A definition of frames in Krein spaces is proposed which extends the concept of $J$-frames defined by J.I. Giribet et al., J. Math. Anal. Appl. ${\textbf{393}}$ (2012), 122-137. The principal difference consists in the fact that a $J$-frame is related to maximal definite subspaces $\mathcal{M}_\pm$ which are not assumed to be uniformly definite. The latter allows one to extend the collection of $J$-frames. In particular, some complete $J$-orthogonal sequences and $J$-orthogonal Schauder bases can be interpreted as $J$-frames.
Extensions of dual definite subspaces to dual maximal definite ones are described. The concepts of dual quasi maximal subspaces and quasi basis are introduced and studied. The obtained results are applied to the classification of C-symmetries.
In this paper we study the maximal subspaces of continuous n-homogeneous polynomials on complex and real non separable Banach spaces. In the real case we will prove that if P is a 2-homogeneous polynomial and if there exist a k-dimensional P-maximal subspace then every P-maximal subspace is k-dimensional.
We describe necessary and sufficient conditions for a $J$-dissipative operator in a Krein space to have maximal semidefinite invariant subspaces. The semigroup properties of the restrictions of an operator to these subspaces are studied. Applications are given to the case when an operator admits matrix representation with respect to the canonical decomposition of the space. The main conditions are given in the terms of the interpolation theory of Banach spaces.
We define embedding of an $n$-dimensional normed space into $L_{-p},\ 0<p<n$ by extending analytically with respect to $p$ the corresponding property of the classical $L_p$-spaces. The well-known connection between embeddings into $L_p$ and positive definite functions is extended to the case of negative $p$ by showing that a normed space embeds in $L_{-p}$ if and only if $\|x\|^{-p}$ is a positive definite distribution. Using this criterion, we generalize the recent solutions to the 1938 Schoenberg's problems by proving that the spaces $\ell_q^n,\ 2<q\le \infty$ embed in $L_{-p}$ if and only i…
This paper is about certain linear subspaces of Banach SN spaces (that is to say Banach spaces which have a symmetric nonexpansive linear map into their dual spaces). We apply our results to monotone linear subspaces of the product of a Banach space and its dual. In this paper, we establish several new results and also give improved proofs of some known ones in both the general and the special contexts.
Let $(Ω,Σ,μ)$ be a measure space and $1< p < +\infty$. In this paper we show that, under quite general conditions, the set $L_{p}(Ω) - \bigcup\limits_{1 \leq q < p}L_{q}(Ω)$ is maximal spaceable, that is, it contains (except for the null vector) a closed subspace $F$ of $L_{p}(Ω)$ such that $\dim(F) = \dim(L_{p}(Ω))$. We also show that if those conditions are not fulfilled, then even the larger set $L_p(Ω) - L_q(Ω)$, $1 \leq q < p$, may fail to be maximal spaceable. The aim of the results presented here is, among others, to generalize all the previous work (since the 1960's) related to the lin…
We consider subspaces of Morrey spaces defined in terms of various vanishing properties of functions. Such subspaces were recently used to describe the closure of $C_0^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$ in Morrey norm. We show that these subspaces are invariant with respect to some classical operators of harmonic analysis, such as the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator, singular type operators and Hardy operators. We also show that the vanishing properties defining those subspaces are preserved under the action of Riesz potential operators and fractional maximal operators.
Let $\gH$ be a Hilbert space and let $A$ be a simple symmetric operator in $\gH$ with equal deficiency indices $d:=n_\pm(A)<\infty$. We show that if, for all $ł$ in an open interval $I\subset\bR$, the dimension of defect subspaces $\gN_ł(A)(=\Ker (A^*-ł))$ coincides with $d$, then every self-adjoint extension $\wt A\supset A$ has no continuous spectrum in $I$ and the point spectrum of $\wt A$ is nowhere dense in $I$. Application of this statement to differential operators makes it possible to generalize the known results by Weidmann to the case of an ordinary differential expression with both …
A frame is a system of vectors $S$ in Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}$ with properties which allow one to write algorithms for the two operations, analysis and synthesis, relative to $S$, for all vectors in $\mathscr{H}$; expressed in norm-convergent series. Traditionally, frame properties are expressed in terms of an $S$-Gramian, $G_{S}$ (an infinite matrix with entries equal to the inner product of pairs of vectors in $S$); but still with strong restrictions on the given system of vectors in $S$, in order to guarantee frame-bounds. In this paper we remove these restrictions on $G_{S}$, and we obt…
We relax assumptions for a dissipative operator in Krein space to possess a maximal non-negative invariant subspace. Our main result is a generalization of a well-known Pontrjagin-Krein-Langer-Azizov theorem. Then we investigate the semigroup properties of the restriction of the operator onto the invariant subspace.
The \emph{relative projection constant} $λ(Y, X)$ of normed spaces $Y \subset X$ is defined as $λ(Y, X) = \inf \{ ||P|| : P \in \mathcal{P}(X, Y) \}$, where $\mathcal{P}(X, Y)$ denotes the set of all continuous projections from $X$ onto $Y$. By the well-known result of Bohnenblust for every $n$-dimensional normed space $X$ and its subspace $Y$ of codimension $1$ the inequality $λ(Y, X) \leq 2 - \frac{2}{n}$ holds. The main goal of the paper is to study the equality case in the theorem of Bohnenblust. We establish an equivalent condition for the equality $λ(Y, X) = 2 - \frac{2}{n}$ and present …
In this paper we derive the maximal subspace of positive numbers, for which the restricted maximal operator of Fejér means in this subspace is bounded from the Hardy space $H_{p}$ to the space $L_{p}$ for all $0<p\leq 1/2.$ Moreover, we prove that the result is in a sense sharp.
The theorem on the existence of maximal nonnegative invariant subspaces for a special class of dissipative operators in Hilbert space with indefinite inner product is proved in the paper. It is shown in addition that the spectra of the restrictions of these operators on the corresponding invariant subspaces lie in the closed upper half-plane. The obtained theorem is a generalization of well-known results of L.S.Pontrjagin, H.K.Langer, M.G.Krein and T.Ja.Azizov devoted to this subject.
In this paper we introduce a new technique to prove the existence of closed subspaces of maximal dimension inside sets of topological vector sequence spaces. The results we prove cover some sequence spaces not studied before in the context of spaceability and settle some questions on classical sequence spaces that remained open.
If $Q$ is a real, symmetric and positive definite $n\times n$ matrix, and $B$ a real $n\times n$ matrix whose eigenvalues have negative real parts, we consider the Ornstein--Uhlenbeck semigroup on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with covariance $Q$ and drift matrix $B$. Our main result says that the associated maximal operator is of weak type $(1,1)$ with respect to the invariant measure. The proof has a geometric gist and hinges on the "forbidden zones method" previously introduced by the third author.
We resolve a longstanding open problem by reformulating the Grassmannian fusion frames to the case of mixed dimensions and show that this satisfies the proper properties for the problem. In order to compare elements of mixed dimension, we use a classical embedding to send all fusion frame elements to points on a higher dimensional Euclidean sphere, where they are given "equal footing". Over the embedded images -- a compact subset in the higher dimensional embedded sphere -- we define optimality in terms of the corresponding restricted coding problem. We then construct infinite families of solu…
An exact phase-retrievable frame $\{f_{i}\}_{i}^{N}$ for an $n$-dimensional Hilbert space is a phase-retrievable frame that fails to be phase-retrievable if any one element is removed from the frame. Such a frame could have different lengths. We shall prove that for the real Hilbert space case, exact phase-retrievable frame of length $N$ exists for every $2n-1\leq N\leq n(n+1)/2$. For arbitrary frames we introduce the concept of redundancy with respect to its phase-retrievability and the concept of frames with exact PR-redundancy. We investigate the phase-retrievability by studying its maximal…
We continue the study of optimal chordal packings, with emphasis on packing subspaces of dimension greater than one. Following a principle outlined in a previous work, where the authors use maximal affine block designs and maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases to construct Grassmannian $2$-designs, we show that their method extends to other types of block designs, leading to a plethora of optimal subspace packings characterized by the orthoplex bound. More generally, we show that any optimal chordal packing is necessarily a fusion frame and that its spatial complement is also optimal.
A closed subspace of a Banach space $\cX$ is almost-invariant for a collection $\cS$ of bounded linear operators on $\cX$ if for each $T \in \cS$ there exists a finite-dimensional subspace $\cF_T$ of $\cX$ such that $T \cY \subseteq \cY + \cF_T$. In this paper, we study the existence of almost-invariant subspaces of infinite dimension and codimension for various classes of Banach and Hilbert space operators. We also examine the structure of operators which admit a maximal commuting family of almost-invariant subspaces. In particular, we prove that if $T$ is an operator on a separable Hilbert s…
The main focus of this paper is to study multi-valued linear monotone operators in the contexts of locally convex spaces via the use of their Fitzpatrick and Penot functions. Notions such as maximal monotonicity, uniqueness, negative-infimum, and (dual-) representability are studied and criteria are provided.
The construction of optimal line packings in real or complex Euclidean spaces has shown to be a tantalizingly difficult task, because it includes the problem of finding maximal sets of equiangular lines. In the regime where equiangular lines are not possible, some optimal packings are known, for example, those achieving the orthoplex bound related to maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases. In this paper, we investigate the packing of subspaces instead of lines and determine the implications of maximality in this context. We leverage the existence of real or complex maximal mutually unbiased b…
We extend Beurling's invariant subspace theorem, by characterizing subspaces $K$ of the noncommutative $L^p$ spaces which are invariant with respect to Arveson's maximal subdiagonal algebras, sometimes known as noncommutative $H^\infty$. It is significant that a certain subspace, and a certain quotient, of $K$ are $L^p({\mathcal D})$-modules in the recent sense of Junge and Sherman, and therefore have a nice decomposition into cyclic submodules. We also give general inner-outer factorization formulae for elements in the noncommutative $L^p$. These facts generalize the classical ones, and shoul…
Let $\mathfrak A$ be a maximal subdiagonal algebra in a $σ$-finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$. If every right invariant subspace of $\mathfrak A$ in the non-commutative Hardy space $H^2$ is of Beurling type, then we say $\mathfrak A$ to be type 1. We determine generators of these algebras and consider a Riesz type factorization theorem for the non-commutative $H^1$ space. We show that the right analytic Toeplitz algebra on the non-commutative Hardy space $H^p$ associated with a type 1 subdiagonal algebra with multiplicity 1 is hereditary reflexive.
In the present paper we continue our investigations of the representation theoretic side of reflection positivity by studying positive definite functions ψon the additive group (R,+) satisfying a suitably defined KMS condition. These functions take values in the space Bil(V) of bilinear forms on a real vector space V. As in quantum statistical mechanics, the KMS condition is defined in terms of an analytic continuation of ψto the strip { z \in C\: 0 \leq Im z \leq b} with a coupling condition ψ(ib + t) = \oline{ψ(t)} on the boundary. Our first main result consists of a characterization of thes…
