The conditioning of the linear finite volume element discretization for general diffusion equations is studied on arbitrary simplicial meshes. The condition number is defined as the ratio of the maximal singular value of the stiffness matrix to the minimal eigenvalue of its symmetric part. This definition is motivated by the fact that the convergence rate of the generalized minimal residual method for the corresponding linear systems is determined by the ratio. An upper bound for the ratio is established by developing an upper bound for the maximal singular value and a lower bound for the minimal eigenvalue of the symmetric part. It is shown that the bound depends on three factors, the number of the elements in the mesh, the mesh nonuniformity measured in the Euclidean metric, and the mesh nonuniformity measured in the metric specified by the inverse diffusion matrix. It is also shown that the diagonal scaling can effectively eliminates the effects from the mesh nonuniformity measured in the Euclidean metric. Numerical results for a selection of examples in one, two, and three dimensions are presented.

We conduct a condition number analysis of a Hybrid High-Order (HHO) scheme for the Poisson problem. We find the condition number of the statically condensed system to be independent of the number of faces in each element, or the relative size between an element and its faces. The dependence of the condition number on the polynomial degree is tracked. Next, we consider HHO schemes on cut background meshes, which are commonly used in unfitted discretisations. It is well known that the linear systems obtained on these meshes can be arbitrarily ill-conditioned due to the presence of sliver-cut and…
We review some recent work on the enhancement and application of both r- and h- adaptation techniques, benefitting of the functionalities of the remeshing platform Mmg: www.mmgtools.org. Several contributions revolve around the level-set adaptation capabilities of the platform. These have been used to identify complex surfaces and then to either produce conformal 3D meshes, or to define a metric allowing to perform h-adaptation and control geometrical errors in the context of immersed boundary flow simulations. The performance of the recent distributed memory parallel implementation ParMmg is …
The conditioning of implicit Runge-Kutta (RK) integration for linear finite element approximation of diffusion equations on general anisotropic meshes is investigated. Bounds are established for the condition number of the resulting linear system with and without diagonal preconditioning for the implicit Euler and general implicit RK methods. Two solution strategies are considered for the linear system resulting from general implicit RK integration: the simultaneous solution (the system is solved as a whole) and a successive solution which follows the commonly used implementation of implicit R…
A general method is introduced for constructing two-dimensional (2D) surface meshes embedded in three-dimensional (3D) space time, and 3D hypersurface meshes embedded in four-dimensional (4D) space time. In particular, we begin by dividing the space-time domain into time slabs. Each time slab is equipped with an initial plane (hyperplane), in conjunction with an unstructured simplicial surface (hypersurface) mesh that covers the initial plane. We then obtain the vertices of the terminating plane (hyperplane) of the time slab from the vertices of the initial plane using a space-time trajectory-…
Algebraically stabilized finite element discretizations of scalar steady-state convection-diffusion-reaction equations often provide accurate approximate solutions satisfying the discrete maximum principle (DMP). However, it was observed that a deterioration of the accuracy and convergence rates may occur for some problems if meshes without local symmetries are used. The paper investigates these phenomena both numerically and analytically and the findings are used to design a new algebraic stabilization called Symmetrized Monotone Upwind-type Algebraically Stabilized (SMUAS) method. It is prov…
In mixed finite element approximations of Hodge Laplace problems associated with the de Rham complex, the exterior derivative operators are computed exactly, so the spatial locality is preserved. However, the numerical approximations of the associated coderivatives are nonlocal and it can be regarded as an undesired effect of standard mixed methods. For numerical methods with local coderivatives a perturbation of low order mixed methods in the sense of variational crimes has been developed for simplicial and cubical meshes. In this paper we extend the low order method to all high orders on cub…
Discontinuous Galerkin (dG) methods on meshes consisting of polygonal/polyhedral (henceforth, collectively termed as \emph{polytopic}) elements have received considerable attention in recent years. Due to the physical frame basis functions used typically and the quadrature challenges involved, the matrix-assembly step for these methods is often computationally cumbersome. To address this important practical issue, this work proposes two parallel assembly implementation algorithms on CUDA-enabled graphics cards for the interior penalty dG method on polytopic meshes for various classes of linear…
This work introduces ``generalized meshes", a type of meshes suited for the discretization of partial differential equations in non-regular geometries. Generalized meshes extend regular simplicial meshes by allowing for overlapping elements and more flexible adjacency relations. They can have several distinct ``generalized" vertices (or edges, faces) that occupy the same geometric position. These generalized facets are the natural degrees of freedom for classical conforming spaces of discrete differential forms appearing in finite and boundary element applications. Special attention is devoted…
This work presents, analyzes and tests stabilized space-time finite element methods on fully unstructured simplicial space-time meshes for the numerical solution of space-time tracking parabolic optimal control problems with the standard $L_2$-regularization.
A conforming discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method has been introduced in [21] on simplicial meshes, which has the flexibility of using discontinuous approximation and the simplicity in formulation of the classic continuous finite element method. The goal of this paper is to extend the conforming DG finite element method in \cite{cdg1} so that it can work on general polytopal meshes by designing weak gradient $\nabla_w$ appropriately. Two different conforming DG formulations on polytopal meshes are introduced which handle boundary conditions differently. Error estimates of optimal …
A proof for the lower bound is provided for the smallest eigenvalue of finite element equations with arbitrary conforming simplicial meshes. The bound has a similar form as the one by Graham and McLean [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 44 (2006), pp. 1487--1513] but doesn't require any mesh regularity assumptions, neither global nor local. In particular, it is valid for highly adaptive, anisotropic, or non-regular meshes without any restrictions. In three and more dimensions, the bound depends only on the number of degrees of freedom $N$ and the Hölder mean $M_{1-d/2} (\lvert \tildeω \rvert / \lvert ω_i …

An abstract framework is developed that enables the analysis of algebraically stabilized discretizations in a unified way. This framework is applied to a discretization of this kind for convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The definition of this scheme contains a new limiter that improves a standard one in such a way that local and global discrete maximum principles are satisfied on arbitrary simplicial meshes.
We design the conforming virtual element method for the numerical approximation of the two dimensional elastodynamics problem. We prove stability and convergence of the semi-discrete approximation and derive optimal error estimates under $h$- and $p$-refinement in both the energy and the $L^2$ norms. The performance of the proposed virtual element method is assessed on a set of different computational meshes, including non-convex cells up to order four in the $h$-refinement setting. Exponential convergence is also experimentally observed under p-refinement. Finally, we present a dispersion-dis…
Mesh sensitivity of finite element solution for linear elliptic partial differential equations is analyzed. A bound for the change in the finite element solution is obtained in terms of the mesh deformation and its gradient. The bound shows how the finite element solution changes continuously with the mesh. The result holds in any dimension and for arbitrary unstructured simplicial meshes, general linear elliptic partial differential equations, and general finite element approximations.
We present the lowest-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin schemes with numerical integration (quadrature), denoted as HDG-P0, for the reaction-diffusion equation and the generalized Stokes equations on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. Here by lowest order, we mean that the (hybrid) finite element space for the global HDG facet degrees of freedom (DOFs) is the space of piecewise constants on the mesh skeleton. A discontinuous piecewise linear space is used for the approximation of the local primal unknowns. We give the optimal a priori error analysis of the propo…

We introduce an immersed high-order discontinuous Galerkin method for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on non-boundary-fitted meshes. The flow equations are discretised with a mixed discontinuous Galerkin formulation and are advanced in time with an explicit time marching scheme. The discretisation meshes may contain simplicial (triangular or tetrahedral) elements of different sizes and need not be structured. On the discretisation mesh the fluid domain boundary is represented with an implicit signed distance function. The cut-elements partially covered by the solid domain are …
Standard low-order finite elements, which perform well for problems involving compressible elastic materials, are known to under-perform when nearly incompressible materials are involved, commonly exhibiting the locking phenomenon. Interior penalty (IP) discontinuous Galerkin methods have been shown to circumvent locking when simplicial elements are used. The same IP methods, however, result in locking on meshes of quadrilaterals. The authors have shown in earlier work that under-integration of specified terms in the IP formulation eliminates the locking problem for rectangular elements. Here …
This paper derives and analyzes new diffusion synthetic acceleration (DSA) preconditioners for the SN transport equation when discretized with a high-order (HO) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization. DSA preconditioners address the need to accelerate solving SN transport when the mean free path $\varepsilon$ of particles is small and the condition number of the SN transport equation scales like $O(\varepsilon^{-2})$. By expanding the SN transport operator in $\varepsilon$ and employing a singular matrix perturbation analysis, we derive a DSA matrix that reduces to the symmetric interior p…
We present a space-time least squares finite element method for the heat equation. It is based on residual minimization in L2 norms in space-time of an equivalent first order system. This implies that (i) the resulting bilinear form is symmetric and coercive and hence any conforming discretization is uniformly stable, (ii) stiffness matrices are symmetric, positive definite, and sparse, (iii) we have a local a-posteriori error estimator for free. In particular, our approach features full space-time adaptivity. We also present a-priori error analysis on simplicial space-time meshes which are hi…
