Properties of hybrid stars with a mixed phase composed of asymmetric nuclear matter and strange quark matter are studied. The quark phase is investigated by the quark quasiparticle model with a self-consistent thermodynamic and statistical treatment. We present the stability windows of the strange quark matter with respect to the interaction coupling constant versus the bag constant. We find that the appearance of the quark-hadron mixed phases is associated with the meta-stable or unstable regions of the pure quark matter parameters. The mass-radius relation of the hybrid star is dominated by the equation of state of quark matter rather than nuclear matter. Due to the appearance of mixed phase, the mass of hybrid star is reduced to 1.64 M$_{\odot}$ with radius 10.6 km by comparison with neutron star.
In this work a density dependent quark model is revisited, its thermodynamic consistency checked and the stability window for absolutely stable quark matter obtained. The hypotheses of both pure quark matter with equal quark chemical potentials and stellar matter subject to chemical stability and charge neutrality are investigated. The parameters that appear in the density dependent mass and satisfy the Bodmer-Witten conjecture are then used to compute the masses and radii of strange stars. We show that the obtained values are compatible with the recently observed massive stars.
We investigate the existence of possible stable strange matter and related stability windows at finite temperature for different models that are generally applied to describe quark stars, namely, the quark-mass density dependent model, the MIT bag model and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We emphasize that, although the limits for stable strange matter depend on a comparison with the ground state of 56Fe, which is a zero temperature state, the quantity that has to be used in the search for strange matter in proto-quark stars is the free energy and we analyze stability windows up to temperatures …
The possible existence of hybrid stars is studied using several multi-quark interaction channels. The hadronic phase consists of an equation of state (EoS) with presently accepted nuclear matter properties and the quark model is constrained by the vacuum properties of several light mesons. The dependence of several NS properties on the different quark interactions is analyzed. We show that the present constraints from neutron star observations allow for the existence of hybrid stars with large strangeness content and large quark cores.
We discuss the 3-window modeling of cold, dense QCD matter equations of state at density relevant to neutron star properties. At low baryon density, n_B < ~ 2n_s (n_s: nuclear saturation density), we utilize purely hadronic equations of state that are constrained by empirical observations at density n_B ~ n_s and neutron star radii. At high density, n_B > ~ 5n_s, we use the percolated quark matter equations of state which must be very stiff to pass the two-solar mass constraints. The intermediate domain at 2 < n_B/n_s < 5 is described as neither purely hadronic nor percolated quark matter, and…
We study the possibility that the transition from hadron matter to quark matter at vanishing temperatures proceeds via crossover, similar to the crossover behavior found with lattice QCD studies at high temperatures. The purpose is to examine astrophysical consequences of this postulate by constructing hybrid star sequences fulfilling current experimental data.
Cold dense quark matter is in a crystalline color superconducting phase wherever pairing occurs between species of quarks with chemical potentials whose difference δμlies within an appropriate window. If the interaction between quarks is modeled as point-like, this window is rather narrow. We show that when the interaction between quarks is modeled as single-gluon exchange, the window widens by about a factor of ten at accessible densities and by much larger factors at higher density. This striking enhancement reflects the increasingly (1+1)-dimensional nature of the physics at weaker and weak…
We study the generation of strong large scale magnetic fields in compact stars containing degenerate quark matter with unbroken chiral symmetry. The magnetic field growth is owing to the magnetic field instability driven by the electroweak interaction of quarks. In this system we predict the enhancement of the seed magnetic field $10^{12}\,\text{G}$ to the strengths $(10^{14}-10^{15})\,\text{G}$. In our analysis we use the typical parameters of the quark matter in the core of a hybrid star or in a quark star. We also apply of the obtained results to model the generation of magnetic fields in m…
We study the role of finite-size effects at the hadron-quark phase transition in a new hybrid equation of state constructed from an ab-initio Brückner-Hartree-Fock equation of state with the realistic Bonn-B potential for the hadronic phase and a covariant non-local Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model for the quark phase. We construct static hybrid star sequences and find that our model can support stable hybrid stars with an onset of quark matter below $2 M_\odot$ and a maximum mass above $2.17 M_\odot$ in agreement with recent observations. If the finite-size effects are taken into account the core is…
By a new approach introducing a "3-window model" and constructing phenomenologically an equation of state for the hadron-quark (HQ) transition region, possible maximum mass of neutron stars (NSs) is discussed. It is found that neutron stars (NSs) with HQ transition core are able to have a mass exceeding two-solar mass, consistent with massive NSs recently observed.
We consider the possibility of having hybrid stars with a phase transition from hadrons into strange matter at the core of a neutron star in b equilibrium. For the hadron phase equation of state (EoS) the quark-meson coupling model is used, while the MIT bag model is used to describe the strange matter phase. The phase transition is treated using the Gibbs construction method and results are calculated and checked against the observational constaints imposed on the EoS. The results are also compared with the hadronic EoS including hyperons, F-QMC700
A hybrid model for baryons based on a dynamical interplay between relativistic three--quark bound states and soliton configurations of mesons is constructed. The Bethe-Salpeter equation for diquarks and the Faddeev equation for diquark-quark bound states in the background of a soliton is solved. The results show that baryons are very much like hybrids containing both, solitonic meson clouds and three--quark correlations.
A two-phase description of the quark-nuclear matter hybrid equation of state that takes into account the effect of excluded volume in both the hadronic and the quark matter phases is introduced. The nuclear phase manifests a reduction of the available volume as density increases, leading to a stiffening of the matter. The quark matter phase displays a reduction of the effective string tension in the confining density functional from available volume contributions. The nuclear equation of state is based upon the relativistic density functional model DD2 with excluded volume. The quark matter is…
Hybrid stars with a quark phase described by the Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model are studied. The hadron-quark model used to determine the stellar matter equation of state favors the appearance of quark matter: the coincidence of the deconfinement and chiral transitions and a low vacuum constituent quark mass. These two properties are essential to build equations of state that predict pure quark matter in the center of neutron stars. The effect of vector-isoscalar and vector-isovector terms is discussed, and it is shown that the vector-isoscalar terms are necessary to describe 2$M_\odot$ hybrid sta…
The assumption underlying the existence of quark stars is based on the Bodmer-Witten conjecture. These authors have claimed that it is possible that the interior of a neutron-like star does not consist primarily of hadrons, but rather of the strange matter (SM). Strange matter is composed of deconfined quarks, including up, down and strange quarks, plus the leptons necessary to ensure charge neutrality and β-equilibrium. This possibility arises because a phase transition from hadronic to quark phase is possible at densities present in the interior of neutron stars. It has been argued that stra…
We analyze the impact of several multi-quark interaction channels on the properties of hybrid stars. Four and eight vector interactions were included in the $SU(3)$ NJL model to describe the quark matter, and all vector like interactions were investigated. The hybrid stars were built starting from an hadronic EoS that satisfy presently accepted nuclear matter properties and considering the quark model constrained by the vacuum properties of several light mesons. The interplay between the 8-quark vector interaction and the 4-quark isovector-vector interaction determine the size of the quark cor…
The relativistic five-quark equations are found in the framework of the dispersion relation technique. The behavior of the low-energy five-particle amplitude is determined by its leading singularities in the pair invariant masses. The solutions of these equations using the method based on the extraction leading singularities of the amplitudes are obtained. The mass spectra of nucleon and delta-isobar hybrid baryons are calculated. The calculations of hybrid baryon amplitudes estimate the contributions of four subamplitudes. The main contributions to the hybrid baryon amplitude are determined b…
We explore the possibility of obtaining heavy hybrid stars within the framework of the two flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with 8-quark interactions in the scalar and in the vector channel. The main impact of the 8-quark scalar channel is to reduce the onset of quark matter, while the 8-quark vector channel acts to stiff the equation of state at high densities. Within the parameter space where the 4-quark vector channel is small, and the 8-quark vector channel sizeable, stable stars with $2 M_\odot$ and above are found to hold quark matter in their cores.
The appearance of quark matter in the core of hybrid stars is a fundamental issue in such compact stars. The central density of these stars is sufficiently high such that nuclear matter undergoes a further change into other exotic phases that consist of hyperons and quarks. However, the equation of state (EOS) for the high-density matter is still not clear and several recent observations have indicated the limitations of the EOSs; theoretical studies should try to elucidate the EOSs. It is believed that the inner regions of the stars should consist of a mixed hadron-quark phase. We study the m…
We study the hadron-quark phase transition at finite temperature in the interior of protoneutron stars, combining the Dyson-Schwinger model for quark matter with the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach for hadronic matter. We discuss the dependence of the results on different nuclear three-body forces and on details of the quark model. %Compared to the bag model, the transition from the hadron phase %(without hyperons) to the quark phase appears at large density. A maximum mass exceeding two solar masses can be obtained with a strong three-body force and suitable parameter values in the Dyson-Schw…
Many of the $XYZ$ resonances observed by the Belle, Babar, CLEO and BESIII collaborations in the past decade are difficult to interpret as conventional quark-antiquark mesons, motivating the consideration of scenarios such as multi-quark states, meson molecules, and hybrids. After a brief introduction to QCD sum-rule methods, we provide a brief but comprehensive review of the mass spectra of the quarkonium-like tetraquark states $qQ\bar q\bar Q$, doubly charmed/bottomed tetraquark states $QQ\bar q\bar q$ and the heavy quarkonium hybrid states $\bar QGQ$ in the QCD sum rules approach. Possible …
In this paper we introduce an equation of state (EOS) of quark matter within the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) to study the structure of compact stars. The smooth crossover from hadronic matter to quark matter in the hybrid star is studied. We compare different strategies to obtain crossover EOSs and find a new way to construct two-solar-mass hybrid stars with even a relatively soft quark EOS, while earlier works show that the quark EOS should be stiff enough to support a massive hybrid star.
We use gauge/string duality to model some hybrid heavy-quark potentials. The potentials under consideration can't be described by a single Nambu-Goto string. This is why we call them "exotic". For $Σ_u^-$, the result is in quite good agreement with lattice simulations.
We study rapidly rotating hybrid stars with the Dyson-Schwinger model for quark matter and the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body theory with realistic two-body and three-body forces for nuclear matter. We determine the maximum gravitational mass, equatorial radius, and rotation frequency of stable stellar configurations by considering the constraints of the Keplerian limit and the secular axisymmetric instability, and compare with observational data. We also discuss the rotational evolution for constant baryonic mass, and find a spinup phenomenon for supramassive stars before they collapse to b…
The phase transition to a deconfined phase is studied and the consequences in the formation of neutron stars are investigated. We use the quark-meson-coupling model for the hadron matter and the MIT Bag model for the quark matter in order to build the appropriate equations of state for the hybrid stars. The properties of the stars are then calculated. The differences between unpaired and color-flavor locked quark matter are discussed.
Background: At high density deconfinement of hadronic matter may occur leading to quark matter. The immense densities reached in the inner core of massive neutron stars may be sufficient to facilitate the transition. Purpose: To investigate a crossover transition between two phenomenological models which epitomise QCD in two different regimes, while incorporating the influence of quark degrees of freedom in both. Method: We use the Hartree-Fock quark-meson coupling model and the proper time regularised three flavour NJL model to describe hadronic and quark matter, respectively. Hybrid equation…
We discuss whether a low-lying hybrid baryon should be defined as a three quark - gluon bound state or as three quarks moving on an excited adiabatic potential. We show that the latter definition becomes exact, not only for very heavy quarks, but also for specific dynamics. We review the literature on the signatures of hybrid baryons, with specific reference to strong hadronic decays, electromagnetic couplings, diffractive production and production in psi decay.
The equation of state for quark matter is derived for a nonlocal, chiral quark model within the mean field approximation. Special emphasis is on the occurrence of a diquark condensate which signals a phase transition to color superconductivity and its effects on the equation of state. We present a fit formula for the Bag pressure, which is density dependent in case when the quark matter is color superconducting. We calculate the quark star configurations by solving the Tolman- Oppenheimer- Volkoff equations and demonstrate the effects of diquark condensation on the stability of hybrid stars fo…
Conventional and hybrid light quark baryons are constructed in the non-relativistic flux-tube model of Isgur and Paton, which is motivated by lattice QCD. The motion of the flux tube with the three quark positions fixed, except for center of mass corrections, is discussed. It is shown that the problem can be reduced to the independent motion of the junction and the strings connecting the junction to the quarks. The important role played by quark-exchange symmetry in constraining the flavor structure of (hybrid) baryons is emphasized. The flavor, quark spin S, total spin J, and parity P of the …
Using a nonlocal extension of the SU(3) Nambu-Jona Lasinio model, which reproduces several of the key features of Quantum Chromodynamics, we show that mixed phases of deconfined quarks and confined hadrons (quark-hybrid matter) may exist in the cores of neutron stars as massive as around 2.1 M_Sun. The radii of these objects are found to be in the canonical range of $\sim 12-13$ km. According to our study, the transition to pure quark matter does not occur in stable neutron stars, but is shifted to neutron stars which are unstable against radial oscillations. The implications of our study for …
The recent discovery of the two-solar mass neutron stars $J1614-2230~(1.97 \pm 0.04 M_{\odot})$ and $J0348+0432~(2.01 \pm 0.04 M_{\odot})$ allows to consider the possible existence of deconfined quarks in the cores of neutron stars. Based on a non-local extension of the $SU(3)$ Nambu Jona-Lasinio model with vector interactions to describe the quark matter phase, and a non-linear Walecka model to represent the hadronic phase, a phase transition between these two phases can be constructed via the Gibbs conditions and imposing global electric charge neutrality condition. Depending on the strength…
We perform a study of the possible existence of hybrid stars with color superconducting quark cores using a specific hadronic model in a combination with an NJL-type quark model. It is shown that the constituent mass of the non-strange quarks in vacuum is a very important parameter that controls the beginning of the hadron-quark phase transition. At relatively small values of the mass, the first quark phase that appears is the two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) phase which, at larger densities, is replaced by the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase. At large values of the mass, on the other ha…
We study the effects of the gapless color-flavor locked (gCFL) phase on the equation of state of strongly interacting matter in the range of baryonic chemical potential involved in a compact star. We analyze the possibility of a phase transition from hadronic matter to gCFL quark matter and we discuss, for different values of the strange quark mass and diquark coupling strength, the existence of a gCFL phase in quark or hybrid stars. The mass-radius relation and the structure of compact stars containing the gCFL phase are shown and the physical relevance of this superconducting phase inside a …
We investigate implications of quark-hadron duality for hybrid mesons in the large-Nc limit. A simple formalism is developed which implements duality for QCD two-point functions of currents of quark bilinears, with any number of gluons. We argue that the large-Nc meson masses share a common parameter, which is related to the QCD string tension. This parameter is fixed from correlators of conserved vector and axial-vector currents, and using lattice QCD determinations of the string tension. Our results predict towers of hybrid mesons which, within expected 1/Nc corrections, naturally accommodat…
We discuss the allowed decays of a hybrid meson in the heavy quark limit. We deduce that an important decay will be into a heavy quark non-hybrid state and a light quark meson, in other words, the de-excitation of an excited gluonic string by emission of a light quark-antiquark pair. We discuss the study of hadronic decays from the lattice in the heavy quark limit and apply this approach to explore the transitions from a spin-exotic hybrid to $χ_b η$ and $χ_b S$ where $S$ is a scalar meson. We obtain a signal for the transition emitting a scalar meson and we discuss the phenomenological implic…
A unique feature of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of strong interactions, is the possibility for gluonic degrees of freedom to participate in the construction of physical hadrons, which are color singlets, in an analogous manner to valence quarks. Hadrons with no valence quarks are called glueballs, while hadrons where both gluons and valence quarks combine to form a color singlet are called hybrids. The unambiguous identification of such states among the experimental hadron spectrum has been thus far not possible. Glueballs are particularly difficult to establish experimentally sin…
We determine characteristic timescales for the viscous damping of r-mode oscillations in rapidly rotating compact stars that contain quark matter. We present results for the color-flavor-locked (CFL) phase of dense quark matter, in which the up, down and strange quarks are gapped, as well as the normal (ungapped) quark phase. While the ungapped quark phase supports a temperature window between 10^8 K and 5x10^9 K where the r-mode is damped even for rapid rotation, the r-mode in a rapidly rotating pure CFL star is not damped in the temperature range 10^10 K - 10^11 K. Rotating hybrid stars with…
We analyze the equation of state of 2+1 flavor lattice QCD at zero baryon density by constructing the simple quark-hadron hybrid model that has both quark and hadron components simultaneously. We calculate hadron and quark contribution separately and parameterizing those to match with LQCD data. Lattice data on the equation of state are decomposed into hadron and quark components by using the model. The transition temperature is defined by the temperature at which the hadron component is equal to the quark one in the equation of state. The transition temperature thus obtained is about 215 MeV …
We study the hadron-quark phase transition in the interior of neutron stars. For the hadronic sector, we use a microscopic equation of state involving nucleons and hyperons derived within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body theory with realistic two-body and three-body forces. For the description of quark matter, we employ the Dyson-Schwinger approach and compare with the MIT bag model. We calculate the structure of neutron star interiors comprising both phases and find that with the Dyson-Schwinger model, the hadron-quark phase transition takes place only when hyperons are excluded, and that…
We show the possible existence of compact stars having a surface composed of a mixed phase of quarks and hadrons. This scenario can be realized both for self-bound stars, satisfying the so-called Witten-Bodmer hypothesis, and for gravitationally bound stars. This class of solutions of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation can be obtained in all the models we discuss, within a physically acceptable range of values of the model parameters.
We study the properties of two-flavor quark matter in the Dyson-Schwinger model and investigate the possible consequences for hybrid neutron stars, with particular regard to the two-solar-mass limit. We find that with some extreme values of the model parameters, the mass fraction of two-flavor quark matter in heavy neutron stars can be as high as 30 percent and the possible energy release during the conversion from nucleonic neutron stars to hybrid stars can reach $10^{52}\;$erg.
Recent findings on the spectrum of heavy-quark mesons from computer simulations of quarks and gluons in lattice QCD are summarized, with particular attention to quark-antiquark states bound by an excited gluon field. The validity of a Born-Oppenheimer treatment for such systems is discussed. Recent results on glueball masses, the light-quark 1-+ hybrid meson mass, and the static three-quark potential are summarized.
Density-dependent relations among saturation properties of symmetric nuclear matter and hyperonic matter, properties of hadron-(strange) quark hybrid stars are discussed by applying the conserving nonlinear $σ$-$ω$-$ρ$ hadronic mean-field theory. Nonlinear interactions that will be renormalized as effective coupling constants, effective masses and sources of equations of motion are constructed self-consistently by maintaining thermodynamic consistency to the mean-field approximation. The coupling constants expected from the hadronic mean-field model and SU(6) quark model for the vector couplin…
We study cold dense quark matter and hybrid neutron stars with a Dyson-Schwinger quark model and various choices of the quark-gluon vertex. We obtain the equation of state of quark matter in beta equilibrium and investigate the hadron-quark phase transition in combination with a hadronic equation of state derived within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body theory. Comparing with the results for quark matter with the rainbow approximation, the Ball-Chiu ansatz and the 1BC ansatz for the quark-gluon vertex lead to a reduction of the effective interaction at finite chemical potential, qualitative…
The density in the core of neutron stars can reach values of about 5 to 10 times nuclear matter saturation density. It is, therefore, a natural assumption that hadrons may have dissolved into quarks under such conditions, forming a hybrid star. This star will have an outer region of hadronic matter and a core of quark matter or even a mixed state of hadrons and quarks. In order to investigate such phases, we discuss different model approaches that can be used in the study of compact stars as well as being applicable to a wider range of temperatures and densities. One major model ingredient, th…
We investigate the possible sequels, for the hybrid compact stars consisting of nucleons, hyperons and three flavour color-flavor-locked quarks phase under global neutrality and chemical equilibrium conditions. The hadron equations of state are computed within the framework of energy density functionals based on the relativistic mean field theory by employing two different model parameterizations. The quarks matter phase of equation of state is computed by using Quarks Quasiparticle model derived from a non-relativistic energy density-functional approach. A plausible set of hybrid equations of…
For the past 20 years it had been thought that the coexistence phase of the confined hadronic and quark matter phases, assumed to be a first order transition, was strictly excluded from neutron stars. This, however, was due to a seemingly innocuous idealization which has approximated away important physics. The reason is that neutron stars constitute multi-component bodies rather than single-component ones formerly (and incorrectly) used to describe the deconfinement phase transition in neutron stars. So, contrary to earlier claims, `neutron' stars may very well contain quark matter in their c…
Hadron--quark mixed phase is expected in a wide region of the inner structure of hybrid stars. However, we show that the hadron--quark mixed phase should be restricted to a narrower region to because of the charge screening effect. The narrow region of the mixed phase seems to explain physical phenomena of neutron stars such as the strong magnetic field and glitch phenomena, and it would give a new cooling curve for the neutron star.
We present the recent progress of the hybrid quark-meson-nucleon model for multi-messenger astronomy that unifies the thermodynamics of quark and hadronic degrees of freedom. The obtained equation of state is in accordance with nuclear matter properties at saturation density and with the flow constraint from heavy ion collision experiments. The mass-radius relations and tidal deformabilities for compact stars are calculated and compared with the latest astrophysical observations. The phase diagram of the isospin-symmetirc matter is studied as well in terms of the higher-order cumulants of the …
In this paper, we use the recent updated source properties of GW170817 to constrain the hybrid equation of state (EOS) constructed by a three-window modeling between the hadronic EOS and quark EOS. Specifically, the hadronic EOS is described by NL3$ωρ$ model whose corresponding pure neutron star (NS) is already excluded by the constraint of tidal deformability (TD) from GW170817, and the quark EOS is calculated with 2+1 flavors Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. We also consider other four constraints on the hybrid EOS. As a result, we find the parameter set ($B^{\frac{1}{4}}, \tildeμ, Γ$) can be…
A QCD-motivated dynamical-quasiparticle model with parameters adjusted to reproduce the lattice-QCD equation of state is extrapolated from region of high temperatures and moderate baryonic densities to the domain of high baryonic densities and zero temperature. The resulting equation of state matched with realistic hadronic equations of state predicts a phase transition into the quark phase at higher densities than those reachable in neutron star interiors. This excludes the possibility of the existence of hybrid (hadron-quark) stars. Pure quark stars are possible and have low masses, small ra…
