We have studied the effect of tidal deformability constraint given by the binary neutron star merger event GW170817 on the equations of state (EOS) of hybrid stars. The EOS are constructed by matching the hadronic EOS described by relativistic mean field (RMF) model and parameter sets NL3, TM1 and NL3$ωρ$ with the quark matter EOS described by modified MIT bag model, via Gibbs' construction. It is found that the tidal deformability constraints along with the lower bound on maximum mass ($M_{\rm max}=2.01\pm0.04M_\odot$) significantly limit the bag model parameter space ($B_{\rm eff}^{1/4}$, $a_4$). We also obtain upper limits on the radius of $1.4M_\odot$ and $1.6M_\odot$ stars as $R_{1.4}\leq13.2-13.5$ km and $R_{1.6}\leq13.2-13.4$ km, respectively for different hadronic EOS considered here.
This article studies the maximum mass limit of the quark star formed after the shock-induced phase transition of a cold neutron star. By employing hadronic and quark equation of state that satisfies the current mass bound, we use combustion adiabat conditions to find such a limit. The combustion adiabat condition results in a local or a global maximum pressure at an intermediate density range. The maximum pressure corresponds to a local or global maximum mass for the phase transformed hybrid star. The phase transition is usually exothermic if we have a local maximum mass. The criteria for exot…
We study quark-hadron hybrid stars with sharp phase transitions assuming that phase conversions at the interface are slow. Hadronic matter is described by a set of equations of state (EoS) based on the chiral effective field theory and quark matter by a generic bag model. Due to slow conversions at the interface, there is an extended region of stable hybrid stars with central densities above the density of the maximum mass star. We explore systematically the role of the transition pressure and the energy-density jump $Δε$ at the interface on some global properties of hybrid stars. We find that…
We present preliminary results of the study of intense magnetic fields effects on hybrid stars. For the description of the hadronic phase, we use the relativistic mean field approximation. For the quark matter phase, we employ the Field Correlator Method formalism. Once the the equation of state is built, we discuss the pressure anisotropy due the presence of the strong magnetic field. Finally, we calculate the structure of the compact stars using magnetized hybrid equations of state and their oscillation modes related with the emission of gravitational waves.
We investigate structures of hybrid stars, which feature quark core surrounded by a hadronic matter mantle, with super-strong toroidal magnetic fields in full general relativity. Modeling the equation of state (EOS) with a first order transition by bridging the MIT bag model for the description of quark matter and the nuclear EOS by Shen et al., we numerically construct thousands of the equilibrium configurations to study the effects of the phase transition. It is found that the appearance of the quark phase can affect distributions of the magnetic fields inside the hybrid stars, making the ma…
Hybrid hadron-quark equations of state that give rise a third family of stable compact stars have been shown to be compatible with the LIGO-Virgo event GW170817. Stable configurations in the third family are called hybrid hadron-quark stars. The equilibrium stable hybrid hadron-quark star branch is separated by the stable neutron star branch with a branch of unstable hybrid hadron-quark stars. The end-state of these unstable configurations has not been studied, yet, and it could have implications for the formation and existence of twin stars -- hybrid stars with the same mass as neutron stars …
In this paper we investigate the thermal evolution of hybrid stars, objects composed of a quark matter core, enveloped by ordinary hadronic matter. Our purpose is to investigate how important are the microscopic properties of the quark core to the thermal evolution of the star. In order to do that we use a simple MIT bag model for the quark core, and a relativistic mean field model for the hadronic envelope. By choosing different values for the microscopic parameters (bag constant, strange quark mass, strong coupling constant) we obtain hybrid stars with different quark core properties. We als…
The stable configurations of non-rotating and rotating hybrid stars composed of colour superconducting quark matter core are constructed using several equations of state (EOSs). We use a set of diverse EOSs for the nuclear matter which represents the low density phase. The EOSs at higher densities correspond to the quark matter in the colour superconducting phase and are computed within the NJL-like model for different values of the scalar diquark and vector current couplings strengths. The phase transition to the quark matter is computed by a Maxwell construction. We find that the stability o…

We study the possibility of a hadron-quark phase transition in the interior of neutron stars, taking into account different schematic evolutionary stages at finite temperature. Furthermore, we analyze the astrophysical properties of hot and cold hybrid stars, considering the constraint on maximum mass given by the pulsars J1614-2230 and J1614-2230. We obtain cold hybrid stars with maximum masses $\geq 2$ M$_{\odot}$. Our study also suggest that during the proto-hybrid star evolution a late phase transition between hadronic matter and quark matter could occur, in contrast with previous studies …
We study the cooling of hybrid stars coupling with spin-down. Due to the spin-down of hybrid stars, the interior density continuously increases, different neutrino reactions may be triggered(from the modified Urca process to the quark and nucleon direct Urca process) at different stages of evolution. We calculate the rate of neutrino emissivity of different reactions and simulate the cooling curves of the rotational hybrid stars. The results show the cooling curves of hybrid stars clearly depend on magnetic field if the direct urca reactions occur during the spin-down. Comparing the results of…
In this paper, we use the equation of state based on a modification of 2+1 flavors Nambu-Jona- Lasinio (NJL) model to study the quark matter of hybrid stars. For comparison, we utilize five EOSs of the relativistic mean-field (RMF) model to describe the hadronic phase. With the 3- window crossover interpolation approach, we try to construct relatively soft hybrid EOSs but find the maximum masses of hybrid stars do not differ too much. The results are quite close to two solar mass, which is consistent with the mass constraint of PSR J0348+0432. Furthermore it is noteworthy that the heaviest sta…
We aim to study the possibility of a hadron-quark phase transition in the interior of neutron stars, taking into account different schematic evolutionary stages at finite temperature. We also discuss the strange quark matter stability in the quark matter phase. Furthermore, we aim to analyze the astrophysical properties of hot and cold hybrid stars, considering the constraint on maximum mass given by the pulsars J1614-2230 and J0348+0432. We have developed a computational code to construct semi-analytical hybrid equations of state at fixed entropy per baryon and to obtain different families of…
We study the behavior of hybrid stars using an extended hadronic and quark SU(3) non-linear sigma model. The degrees of freedom change naturally, in this model, from hadrons to quarks as the density/temperature increases. At zero temperature, we reproduce massive neutron stars containing a core of hybrid matter of 2 km for the non-rotating case and 1.18 km and 0.87 km, in the equatorial and polar directions respectively, for stars rotating at the Kepler frequency (physical cases lie in between). The cooling of such stars is also analyzed.
In this work we revisit the quantum hadrodynamics (QHD) formalism to investigate hyperonic and hybrid stars with hyperon-meson couplings fixed via broken SU(6) group, in favor of a more general flavor group SU(3). We also employ an additional channel, the strangeness-hidden $ϕ$ meson, which couples only to the hyperons. In hybrid stars, the quark phase is built with the SU(3) NJL model also with an additional vector channel in the Lagrangian. We found that within the models chosen the hyperon puzzle cannot be avoided by the quark-hadron phase transition, once the hyperon threshold always happe…
The structure of a magnetized quark-hybrid stars (QHS) is modeled using a standard relativistic mean-field equation of state (EoS) for the description of hadronic matter. For quark matter we consider a bag model EoS which is modified perturbatively to account for the presence of a uniform magnetic field. The mass-radius (M-R) relationship, gravitational redshift and rotational Kepler periods of such stars are compared with those of standard neutron stars (NS).
We study the effects of high magnetic fields on the particle population and equation of state of hybrid stars using an extended hadronic and quark SU(3) non-linear realization of the sigma model. In this model the degrees of freedom change naturally from hadrons to quarks as the density and/or temperature increases. The effects of high magnetic fields and anomalous magnetic moment are visible in the macroscopic properties of the star, such as mass, adiabatic index, moment of inertia, and cooling curves. Moreover, at the same time that the magnetic fields become high enough to modify those prop…
We study rapidly rotating hybrid stars with the Dyson-Schwinger model for quark matter and the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body theory with realistic two-body and three-body forces for nuclear matter. We determine the maximum gravitational mass, equatorial radius, and rotation frequency of stable stellar configurations by considering the constraints of the Keplerian limit and the secular axisymmetric instability, and compare with observational data. We also discuss the rotational evolution for constant baryonic mass, and find a spinup phenomenon for supramassive stars before they collapse to b…
In this paper, we introduce a self-consistent mean field approximation to study the QCD phase transition and the structure of hybrid stars within the framework of NJL model. In our practice, a phenomenological parameter $α$ is introduced, which reflects the weights of "direct" channel and "exchange" channel under a finite chemical potential. The mass-radius relation is obtained by solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation using a crossover equation of state (EOS). We calculate the density distribution in a two solar-mass hybrid star to show the effects of different parameters. We also ca…
We study how the nature of a hybrid system (perfect fluid, solid or a mixture of them) could be related to the induction of general relativistic surface degrees of freedom on phase-splitting surfaces upon perturbation of its phases. We work in the scope of phase conversions in the vicinity of sharp phase transition surfaces whose timescales are either much smaller (rapid conversions) or larger (slow conversions) than the ones of the perturbations ($ω^{-1}$, where $ω$ is a characteristic frequency of oscillation of the star). In this first approach, perturbations are assumed to be purely radial…
Motivated by the recent discoveries of compact objects from LIGO/Virgo observations, we study the possibility of identifying some of these objects as compact stars made of dark matter called dark stars, or the mix of dark and nuclear matters called hybrid stars. In particular, in GW190814, a new compact object with 2.6 $M_{\odot}$ is reported. This could be the lightest black hole, the heaviest neutron star, and a dark or hybrid star. In this work, we extend the discussion on the interpretations of the recent LIGO/Virgo events as hybrid stars made of various self-interacting dark matter (SIDM)…
We investigate the stability of stars with a density discontinuity between a high-density core and a very low density mantle. Previous work on "strange dwarfs" suggested that such a discontinuity could stabilize stars that would have been classified as unstable by the conventional criteria based on extrema in the mass-radius relation. We investigate the stability of such stars by numerically solving the Sturm-Liouville equations for the lowest-energy modes of the star. We find that the conventional criteria are correct, and strange dwarfs are not stable.
The possible existence of hybrid stars is studied using several multi-quark interaction channels. The hadronic phase consists of an equation of state (EoS) with presently accepted nuclear matter properties and the quark model is constrained by the vacuum properties of several light mesons. The dependence of several NS properties on the different quark interactions is analyzed. We show that the present constraints from neutron star observations allow for the existence of hybrid stars with large strangeness content and large quark cores.
We describe an unambiguous gravitational-wave signature to identify the occurrence of a strong phase transition from hadronic matter to deconfined quark matter in neutron star mergers. Such a phase transition leads to a strong softening of the equation of state and hence to more compact merger remnants compared to purely hadronic models. If a phase transition takes place during merging, this results in a characteristic increase of the dominant postmerger gravitational-wave frequency relative to the tidal deformability characterizing the inspiral phase. By comparing results from different purel…
We model the cooling of hybrid neutron stars combining a microscopic nuclear equation of state in the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach with different quark models. We then analyze the neutron star cooling curves predicted by the different models and single out the preferred ones. We find that the possibility of neutron p-wave pairing can be excluded in our scenario.
Properties of hybrid stars with a mixed phase composed of asymmetric nuclear matter and strange quark matter are studied. The quark phase is investigated by the quark quasiparticle model with a self-consistent thermodynamic and statistical treatment. We present the stability windows of the strange quark matter with respect to the interaction coupling constant versus the bag constant. We find that the appearance of the quark-hadron mixed phases is associated with the meta-stable or unstable regions of the pure quark matter parameters. The mass-radius relation of the hybrid star is dominated by …
Gravitational wave observations of GW170817 placed bounds on the tidal deformabilities of compact stars allowing one to probe equations of state for matter at supranuclear densities. Here we design new parametrizations for hybrid hadron-quark equations of state, that give rise to low-mass twin stars, and test them against GW170817. We find that GW170817 is consistent with the coalescence of a binary hybrid star--neutron star. We also test and find that the I-Love-Q relations for hybrid stars in the third family agree with those for purely hadronic and quark stars within $\sim 3\%$ for both slo…
We study the possibility that the transition from hadron matter to quark matter at vanishing temperatures proceeds via crossover, similar to the crossover behavior found with lattice QCD studies at high temperatures. The purpose is to examine astrophysical consequences of this postulate by constructing hybrid star sequences fulfilling current experimental data.

It is shown that the unusual thermodynamic properties of matter within the region of two-phase coexistence in hybrid stars result in a change of the standard condition for beginning of convection. In particular, the thermal flux transported by convection may be directed towards the stellar center. We discuss favorable circumstances leading to such an effect of "inverse convection" and its possible influence on the thermal evolution of hybrid stars.

We introduce a two flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with 8-quark interactions in the scalar and the vector channel. With the lower density region described by the density-dependent relativistic mean field model we construct a hybrid equation of state. We especially focus on the 4-quark vector couplings and the 8-quark vector NJL couplings and allocate a region in this parameter subspace where hybrid stars with masses larger than $2M_\odot$ exist.
We study the effects of strangeness on the quark sector of a hybrid star equation of state. Since the model we use to describe quarks is the same as the one we use to describe hadrons, we can also study the effects of strangeness on the chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement phase transitions (first order or crossover). Finally, we analyze combined effects of hyperons and quarks on global properties of hybrid stars, like mass, radius and cooling profiles. It is found that a large amount of strangeness in the core is related to the generation of twin-star solutions, which can have the sa…
We investigate the effects of including strong charge-parity (CP) violating effects through axion fields in the microscopic equation of state of massive hybrid neutron stars. We assume that their cores contain deconfined quark matter and include the effects of axions via an effective 't Hooft determinant interaction. The hadronic crusts are described using different approaches in order to make our results more general. We find that the presence of axions stabilizes massive hybrid neutron stars against gravitational collapse by weakening the deconfinement phase transition and bringing it to low…
We propose three scenarios for compact hybrid stars composed of nuclear and dark matter. These hybrid stars could provide alternative interpretations to the LIGO/Virgo events GW170817 and GW190425. To demonstrate our proposal, we solve the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff configurations of hybrid stars by using the SLy4, APR4, and SKb equations of state (EoS) for nuclear matter, and an EoS for a bosonic self interacting dark matter (SIDM) proposed by Colpi et al \cite{Colpi:1986ye}. We then obtain their mass-radius and tidal Love number (TLN)-mass relations, and further examine the possible saddle i…
We consider the possibility of having hybrid stars with a phase transition from hadrons into strange matter at the core of a neutron star in b equilibrium. For the hadron phase equation of state (EoS) the quark-meson coupling model is used, while the MIT bag model is used to describe the strange matter phase. The phase transition is treated using the Gibbs construction method and results are calculated and checked against the observational constaints imposed on the EoS. The results are also compared with the hadronic EoS including hyperons, F-QMC700
In this contribution, we describe new chemically-equilibrated charge-neutral hybrid equations of state for neutron stars. They present a first-order phase transition to quark matter and differentiate by the particle population considered and how these particles interact. While some equations of state contain just nucleons and up, down-quarks, others also contain hyperons, Delta baryons, and strange quarks. The hybrid equations of state, together with corresponding hadronic ones, are available on the CompOSE repository and can be used for different astrophysical applications.
The special point is a feature unique to models of hybrid neutron stars. It represents a location on their mass--radius sequences that is insensitive to the phase transition density. We consider hybrid neutron stars with a core of deconfined quark matter that obeys a constant--sound--speed (CSS) equation of state model and provide a fit formula for the coordinates of the special point as functions of the squared sound speed ($c_s^2$) and pressure scale ($A$) parameters. Using the special point mass as a proxy for the maximum mass of the hybrid stars we derive limits for the CSS model parameter…
We investigate the equation of state(EoS) and the effect of the hadron-quark phase transition of strong interaction matter in compact stars. The hadron matter is described with the relativistic mean field theory, and the quark matter is described with the Dyson-Schwinger equation approach of QCD. The complete EoS of the hybrid star matter is constructed with not only the Gibbs construction but also the 3-window interpolation. The mass-radius relation of hybrid stars is also investigated. We find that, although the EoSs of both the hadron matter with hyperon and $Δ$-baryon and the quark matter a…
We present a Bayesian analysis for a new class of realistic models of two-phase equations of state (EoS) for hybrid stars and demonstrate that the observation of a pair of high-mass twin stars would have a sufficient discriminating power to favor hybrid EoS with a strong first order phase transition over alternative EoS. Such a measurement would provide evidence for the existence of a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram.
In this work we study the effects of strong magnetic fields on hybrid stars by using a full general-relativity approach, solving the coupled Maxwell-Einstein equation in a self-consistent way. The magnetic field is assumed to be axi-symmetric and poloidal. We take into consideration the anisotropy of the energy-momentum tensor due to the magnetic field, magnetic field effects on equation of state, the interaction between matter and the magnetic field (magnetization), and the anomalous magnetic moment of the hadrons. The equation of state used is an extended hadronic and quark SU(3) non-linear …
We present a systematic investigation of the possible locations for the special point (SP), a unique feature of hybrid neutron stars in the mass-radius. The study is performed within the two-phase approach where the high-density (quark matter) phase is described by the constant-sound-speed (CSS) equation of state (EoS) and the nuclear matter phase around saturation density is varied from very soft (APR) to stiff (DD2 with excluded nucleon volume. Different construction schemes for the deconfinement transition are applied: Maxwell construction, mixed phase construction and parabolic interpolati…
It is understood that strong magnetic fields affect the structure of neutron stars. Nevertheless, many calculations for magnetized neutron stars are still being performed using symmetric solutions of Einstein's equations. In this conference proceeding, we review why this is not the correct procedure and we also discuss the effects of magnetic fields on the stellar population and temperature profiles.
In this contribution, we outline a new 2-phase description of the quark-nuclear matter hybrid equation of state that takes into account effects of phase space occupation (excluded volume) in both, the hadronic and the quark matter phases. For the nuclear matter phase, the reduction of the available volume at increasing density leads to a stiffening, while for the quark matter phase a reduction of the effective string tension in the confining density functional is obtained. The deconfinement phase transition in the resulting hybrid equation of state is sensitive to both excluded volume effects.…
We describe two aspects of the physics of hybrid stars that have a sharp interface between a core of quark matter and a mantle of nuclear matter. Firstly, we analyze the mass-radius relation. We describe a generic "Constant Speed of Sound" (CSS) parameterization of the quark matter equation of state (EoS), in which the speed of sound is independent of density. In terms of the three parameters of the CSS EoS we obtain the phase diagram of possible forms of the hybrid star mass-radius relation, and we show how observational constraints on the maximum mass and typical radius of neutron stars can …
