Fundamental insight into lattice dynamics and phonon transport is critical to the efficient manipulation of heat flow, which is one of the appealing thermophysical problems with enormous practical implications. Phosphorene, a novel elemental two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor with high carrier mobility and intrinsically large direct band gap, possesses fascinating chemical and physical properties distinctively different from other 2D materials. The rapidly growing applications of phosphorene in nano-/opto-electronics and thermoelectrics call for fundamental understanding of the thermal transport properties. In this study, based on the analysis of electronic structure and lattice dynamics, we demonstrate the formation of resonant bonding in phosphorene. Fundamental insight into the thermal transport in phosphorene is provided by discussing the role of resonant bonding in driving long-range interactions and strong phonon anharmonicity. We reveal that the strong phonon anharmonicity is associated with the soft transverse optical (TO) phonon modes and arises from the long-range interactions driven by the orbital governed resonant bonding. Our study highlights the physical origin of the phonon anharmonicity in phosphorene, and also provides new insights into phonon transport from the view of orbital states, which would be of great significance to the design and development of high-performance phosphorene based nano-devices.
We propose previously unknown allotropes of phosphorus carbide (PC) in the stable shape of an atomically thin layer. Different stable geometries, which result from the competition between sp2 bonding found in graphitic C and sp3 bonding found in black P, may be mapped onto 2D tiling patterns that simplify categorizing of the structures. Depending on the category, we identify 2D-PC structures that can be metallic, semi-metallic with an anisotropic Dirac cone, or direct-gap semiconductors with their gap tunable by in-layer strain.
In this work, phosphorous-doped single-walled carbon nanotubes have been synthesized by the thermal decomposition of trimethylphosphine using a high-vacuum chemical vapor deposition method. Furthermore, a modified density-gradient-ultracentrifugation process has been applied to carefully purify our doped material. The combined use of Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy allowed us to provide the first insight into the bonding environment of P incorporated into the carbon lattice, avoiding competing signals arising from synthesis byproducts. This study represents the first step toward the…
Two pressure-induced phase transitions have been theoretically studied in the layered iron phosphorus triselenide (FePSe3). Topological analysis of chemical bonding in FePSe3 has been performed based on the results of first-principles calculations within the periodic linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) method with hybrid Hartree-Fock-DFT B3LYP functional. The first transition at about 6 GPa is accompanied by the symmetry change from R-3 to C2/m, whereas the semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) occurs at about 13 GPa leading to the symmetry change from C2/m to P-31m. We found that t…
Twisted stacked few layer black phosphorus heterostructures were successfully fabricated in this work. Abnormal blue shifts in their Ag1 and Ag2 Raman peaks and unique optical reflections were observed in these samples. The phonon behavior difference can be explained by our density functional theory calculations, which suggest that interlayer coupling has a significant effect in twisted bilayer black phosphorus. According to the calculations, the interlayer interactions are not simply van der Waals interactions. Additional interactions, such as weak valence bonding between the top and bottom f…
The Poisson's ratio of a material characterizes its response to uniaxial strain. Materials normally possess a positive Poisson's ratio - they contract laterally when stretched, and expand laterally when compressed. A negative Poisson's ratio is theoretically permissible but has not, with few exceptions of man-made bulk structures, been experimentally observed in any natural materials. Here, we show that the negative Poisson's ratio exists in the low-dimensional natural material black phosphorus, and that our experimental observations are consistent with first principles simulations. Through ap…
The structural and elastic properties of orthorhombic black phosphorus have been investigated using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. The structural parameters have been calculated using the local density approximation (LDA), the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), and with several dispersion corrections to include van der Waals interactions. It is found that the dispersion corrections improve the lattice parameters over LDA and GGA in comparison with experimental results. The calculations reproduce well the experimental trends under pressure and show that…
Controlled syntheses in nanoscale structures should be expected and phosphorous nanotubes with predefined chiralities are important in electronic devices with tunable bandgap. Here, incorporating molecular dynamics simulations with theoretical analyses, we show that a zigzag phosphorene nanoribbon can self-assemble and form a corresponding chiral phosphorous nanotube surrounding a template armchair phosphorous nanotube. The van der Waals potential between the nanoribbon and the nanotube is transformed to the intrinsic deformed and chemical bonding energies of the synthesized tube together with…
Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism are performed to investigate the chemical functionalization of a graphene-like monolayer of silicon - silicene - with B, N, Al or P atoms. The structural, electronic, magnetic and vibrational properties are reported. The most preferable adsorption sites are found to be valley, bridge, valley and hill site for B, N, Al and P adatoms, respectively. All the relaxed systems with adsorbed/substituted atoms exhibit metallic behaviour with strongly bonded B, N, Al, and P atoms accompanied by an appreciable electron transfer from si…
In the recent years, three-dimensional (3D) high-temperature superconductors at ultrahigh pressure have been reported, typical examples are the polyhydrides H$_{3}$S, LaH$_{10}$, and YH$_{9}$, etc. To find high-temperature superconductors in two-dimensional (2D) at atmosphere pressure is another research hotspot. Here, we investigated the possible superconductivity in a hydrogenated monolayer phosphorus carbide based on first-principles calculations. The results reveal that monolayer PC$_{3}$ transforms from a semiconductor to a metal after hydrogenation. Interestingly, the C-$π$-bonding band …
Intermetallic semiconductors with the cubic Half-Heusler structure (XYZ) have excellent thermoelectric properties. This has been attributed to the high degeneracy of the carrier pockets in the band structure, but large differences are found between different material compositions. Half-Heuslers are often interpreted within Zintl chemistry, making a clear distinction between an electropositive cation ($X^{n+}$) and an extended polyanion ($YZ^{n-}$). Based on quantitative real space chemical bonding analysis, we unravel large degrees of covalent bonding between the formal cation and anion, makin…

Two-dimensional materials tend to become crumpled according to the Mermin-Wagner theorem, and the resulting ripple deformation may significantly influence electronic properties as observed in graphene and MoS2. Here we unveil by first-principles calculations a new, highly anisotropic ripple pattern in phosphorene, a monolayer black phosphorus, where compression induced ripple deformation occurs only along the zigzag direction in the strain range up to 10%, but not the armchair direction. This direction-selective ripple deformation mode in phosphorene stems from its puckered structure with coup…

Few-layer Tellurium, an elementary semiconductor, succeeds most of striking physical properties that black phosphorus (BP) offers and could be feasibly synthesized by simple solution-based methods. It is comprised of non-covalently bound parallel Te chains, among which covalent-like feature appears. This feature is, we believe, another demonstration of the previously found covalent-like quasi-bonding (CLQB) where wavefunction hybridization does occur. The strength of this inter-chain CLQB is comparable with that of intra-chain covalent bonding, leading to closed stability of several Te allotro…
Highly nonlinear optical phenomena can provide access to properties of electronic systems which are otherwise difficult to access through conventional linear optical spectroscopies. In particular, high harmonic generation (HHG) in crystalline solids is strikingly different from that in atomic gases, and it enables us to access electronic properties such as the band structure, Berry curvature, and valence electron density. Here, we show that polarization-resolved HHG measurements can be used to probe the transition dipole moment (TDM) texture in momentum space in two dimensional semiconductors.…
