Significant scientific and technological progress in the field of spintronics is based on trilayer magnetic tunnel junction devices which principally rely on the physics of single barrier tunneling. While technologically relevant devices have been prototyped, the physics of single barrier tunneling poses ultimate limitations on the performance of magnetic tunnel junction devices. Here, we propose a fresh route toward high performance magnetic tunnel junctions by making electronic analogs of optical phenomena such as anti-reflections and Fabry-Pèrot resonances. The devices we propose feature anti-reflection enabled superlattice heterostructures sandwiched between the fixed and the free ferromagnets of the magnetic tunnel junction structure. Our predictions are based on the non-equilibrium Green's function spin transport formalism coupled self-consistently with the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation. Owing to the physics of bandpass spin filtering in the bandpass superlattice magnetic tunnel junction device, we demonstrate an ultra-high boost in the tunnel magneto-resistance (TMR$\approx5\times10^4\%$) and nearly 92% suppression of spin transfer torque switching bias in comparison to a traditional trilayer magnetic tunnel junction device. We rationalize improvised spin transfer torque switching via analysis of the Slonczewski spin current transmission spectra. The proof of concepts presented here can lead to next-generation spintronics device design harvesting the rich physics of superlattice heterostructures and exploiting spintronic analogs of optical phenomena.
Magnetic silicene superlattices (MSSLs) are versatile structures with spin-valley polarization and tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) capabilities. However, the oscillating transport properties related to the superlattice periodicity impede stable spin-valley polarization states reachable by reversing the magnetization direction. Here, we show that aperiodicity can be used to improve the spin-valley polarization and TMR by reducing the characteristic conductance oscillations of periodic MSSLs (P-MSSLs). Using the Landauer-Büttiker formalism and the transfer matrix method, we investigate the spi…
We report a combined theoretical and experimental study of electrical transport in weakly-coupled doped superlattices. Our calculations exhibit negative differential conductivity at sufficiently high electric fields for all dopings. In low-doped samples the presence of impurity bands modifies the current-voltage characteristics substantially and we find two different current peaks whose relative height is changing with the electron temperature. These findings can explain the observation of different peaks in the current-voltage characteristics with and without external THz irradiation in low-d…
Recently, moiré superlattices have attracted considerable attentions because they are found to exhibit intriguing electronic phenomena of tunable Mott insulators and unconventional superconductivity. These phenomena are highly related to the physical mechanism of the interlayer coupling. However, up to now, there has not existed any theory that can completely interpret the experimental results of the interlayer conductance of moiré superlattice. In order to solve this problem, the superposition of periods and the corresponding coherence, which are the essential characteristics of moiré superla…
The insertion of the band gap $Δ$ in the rippled graphene superlattice leads to new outcomes, as demonstrated. The essential thing is the appearance of opposite-spin transmissions, which increase with $Δ$ and vanish without it. Furthermore, compared to the $Δ=0$ scenario, the duration of the suppression of the transmission with the same spin is longer, with many peaks. The maximum value of transmissions with the same spin declines and remains around unity. Furthermore, for particular energy values, a shift in the behavior of the transmission channels is found. As a result, we demonstrate that …
We propose a new class of non-uniform superlattice magnetic tunnel junctions (Nu-SLTJs) with the Linear, Gaussian, Lorentzian, and Pöschl-teller width and height based profiles manifesting a sizable enhancement in the TMR($\approx 10^4-10^6\%$) with a significant suppression in the switching bias($\approx$9 folds) owing to the physics of broad-band spin filtering. By exploring the negative differential resistance region in the current-voltage characteristics of the various Nu-SLTJs, we predict the Nu-SLTJs offer the fastest spin transfer torque switching in the order of a few hundred picosecon…
Electron transmission through semiconductor superlattices is studied with transfer matrix method and resonance theory. The formation of electron band-pass transmission is ascribed to the coupling of different modes in those semiconductor superlattices with the symmetric unit cell. Upon Fabry-Pérot resonance condition, Bloch modes and two other resonant modes are identified to be related to the nature of the superlattice and its unit cell, respectively. The bands related to the unit cell and the superlattice overlap spontaneously in the tunneling region due to the shared wells, and the coupling…
We consider a superlattice of parallel metal tunnel junctions with a spatially non-homogeneous probability for electrons to tunnel. In such structures tunneling can be accompanied by electron scattering that conserves energy but not momentum. In the special case of a tunneling probability that varies periodically with period $a$ in the longitudinal direction, i.e., perpendicular to the junctions, electron tunneling is accompanied by "umklapp" scattering, where the longitudinal momentum changes by a multiple of $h/a$. We predict that as a result a sequence of metal-insulator transitions can be …
A graphene superlattice is formed by a one-dimensional periodic potential and is characterized by the emergence of new Dirac points in the electronic structure. The group velocity of graphene's massless Dirac fermions at the new points is drastically reduced, resulting in a measurable effect in the conductance spectroscopy. We show here that tunnel spectroscopy using a superconducting hybrid junction is more sensitive to the formation of Dirac points in the spectrum of graphene superlattices due to the additional contribution of Andreev processes. We examine the transport properties of a graph…
A two miniband model for electron transport in semiconductor superlattices that includes scattering and interminiband tunnelling is proposed. The model is formulated in terms of Wigner functions in a basis spanned by Pauli matrices, includes electron-electron scattering in the Hartree approximation and modified Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook collision tems. For strong applied fields, balance equations for the electric field and the miniband populations are derived using a Chapman-Enskog perturbation technique. These equations are then solved numerically for a dc voltage biased superlattice. Results inc…
Electron transmission through different gated and gapped graphene superlattices (GSLs) is studied. Linear, Gaussian, Lorentzian and Pöschl-Teller superlattice potential profiles have been assessed. A relativistic description of electrons in graphene as well as the transfer matrix method have been used to obtain the transmission properties. We find that is not possible to have perfect or nearly perfect pass bands in gated GSLs. Regardless of the potential profile and the number of barriers there are remanent oscillations in the transmission bands. On the contrary, nearly perfect pass bands are …
Mechanical properties, atomic and energy band structures of bare and hydrogen passivated Si$_{n}$Ge$_{n}$ nanowire superlattices have been investigated by using first-principles pseudopotential plane wave method. Undoped, tetrahedral Si and Ge nanowire segments join pseudomorphically and can form superlattice with atomically sharp interface. We found that Si$_{n}$ nanowires are stiffer than Ge$_{n}$ nanowires. Hydrogen passivation makes these nanowires and Si$_{n}$Ge$_{n}$ nanowire superlattice even more stiff. Upon heterostructure formation, superlattice electronic states form subbands in mom…
Interactions between stacked two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystals can radically change their properties, leading to essentially new materials in terms of the electronic structure. Here we show that monolayers placed on an atomically flat substrate can be forced to undergo a buckling transition, which results in periodically strained superlattices. By using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy and support from numerical simulations, we show that such lateral superlattices in graphene lead to a periodically modulated pseudo-magnetic field, which in turn creates a post-graphene material…
We review recent work on superlattices in monolayer and bilayer graphene. We highlight the role of the quasiparticle chirality in generating new Dirac fermion modes with tunable anisotropic velocities in one dimensional (1D) superlattices in both monolayer and bilayer graphene. We discuss the structure of the Landau levels and magnetotransport in such superlattices over a wide range of perpendicular (orbital) magnetic fields. In monolayer graphene, we show that an orbital magnetic field can reverse the anisotropy of the transport imposed by the superlattice potential, suggesting possible switc…
In pursuit of designing superior type-II superlattice barrier infrared detectors, this study encompasses an exhaustive analysis of utilizing M-structured superlattices for both the absorber and barrier layers through proper band engineering and discusses its potential benefits over other candidates. The electronic band properties of ideally infinite M-structures are calculated using the eight band $k.p$ method which takes into account the effects of both strain and microscopic interface asymmetry to primarily estimate the bandgap and density-of-states effective mass and their variation with re…

Optical orientation in the strained semiconductor superlattices is investigated theoretically. The dependence of the features in spin-polarization spectra on the structure parameters is clarified. The value of polarization in the first polarization maximum in the SL structures is shown to grow with the splitting between the hh- and lh- states of the valence band, the joint strain and confinement effects on the hh1- lh1 splitting being strongly influenced by the tunneling in the barriers. In strained structures with high barriers for the holes initial polarization can exceed 95 %. Calculated po…
The energy bands and the global density of states are computed for superconductor / normal-metal superlattices in the clean limit. Dispersion relations are derived for the general case of insulating interfaces, including the mismatch of Fermi velocities and effective band masses. We focus on the influence of finite interface transparency and compare our results with those for transparent superlattices and trilayers. Analogously to the rapid variation on the atomic scale of the energy dispersion with layer thicknesses in transparent superlattices, we find strong oscillations of the almost flat …
We investigate spin-dependent transmission in a curved graphene superlattice of $N$ cells where each one is made up of four regions. The first is concave, and the third is convex, two arcs of circles separated by a distance $d$ from flat graphene sheets. The tunneling analysis allows us to determine all transmission and reflection channels associated with our system. As a result, we show that the number of cells acts by decreasing the transmissions with the same spin. We predict a solid spin-filtering effect when $d$ and $N$ are sufficiently large. Finally, it is determined that the degree and…

We have studied Bloch electrons in a perfect unidirectional superlattice subject to crossed electric and magnetic fields, where the magnetic field is oriented ``in-plane'', i.e. in parallel to the sample plane. Two orientation of the electric field are considered. It is shown that the magnetic field suppresses the intersubband tunneling of the Zener type, but does not change the frequency of Bloch oscillations, if the electric field is oriented perpendicularly to both the sample plane and the magnetic field. The electric field applied in-plane (but perpendicularly to the magnetic field) yields…

We explore the unconventional propagation of light in a three-dimensional (3D) superlattice of coupled resonant cavities in a 3D photonic band gap crystal. Such a 3D cavity superlattice is the photonic analogue of the Anderson model for spins and electrons in the limit of zero disorder. Using the plane-wave expansion method, we calculate the dispersion relations of the 3D cavity superlattice with the cubic inverse woodpile structure that reveal five coupled-cavity bands, typical of quadrupole-like resonances. For three out of five bands, we observe that the dispersion bandwidth is significantl…
Moiré superlattices in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures can host novel correlated quantum phenomena due to the interplay of narrow moiré flat bands and strong, long-range Coulomb interactions1-5. However, microscopic knowledge of the atomically-reconstructed moiré superlattice and resulting flat bands is still lacking, which is critical for fundamental understanding and control of the correlated moiré phenomena. Here we quantitatively study the moiré flat bands in three-dimensional (3D) reconstructed WSe2/WS2 moiré superlattices by comparing scanning tunneling spectroscop…
We investigate the physics of photonic band structures of the moiré patterns that emerged when overlapping two uni-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal slabs with mismatched periods. The band structure of our system is a result of the interplay between intra-layer and inter-layer coupling mechanisms, which can be fine-tuned via the distance separating the two layers. We derive an effective Hamiltonian that captures the essential physics of the system and reproduces all numerical simulations of electromagnetic solutions with high accuracy. Most interestingly, \textit{magic distances} corresponding…
