We propose a robust universal approach to identify multiple dynamical states, including stationary and travelling chimera states based on an adaptive coherence measure. Our approach allows automatic disambiguation of synchronized clusters, travelling waves, chimera states, and asynchronous regimes. In addition, our method can determine the number of clusters in the case of cluster synchronization. We further couple our approach with a new speed calculation method for travelling chimeras. We validate our approach by an example of a ring network of type II Morris-Lecar neurons with asymmetrical nonlocal inhibitory connections where we identify a rich repertoire of coherent and wave states. We propose that the method is robust for the networks of phase oscillators and extends to a general class of relaxation oscillator networks.
We investigate the emergence of different kinds of imperfect synchronized states and chimera states in two interacting populations of nonlocally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. We find that the complete synchronization in population-I and existence of solitary oscillators which escape from the synchronized group in population-II lead to imperfect synchronized states for sufficiently small values of nonisochronicity parameter. Interestingly, on increasing the strength of this parameter further there occurs an onset of mixed imperfect synchronized states where the solitary oscillators occur f…
We show the existence of chimera-like states in two distinct groups of identical populations of globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. The existence of chimera-like states occurs only for a small range of frequency difference between the two populations and these states disappear for an increase of mismatch between the frequencies. Here the chimera-like states are characterized by the synchronized oscillations in one population and desynchronized oscillations in another population. We also find that such states observed in two distinct groups of identical populations of nonlocally coupled…
We report the emergence of a collective dynamical state, namely phase-flip chimera, from an en- semble of identical nonlinear oscillators that are coupled indirectly via the dynamical variables from a common environment, which in turn are nonlocally coupled. The phase-flip chimera is character- ized by the coexistence of two adjacent out-of-phase synchronized coherent domains interspersed by an incoherent domain, in which the nearby oscillators are in out-of-phase synchronized states. At- tractors of the coherent domains are either from the same or different basins of attractions depending on …
We report a novel spatiotemporal state, namely the chimera-like incongruous coexistence of {\it synchronized oscillation} and {\it stable steady state} (CSOD) in a realistic ecological network of nonlocally coupled oscillators. Unlike the {\it chimera} and {\it chimera death} state, in the CSOD state identical oscillators are self-organized into two coexisting spatially separated domains: In one domain neighboring oscillators show synchronized oscillation and in another domain the neighboring oscillators randomly populate either a synchronized oscillating state or a stable steady state (we cal…
We study chimera states, which are partial synchronization patterns consisting of spatially coexisting domains of coherent (synchronized) and incoherent (desynchronized) dynamics, in ring networks of FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators with fractal connectivities. In particular, we focus on the interplay of time delay in the coupling term and the network topology. In the parameter plane of coupling strength and delay time we find tongue-like regions of existence of chimera states alternating with regions of coherent dynamics. We show analytically and numerically that the period of the synchronized dyn…
Chimera states are an example of intriguing partial synchronization patterns emerging in networks of identical oscillators. They consist of spatially coexisting domains of coherent (synchronized) and incoherent (desynchronized) dynamics. We analyze chimera states in networks of Van der Pol oscillators with hierarchical connectivities, and elaborate the role of time delay introduced in the coupling term. In the parameter plane of coupling strength and delay time we find tongue-like regions of existence of chimera states alternating with regions of existence of coherent travelling waves. We demo…
We investigate the occurrence of collective dynamical states such as transient amplitude chimera, stable amplitude chimera and imperfect breathing chimera states in a \textit{locally coupled} network of Stuart-Landau oscillators. In an imperfect breathing chimera state, the synchronized group of oscillators exhibits oscillations with large amplitudes while the desynchronized group of oscillators oscillates with small amplitudes and this behavior of coexistence of synchronized and desynchronized oscillations fluctuates with time. Then we analyze the stability of the amplitude chimera states und…
We study remote (or relay) synchronization in multilayer networks between parts of one layer and their counterparts in a second layer, where these two layers are not directly connected. A simple realization of such a system is a triplex network where a relay layer in the middle, which is generally not synchronized, acts as a transmitter between two outer layers. We establish time delay in the inter-layer coupling as a powerful tool to control various partial synchronization patterns, in particular chimera states, i.e., complex patterns of coexisting coherent and incoherent domains. We demonstr…
Oscillatory media can exhibit the coexistence of synchronized and desynchronized regions, so-called chimera states, for uniform parameters and symmetrical coupling. In a phase-balanced chimera state, where the totals of synchronized and desynchronized regions, respectively, are of the same size, the symmetry of the system predicts that interchanging both phases still gives a solution to the underlying equations. We observe this kind of interchange as a self-emerging phenomenon in an oscillatory medium with nonlinear global coupling. An interplay between local and global couplings renders the f…
Systems of nonlocally coupled oscillators can exhibit complex spatio-temporal patterns, called chimera states, which consist of coexisting domains of spatially coherent (synchronized) and incoherent dynamics. We report on a novel form of these states, found in a widely used model of a limit-cycle oscillator if one goes beyond the limit of weak coupling typical for phase oscillators. Then patches of synchronized dynamics appear within the incoherent domain giving rise to a multi-chimera state. We find that, depending on the coupling strength and range, different multi-chimeras arise in a transi…
We consider two coupled populations of leaky integrate-and-fire neurons. Depending on the coupling strength, mean fields generated by these populations can have incommensurate frequencies, or become frequency locked. In the observed 2:1 locking state of the mean fields, individual neurons in one population are asynchronous with the mean fields, while in another populations they have the same frequency as the mean field. These synchronous neurons form a chimera state, where part of them build a fully synchronized cluster, while other remain scattered. We explain this chimera as a marginal one, …
We show that dynamical clustering, where a system segregates into distinguishable subsets of synchronized elements, and chimera states, where differentiated subsets of synchronized and desynchronized elements coexist, can emerge in networks of globally coupled robust-chaos oscillators. We describe the collective behavior of a model of globally coupled robust-chaos maps in terms of statistical quantities, and characterize clusters, chimera states, synchronization, and incoherence on the space of parameters of the system. We employ the analogy between the local dynamics of a system of globally c…
We consider chimera states of coupled identical phase oscillators where some oscillators are phase synchronized while others are desynchronized. It is known that chimera states of non-locally coupled Kuramoto--Sakaguchi oscillators in arrays of finite size are chaotic transients when the phase lag parameter $α\in (0, π/2)$; after a transient time, all the oscillators are phase synchronized, with the transient time increasing exponentially with the number of oscillators. In this work, we consider a small array of six non-locally coupled oscillators with the phase lag parameter $α\in (π/2, π)$ i…
Complex spatiotemporal patterns, called chimera states, consist of coexisting coherent and incoherent domains and can be observed in networks of coupled oscillators. The interplay of synchrony and asynchrony in complex brain networks is an important aspect in studies of both brain function and disease. We analyse the collective dynamics of FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons in complex networks motivated by its potential application to epileptology and epilepsy surgery. We compare two topologies: an empirical structural neural connectivity derived from diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and a m…
For a network of generic oscillators with nonlocal topology and symmetry-breaking coupling we establish novel partially coherent inhomogeneous spatial patterns, which combine the features of chimera states (coexisting incongruous coherent and incoherent domains) and oscillation death (oscillation suppression), which we call chimera death. We show that due to the interplay of nonlocality and breaking of rotational symmetry by the coupling two distinct scenarios from oscillatory behavior to a stationary state regime are possible: a transition from an amplitude chimera to chimera death via in-pha…

We find chimera states with respect to amplitude dynamics in a network of Stuart-Landau oscillators. These partially coherent and partially incoherent spatio-temporal patterns appear due to the interplay of nonlocal network topology and symmetry-breaking coupling. As the coupling range is increased, the oscillations are quenched, amplitude chimeras disappear and the network enters a symmetry-breaking stationary state. This particular regime is a novel pattern which we call chimera death. It is characterized by the coexistence of spatially coherent and incoherent inhomogeneous steady states and…
Chimera states, i.e., dynamical states composed of coexisting synchronous and asynchronous oscillations, have been reported to exist in diverse topologies of oscillators in simulations and experiments. Two-population networks with distinct intra - and inter-population coupling have served as simple model systems for chimera states since they possess an invariant synchronized manifold, in contrast to networks on a spatial structure. Here, we study dynamical and spectral properties of finite-sized chimeras on two-population networks. First, we elucidate how the Kuramoto order parameter of the fi…
In the present article, we demonstrate the emergence and existence of the spiral wave chimera-like transient pattern in coupled ecological systems, composed of prey-predator patches, where the patches are connected in a three-dimensional medium through local diffusion. We explore the transition scenarios among the several collective dynamical behaviors together with transient spiral wave chimera-like states and investigate the long time behavior of these states. The transition from the transient spiral chimera-like pattern to the long time synchronized or desynchronized pattern appears through…
The coexistence of coherently and incoherently oscillating parts in a system of identical oscillators with symmetrical coupling, i.e., a chimera state, is even observable with uniform global coupling. We address the question of the prerequisites for these states to occur in globally coupled systems. By analyzing two different types of chimera states found for nonlinear global coupling, we show that a clustering mechanism to split the ensemble into two groups is needed as a first step. In fact, the chimera states inherit properties from the cluster states in which they originate. Remarkably, th…
We present results obtained for a network of four delay-coupled lasers modelled by Lang-Kobayashi-type equations. We find small chimera states consisting of a pair of synchronized lasers and two unsynchronized lasers. One class of these small chimera states can be understood as intermediate steps on the route from synchronization to desynchronization and we present the entire chain of bifurcations giving birth to them. This class of small chimeras can exhibit limit-cycle or quasiperiodic dynamics. A second type of small chimera states exists apparently disconnected from any region of synchroni…
We study various relay synchronization scenarios in a three-layer network, where the middle (relay) layer is a single node, i.e. a hub, The two remote layers consist of non-locally coupled rings of FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators modelling neuronal dynamics. All nodes of the remote layers are connected to the hub. The role of the hub and its importance for the existence of chimera states is investigated in dependence on the inter-layer coupling strength and inter-layer time delay. Tongue-like regions in the parameter plane exhibiting double chimeras, i.e., chimera states in the remote layers whose…
Coupled phase oscillators model a variety of dynamical phenomena in nature and technological applications. Non-local coupling gives rise to chimera states which are characterized by a distinct part of phase-synchronized oscillators while the remaining ones move incoherently. Here, we apply the idea of control to chimera states: using gradient dynamics to exploit drift of a chimera, it will attain any desired target position. Through control, chimera states become functionally relevant; for example, the controlled position of localized synchrony may encode information and perform computations. …

The emergence of order in collective dynamics is a fascinating phenomenon that characterizes many natural systems consisting of coupled entities. Synchronization is such an example where individuals, usually represented by either linear or nonlinear oscillators, can spontaneously act coherently with each other when the interactions' configuration fulfills certain conditions. However, synchronization is not always perfect, and the coexistence of coherent and incoherent oscillators, broadly known in the literature as chimera states, is also possible. Although several attempts have been made to e…
Collective behavior among coupled dynamical units can emerge in various forms as a result of different coupling topologies as well as different types of coupling functions. Chimera states have recently received ample attention as a fascinating manifestation of collective behavior, in particular describing a symmetry breaking spatiotemporal pattern where synchronized and desynchronized states coexist in a network of coupled oscillators. In this perspective, we review the emergence of different chimera states, focusing on the effects of different coupling topologies that describe the interaction…
We experimentally demonstrate that networks of identical photonic spiking neurons based on coupled degenerate parametric oscillators can show various chimera states, in which, depending on their local synchronization and desynchronization, different kinds of spiking dynamics can develop in a self-organized manner. Even when only a static interaction is implemented, through synchronized inputs from connected neurons, the spiking mode of photonic neurons can be spontaneously and adaptively changed between the Class-I and Class-II modes classified by A. L. Hodgkin. This spontaneous spiking-mode s…
Coupled oscillators, even identical ones, display a wide range of behaviours, among them synchrony and incoherence. The 2002 discovery of so-called chimera states, states of coexisting synchronized and unsynchronized oscillators, provided a possible link between the two and definitely showed that different parts of the same ensemble can sustain qualitatively different forms of motion. Here, we demonstrate that globally coupled identical oscillators can express a range of coexistence patterns more comprehensive than chimeras. A hierarchy of such states evolves from the fully synchronized soluti…
In this paper, we have introduced and investigated the collective behavior of a network of memristive Hindmarsh-Rose (HR) neurons. The proposed model was built considering the memristive autapse of the traditional 2D HR neuron. Using the one-parameter bifurcation diagram and its corresponding maximal Lyapunov exponent graph, we showed that the proposed model was able to exhibit a reverse period doubling route to chaos, phenomenon of interior and exterior crises. Three different configurations of the ring-star network of the memristive HR neuron model, including ring-star, ring, and star, have …
We investigated interactions within chimera states in a phase oscillator network with two coupled subpopulations. To quantify interactions within and between these subpopulations, we estimated the corresponding (delayed) mutual information that -- in general -- quantifies the capacity or the maximum rate at which information can be transferred to recover a sender's information at the receiver with a vanishingly low error probability. After verifying their equivalence with estimates based on the continuous phase data, we determined the mutual information using the time points at which the indiv…
We have investigated synchronized pattern in a network of Thomas oscillators coupled with sinusoidal nonlinear coupling. Pattern like chimera states are not only observed for many non-locally coupled oscillators but there is a signature of it even for locally coupled few oscillators. For certain range of intermediate coupling, clusters are also observed. These patterns do resemble with motion of real self propelled coupled dynamical systems.
Cluster synchronization is a phenomenon in which a network self-organizes into a pattern of synchronized sets. It has been shown that diverse patterns of stable cluster synchronization can be captured by symmetries of the network. Here we establish a theoretical basis to divide an arbitrary pattern of symmetry clusters into independently synchronizable cluster sets, in which the synchronization stability of the individual clusters in each set is decoupled from that in all the other sets. Using this framework, we suggest a new approach to find permanently stable chimera states by capturing two …
The simplest network of coupled phase-oscillators exhibiting chimera states is given by two populations with disparate intra- and inter-population coupling strengths. We explore the effects of heterogeneous coupling phase-lags between the two populations. Such heterogeneity arises naturally in various settings, for example as an approximation to transmission delays, excitatory-inhibitory interactions, or as amplitude and phase responses of oscillators with electrical or mechanical coupling. We find that breaking the phase-lag symmetry results in a variety of states with uniform and non-uniform…
Chimera state is defined as a mixed type of collective state in which synchronized and desynchronized subpopulations of a network of coupled oscillators coexist and the appearance of such anomalous behavior has strong connection to diverse neuronal developments. Most of the previous studies on chimera states are not extensively done in two-dimensional ensembles of coupled oscillators by taking neuronal systems with nonlinear coupling function into account while such ensembles of oscillators are more realistic from a neurobiological point of view. In this paper, we report the emergence and exis…
We report a novel mechanism for the formation of chimera states, a peculiar spatiotemporal pattern with coexisting synchronized and incoherent domains found in ensembles of identical oscillators. Considering Stuart-Landau oscillators we demonstrate that a nonlinear global coupling can induce this symmetry breaking. We find chimera states also in a spatially extended system, a modified complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. This theoretical prediction is validated with an oscillatory electrochemical system, the electrooxidation of silicon, where the spontaneous formation of chimeras is observed with…
Chimera states, namely the coexistence of coherent and incoherent behavior, were previously analyzed in complex networks. However, they have not been extensively studied in modular networks. Here, we consider the neural network of the \textit{C.elegans} soil worm, organized into six interconnected communities, where neurons obey chaotic bursting dynamics. Neurons are assumed to be connected with electrical synapses within their communities and with chemical synapses across them. As our numerical simulations reveal, the coaction of these two types of coupling can shape the dynamics in such a wa…
We numerically study the synchronization of an identical population of Kuramoto-Sakaguchi phase oscillators in Watts-Strogatz networks. We find that, unlike random networks, phase-shift could enhance the synchronization in small-world networks. We also observe abrupt phase transition with hysteresis at some values of phase shifts in small-world networks, signs of an explosive phase transition. Moreover, we report the emergence of Chimera states at some values of phase-shift close to the transition points, which consist of spatially coexisting synchronized and desynchronized domains.
We investigate the effect of repulsive coupling together with an attractive coupling in a network of nonlocally coupled oscillators. To understand the complex interaction between these two couplings we introduce a control parameter in the repulsive coupling which plays a crucial role in inducing distinct complex collective patterns. In particular, we show the emergence of various cluster chimera death states through a dynamically distinct transition route, namely the oscillatory cluster state and coherent oscillation death state as a function of the repulsive coupling in the presence of the at…
We study the collective dynamics of identical phase oscillators on globally coupled networks whose interactions are asymmetric and mediated by positive and negative couplings. We split the set of oscillators into two interconnected subpopulations. In this setup, oscillators belonging to the same group interact via symmetric couplings while the interaction between subpopulations occurs in an asymmetric fashion. By employing the dimensional reduction scheme of the Ott-Antonsen (OA) theory, we verify the existence of traveling-wave and $π$-states, in addition to the classical fully synchronized a…
Janus oscillators have been recently introduced as a remarkably simple phase oscillator model that exhibits non-trivial dynamical patterns -- such as chimeras, explosive transitions, and asymmetry-induced synchronization -- that once were only observed in specifically tailored models. Here we study ensembles of Janus oscillators coupled on large homogeneous and heterogeneous networks. By virtue of the Ott-Antonsen reduction scheme, we find that the rich dynamics of Janus oscillators persists in the thermodynamic limit of random regular, Erdős-Rényi and scale-free random networks. We uncover fo…
