We present first direct evidence of modulation in the $K$-band of Blazhko-type RR Lyrae stars that are identified by their secular modulations in the I-band data of OGLE-IV. A method has been developed to decompose the $K$-band light variation into two parts originating from the temperature and the radius changes using synthetic data of atmosphere-model grids. The amplitudes of the temperature and the radius variations derived from the method for non-Blazhko RRab stars are in very good agreement with the results of the Baade-Wesselink analysis of RRab stars in the M3 globular cluster confirming the applicability and correctness of the method. It has been found that the Blazhko modulation is primarily driven by the change in the temperature variation. The radius variation plays a marginal part, moreover it has an opposite sign as if the Blazhko effect was caused by the radii variations. This result reinforces the previous finding based on the Baade-Wesselink analysis of M3 (NGC 5272) RR Lyrae, that significant modulation of the radius variations can only be detected in radial-velocity measurements, which relies on spectral lines that form in the uppermost atmospheric layers. Our result gives the first insight into the energetics and dynamics of the Blazhko phenomenon, hence it puts strong constraints on its possible physical explanations.
We briefly discuss three cases of RR~Lyrae variable stars with Blazhko modulation from the OGLE Galactic bulge collection. In one of the discussed stars modulation with two periods is detected, in other star, we detect three Blazhko modulations.
The results of an observation campaign of V0784 Ophiuchi over a time span of two years have revealed a multi-periodic Blazhko effect. A Blazhko effect for V0784 Ophiuchi has not been reported previously. From the observed light curves, 60 pulsation maxima have been measured. The Fourier analyses of the (O-C) values and of magnitudes at maximum light have revealed a main Blazhko period of 24.51 days but also two other secondary Blazhko modulations with periods of 34.29 and 31.07 days. A complete light curve Fourier analysis with PERIOD04 has shown triplet structures based on main and secondary …
The correct amplitude and phase modulation formalism of the Blazhko modulation is given. The harmonic order dependent amplitude and phase modulation form is equivalent with the Fourier decomposition of multiplets. The amplitude and phase modulation formalism used in electronic transmission technique as introduced by Benkő, Szabó and Paparó (2011, MNRAS 417, 974) for Blazhko stars oversimplifies the amplitude and phase modulation functions thus it does not describe the light variation in full detail. The results of the different formalisms are compared and documented by fitting the light curve …
A new, extended time-series photometry of M3 RR Lyrae stars has revealed that four of the ten double-mode stars show large-amplitude Blazhko modulation of both radial modes. The first, detailed analysis of the peculiar behavior of the unique, Blazhko RRd stars is given. While the P1/P0 period ratio is normal, and the overtone mode is dominant in the other RRd stars of the cluster, the period ratio is anomalous and the fundamental mode has a larger (or similar) mean amplitude than the overtone has in Blazhko RRd stars. The modulations of the fundamental and overtone modes are synchronized only …
We present the analysis of the multicolour CCD observations in the 2010 season of the Blazhko RRc star TV Boo. TV Boo shows a complex Blazhko modulation dominated by two independent modulations with P_{fm1}=9.74 d and P_{fm2}=21.43 d long periods. Both modulation components appear in the frequency spectra as multiplet structures around the harmonics of the pulsation. The positive value of the asymmetry parameter (Q=+0.51) of the primary modulation suggests that it is similar in its character to the Blazhko effect of most of the modulated RRab stars. Interestingly, the secondary, lower-amplitud…
Blazhko stars from the extended $BVI_{\mathrm C}$ time series of RRab stars in the globular cluster, M3, are analysed. This is the largest sample of Blazhko stars with full details of their Blazhko properties in a homogeneous stellar system. Blazhko periods and light-curve solutions are determined/estimated for 83 fundamental-mode variables. The lack of phase modulation in Oosterhoff-type~II stars and the diminishing relative strength of the modulation in long-period Oosterhoff-type~I stars are the regular tendencies found between the pulsation and modulation properties of Blazko stars. Simila…
A systematic survey to establish the true incidence rate of the Blazhko modulation among short-period, fundamental-mode, Galactic field RR Lyrae stars has been accomplished. The Konkoly Blazhko Survey (KBS) was initiated in 2004. Since then more than 750 nights of observation have been devoted to this project. A sample of 30 RRab stars was extensively observed, and light-curve modulation was detected in 14 cases. The 47% occurrence rate of the modulation is much larger than any previous estimate. The significant increase of the detected incidence rate is mostly due to the discovery of small-am…
We present the analysis of the CoRoT star 105288363, a new Blazhko RR Lyrae star of type RRab (f0 = 1.7623 c/d), observed with the CoRoT space craft during the second long run in direction of the galactic center (LRc02, time base 145 d). The CoRoT data are characterized by an excellent time sampling and a low noise amplitude of 0.07 mmag in the 2-12 c/d range and allow us to study not only the fine details of the variability of the star but also long-term changes in the pulsation behaviour and the stability of the Blazhko cycle. We use, among other methods, standard Fourier analysis techniques…
We found a possible relationship between the modulation period and the amplitude of the Blazhko RR Lyrae stars: long modulation period generally implies high modulation amplitude while the short modulation period results in small amplitude. Although this effect is much more a tendency than a strict rule, it can be detected easily in the space-born time series data produced by Kepler and CoRoT. Good quality ground-based data show this relation, too. This phenomenon could give us constraints for the physics of the Blazhko effect.
Thorough analysis of the multicolour CCD observations of the RRab-type variable, CZ Lacertae is presented. The observations were carried out in two consecutive observing seasons in 2004 and 2005 within the framework of the Konkoly Blazhko Survey of bright, northern, short-period RRab variables. The O-C variation of CZ Lac indicated that a significant period decrease took place just around the time of the CCD observations. Our data gave a unique opportunity to study the related changes in the pulsation and modulation properties of a Blazhko star in detail. Two different period components ($\app…
We present the results of multi-longitude observations of KV Cancri, an RR Lyrae star showing an irregular Blazhko effect. With a pulsation period of 0.50208 day, the times of light curve maxima are delayed by 6 minutes per day. This daily delay regularly leads to long periods of time without maximum light curve observations for a given site. To cope with this observing time window problem, we have organized a multi-longitude observation campaign including a telescope of the AAVSONet. From the observed light curves, 92 pulsation maxima have been measured covering about six Blazhko periods. The…
The number of stars observed by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) project in the Galactic bulge offers an invaluable chance to study RR Lyrae stars in a statistical manner. We used data of 3141 fundamental-mode RR Lyrae stars showing the Blazhko effect observed in OGLE-IV to investigate a possible connection between modulation amplitudes and periods, light curve and pulsation characteristics. We found that there is no simple monotonic correlation between any combination of two parameters concerning the Blazhko and pulsation amplitudes, periods and the shape of the light curve…
Period study of 321 fundamental mode galactic field RR Lyrae type stars (RRab), which had appropriate data in ASAS and SuperWASP surveys, brighter than 12.5 mag in maximum light was performed. We found 100 stars to be definitely modulated. In 25 cases, previously unknown modulation was revealed and 8 new candidates for Blazhko stars were identified. In 18 previously found Blazhko stars, no modulation was detectable. Multiple modulation was revealed for eight stars that were previously proposed to show simple modulation. In total, there were twelve stars with some peculiarity in their modulatio…
We present the hydrodynamic BL Herculis-type models which display a long-term modulation of pulsation amplitudes and phases. The modulation is either strictly periodic or it is quasi-periodic, with the modulation period and modulation pattern varying from one cycle to the other. Such behaviour has not been observed in any BL Her variable so far, however, it is a common property of their lower luminosity siblings - RR Lyrae variables showing the Blazhko effect. These models provide a support for the recent mechanism proposed by Buchler & Kollath to explain this still mysterious phenomenon. In t…
The ground-based Konkoly Blazhko Survey I and II aim to collect accurate, extended, multicolour light curves of galactic field RRab stars in order to determine the incidence rate of the modulation in the sample, to study the modulation in details, to study long-term changes in the modulation properties and to find changes in the mean global physical parameters of the stars with Blazhko phase. Here the diversity of light curve variations of Blazhko stars is demonstrated through a sub-sample of the modulated RRab stars found by the first part of this survey.
V473 Lyrae is a peculiar Galactic Cepheid, showing strong amplitude modulation that resembles the Blazhko-effect observed in RR Lyrae stars. We collected data spanning several modulation cycles and started a detailed analysis. The first results indicate that the star shows both amplitude and phase modulations with an average period of 1204 days, but both the cycle length and the strength of the modulation are subjected to considerable variations. A possible quintuplet component in the Fourier spectrum and additional period changes were also detected.
The light curves of 50 RRab (RR0) stars in M5 collected in Paper I are investigated to detect Blazhko modulation. 18 Blazhko stars are identified, and modulation is suspected in two additional cases. The mean pulsation period of Blazhko stars is 0.04 d shorter than the mean period of the entire RRab sample in M5. Among the RRab stars with period shorter than 0.55 d the incidence rate of the modulation is as high as 60 per cent. The mean $B-V$ colours of Blazhko stars overlap with the colours of first overtone RRc (RR1) pulsators. The mean $V$ magnitudes of Blazhko stars are on the average 0.05…
In an extended photometric campaign of RR Lyrae variables of the globular cluster M3, an aberrant light-curve, non-Blazhko RRab star, V123, was detected. Based on its brightness, colors and radial velocity curve, V123 is a bona fide member of M3. The light curve of V123 exhibits neither a bump preceding light minimum, nor a hump on the rising branch, and has a longer than normal rise time, with a convex shape. Similar shape characterizes the mean light curves of some large-modulation-amplitude Blazhko stars, but none of the regular RRab variables with similar pulsation periods. This peculiar o…
This study investigates periodic modulation of the light curve of the RRc star TV Boo and its physical parameters based on photometric data. This phenomenon, known as Blazhko effect, is quite rare among RRc stars. Frequency analysis based on the data gathered at Masaryk University Observatory (MUO) and also using SuperWASP data revealed symmetrically structured peaks around the main pulsation frequency and its harmonics, which indicate two modulation components of the Blazhko period. The main modulation periodicity was found to be 9.7374(54) d. This is one of the shortest known Blazhko periods…
Rapid and strong changes in the Blazhko modulation of RR Lyrae stars, as they have recently been detected in high precision satellite data, have become a crucial topic in finding an explanation of the long-standing mystery of the Blazhko effect. We present here an analysis of the most extreme case detected so far, the RRab star V445 Lyr (KIC 6186029) which was observed with the Kepler space mission. V445 Lyr shows very strong cycle-to-cycle changes in its Blazhko modulation, which are caused both by a secondary long-term modulation period as well as irregular variations. In addition to the com…
We present the analysis of the Blazhko effect - quasi-periodic modulation of pulsation amplitude and/or phase - in the Galactic bulge first overtone RR Lyrae stars (RRc). We used the data gathered during the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). Out of 10 826 analyzed RRc stars, Blazhko effect was detected in 607 stars which constitute 5.6 percent of the sample. It is the largest and most homogeneous sample of modulated RRc stars analyzed so far. Modulation periods cover a wide range, from slightly above 2 d to nearly 3000 d. Multiperiodic modulation was detected…
The simultaneous photometric and spectroscopic observations of the RR Lyrae variables in the globular cluster, M3, published in Jurcsik et al. (2017, Paper I) made it possible to perform Baade-Wesselink (BW) analysis of a large sample of Blazhko stars for the first time. The BW distances of Blazhko stars turned out to be unreliable, as significantly different distances were obtained for the stars of the Blazhko sample and also for the same star in different modulation phases. Even the results of small modulation-amplitude Blazhko stars may be doubtful. This result warns that the application of…
The Blazhko-phenomenon, the modulation of the pulsation of RR Lyrae stars remains one of the most stubborn unsolved problems of stellar pulsation. The recent idea of Stothers proposes that periodic variations in the properties of the convective envelope may be behind the amplitude and phase modulation. In this work we approximated the mechanism by introducing variations in the convective parameters of the Florida-Budapest hydrodynamic code and also by means of amplitude equations. We found that the process is only effective for long modulation periods, typically for more than hundred days, in …
The results presented are a continuation of observing campaigns conducted by a small group of amateur astronomers interested in the Blazhko effect of RR Lyrae stars. The goal of these observations is to confirm the RR Lyrae Blazhko effect and to detect any additional Blazhko modulation which cannot be identified from all sky survey data-mining. The Blazhko effect of the two observed stars is confirmed, but no additional Blazhko modulations have been detected. The observation of the RR Lyrae star AL Pic during 169 nights was conducted from San Pedro de Atacama (Chile). From the observed light c…
We study the 1.28 million short cadence {\it Kepler} data points (Q5-Q14) for RR Lyrae covering 24 cycles of the Blazhko variation, and more than one half of the 4-year modulation of the Blazhko variation. This very rich data set clearly shows variability of the 0.5667 day pulsation period (from 0.5655 to 0.5685 day) with each Blazhko cycle, as well as a variation of the Blazhko period itself (from 39.2 days at amplitude maximum to 38.4 days at amplitude minimum) during the 4 year modulation, as well as a rapid increase in Blazhko period as the new cycle commences.
DM Cyg, a fundamental mode RRab star was observed in the 2007 and 2008 seasons in the frame of the Konkoly Blazhko Survey. Very small amplitude light curve modulation was detected with 10.57 d modulation period. The maximum brightness and phase variations do not exceed 0.07 mag and 7 min, respectively. In spite of the very small amplitude of the modulation, beside the frequency triplets characterizing the Fourier spectrum of the light curve two quintuplet components were also identified. The accuracy and the good phase coverage of our observations made it possible to analyse the light curves a…
We present a detailed nonlinear dynamical investigation of the Blazhko modulation of the Kepler RR Lyrae star V783 Cyg (KIC 5559631). We used different techniques to produce modulation curves, including the determination of amplitude maxima, the O-C diagram and the analytical function method. We were able to fit the modulation curves with chaotic signals with the global flow reconstruction method. However, when we investigated the effects of instrumental and data processing artefacts, we found that the chaotic nature of the modulation can not be proved because of the technical problems of data…
A thorough analysis of multicolour CCD observations of two modulated RRab-type variables, XY And and UZ Vir is presented. These Blazhko stars show relatively simple light-curve modulation with the usual multiplet structures in their Fourier spectra. One additional, independent frequency with linear-combination terms of the pulsation frequency is also detected in the residual spectrum of each of the two stars. The amplitude and phase relations of the triplet components are studied in detail. Most of the epoch-independent phase differences show a slight, systematic colour dependence, however, th…
Photometric observations in 2010-2014 of the RR Lyrae star AR Serpentis are presented and analyzed. Two Blazhko modulations of comparable amplitude are detected, with the periods 89 and 108 days, and with evidence for irregularities.
The Blazhko effect is the conspicuous amplitude and phase modulation of the pulsation of RR Lyrae stars that was discovered in the early 20th century. The field of study of this mysterious modulation has recently been invigorated thanks to the space photometric missions providing long, uninterrupted, ultra-precise time series data. In this paper I give a brief overview of the new observational findings related to the Blazhko effect, like extreme modulations, irregular modulation cycles and additional periodicities. I argue that these findings together with dedicated ground-based efforts now pr…
The analysis of recent, extended multicolour CCD and archive photoelectric, photographic and visual observations has revealed several important properties of RZ Lyr, an RRab-type variable exhibiting large-amplitude Blazhko modulation. On the time-base of \sim110 yr, a strict anticorrelation between the pulsation and modulation period changes is established. The light curve of RZ Lyr shows a remarkable bump on the descending branch in the small-amplitude phase of the modulation, similarly to the light curves of bump Cepheids. We speculate that the stellar structure temporally suits a 4:1 resona…
In spite of the accumulating high quality data on RR Lyrae stars, the underlying cause of the (quasi)periodic light curve modulation (the so-called Blazhko effect) of these objects remains as mysterious as it was more than hundred years ago when the first RR Lyrae observations were made. In this review we briefly summarize the current observational status of the Blazhko stars, discuss the failure of all currently available ideas attempting to explain the Blazhko effect and finally, we contemplate on various avenues, including massive 2-3D modeling to make progress. Somewhat unconventionally to…
With increasingly accurate data on RR Lyrae stars we find that the Blazhko effect may be a rule rather than an exception. However, we still do not know what is the cause of this mysterious amplitude and phase modulation. In my talk, I intended to give a glimpse of the properties of Blazhko stars, presenting recent findings concerning what makes Blazhko stars different from their non-modulated counterparts. Recent observations of Blazhko stars obtained from space give some important clues that deserve further exploration.
We investigated 1234 fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars observed by the All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) to identify the Blazhko (BL) effect. A sample of 1547 BL stars from the literature was collected to compare the modulation-period distribution with stars newly identified in our sample. A classical frequency spectra analysis was performed using Period04 software. Data points from each star from the ASAS database were analysed individually to avoid confusion with artificial peaks and aliases. Statistical methods were used in the investigation of the modulation-period distribution. Altogether we …
The amplitude and phase modulation observed in a significant fraction of the RR Lyrae variables - the Blazhko effect - represents a long-standing enigma in stellar pulsation theory. No satisfactory explanation for the Blazhko effect has been proposed so far. In this paper we focus on the Stothers (2006) idea, in which modulation is caused by changes in the structure of the outer convective zone, caused by a quasi-periodically changing magnetic field. However, up to this date no quantitative estimates were made to investigate whether such a mechanism can be operational and whether it is capable…
The first detection of the period doubling phenomenon is reported in the Kepler RR Lyrae stars RR Lyr, V808 Cyg and V355 Lyr. Interestingly, all these pulsating stars show Blazhko modulation. The period doubling manifests itself as alternating maxima and minima of the pulsational cycles in the light curve, as well as through the appearance of half-integer frequencies located halfway between the main pulsation period and its harmonics in the frequency spectrum. The effect was found to be stronger during certain phases of the modulation cycle. We were able to reproduce the period doubling bifurc…
In order to benefit from the 4-year unprecedented precision of the Kepler data, we extracted light curves from the pixel photometric data of the Kepler space telescope for 15 Blazhko RR Lyrae stars. For collecting all the flux from a given target as accurately as possible, we defined tailor-made apertures for each star and quarter. In some cases the aperture finding process yielded sub-optimal result, because some flux have been lost even if the aperture contains all available pixels around the star. This fact stresses the importance of those methods that rely on the whole light curve instead …
We present the analysis of Blazhko-type modulation in double-mode RR Lyrae (RRd) stars found in the OGLE photometry of the Galactic bulge. Modulation is detected in 15 stars. Most of them have non-typical period ratio of the radial modes. In the Petersen diagram, at a given period of the fundamental mode, they are located significantly below or above the sequence formed by the majority of RRd stars. Multi-periodic modulation is very frequent; two or three modulation periods are detected in 8 stars. Modulation periods vary from ~20 to more than 300 days. Radial mode amplitudes can be modulated …
We present the first paper of a series focused on the Blazhko effect in RR Lyrae type stars pulsating in the fundamental mode, that are located in the Galactic bulge. A~comprehensive overview about the incidence rate and light-curve characteristics of the Blazhko stars is given. We analysed 8\,282 stars having the best quality data in the OGLE-IV survey, and found that at least $40.3$\,\% of stars show modulation of their light curves. The number of Blazhko stars we identified is 3\,341, which is the largest sample ever studied implying the most relevant statistical results currently available…
We report the discovery of amplitude and phase modulations typical of the Blazhko effect in 22 RRc and 9 RRab type RR Lyrae stars in NGC 5024 (M53). This brings the confirmed Blazhko variables in this cluster to 23 RRc and 11 RRab, that represent 66% and 37% of the total population of RRc and RRab stars in the cluster respectively, making NGC 5024 the globular cluster with the largest presently known population of Blazhko RRc stars. We place a lower limit on the overall incidence rate of the Blazhko effect among the RR Lyrae population in this cluster of 52%. New data have allowed us to refine…
We developed an Inverse Photometric method (IPM) to determine global physical parameters of RR Lyrae stars exclusively from multicolor light curves (Sódor, Jurcsik & Szeidl, 2009, MNRAS, 394, 261). We showed that for good quality photometric observations of unmodulated RRab stars, the IPM gives similarly good results as direct Baade-Wesselink analyses do, but without the need for spectroscopic measurements. In the course of the development, we payed special attention to the applicability of the IPM for modulated RR Lyrae stars. Since there is no simultaneous spectroscopic radial velocity and p…
In this paper it is shown that the Blazhko effect may result from a near-resonant type of multi-mode pulsation, where two (or sometimes more) periodic oscillations with slightly different frequencies gradually slip in phase, producing a beat frequency type of modulation. Typically one of these oscillations is strongly non-sinusoidal. Two oscillations are sufficient for the standard Blazhko effect; additional oscillations are needed to explain multi-frequency modulation. Previous work on this hypothesis by Arthur N. Cox and others is extended in this paper by developing a simple (non-hydro) mod…
The CoRoT (Convection, Rotation and planetary Transits) space mission provides a valuable opportunity to monitor stars with uninterrupted time sampling for up to 150 days at a time. The study of RR Lyrae stars, performed in the framework of the Additional Programmes belonging to the exoplanetary field, will particularly benefit from such dense, long-duration monitoring. The Blazhko effect in RR Lyrae stars is a long-standing, unsolved problem of stellar astrophysics. We used the CoRoT data of the new RR Lyrae variable CoRoT 101128793 (f0=2.119 c/d, P=0.4719296 d) to provide us with more detail…
We report the results of our study of lightcurve modulation in a sample of 493 RR1 variables from the OGLE-III survey of galactic bulge fields. Each object in this list has 1500 or more I-band observations. We compare our findings with earlier studies regarding lightcurve modulation in LMC and galactic field RR1 stars. We also report the discovery of the modulated-Blazhko RR1 star OGLE-BLG-RRLYR-03825 which has a Blazhko period of 16.469 d which itself is modulated with a period of 339.2 d.
The Blazhko effect is a long term, generally irregular modulation of the light curves that occurs in a sizeable number of RR Lyrae stars. The physical origin of the effect has been a puzzle ever since its discovery over a hundred years ago. We build here upon the recent observational and theoretical work of Szabo et al. on RRab stars who found with hydrodynamical simulations that the fundamental pulsation mode can get destabilized by a 9:2 resonant interaction with the 9th overtone. Alternating pulsation cycles arise, although these remain periodic, i.e. not modulated as in the observations. H…
The light curves of many Blazhko stars exhibit intervals in which successive pulsation maxima alternate between two levels in a way that is characteristic of period-doubling. In addition, hydrocode models of these stars have clearly demonstrated period-doubling bifurcations. As a result, it is now generally accepted that these stars do indeed exhibit period-doubling. Here we present strong evidence that this assumption is incorrect. The alternating maxima likely result from the presence of one or more near-resonant modes which appear in the stellar spectra and are slightly but significantly of…
The origin of the conspicuous amplitude and phase modulation of the RR Lyrae pulsation - known as the Blazhko effect - is still a mystery after more than 100 years of its discovery. With the help of the Kepler space telescope we have revealed a new and unexpected phenomenon: period doubling in RR Lyr - the eponym and prototype of its class - as well as in other Kepler Blazhko RR Lyrae stars. We have found that period doubling is directly connected to the Blazhko modulation. Furthermore, with hydrodynamic model calculations we have succeeded in reproducing the period doubling and proved that th…
We present our analysis of the long cadence Kepler data for the well-studied Blazhko star RR Lyr, gathered during the first two quarters of the satellite's observations and covering a total of 127d. Besides being of great importance for our understanding of RR Lyrae stars in general, these RR Lyr data can be regarded as a case study for observations of bright stars with Kepler. Kepler can perform high-precision photometry on targets like RR Lyr, as the saturated flux is conserved to a very high degree. The Kepler data on RR Lyr are revolutionary in several respects. Even with long-cadence samp…
We present our analysis of Kepler observations of 29 RR Lyrae stars, based on 138-d of observation. We report precise pulsation periods for all stars. Nine of these stars had incorrect or unknown periods in the literature. Fourteen of the stars exhibit both amplitude and phase Blazhko modulations, with Blazhko periods ranging from 27.7 to more than 200 days. For V445 Lyr, a longer secondary variation is also observed in addition to its 53.2-d Blazhko period. The unprecedented precision of the Kepler photometry has led to the discovery of the the smallest modulations detected so far. Moreover, …
We set out to compile a catalogue of RRab pulsating variables in the SuperWASP archive and identify candidate Blazhko effect objects within this catalogue. We analysed their light curves and power spectra for correlations in their common characteristics to further our understanding of the phenomenon. Pulsation periods were found for each SWASP RRab object using PDM techniques. Low frequency periodic signals detected in the CLEAN power spectra of RRab stars were matched with modulation sidebands and combined with pairs of sidebands to produce a list of candidate Blazhko periods. A novel techniq…
The Blazhko effect in V1820 Orionis and its period were reported for the first time by Wils et al. (2006) from a data analysis of the Northern Sky Variability Survey. The results of additional V1820 Orionis observations over a time span of 4 years are presented herein. From the observed light curves, 73 pulsation maxima have been measured. The times of light maxima have been compared to ephemerides to obtain the (O-C) values. The Blazhko period (27.917 +/- 0.002 d) has been derived from light curve Fourier analysis and from ANOVA analyses of the (O-C) values and of magnitudes at maximum light …
Amplitude and period variations have been detected in almost all types of pulsating stars. Many of these modulations are nearly periodic. In RR Lyrae stars the phenomenon in known as the Blazhko Effect. Because of the observed similarities, we propose to extend the definition to other groups. We illustrate the Blazhko Effect with examples from Cepheids, RR Lyrae stars, White Dwarfs, sdB stars and delta Scuti variables. For delta Scuti stars the present results indicate the presence of at least two effects: beating of independent modes with close frequencies and stellar cycles. For period and a…
The Blazhko effect in CX Lyr has been reported for the first time by Le Borgne et al. (2007). The authors have pointed out that the Blazhko period was not evaluated accurately due to dataset scarcity. The possible period values announced were 128 or 227 days. A newly conducted four-month observing campaign in 2008 (fifty-nine observation nights) has provided fourteen times of maximum. From a period analysis of measured times of maximum, a Blazhko period of 62 +/- 2 days can be suggested. However, the present dataset is still not densely sampled enough to exclude that the measured period is sti…
V473 Lyrae is the only Galactic Cepheid with confirmed periodic amplitude and phase variations similar to the Blazhko effect observed in RR Lyrae stars. We collected all available photometric data and some radial velocity measurements to investigate the nature of the modulation. The comparison of the photometric and radial velocity amplitudes confirmed that the star pulsates in the second overtone. The extensive data set, spanning more than 40 years, allowed us to detect a secondary modulation cycle with a period of approximately 5300 days or 14.5 years. The secondary variations can be detecte…
We present the results of a photometry campaign of TU Com performed over a five-year time span. The analysis showed that the possible Blazhko period of 75 days published by the General Catalogue of Variable Stars is not correct. We identified two Blazhko periods of 43.6 and 45.5 days. This finding is based on measurement of 124 light maxima. A spectral analysis of the complete light curve confirmed these two periods. Besides the Blazhko amplitude and phase modulations, another long term periodic phase variation has been identified. This long term periodic variation affects the times of maximum…
