also a spin-singlet phase. Universal properties of zero and finite temperature transitions are obtained. We compute the critical temperature at which the canted order vanishes in a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Implications for recent light scattering experiments at $ν= 2$ are noted.
We show that the quantum anomalous Hall effect almost always occurs in magnetic topological insulator thin films whenever the top and bottom surface layer magnetizations are parallel, independent of the interior layer magnetization configuration. Using this criteria we identify structures that have a quantum anomalous Hall effect even though they have collinear magnetic structures with no net magnetization, and discuss strategies for realizing these interesting magnetic states experimentally.

CrSb is an attractive material for room-temperature antiferromagnetic spintronic applications because of its high Néel temperature $\sim$700 K and semi-metallic character. We study the magnetic properties of CrSb bilayers on few-layer topological insulator thin films using \emph{ab initio} density functional theory. We find that the intrinsic parts of the total anomalous Hall conductivities of the thin films are non-zero, and approximately quantized. The Néel temperature of CrSb bilayers on few-layer topological insulator thin films is found to be approximately two times larger than that of an…
We investigate the emergence of both quantum anomalous Hall and disorder-induced Anderson Chern insulating phases in two dimensional hexagonal lattices, with antiferromagnetically ordered 3Q state and in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. Using tight-binding modeling, we show that such systems display not only a spin-polarized edge-localized current, the chirality of which is energy dependent but also an impurity-induced transition from trivial metallic to topological insulating regimes, through one edge mode plateau. We compute the gaps' phase diagrams, and demonstrate the robustness of the …
We predict that a temperature gradient can induce a magnon-mediated spin Hall response in an antiferromagnet with non-trivial magnon Berry curvature. We develop a linear response theory which gives a general condition for a Hall current to be well defined, even when the thermal Hall response is forbidden by symmetry. We apply our theory to a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet and discuss a role of magnon edge states in a finite geometry.
We theoretically investigate the transport of magnon orbitals in a honeycomb antiferromagnet. We find that the magnon orbital Berry curvature is finite even without spin-orbit coupling and thus the resultant magnon orbital Hall effect is an intrinsic property of the honeycomb antiferromagnet rooted only in the exchange interaction and the lattice structure. Due to the intrinsic nature of the magnon orbital Hall effect, the magnon orbital Nernst conductivity is estimated to be orders of magnitude larger than the predicted values of the magnon spin Nernst conductivity that requires finite spin-o…
Van der Waals materials are a new platform to study two-dimensional systems, including magnetic order. Since the number of spins is relatively small, measuring the magnetization is challenging. Here we report spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) up to room temperature caused by the magnetic surface texture of exfoliated flakes of magnetic van der Waals materials. For the antiferromagnet FePS3 the SMR amounts to 0.1 % for an applied magnetic field of 7 T at 5 K which implies a substantial canting of the magnetic moments relative to the colinear antiferromagnetic order. The canting is substantial e…
The layer Hall effect describes electrons spontaneously deflected to opposite sides at different layers, which has been experimentally reported in the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ thinfilms under perpendicular electric fields [Gao et al., Nature 595, 521 (2021)]. Here, we reveal a universal origin of the layer Hall effect in terms of the so-called hidden Berry curvature, as well as material design principles. Hence, it gives rise to zero Berry curvature in momentum space but nonzero layer-locked hidden Berry curvature in real space. We show that compared to that of a trivial insulator, the layer Hall effect…
We propose realizing the quantum anomalous Hall effect by proximity coupling graphene to an antiferromagnetic insulator that provides both broken time-reversal symmetry and spin-orbit coupling. We illustrate our idea by performing ab initio calculations for graphene adsorbed on the (111) surface of BiFeO3. In this case, we find that the proximity-induced exchange field in graphene is about 70 meV, and that a topologically nontrivial band gap is opened by Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The size of the gap depends on the separation between the graphene and the thin film substrate, which can be tune…
We develop an effective spin theory to describe magnetic properties of the $ν=2$ Quantum Hall bilayer systems. In the absence of disorder this theory gives quantitative agreement with the results of microscopic Hartree-Fock calculations, and for finite disorder it predicts the existence of a novel spin Bose glass phase. The Bose glass is characterized by the presence of domains of canted antiferromagnetic phase with zero average antiferromagnetic order and short range mean antiferromagnetic correlations. It has infinite antiferromagnetic transverse susceptibility, finite longitudinal spin susc…
Most canted antiferromagnets are also anomalous Hall antiferromagnets (AHE AFMs), i.e. they have an anomalous Hall response and other responses with the same symmetry requirements. We suggest that AHE AFMs are promising materials as hosts for high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effects. By considering models of two-dimensional (001) perovskite layers with strong spin-orbit coupling that isolates an effective total angular momentum $\tilde{j}= \frac{1}{2}$ subspace of the $t_{2g}$ manifold, we propose a strategy to engineering quantum anomalous Hall antiferromagnets.
Currents can induce spin excitations in antiferromagnets, even when they are insulating. We investigate how spin transfer can cause antiferromagnetic resonance in bilayers and trilayers that consist of one antiferromagnetic insulator and one or two metals. An ac voltage applied to the metal generates a spin Hall current that drives the magnetic moments in the antiferromagnet. We consider excitation of the macrospin mode and of transverse standing-spin-wave modes. By solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in the antiferromagnetic insulator and the spin-diffusion equation in the normal met…
Magnetotransport properties are investigated in the bilayer quantum Hall state at the total filling factor $ν=2$. We measured the activation energy elaborately as a function of the total electron density and the density difference between the two layers. Our experimental data demonstrate clearly the emergence of the canted antiferromagnetic (CAF) phase between the ferromagnetic phase and the spin-singlet phase. The stability of the CAF phase is discussed by the comparison between experimental results and theoretical calculations using a Hartree-Fock approximation and an exact diagonalization s…
Unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance (USMR) has been widely reported in the heavy metal / ferromagnet (HM/FM) bilayer systems. We observe the USMR in the Pt/α-Fe2O3 bilayers where the α-Fe2O3 is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator. Systematic field and temperature dependent measurements confirm the magnonic origin of the USMR. The appearance of AFM-USMR is driven by the imbalance of creation and annihilation of AFM magnons by spin orbit torque due to thermal random field. However, unlike its ferromagnetic counterpart, theoretical modeling reveals that the USMR in Pt/α-Fe2O3 is determine…
Here, we propose quantum spin Hall-like phononic states in van der Waals bilayer systems with antiferromagnetic ordering. Antiferromagnetic ordering in bilayer systems with small interlayer interaction makes the total Chern number zero, where the Chern numbers for each layer are opposite to each other. In bilayer CrI3 where antiferromagnetic ordering has been experimentally demonstrated, we show that the quantum spin Hall-like states appear with spatially separated chiral edge modes.
We demonstrate that the nontrivial magnetic texture of antiferromagnetic skyrmions (AFM-Sks) promotes a non-vanishing topological spin Hall effect (TSHE) on the flowing electrons. This results in a substantial enhancement of the non-adiabatic torque and hence improves the skyrmion mobility. This non-adiabatic torque increases when decreasing the skyrmion size, and therefore scaling down results in a much higher torque efficiency. In clean AFM-Sks, we find a significant boost of the TSHE close to van Hove singularity. Interestingly, this effect is enhanced away from the band gap in the presence…
We demonstrate that we can determine the antiferromagnetic anisotropies and the bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya fields of the insulating iron oxide hematite, α-Fe2O3, using a surface sensitive spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) technique. We develop an analytical model that in combination with SMR measurements, allow for the identification of the material parameters of this prototypical antiferromagnet over a wide range of temperatures and magnetic field values. Using devices with different orientations, we demonstrate that the SMR response strongly depends on the direction of the charge current wit…

Recent advances in the physics of current-driven antiferromagnetic skyrmions have observed the absence of a Magnus force. We outline the symmetry reasons for this phenomenon, and show that this cancellation will fail in the case of spin polarized currents. Pairing micromagnetic simulations with semiclassical spin wave transport theory, we demonstrate that skyrmions produce a spin-polarized transverse magnon current, and that spin-polarized magnon currents can in turn produce transverse motion of antiferromagnetic skyrmions. We examine qualitative differences in the frequency dependence of the …
The discovery of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in bulk metallic antiferromagnets (AFMs) motivates the search of the same phenomenon in two-dimensional (2D) systems, where a quantized anomalous Hall conductance can in principle be observed. Here, we present experiments on micro-fabricated devices based on Co$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$, a layered AFM that was recently found to exhibit AHE in bulk crystals below the Néel temperature T$_N$ = 29 K. Transport measurements reveal a pronounced resistivity anisotropy, indicating that upon lowering temperature the electronic coupling between individual atomic lay…

The realization of THz sources is a fundamental aspect for a wide range of applications. Over different approaches, compact THz oscillators can be realized taking advantage of dynamics in antiferromagnetic (AFMs) thin films driven by spin-Hall effect. Here we perform a systematic study of these THz oscillators within a full micromagnetic solver based on the numerical solution of two coupled Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equations, for the case of ultra-thin films, i.e. when the Néel temperature of an AFM is substantially reduced. We have found two different dynamical modes depending on t…
Antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Mn$_3$Sn has shown to generate strong intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at room temperature, due to large momentum-space Berry curvature from the time-reversal symmetry breaking electronic bands of the Kagome planes. This prompts us to investigate intrinsic spin Hall effect, a transverse phenomenon with identical origin as the intrinsic AHE. We report inverse spin Hall effect experiments in nanocrystalline Mn$_3$Sn nanowires at room temperature using spin absorption method which enables us to quantitatively derive both the spin diffusion length and the spin…
Detecting the orientation of the Néel vector is a major research topic in antiferromagnetic spintronics. Here we recognize the intrinsic nonlinear Hall effect, which is independent of the relaxation time, as a prominent contribution to the time-reversal-odd second order conductivity and can be used to detect the flipping of the Néel vector. In contrast, the Berry-curvature-dipole-induced nonlinear Hall effect depends linear on relaxation time and is time-reversal-even. We study the intrinsic nonlinear Hall effect in an antiferromagnetic metal: tetragonal CuMnAs, and show that its nonlinear Hal…
We report on spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) measurements of Pt Hall bars on the antiferromagnetic NiO(111) single crystal. An SMR with a sign opposite of conventional SMR is observed over a wide range of temperatures as well as magnetic fields stronger than 0.25T. The negative sign of the SMR can be explained by the alignment of magnetic moments being almost perpendicular to the external magnetic field within the easy plane (111) of the antiferromagnet. This correlation of magnetic moment alignment and external magnetic field direction is realized just by the easy-plane nature of the materi…
The non-trivial magnon band topology and its consequent responses have been extensively studied in two-dimensional magnetisms. However, the triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF), the best-known frustrated two-dimensional magnet, has received less attention than the closely related Kagome system, because of the spin-chirality cancellation in the umbrella ground state of the undistorted TLAF. In this work, we study the band topology and the thermal Hall effect (THE) of the TLAF with (anti-)trimerization distortion under the external perpendicular magnetic field using the linearized spin wave…
Metallic antiferromagnets with noncollinear orientation of magnetic moments provide a playground for investigating spin-dependent transport properties by analysis of the anomalous Hall effect. The intermetallic compound Mn5Si3 is an intinerant antiferromagnet with collinear and noncollinear magnetic structures due to Mn atoms on two inequivalent lattice sites. Here, magnetotransport measurements on polycrystalline thin films and a single crystal are reported. In all samples, an additional contribution to the anomalous Hall effect attributed to the noncollinear arrangment of magnetic moments is…
We investigate the spin Hall magnetoresistance in thin film bilayer heterostructures of the heavy metal Pt and the antiferromagnetic insulator NiO. While rotating an external magnetic field in the easy plane of NiO, we record the longitudinal and the transverse resistivity of the Pt layer and observe an amplitude modulation consistent with the spin Hall magnetoresistance. In comparison to Pt on collinear ferrimagnets, the modulation is phase shifted by 90° and its amplitude strongly increases with the magnitude of the magnetic field. We explain the observed magnetic field-dependence of the spi…
Electrons, commonly moving along the applied electric field, acquire in certain magnets a dissipationless transverse velocity. This spontaneous Hall effect, discovered more than a century ago, has been understood in terms of the time-reversal symmetry breaking by the internal spin-structure of a ferromagnetic, noncolinear antiferromagnetic or skyrmionic form. Here we identify previously overlooked robust Hall effect mechanism arising from collinear antiferromagnetism combined with nonmagnetic atoms at non-centrosymmetric positions. We predict a large magnitude of this crystal Hall effect in a …
We report systematic measurements of anomalous Hall effect(AHE) and spin orbit torques(SOT) in MnGa/IrMn films,, in which a single MnGa epitaxial layer reveals obvious orbital two-channel Kondo (2CK) effect. As increasing the thickness of the antiferromagnet IrMn, the strong spin Hall effect(SHE)has gradually suppressed the orbital 2CK effect and modified the AHE of MnGa.A scaling involving multiple competing scattering mechanisms has been used to distinguish different contributions to the modified AHE. Finally, the sizeable SOT in the MnGa/IrMn films induced by the strong SHE of IrMn have bee…
The anomalous Hall effect has been indispensable in our understanding of numerous magnetic phenomena. This concerns both ferromagnetic materials, as well as diverse classes of antiferromagnets, where in addition to the anomalous and crystal Hall effects, the topological Hall effect in non-coplanar antiferromagnets has been a subject of intensive research in the past decades. Here, we uncover a new flavour of the anomalous Hall effect in canted spin systems. Using advanced theoretical tools we demonstrate that upon canting, the anomalous Hall effect acquires a contribution which is sensitive to…
We consider the current-induced dynamics of insulating antiferromagnets in a spin Hall geometry. Sufficiently large in-plane currents perpendicular to the Néel order trigger spontaneous oscillations at frequencies between the acoustic and the optical eigenmodes. The direction of the driving current determines the chirality of the excitation. When the current exceeds a threshold, the combined effect of spin pumping and current-induced torques introduces a dynamic feedback that sustains steady-state oscillations with amplitudes controllable via the applied current. The ac voltage output is calcu…
The symmetry considerations that imply a non-zero anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in certain non-collinear antiferromagnets also imply both non-zero orbital magnetization and a net spin magnetization. We have explicitly evaluated the orbital magnetizations of several anomalous Hall effect antiferromagnets and find that they tend to dominate over spin magnetizations, especially so when spin-orbit interactions are weak. Because of the greater relative importance of orbital magnetization the coupling between magnetic order and an external magnetic field is unusual. We explain how magnetic fields can …
