We study numerically synchronization phenomena of spatiotemporal structures, including chimera states, in a two layer network of nonlocally coupled nonlinear chaotic discrete-time systems. Each of the interacting ensembles represents a one layer ring network of nonlocally coupled logistic maps in the chaotic regime. The coupled networks differ in their control parameters that enables one to observe distinct spatiotemporal dynamics in the networks when there is no coupling between them. We explore in detail external and mutual synchronization of chimera structures. The identity of synchronous structures and the estimation of synchronization regions are quantified by calculating the cross-correlation coefficient between relevant oscillators of the networks. We show that for non-identical networks, unidirectional and symmetric couplings lead to external and mutual synchronization between the interacting ensembles, respectively. This is confirmed by identical synchronous structures and by the existence of finite regions of synchronization within which the cross-correlation coefficient is equal to 1. We also show that these findings are qualitatively equivalent to the results of the classical synchronization theory of periodic self-sustained oscillations.
This Letter investigates the nature of synchronization in multilayered and multiplexed populations in which the interlayer interactions are randomly pinned. First, we show that a multilayer network constructed by setting up all-to-all interlayer connections between the two populations leads to explosive synchronization in the two populations successively, leading to the coexistence of coherent and incoherent populations forming chimera states. Second, a multiplex formation of the two populations in which only the mirror nodes are interconnected espouses explosive transitions in the two populat…
We study remote (or relay) synchronization in multilayer networks between parts of one layer and their counterparts in a second layer, where these two layers are not directly connected. A simple realization of such a system is a triplex network where a relay layer in the middle, which is generally not synchronized, acts as a transmitter between two outer layers. We establish time delay in the inter-layer coupling as a powerful tool to control various partial synchronization patterns, in particular chimera states, i.e., complex patterns of coexisting coherent and incoherent domains. We demonstr…
Complex multiplex networks consist of several subnetwork layers, which interact via pairwise inter-layer connections. Relay synchronization between distant layers which are not directly connected, but only via a relay layer, can be observed in multiplex networks. We study three-layer networks of discrete logistic maps, where each individual layer is a nonlocally coupled ring, and demonstrate scenarios of relay synchronization of complex patterns in the outer layers which interact via an intermediate layer. We find regimes of relay synchronization for chimera states, i.e., patterns of coexistin…
We study numerically the dynamics of a network made of two coupled one-dimensional ensembles of discrete-time systems. The first ensemble is represented by a ring of nonlocally coupled Henon maps, and the second one - by a ring of nonlocally coupled Lozi maps. We find that the network of coupled ensembles can realize all the spatio-temporal structures which are observed both in the Henon map ensemble and in the Lozi map ensemble when uncoupled. Moreover, we reveal a new type of spatiotemporal structure, a solitary state chimera, in the considered network. We also establish and describe the eff…
We study various relay synchronization scenarios in a three-layer network, where the middle (relay) layer is a single node, i.e. a hub, The two remote layers consist of non-locally coupled rings of FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators modelling neuronal dynamics. All nodes of the remote layers are connected to the hub. The role of the hub and its importance for the existence of chimera states is investigated in dependence on the inter-layer coupling strength and inter-layer time delay. Tongue-like regions in the parameter plane exhibiting double chimeras, i.e., chimera states in the remote layers whose…
Frequency plays a crucial role in exhibiting various collective dynamics in the coexisting co- and counter-rotating (CR) systems. To illustrate the impact of CR frequencies, we consider a network of non-identical and globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators with additional perturbation. Primarily, we investigate the dynamical transitions in the absence of perturbation, demonstrating that the transition from desynchronized state to cluster oscillatory state occurs through an interesting partial synchronization state. Followed by this, the system dynamics transits to amplitude death and oscill…
We study chimera states, which are partial synchronization patterns consisting of spatially coexisting domains of coherent (synchronized) and incoherent (desynchronized) dynamics, in ring networks of FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators with fractal connectivities. In particular, we focus on the interplay of time delay in the coupling term and the network topology. In the parameter plane of coupling strength and delay time we find tongue-like regions of existence of chimera states alternating with regions of coherent dynamics. We show analytically and numerically that the period of the synchronized dyn…
We present results obtained for a network of four delay-coupled lasers modelled by Lang-Kobayashi-type equations. We find small chimera states consisting of a pair of synchronized lasers and two unsynchronized lasers. One class of these small chimera states can be understood as intermediate steps on the route from synchronization to desynchronization and we present the entire chain of bifurcations giving birth to them. This class of small chimeras can exhibit limit-cycle or quasiperiodic dynamics. A second type of small chimera states exists apparently disconnected from any region of synchroni…
Chimera states are an example of intriguing partial synchronization patterns emerging in networks of identical oscillators. They consist of spatially coexisting domains of coherent (synchronized) and incoherent (desynchronized) dynamics. We analyze chimera states in networks of Van der Pol oscillators with hierarchical connectivities, and elaborate the role of time delay introduced in the coupling term. In the parameter plane of coupling strength and delay time we find tongue-like regions of existence of chimera states alternating with regions of existence of coherent travelling waves. We demo…
Coupled hair cells of the auditory and vestibular systems perform the crucial task of converting the energy of sound waves and ground-borne vibrations into ionic currents. We mechanically couple groups of living, active hair cells with artificial membranes, thus mimicking in vitro the coupled dynamical system. We identify chimera states and frequency clustering in the dynamics of these coupled nonlinear, autonomous oscillators. We find that these dynamical states can be reproduced by our numerical model with heterogeneity of the parameters. Further, we find that this model is most sensitive to…
We propose a robust universal approach to identify multiple dynamical states, including stationary and travelling chimera states based on an adaptive coherence measure. Our approach allows automatic disambiguation of synchronized clusters, travelling waves, chimera states, and asynchronous regimes. In addition, our method can determine the number of clusters in the case of cluster synchronization. We further couple our approach with a new speed calculation method for travelling chimeras. We validate our approach by an example of a ring network of type II Morris-Lecar neurons with asymmetrical …
The emergence of order in collective dynamics is a fascinating phenomenon that characterizes many natural systems consisting of coupled entities. Synchronization is such an example where individuals, usually represented by either linear or nonlinear oscillators, can spontaneously act coherently with each other when the interactions' configuration fulfills certain conditions. However, synchronization is not always perfect, and the coexistence of coherent and incoherent oscillators, broadly known in the literature as chimera states, is also possible. Although several attempts have been made to e…
A nonlinear oscillator model with negative time-delayed feedback is studied numeri- cally under external deterministic and stochastic forcing. It is found that in the unforced system complex partial synchronization patterns like chimera states as well as salt-and-pepper like soli- tary states arise on the route from regular dynamics to spatio-temporal chaos. The control of the dynamics by external periodic forcing is demonstrated by numerical simulations. It is shown that one-cluster and multi-cluster chimeras can be achieved by adjusting the external forcing frequency to appropriate resonance…
We investigate the influence of time-delayed coupling in a ring network of non-locally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators upon chimera states, i.e., space-time patterns with coexisting partially coherent and partially incoherent domains. We focus on amplitude chimeras which exhibit incoherent behavior with respect to the amplitude rather than the phase and are transient patterns, and show that their lifetime can be significantly enhanced by coupling delay. To characterize their transition to phase-lag synchronization (coherent traveling waves) and other coherent structures, we generalize the Ku…
We report the occurrence of a self-emerging frequency chimera state in spatially extended systems of coupled oscillators, where the coherence and incoherence are defined with respect to the emergent frequency of the oscillations. This is generated by the local coupling among nonlinear oscillators evolving under differing dynamical timescales starting from random initial conditions. We show how they self-organize to structured patterns with spatial domains of coherence that are in frequency synchronization, coexisting with domains that are incoherent in frequencies. Our study has relevance in u…
We propose Moebius maps as a tool to model synchronization phenomena in coupled phase oscillators. Not only does the map provide fast computation of phase synchronization, it also reflects the underlying group structure of the sinusoidally coupled continuous phase dynamics. We study map versions of various known continuous-time collective dynamics, such as the synchronization transition in the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model of non-identical oscillators, chimeras in two coupled populations of identical phase oscillators, and Kuramoto-Battogtokh chimeras on a ring, and demonstrate similarities and dif…
Cluster synchronization is a phenomenon in which a network self-organizes into a pattern of synchronized sets. It has been shown that diverse patterns of stable cluster synchronization can be captured by symmetries of the network. Here we establish a theoretical basis to divide an arbitrary pattern of symmetry clusters into independently synchronizable cluster sets, in which the synchronization stability of the individual clusters in each set is decoupled from that in all the other sets. Using this framework, we suggest a new approach to find permanently stable chimera states by capturing two …

We numerically study the synchronization of an identical population of Kuramoto-Sakaguchi phase oscillators in Watts-Strogatz networks. We find that, unlike random networks, phase-shift could enhance the synchronization in small-world networks. We also observe abrupt phase transition with hysteresis at some values of phase shifts in small-world networks, signs of an explosive phase transition. Moreover, we report the emergence of Chimera states at some values of phase-shift close to the transition points, which consist of spatially coexisting synchronized and desynchronized domains.
We found that a network-organized metapopulation of cooperators, defectors and destructive agents playing the public goods game with mutations, can collectively reach global synchronization or chimera states. Global synchronization is accompanied by a collective periodic burst of cooperation, whereas chimera states reflect the tendency of the networked metapopulation to be fragmented in clusters of synchronous and incoherent bursts of cooperation. Numerical simulations have shown that the system's dynamics alternates between these two steady states through a first order transition. Depending o…
The effects of nonlocal and reflecting connectivities have been previously investigated in coupled Leaky Integrate-and-Fire (LIF) elements, which assimilate the exchange of electrical signals between neurons. In this work we investigate the effect of diagonal coupling inspired by findings in brain neuron connectivity. Multi-chimera states are reported both for the simple diagonal and combined nonlocal-diagonal connectivities and we determine the range of optimal parameter regions where chimera states appear. Overall, the measures of coherence indicate that as the coupling range increases (belo…
In this paper, we have introduced and investigated the collective behavior of a network of memristive Hindmarsh-Rose (HR) neurons. The proposed model was built considering the memristive autapse of the traditional 2D HR neuron. Using the one-parameter bifurcation diagram and its corresponding maximal Lyapunov exponent graph, we showed that the proposed model was able to exhibit a reverse period doubling route to chaos, phenomenon of interior and exterior crises. Three different configurations of the ring-star network of the memristive HR neuron model, including ring-star, ring, and star, have …
We show that amplitude-mediated phase chimeras and amplitude chimeras can occur in the same network of nonlocally coupled identical oscillators. These are two different partial synchronization patterns, where spatially coherent domains coexist with incoherent domains and coherence/incoherence refer to both amplitude and phase or only the amplitude of the oscillators, respectively. By changing the coupling strength the two types of chimera patterns can be induced. We find numerically that the amplitude chimeras are not short-living transients but can have a long lifetime. Also, we observe varia…
We study the emergence of the traveling chimera state in a two-dimensional network of Hindmarsh-Rose burst neurons with the mutual presence of local and non-local couplings. We show that in the unique presence of the non-local chemical coupling modeled by a nonlinear function, the traveling chimera phenomenon occurs with a displacement in both directions of the plane of the grid. The introduction of local electrical coupling shows that the mutual influence of the two types of coupling can, for certain values, generate traveling chimera, imperfect-traveling, traveling multi-clusters, and altern…
Chimera states have been a vibrant subject of research in the recent past, but the analytical treatment of transitions from chimeras to coherent states remains a challenge. Here we analytically derive the necessary conditions for this transition by means of the coherent stability function approach, which is akin to the master stability function approach that is traditionally used to study the stability of synchronization in coupled oscillators. In chimera states, there is typically at least one group of oscillators that evolves in a drifting, random manner, while other groups of oscillators fo…
We investigate the emergence of different kinds of imperfect synchronized states and chimera states in two interacting populations of nonlocally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. We find that the complete synchronization in population-I and existence of solitary oscillators which escape from the synchronized group in population-II lead to imperfect synchronized states for sufficiently small values of nonisochronicity parameter. Interestingly, on increasing the strength of this parameter further there occurs an onset of mixed imperfect synchronized states where the solitary oscillators occur f…
Recent research has led to the discovery of fundamental new phenomena in network synchronization, including chimera states, explosive synchronization, and asymmetry-induced synchronization. Each of these phenomena has thus far been observed only in systems designed to exhibit that one phenomenon, which raises the questions of whether they are mutually compatible and, if so, under what conditions they co-occur. Here, we introduce a class of remarkably simple oscillator networks that concurrently exhibit all of these phenomena. The dynamical units consist of pairs of nonidentical phase oscillato…
Nonlocally coupled oscillators with a phase lag self-organize into various patterns such as global synchronization, the twisted state, and the chimera state. In this paper, we consider nonlocally coupled oscillators that move on a ring by randomly exchanging their positions with the neighbors, and investigate the combined effects of phase lag and mobility on the collective phase dynamics. Spanning the whole range of phase lag and mobility, we show that mobility promotes synchronization for an attractive coupling, while it destroys coherence for a repulsive coupling. The transition behaviors ar…

Several complex systems can be modeled as large networks in which the state of the nodes continuously evolves through interactions among neighboring nodes, forming a high-dimensional nonlinear dynamical system. One of the main challenges of Network Science consists in predicting the impact of network topology and dynamics on the evolution of the states and, especially, on the emergence of collective phenomena, such as synchronization. We address this problem by proposing a Dynamics Approximate Reduction Technique (DART) that maps high-dimensional (complete) dynamics unto low-dimensional (reduc…
We show that dynamical clustering, where a system segregates into distinguishable subsets of synchronized elements, and chimera states, where differentiated subsets of synchronized and desynchronized elements coexist, can emerge in networks of globally coupled robust-chaos oscillators. We describe the collective behavior of a model of globally coupled robust-chaos maps in terms of statistical quantities, and characterize clusters, chimera states, synchronization, and incoherence on the space of parameters of the system. We employ the analogy between the local dynamics of a system of globally c…
We investigated interactions within chimera states in a phase oscillator network with two coupled subpopulations. To quantify interactions within and between these subpopulations, we estimated the corresponding (delayed) mutual information that -- in general -- quantifies the capacity or the maximum rate at which information can be transferred to recover a sender's information at the receiver with a vanishingly low error probability. After verifying their equivalence with estimates based on the continuous phase data, we determined the mutual information using the time points at which the indiv…
We consider a social-type network of coupled phase oscillators. Such a network consists of an active core of mutually interacting elements, and of a flock of passive units, which follow the driving from the active elements, but otherwise are not interacting. We consider a ring geometry with a long-range coupling, where active oscillators form a fluctuating chimera pattern. We show that the passive elements are strongly correlated. This is explained by negative transversal Lyapunov exponents.
The notion of a weak chimeras provides a tractable definition for chimera states in networks of finitely many phase oscillators. Here we generalize the definition of a weak chimera to a more general class of equivariant dynamical systems by characterizing solutions in terms of the isotropy of their angular frequency vector - for coupled phase oscillators the angular frequency vector is given by the average of the vector field along a trajectory. Symmetries of solutions automatically imply angular frequency synchronization. We show that the presence of such symmetries is not necessary by giving…
We consider chimera states of coupled identical phase oscillators where some oscillators are phase synchronized while others are desynchronized. It is known that chimera states of non-locally coupled Kuramoto--Sakaguchi oscillators in arrays of finite size are chaotic transients when the phase lag parameter $α\in (0, π/2)$; after a transient time, all the oscillators are phase synchronized, with the transient time increasing exponentially with the number of oscillators. In this work, we consider a small array of six non-locally coupled oscillators with the phase lag parameter $α\in (π/2, π)$ i…
Interaction within an ensemble of coupled nonlinear oscillators induces a variety of collective behaviors. One of the most fascinating is a chimera state which manifests the coexistence of spatially distinct populations of coherent and incoherent elements. Understanding of the emergent chimera behavior in controlled experiments or real systems requires a focus on the consideration of heterogeneous network models. In this study, we explore the transitions in a heterogeneous Kuramoto model under the monotonical increase of the coupling strength and specifically find that this system exhibits a f…
We experimentally demonstrate that networks of identical photonic spiking neurons based on coupled degenerate parametric oscillators can show various chimera states, in which, depending on their local synchronization and desynchronization, different kinds of spiking dynamics can develop in a self-organized manner. Even when only a static interaction is implemented, through synchronized inputs from connected neurons, the spiking mode of photonic neurons can be spontaneously and adaptively changed between the Class-I and Class-II modes classified by A. L. Hodgkin. This spontaneous spiking-mode s…
A non-autonomous dynamical system is proposed to study the synchronization in networks of mutually coupled optically modulated hyperchaotic CO$_2$ lasers. By the method of master stability function (MSF) it is shown that the stable synchronous state can be reached for both the ring of diffusively coupled (RDC) and star-coupled (SC) networks of at most $24$ nodes or oscillators. A numerical simulation of the coupled $24$ hyperchaotic CO$_2$ lasers is also performed to show that the corresponding synchronization error $\lesssim10^{-6}$. Furthermore, the chimera states of the networks are found t…
We consider a pair of collectively oscillating networks of dynamical elements and optimize their internetwork coupling for efficient mutual synchronization based on the phase reduction theory developed in Ref. [H. Nakao, S. Yasui, M. Ota, K. Arai, and Y. Kawamura, Chaos 28, 045103 (2018)]. The dynamical equations describing a pair of weakly coupled networks are reduced to a pair of coupled phase equations, and the linear stability of the synchronized state between the networks is represented as a function of the internetwork coupling matrix. We seek the optimal coupling by minimizing the Frobe…
We study the dynamics of a multilayer network of chaotic oscillators subject to an amplification. Previous studies have proven that multilayer networks present phenomena such as synchronization, cluster and chimera states. Here we consider a network with two layers of Roessler chaotic oscillators as well as applications to multilayer networks of chaotic jerk and Lienard oscillators. Intralayer coupling is considered to be all to all in the case of Roessler oscillators, a ring for jerk oscillators and global mean field coupling in the case of Lienard, the interlayer coupling is unidirectional i…
We discuss synchronization patterns in networks of FitzHugh-Nagumo and Leaky Integrate-and-Fire oscillators coupled in a two-dimensional toroidal geometry. Common feature between the two models is the presence of fast and slow dynamics, a typical characteristic of neurons. Earlier studies have demonstrated that both models when coupled nonlocally in one-dimensional ring networks produce chimera states for a large range of parameter values. In this study, we give evidence of a plethora of two-dimensional chimera patterns of various shapes including spots, rings, stripes, and grids, observed in …
In this article, we report the development of an emerging dynamical state, namely, the alternating chimera, in a network of identical neuronal systems induced by an external electromagnetic field. Owing to this interaction scenario, the nonlinear neuronal oscillators are coupled indirectly via electromagnetic induction with magnetic flux, through which neurons communicate in spite of the absent physical connections among them. The evolution of each neuron, here, is described by the three-dimensional Hindmarsh-Rose dynamics. We demonstrate that the presence of such non-locally and globally inte…
