Galaxies with stellar masses <10^7 Msun and specific star formation rates sSFR>10^{-7} yr^{-1} were examined on images of the Hubble Space Telescope Frontier Field Parallels for Abell 2744 and MACS J0416.1-02403. They appear as unresolved "Little Blue Dots" (LBDs). They are less massive and have higher sSFR than "blueberries" studied by yang et al. (2017) and higher sSFR than "Blue Nuggets" studied by Tacchella et al.(2016). We divided the LBDs into 3 redshift bins and, for each, stacked the B435, V606, and I814 images convolved to the same stellar point spread function (PSF). Their radii were determined from PSF deconvolution to be ~80 to ~180 pc. The high sSFR suggest that their entire stellar mass has formed in only 1% of the local age of the universe. The sSFRs at similar epochs in local dwarf galaxies are lower by a factor of ~100. Assuming that the star formation rate is epsilon_ff M_gas/t_ff for efficiency epsilon_ff, gas mass M_gas, and free fall time, t_ff, the gas mass and gas-to-star mass ratio are determined. This ratio exceeds 1 for reasonable efficiencies, and is likely to be ~5 even with a high epsilon_ff of 0.1. We consider whether these regions are forming today's globular clusters. With their observed stellar masses, the maximum likely cluster mass is ~10^5 M_sun, but if star formation continues at the current rate for ~10t_ff~50 Myr before feedback and gas exhaustion stop it, then the maximum cluster mass could become ~10^6 M_sun.
We present the first measurement of the globular cluster population surrounding the elliptical galaxy J07173724+3744224 (z=0.1546). This galaxy is located in the foreground in the field-of-view of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Frontier Fields observations of galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745 (z=0.5458). Based on deep HST ACS F435W, F606W, and F814W images, we find a total globular cluster population of N_tot = 3441 +/- 1416. Applying the appropriate extinction correction and filter transformation from ACS F814W to the Johnson V-band, we determine that the host galaxy has an absolute magnitud…
Recent observations of globular clusters (GCs) suggest that elemental abundance variations may exist between first-generation (1G) stars. We propose that metal abundance ('metallicity') spreads within GC forming giant molecular clouds (GMCs) can influence the iron abundances of future cluster members. To investigate this, we use original hydrodynamical simulations to model GMC formation in a high redshift dwarf galaxy. Our simulations self-consistently model physical processes such as stellar feedback, dust formation and destruction, and molecular gas formation on dust grains, making them well…
The formation of globular clusters (GC), with their multiple stellar generations, is still an unsolved puzzle. Thus, interest is rising on the possibility to detect their precursors at high redshift, hence directly witnessing their formation. A simple set of assumptions are empirically justified and then used to predict how many such precursors formed between redshift 3 and 10 could actually be detected by the NIRCam instrument on board of JWST. It is shown that the near power-law shape of the rest-frame UV continuum of young globular cluster precursors (GCP) implies that both colours and lumi…
The first JWST spectroscopy of the luminous galaxy GN-z11 simultaneously both established its redshift at $z=10.6$ and revealed a rest-ultraviolet spectrum dominated by signatures of highly-ionized nitrogen, which has so far defied clear interpretation. Here we present a reappraisal of this spectrum in the context of both detailed nebular modeling and nearby metal-poor reference galaxies. The N IV] emission enables the first nebular density measurement in a star-forming galaxy at $z>10$, and reveals evidence for extremely high densities $n_e\gtrsim 10^5$ $\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$. We definitively est…
We investigate the blue and optical rest-frame sizes (lambda~2300A-4000A) of three compact star-forming regions in a galaxy at z=4 strongly lensed (x30, x45, x100) by the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster A2744 using GLASS-ERS JWST/NIRISS imaging at 1.15um, 1.50mu and 2.0mu with PSF < 0.1". In particular, the Balmer break is probed in detail for all multiply-imaged sources of the system. With ages of a few tens of Myr, stellar masses in the range (0.7-4.0) x 10^6 Msun and optical/ultraviolet effective radii spanning the interval 3 < R_eff < 20 pc, such objects are currently the highest reds…
ABRIDGED) We revise the formation of Galactic GCs by adding the detailed chemical composition of their different stellar generations (from 1200 giants in 19 GCs) to their global parameters. We propose to identify as GCs those showing the Na-O anticorrelation, and we classify the GCs according to kinematics and location in the Galaxy in disk/bulge, inner, and outer halo. We find that the LF of GCs is fairly independent of their population, suggesting that it is imprinted by the formation mechanism, and only marginally affected by the ensuing evolution. We show that a large fraction of the primo…
A method is proposed for determining the properties of type Ia supernovae from short-lived precursors -- Prompt SNIa. This method is based on the assumption that this subtype of type Ia supernovae exploded into low-metallicity globular clusters (GCs), and is responsible for the enrichment of the high-metallicity subgroup of GCs and circumgalactic clouds (CGCs) with the iron peak elements. We justify that CGCs are the formation places of GCs of both subgroups. The accuracy of the method depends, first, on the number of GCs, the spectra of which have been studied in detail; second, on the number…
We present the reconstructed evolution of rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) luminosities of the most massive Milky Way dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxy, Fornax, and its five globular clusters (GCs) across redshift, based on analysis of the stellar fossil record and stellar population synthesis modeling. We find that (1) Fornax's (proto-)GCs can generate $10-100$ times more UV flux than the field population, despite comprising $<\sim 5\%$ of the stellar mass at the relevant redshifts; (2) due to their respective surface brightnesses, it is more likely that faint, compact sources in the Hubble Front…
We report on ALMA observations of D1, a system at z~6.15 with stellar mass M_* ~ 10^7 M_sun containing globular cluster (GC) precursors, strongly magnified by the galaxy cluster MACS J0416.1-2403. Since the discovery of GC progenitors at high redshift, ours is the first attempt to probe directly the physical properties of their neutral gas through infrared observations. A careful analysis of our dataset, performed with a suitable procedure designed to identify faint narrow lines and which can test various possible values for the unknown linewidth value, allowed us to identify a 4-sigma tentati…
We report the discovery of a large population of Ultra-diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) in the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2744 (z=0.308) as observed by the Hubble Frontier Fields program. Since this cluster is ~5 times more massive than Coma, our observations allow us to extend 0.7 dex beyond the high-mass end of the relationship between UDG abundance and cluster mass reported by van der Burg et al. 2016. Using the same selection criteria as van der Burg et al. 2016, A2744 hosts an estimated 2133 +/- 613 UDGs, ten times the number in Coma. As noted by Lee & Jang 2016, A2744 contains numerous unresolv…
The light of the merger remnant NGC 1316 is dominated by old and intermediate-age stars. The only sign of current star formation in this big galaxy is the HII region SH2, an isolated star cluster complex with a ring-like morphology and an estimated age of 0.1 Gyr at a galactocentric distance of about 35 kpc. A nearby intermediate-age globular cluster, surrounded by weak line emission and a few more young star clusters, is kinematically associated. The origin of this complex is enigmatic. The nebular emission lines permit a metallicity determination which can discriminate between a dwarf galaxy…
We report a photometric study of globular clusters (GCs), ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs), and dwarf galaxies in the giant merging galaxy cluster Abell 2744 at z = 0.308. Color-magnitude diagrams of the point sources derived from deep F814W (restframe r') and F105W (restframe I) images of Abell 2744 in the Hubble Space Telescope Frontier Field show a rich population of point sources whose colors are similar to those of typical GCs. These sources are as bright as -14.9 < M_r' < -11.4 (26.0 < F814W < 29.5) mag, being mostly UCDs and bright GCs in Abell 2744. The luminosity function (LF) of these sour…
We report on five compact, extremely young (<10Myr) and blue (β_UV<-2.5, F_λ=λ^β) objects observed with VLT/MUSE at redshift 3.1169, 3.235, in addition to three objects at z=6.145. These sources are magnified by the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy clusters MACS~J0416 and AS1063. Their de-lensed half light radii (Re) are between 16 to 140pc, the stellar masses are ~1-20 X 10^6 Msun, the magnitudes are m_uv=28.8 - 31.4 (-17<Muv<-15) and specific star formation rates can be as large as ~800Gyr^-1. Multiple images of these systems are widely separated in the sky (up to 50'') and individually magnifie…
A five year CCD photometric \emph{VI} time-series of NGC 7006 is employed to perform a detailed analysis of the known population of variable stars. In the process we have corrected inconsistent classifications, sky coordinates and found ten new cluster member variables. An independent reddening estimate with a value $E(B-V)=0.08\pm0.05$ is made. Using Fourier decompositions of RR Lyrae light curves and well established calibrations, the cluster mean metallicity and distance [Fe/H]$_{\rm ZW}= -1.53\pm0.15$ and $41.2\pm1.4$ kpc are estimated based on an extended sample of cluster member RRab sta…

Context: A census of faint and tiny star forming complexes at high redshift is key to improving our understanding of reionizing sources, galaxy growth and the formation of globular clusters. Aims: We present the MUSE Deep Lensed Field (MDLF) program. Methods: We describe Deep MUSE observations of 17.1 hours integration on a single pointing over the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416. Results: We confirm spectroscopic redshifts for all 136 multiple images of 48 source galaxies at 0.9<z<6.2. Within those galaxies, we securely identify 182 multiple images of 66 galaxy components that…
We compare the sizes and luminosities of faint $z=6$-8 galaxies magnified by the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) clusters with star-forming regions, as well as more evolved objects, in the nearby universe. Our high-redshift comparison sample includes 333 z=6-8 galaxies, for which size measurements were made as part of a companion study where lensing magnifications were estimated from various public models. Accurate size measurements for these sources are complicated by the lens model uncertainties, but other results and arguments suggest that faint galaxies are small, as discussed in a companion …

Discovery of Two Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies with Unusually Bright Globular Cluster Luminosity Functions via a Mark-Dependently Thinned Point Process (MATHPOP)
We compare the sizes and luminosities of 307 faint z=6-8 sources revealed by the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program with sources in the nearby universe. Making use of the latest lensing models and data from the first four HFF clusters with an extensive suite of public lens models, we measure both the sizes and luminosities for 153 z~6, 101 z~7, and 53 z~8 galaxies. The sizes range over more than a decade from ~500 to <50 pc. Extremely small sizes are inferred for many of our lowest luminosity sources, reaching individual sizes as small as 10-30 pc (the smallest is 11(-6)(+28) pc). The uncert…
We present magnitudes and profile fits for 180 galaxies in the central field of the massive lensing cluster Abell 1689 using very deep imaging with the ACS/HST in the F814W bandpass. Previous work revealed an exceptionally large number of globular clusters (GCs) in A1689 and mapped their number density distribution. We decompose this number density map into GCs associated with individual cluster galaxies and ICGCs (intracluster globular clusters) associated with the intracluster light (ICL). In all, we measure GC specific frequencies $S_N$ for 33 cluster members and the ICL. The relation betwe…
We study the physical properties (size, stellar mass, luminosity, star formation rate) and scaling relations for a sample of 166 star-forming clumps with redshift $z \sim 2-6.2$. They are magnified by the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416 and have robust lensing magnification ($2\lesssim μ\lesssim 82$) computed by using our high-precision lens model, based on 182 multiple images. Our sample extends by $\sim 3$ times the number of spectroscopically-confirmed lensed clumps at $z \gtrsim 2$. We identify clumps in ultraviolet continuum images and find that, whenever the effective spa…

The stellar initial mas function (IMF) has been described as being invariant, bottom heavy or top-heavy in extremely dense star burst conditions. To provide usable observable diagnostic we calculate redshift dependent spectral energy distributions of stellar populations in extreme star burst clusters which are likely to have been the precursors of present day massive globular clusters (GCs) and of ultra compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs). The retention fraction of stellar remnants is taken into account to asses the mass to light ratios of the ageing star-burst. Their redshift dependent photometric …
Within the early Universe, `extreme' star formation may have been the norm rather than the exception. Super Star Clusters (SSCs; $M_\star$ $\gtrsim$ 10$^5$ M$_\odot$) are thought to be the modern-day analogs of globular clusters, relics of a cosmic time ($z$ $\gtrsim$ 2) when the Universe was filled with vigorously star-forming systems. The giant HII region 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is often regarded as a benchmark for studies of extreme star formation. Here, we report the discovery of a massive embedded star forming complex spanning $\sim$ 500 pc in the unexplored southwe…
We present the clump populations detected in 18 lensed galaxies at redshifts 1 to 8.5 within the lensing cluster field SMACS0723. The recent JWST Early Release Observations of this poorly known region of the sky have revealed numerous point-like sources within and surrounding their host galaxies, undetected in the shallower HST images. We use JWST multiband photometry and the lensing model of this galaxy cluster to estimate the intrinsic sizes and magnitudes of the stellar clumps. We derive optical restframe effective radii from $<$10 to 100s pc and masses ranging from $\sim10^5$ to $10^9$ M$_…
The assembly process of our Galaxy can be retrieved using the motions and chemistry of individual stars. Chemo-dynamical studies of the nearby halo have long hinted at the presence of multiple components such as streams, clumps, duality and correlations between the stars' chemical abundances and orbital parameters. More recently, the analysis of two large stellar surveys have revealed the presence of a well-populated chemical elemental abundance sequence, of two distinct sequences in the colour-magnitude diagram, and of a prominent slightly retrograde kinematic structure all in the nearby halo…
Interacting galaxies surrounded by HI tidal debris are ideal sites for the study of young clusters and tidal galaxy formation. The process that triggers star formation in the low-density environments outside galaxies is still an open question. New clusters and galaxies of tidal origin are expected to have high metallicities for their luminosities. Spectroscopy of such objects is, however, at the limit of what can be done with existing 8-10m class telescopes, which has prevented statistical studies of these objects. NGC2865 is an UV-bright merging elliptical galaxy with shells and extended HI t…
The outer Galaxy is an environment with metallicity lower than the Solar one and, because of this, the formation and survival of molecules in star-forming regions located in the inner and outer Galaxy is expected to be different. To gain understanding on how chemistry changes throughout the Milky Way, it is crucial to observe outer Galaxy star-forming regions to constrain models adapted for lower metallicity environments. The project "chemical complexity in star-forming regions of the outer Galaxy" (CHEMOUT) aims to address this problem observing a sample of 35 high-mass star-forming cores at …
Globular clusters (GCs) are the ideal environment for the formation of neutron stars (NSs) and millisecond pulsars (MSPs). NSs origin and evolution provide a useful information on stellar dynamics and evolution in star clusters, and are among the most interesting astrophysical objects, being precursors of several high-energy phenomena such as gravitational waves and gamma-ray bursts. Due to a large velocity kick that they receive at birth, most of the NSs escape the local field, affecting the evolution and dynamics of their parent cluster. In this paper, we study the origin and dynamical evolu…
We report on a superdense star-forming region with an effective radius (R_e) smaller than 13 pc identified at z=6.143 and showing a star-formation rate density Σ_SFR~1000 Msun/yr/kpc2 (or conservatively >300 Msun/yr/kpc2). Such a dense region is detected with S/N>40 hosted by a dwarf extending over 440 pc, dubbed D1 (Vanzella et al. 2017b). D1 is magnified by a factor 17.4+/-5.0 behind the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416 and elongated tangentially by a factor 13.2+/-4.0 (including the systematic errors). The lens model accurately reproduces the positions of the confirmed multip…
We present very faint dropout galaxies at z~6-9 with a stellar mass M* down to M*~10^6Mo that are found in deep optical/near-infrared (NIR) images of the full data sets of the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program in conjunction with deep ground-based and Spitzer images and gravitational lensing magnification effects. We investigate stellar populations of the HFF dropout galaxies with the optical/NIR photometry and BEAGLE models made of self-consistent stellar population synthesis and photoionization models, carefully including strong nebular emission impacting on the photometry. We identify 35…
