The cognitive radio wireless sensor networks have become an integral part of communicating spectrum information to the fusion center, in a cooperative spectrum sensing environment. A group of battery operated sensors or nodes, sensing information about spectrum availability in the radio links, needs an energy efficient strategy to pass on the binary information. A proper routing method through intelligent decision making can be a good solution. In this paper, an energy efficient routing protocol has been introduced and a performance comparison is made with the existing system in terms of its energy consumption. The proposed routing technique considers both uniform and non-uniform clustering strategies and proves to be an energy efficient method of communication.

It is possible to further reduce the sampling rate requirement and improve reconstruction performance via algorithms considering prior knowledge of cognitive radio spectrum usages. In this paper, we group the usages of cognitive radio spectrum into three categories and propose a modified orthogonal m…

In this paper we apply the concept of overlay cognitive radio to the communication between nodes in a wireless mesh network. Based on the overlay cognitive radio model, it is possible to have two concurrent transmissions in a given interference region, where usually only one communication takes place at a given time. We analyze the cases of wireless mesh networks with regular and random topologies. Numerical results show that considerable network capacity gains can be achieved.
Spectrum sensing is an essential functionality that enables cognitive radios to detect spectral holes and opportunistically use under-utilized frequency bands without causing harmful interference to primary networks. Since individual cognitive radios might not be able to reliably detect weak primary signals due to channel fading/shadowing, this paper proposes a cooperative wideband spectrum sensing scheme, referred to as spatial-spectral joint detection, which is based on a linear combination of the local statistics from spatially distributed multiple cognitive radios. The cooperative sensing …
Wideband spectrum sensing is a critical component of a functioning cognitive radio system. Its major challenge is the too high sampling rate requirement. Compressive sensing (CS) promises to be able to deal with it. Nearly all the current CS based compressive wideband spectrum sensing methods exploit only the frequency sparsity to perform. Motivated by the achievement of a fast and robust detection of the wideband spectrum change, total variation mnimization is incorporated to exploit the temporal and frequency structure information to enhance the sparse level. As a sparser vector is obtained,…

The proposed strategy is efficient in improving the dynamic spectrum utilization and reducing interference to the primary users. The spectrum sensing pro…
In cognitive radio network the primary channel information is beneficial. But it can not be obtained by direct channel estimation in cognitive system as pervious methods. And only one possible way is the primary receiver broadcasts the primary channel information to the cognitive users, but it would require the modification of the primary receiver and additional precious spectrum resource. Cooperative communication is also a promising technique. And this paper introduces an indirect channel sensing method for the primary channel in cognitive amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network. As the signa…

In this paper, a two-hop decode-and-forward cognitive radio system with deployed interference alignment is considered. The relay node is energy-constrained and scavenges the energy from the interference signals. In the literature, there are two main energy harvesting protocols, namely, time-switching relaying and power-splitting relaying. We first demonstrate how to design the beamforming matrices for the considered primary and secondary networks. Then, the system capacity under perfect and imperfect channel state information scenarios, considering different portions of time-switching and powe…
In cognitive radio, spectrum sensing is a key component to detect spectrum holes (i.e., channels not used by any primary users). Collaborative spectrum sensing among the cognitive radio nodes is expected to improve the ability of checking complete spectrum usage states. Unfortunately, due to power limitation and channel fading, available channel sensing information is far from being sufficient to tell the unoccupied channels directly. Aiming at breaking this bottleneck, we apply recent matrix completion techniques to greatly reduce the sensing information needed. We formulate the collaborative…

An energy-constrained relay node harvests the energy from the interference signals through a power-splitting (PS) relaying protocol. Firstly, the beamforming matrices design for the primary and secondary networks is demonstrated. Then, a bit error rate (BER) performance of the system under perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) scenarios for PS protocol is calculated. Finally, the impact of the CSI mismatch parameters on the BER performance is simulated.

-In cognitive radio networks, spectrum sensing aims to detect the unused spectrum channels in order to use the radio spectrum more efficiently. Various methods have been proposed in the past, such as energy, feature detection, and matched filter. These methods are characterized by a sensing threshold, which plays an important role in the sensing performance. Most of the existing techniques used a static threshold. However, the noise is random, and, thus the threshold should be dynamic. In this paper, we suggest an approach with an estimated and dynamic sensing threshold to increase the efficie…
Spectrum sensing is a key problem in cognitive radio. However, traditional detectors become ineffective when noise uncertainty is severe. It is shown that the entropy of Gauss white noise is constant in the frequency domain, and a robust detector based on the entropy of spectrum amplitude was proposed. In this paper a novel detector is proposed based on the entropy of spectrum power density, and its performance is better than the previous scheme with less computational complexity. Furthermore, to improve the reliability of the detection, a two-stage entropy-based cooperative spectrum sensing s…

Furthermore, an l2 norm validation approach is proposed that enables cognitive radios (CRs) to automatically terminate the signal acquisition once the current spectral recovery is satisfactory, leading to enhanced CR throughput. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm can not only shorten the spectrum sensing interval, but also imp…
Cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access represent a new paradigm shift in more effective use of limited radio spectrum. One core component behind dynamic spectrum access is the sensing of primary user activity in the shared spectrum. Conventional distributed sensing and centralized decision framework involving multiple sensor nodes is proposed to enhance the sensing performance. However, it is difficult to apply the conventional schemes in reality since the overhead in sensing measurement and sensing reporting as well as in sensing report combining limit the number of sensor nodes that can…
In this paper, we investigate the joint spectrum sensing and resource allocation problem to maximize throughput capacity of an OFDM-based cognitive radio link with a cognitive relay. By applying a cognitive relay that uses decode and forward (D&F), we achieve more reliable communications, generating less interference (by needing less transmit power) and more diversity gain. In order to account for imperfections in spectrum sensing, the proposed schemes jointly modify energy detector thresholds and allocates transmit powers to all cognitive radio (CR) subcarriers, while simultaneously assigning…
Compressive Sensing has been utilized in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) to exploit the sparse nature of the occupation of the primary users. Also, distributed spectrum sensing has been proposed to tackle the wireless channel problems, like node or link failures, rather than the common (centralized approach) for spectrum sensing. In this paper, we propose a distributed spectrum sensing framework based on consensus algorithms where SU nodes exchange their binary decisions to take global decisions without a fusion center to coordinate the sensing process. Each SU will share its decision with its…
Cognitive radio that supports a secondary and opportunistic access to licensed spectrum shows great potential to dramatically improve spectrum utilization. Spectrum sensing performed by secondary users to detect unoccupied spectrum bands, is a key enabling technique for cognitive radio. This paper proposes a truncated sequential spectrum sensing scheme, namely the sequential shifted chi-square test (SSCT). The SSCT has a simple test statistic and does not rely on any deterministic knowledge about primary signals. As figures of merit, the exact false-alarm probability is derived, and the miss-d…
A cognitive radio system has the ability to observe and learn from the environment, adapt to the environmental conditions, and use the radio spectrum more efficiently. It allows secondary users (SUs) to use the primary users (PUs) channels when they are not being utilized. Cognitive radio involves three main processes: spectrum sensing, deciding, and acting. In the spectrum sensing process, the channel occupancy is measured with spectrum sensing techniques in order to detect unused channels. In the deciding process, sensing results are analyzed and decisions are made based on these results. In…

Too high sampling rate is the bottleneck to wideband spectrum sensing for cognitive radio in mobile communication. Compressed sensing (CS) is introduced to transfer the sampling burden. The standard sparse signal recovery of CS does not consider the distortion in the analogue-to-information converter (AIC). To mitigate performance degeneration casued by the mismatch in least square distortionless constraint which doesn't consider the AIC distortion, we define the sparse signal with the sampling distortion as a bounded additive noise, and An anti-sampling-distortion constraint (ASDC) is deduced…
Spectrum sensing is one of the enabling functionalities for cognitive radio (CR) systems to operate in the spectrum white space. In this paper, we present a spectrum sensing technique based on correlating spectra for detection of television (TV) broadcasting signals. The basic strategy is to correlate the periodogram of the received signal with the a priori known spectral features of the primary signal. We show that according to the Neyman-Pearson cr…
Cognitive radios (CR) are intelligent radio devices that can sense the radio environment and adapt to changes in the radio environment. Spectrum sensing and spectrum access are the two key CR functions. In this paper, we present a spectrum sensing error aware MAC protocol for a CR network collocated with multiple primary networks. We explicitly consider both types of sensing errors in the CR MAC design, since such errors are inevitable for practical spectrum sensors and more important, such errors could have significant impact on the performance of the CR MAC protocol. Two spectrum sensing pol…
In cognitive radio systems, employing sensing-based spectrum access strategies, secondary users are required to perform channel sensing in order to detect the activities of primary users. In realistic scenarios, channel sensing occurs with possible errors due to miss-detections and false alarms. As another challenge, time-varying fading conditions in the channel between the secondary transmitter and the secondary receiver have to be learned via channel estimation. In a cognitive radio system the failure of secondary user (SU) transceivers to promptly vacate the channel can introduce significant access-latency for primary or high-priority users (PU). In conventional cognitive radio systems, the backoff latency is exacerbated by frame structures that only allow sensing at periodic intervals. Concurrent transmission and sensing using self-interference suppression has been suggested to improve the performance of cognitive radio systems, allowing decisions to be taken at multiple points within the frame. In this paper, we extend this approach by proposing a …
A novel concept of Joint Source and Channel Sensing (JSCS) is introduced in the context of Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks (CRSN). Every sensor node has two basic tasks: application-oriented source sensing and ambient-oriented channel sensing. The former is to collect the application-specific source information and deliver it to the access point within some limit of distortion, while the latter is to find the vacant channels and provide spectrum access opportunities for the sensed source information. With in-depth exploration, we find that these two tasks are actually interrelated when taking …
Spectrum sensing is a fundamental component in cognitive radio. A major challenge in this area is the requirement of a high sampling rate in the sensing of a wideband signal. In this paper a wideband spectrum sensing model is presented that utilizes a sub-Nyquist sampling scheme to bring substantial savings in terms of the sampling rate. The correlation matrix of a finite number of noisy samples is computed and used by a subspace estimator to detect the occupied and vacant channels of the spectrum. In contrast with common methods, the proposedmethod does not need the knowledge of signal proper…
Spectrum sensing, which aims at detecting spectrum holes, is the precondition for the implementation of cognitive radio (CR). Collaborative spectrum sensing among the cognitive radio nodes is expected to improve the ability of checking complete spectrum usage. Due to hardware limitations, each cognitive radio node can only sense a relatively narrow band of radio spectrum. Consequently, the available channel sensing information is far from being sufficient for precisely recognizing the wide range of unoccupied channels. Aiming at breaking this bottleneck, we propose to apply matrix completion a…
We develop an efficient algorithm for cooperative spectrum sensing in a relay based cognitive radio network. We consider a stochastic model where data is sent from the Base Station (BS) of the Primary User (PU). The data is relayed by the Secondary Users (SU) to the SU BS. The SU BS has only partial CSI knowledge of the wireless channels. In order to obtain the optimal decision rule based on Likelihood Ratio Test (LRT), the marginal likelihood under each hypothesis needs to be evaluated pointwise. These, however, cannot be obtained analytically due to the intractability of the integrals. Inste…

This paper studies the symbol error rate performance of cognitive radio transmissions in the presence of imperfect sensing decisions. Two different transmission schemes, namely sensing-based spectrum sharing (SSS) and opportunistic spectrum access (OSA), are considered. In both schemes, secondary users first perform channel sensing, albeit with possible errors. In SSS, depending on the sensing decisions, they adapt the transmission power level and coexist with primary users in the channel. On the other hand, in OSA, secondary users are allowed to transmit only when the primary user activity is…
This paper deals with the challenging problem of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio. We present a novel approach to approximate the marginilisation of the frequency offset using a single point estimate. This is obtained via a low complexity Constrained Adaptive Notch Filter (CANF) to estimate the …
Various primary user (PU) radios have been allocated into fixed frequency bands in the whole spectrum. We summarize four occupancy features for the frequency bands. 1. The occupancy is sparse; 2. The frequency band allocation information is fixed and common; 3. There are three categories for the frequency band usages; 4. The occupied frequency bands are common in the CRN. For the first time, we consider all features as the prior knowledge in the compre…
As the scarce spectrum resource is becoming over-crowded, cognitive radios (CRs) indicate great flexibility to improve the spectrum efficiency by opportunistically accessing the authorized frequency bands. One of the critical challenges for operating such radios in a network is how to efficiently allocate transmission powers and frequency resource among the secondary users (SUs) while satisfying the quality-of-service (QoS) constraints of the primary users (PUs). In this paper, we focus on the non-cooperative power allocation problem in cognitive wireless mesh networks (CogMesh) formed by a nu…

Through deriving the probability of detection (Pd) and the probability of false alarm (Pf ) for independent and identical distribution (i.i.d.) SUs, we obtain lower total error rate (Qe) with proposed ED thresholds at low signal-to-noise-ratio…
In the Cognitive Compressive Sensing (CCS) problem, a Cognitive Receiver (CR) seeks to optimize the reward obtained by sensing an underlying $N$ dimensional random vector, by collecting at most $K$ arbitrary projections of it. The $N$ components of the latent vector represent sub-channels states, that change dynamically from "busy" to "idle" and vice versa, as a Markov chain that is biased towards producing sparse vectors. To identify the optimal strategy we formulate the Multi-Armed Bandit Compressive Sensing (MAB-CS) problem, generalizing the popular Cognitive Spectrum Sensing model, in whic…

In this paper, the problem of opportunistic channel sensing and access in cognitive radio networks when the sensing is imperfect and a secondary user has limited traffic to send at a time is investigated. Primary users' statistical information is assumed to be unknown, and therefore, a secondary user needs to learn the information online during channel sensing and access process, which means learning loss, also referred to as regret, is inevitable. In this research, the case when all potential channels can be sensed simultaneously is investigated first. The channel access process is modeled as…

This paper considers cooperative spectrum sensing in Cognitive Radios. In our previous work we have developed DualSPRT, a distributed algorithm for cooperative spectrum sensing using Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT) at the Cognitive Radios as well as at the fusion center. This algorithm works well, but is not optimal. In this paper we propose an improved algorithm- SPRT-CSPRT, which is motivated from Cumulative Sum Procedures (CUSUM). We analyse it theoretically. We also modify this algorithm to handle uncertainties in SNR's and fading.
Spectrum sensing is a fundamental component is a cognitive radio. In this paper, we propose new sensing methods based on the eigenvalues of the covariance matrix of signals received at the secondary users. In particular, two sensing algorithms are suggested, one is based on the ratio of the maximum eigenvalue to minimum eigenvalue; the other is based on the ratio of the average eigenvalue to minimum eigenvalue. Using some latest random matrix theories (RMT), we quantify the distributions of these ratios and derive the probabilities of false alarm and probabilities of detection for the proposed…
