We introduce an invariant of a finite point configuration $A \subset \mathbb{R}^{1+n}$ which we denote the cuspidal form of $A$. We use this invariant to extend Esterov's characterization of dual defective point configurations to exponential sums; the dual variety associated to $A$ has codimension at least $2$ if and only if $A$ does not contain any iterated circuit.
We prove the existence of defective secant varieties of three-factor and four-factor Segre-Veronese varieties embedded in certain multi-degree. These defective secant varieties were previously unknown and are of importance in the classification of defective secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties with three or more factors.
Here we investigate the birational geometry of projective varieties of arbitrary dimension having defective higher secant varieties. We apply the classical tool of tangential projections and we determine natural conditions for uniruledness, rational connectivity, and rationality.
In this paper we prove some general results on secant defective varieties. Then we focus on the 4--dimensional case and we give the full classification of secant defective 4--folds. This paper has been inspired by classical work by G. Scorza,
We compute the dimensions of all the secant varieties to the tangential varieties of all Segre-Veronese surfaces. We exploit the typical approach of computing the Hilbert function of special 0-dimensional schemes on projective plane by using a new degeneration technique.
A point $p\in\mathbb{P}^N$ of a projective space is $h$-identifiable, with respect to a variety $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$, if it can be written as linear combination of $h$ elements of $X$ in a unique way. Identifiability is implied by conditions on the contact locus in $X$ of general linear spaces called non weak defectiveness and non tangential weak defectiveness. We give conditions ensuring non tangential weak defectiveness of an irreducible and non-degenerated projective variety $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$, and we apply these results to Segre-Veronese varieties.
Going one step further in Zak's classification of Scorza varieties with secant defect equal to one, we characterize the Veronese embedding of $¶^n$ given by the complete linear system of quadrics and its smooth projections from a point as the only smooth irreducible complex and non-degenerate projective subvarieties of $¶^N$ that can be projected isomorphically into $¶^{2n}$ when $N\geq\binom{n+2}{2}-2$.
Let V_n be the Segre embedding of (P^1) x ... X (P^1) (n times). We prove that the higher secant varieties, σ_s(V_n), always have the expected dimension, except for σ_3(V_4), which is of dimension 1 less than expected.
Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ be smooth and irreducible and for $k \ge 0$ let $ν_k(X)$ (resp., $δ_k(X)$) be the $k$-th contact (resp., the $k$-th secant) defect of $X$. For all $k \ge 0$ we have the inequality $ν_k(X) \ge δ_k(X)$ and in the case $k=1$ we characterize projective varieties $X$ for which equality holds, $\dim \mathrm{Sing}(X) \le δ_1(X) -1$ and the generic tangential contact locus is reducible.
This paper studies the dimension of secant varieties to Segre varieties. The problem is cast both in the setting of tensor algebra and in the setting of algebraic geometry. An inductive procedure is built around the ideas of successive specializations of points and projections. This reduces the calculation of the dimension of the secant variety in a high dimensional case to a sequence of calculations of partial secant varieties in low dimensional cases. As applications of the technique: We give a complete classification of defective $t$-secant varieties to Segre varieties for t < 7. We general…

This paper deals with properties of the algebraic variety defined as the set of zeros of a "deficient" sequence of multivariate polynomials. We consider two types of varieties: ideal-theoretic complete intersections and absolutely irreducible varieties. For these types, we establish improved bounds on the dimension of the set of deficient systems of each type over an arbitrary field. On the other hand, we establish improved upper bounds on the number of systems of each type over a finite field.
An embedded manifold is dual defective if its dual variety is not a hypersurface. Using the geometry of the variety of lines through a general point, we characterize scrolls among dual defective manifolds. This leads to an optimal bound for the dual defect, which improves results due to Ein. Among other things we also provide a short and easy proof of the famous Landman Parity Theorem for dual defective manifolds based on our approach to the subject. We also discuss our conjecture that every dual defective manifold with cyclic Picard group should be secant defective, of a very special type, na…
We study some properties of an embedded variety covered by lines and give a numerical criterion ensuring the existence of a singular conic through two of its general points. We show that our criterion is sharp. Conic-connected, covered by lines, QEL, LQEL, prime Fano, defective, and dual defective varieties are closely related. We study some relations between the above mentioned classes of objects using celebrated results by Ein and Zak.
In this paper we study the higher secant varieties of Grassmann varieties in relation to Waring's problem for alternating tensors and to Alexander-Hirschowitz theorem. We show how to identify defective higher secant varieties of Grassmannians using a probabilistic method involving Terracini's Lemma, and we describe an algorithm which can compute, by numerical methods, dim(G(k,n)^{s}) for n<=14. Our main result is that, except for Grassmannians of lines, if n<=14 and k<=(n-1)/2 (if n=14 we have studied the case k<=5) there are only the four known defective cases: G(2,6)^{3}, G(3,7)^{3}, G(3,7)^…
In this note we consider multiples aD, where D is a divisor of the blow-up of P^n along points in general position which appears in the Alexander and Hirschowitz list of Veronese embeddings having defective secant varieties. In particular we show that there is such a D with h^1(X,D) > 0 and h^1(X,2D) = 0.
We continue the study, begun by the second author in math.AG/0701889, of secant defective manifolds having "simple entry loci". We prove that such manifolds are rational and describe them in terms of tangential projections. Using also our results in math.AG/0701885, their classification is reduced to the case of Fano manifolds of high index, whose Picard group is generated by the hyperplane section class. Conjecturally, the former should be linear sections of rational homogeneous manifolds. We also provide evidence that the classification of linearly normal dual defective manifolds with Picard…
We prove that all moment varieties of univariate Gaussian mixtures have the expected dimension. Our approach rests on intersection theory and Terracini's classification of defective surfaces. The analogous identifiability result is shown to be false for mixtures of Gaussians in dimension three and higher. Their moments up to third order define projective varieties that are defective. Our geometric study suggests an extension of the Alexander-Hirschowitz Theorem for Veronese varieties to the Gaussian setting.
Small codimensional embedded manifolds defined by equations of small degree are Fano and covered by lines. They are complete intersections exactly when the variety of lines through a general point is so and has the right codimension. This allows us to prove the Hartshorne Conjecture for manifolds defined by quadratic equations and to obtain the list of such Hartshorne manifolds. Using the geometry of the variety of lines through a general point, we characterize scrolls among dual defective manifolds. This leads to an optimal bound for the dual defect, which improves results due to Ein. We disc…
The main result of this paper is a structural theorem for projective Q-factorial toric varieties X in P^N, covered by lines. We prove that there exists a toric fibration f: X -> Z, locally trivial in the Zariski topology, with fiber a product of projective joins. All lines in X intersecting the open subset isomorphic to the torus, are contained in some fiber of f. This characterization has a geometrical application to dual defective toric varieties, and a combinatorial application to discriminants of lattice subsets. We prove that X has positive dual defect if and only if it has an elementary …
Let $X\subset \mathbb{P}^r$ be an integral and non-degenerate variety. Let $σ_{a,b}(X)\subseteq \mathbb{P}^r$, $(a,b)\in \mathbb{N}^2$, be the join of $a$ copies of $X$ and $b$ copies of the tangential variety of $X$. Using the classical Alexander-Hirschowitz theorem (case $b=0$) and a recent paper by H. Abo and N. Vannieuwenhoven (case $a=0$) we compute $\dim σ_{a,b}(X)$ in many cases when $X$ is the $d$-Veronese embedding of $\mathbb{P}^n$. This is related to certain additive decompositions of homogeneous polynomials. We give a general theorem proving that $\dim σ_{0,b}(X)$ is the expected o…
Let $X_{m,n}$ be the Segre-Veronese variety $\mathbb{P}^m \times \mathbb{P}^n$ embedded by the morphism given by $\mathcal{O}(1,2)$. In this paper, we provide two functions $\underline{s}(m,n)\le \bar{s}(m,n)$ such that the $s^{\mathrm{th}}$ secant variety of $X_{m,n}$ has the expected dimension if $s \leq \underline{s}(m,n)$ or $ \bar{s}(m,n) \leq s$. We also present a conjecturally complete list of defective secant varieties of such Segre-Veronese varieties.
In this paper we compute the dimension of all the higher secant varieties to the Segre-Veronese embedding of $\mathbb{P}^n\times \mathbb{P}^1$ via the section of the sheaf $\mathcal{O}(a,b)$ for any $n,a,b\in \mathbb{Z}^+$. We relate this result to the Grassmann Defectivity of Veronese varieties and we classify all the Grassmann $(1,s-1)$-defective Veronese varieties.
Let $SV^{\pmb n}_{\pmb d}$ be the Segre-Veronese given as the image of the embedding induced by the line bundle $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{n_1}\times\dots\times\mathbb{P}^{n_r}}(d_1,\dots, d_r)$. We prove that asymptotically $SV^{\pmb n}_{\pmb d}$ is not $h$-defective for $h\leq n_1^{\lfloor \log_2(d-1)\rfloor}$.
Let T be a torus over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0, and consider a projective T-module P(V). We determine when a projective toric subvariety X of P(V) is self-dual, in terms of the configuration of weights of V.
Let $X^{(n,m)}_{(1,d)}$ denote the Segre-Veronese embedding of $\mathbb{P}^n \times \mathbb{P}^m$ via the sections of the sheaf $\mathcal{O}(1,d)$. We study the dimensions of higher secant varieties of $X^{(n,m)}_{(1,d)}$ and we prove that there is no defective $s^{th}$ secant variety, except possibly for $n$ values of $s$. Moreover when ${m+d \choose d}$ is multiple of $(m+n+1)$, the $s^{th}$ secant variety of $X^{(n,m)}_{(1,d)}$ has the expected dimension for every $s$.
From a finite set in a lattice, we can define a toric variety embedded in a projective space. In this paper, we give a combinatorial description of the dual defect of the toric variety using the structure of the finite set as a Cayley sum with suitable conditions. We also interpret the description geometrically.
We prove that the generic element of the fifth secant variety $σ_5(Gr(\mathbb{P}^2,\mathbb{P}^9)) \subset \mathbb{P}(\bigwedge^3 \mathbb{C}^{10})$ of the Grassmannian of planes of $\mathbb{P}^9$ has exactly two decompositions as a sum of five projective classes of decomposable skew-symmetric tensors. {We show that this, {together with $Gr(\mathbb{P}^3, \mathbb{P}^8)$, is the only non-identifiable case} among the non-defective secant varieties $σ_s(Gr(\mathbb{P}^k, \mathbb{P}^n))$ for any $n<14$. In the same range for $n$, we classify all the weakly defective and all tangentially weakly defecti…
Let $λ=[d_1,\dots,d_r]$ be a partition of $d$. Consider the variety $\mathbb{X}_{2,λ} \subset \mathbb{P}^N$, $N={d+2 \choose 2}-1$, parameterizing forms $F\in k[x_0,x_1,x_2]_d$ which are the product of $r\geq 2$ forms $F_1,\dots,F_r$, with deg$F_i = d_i$. We study the secant line variety $σ_2(\mathbb{X}_{2,λ})$, and we determine, for all $r$ and $d$, whether or not such a secant variety is defective. Defectivity occurs in infinitely many "unbalanced" cases.

We show that certain categories of perverse sheaves on a pair of affine toric varieties defined by dual cones are Koszul dual in the sense of Beilinson, Ginzburg and Soergel. The functor expressing this duality is constructed explicitly using a combinatorial model for mixed sheaves on toric varieties.
A subvariety of a complex projective space has a well-known dual variety, which is the set of its tangent hyperplanes. The purpose of this paper is to generalise this notion for a subvariety of a quite general partial flag variety. A similar biduality theorem is proved, and the dual varieties of Schubert varieties are described.
We formulate and prove a generalization of Zariski-van Kampen theorem on the topological fundamental groups of smooth complex algebraic varieties. As an application, we prove a hyperplane section theorem of Lefschetz-Zariski-van Kampen type for the fundamental groups of the complements to the Grassmannian dual varieties.
Characteristic classes of Schubert varieties can be used to study the geometry and the combinatorics of homogeneous spaces. We prove a relation between elliptic classes of Schubert varieties on a generalized full flag variety and those on its Langlands dual. This new symmetry is only revealed if Schubert calculus is elevated from cohomology or K theory to the elliptic level.
For a pair of affine toric varieties X and Y defined by dual cones, we define an equivalence between two triangulated categories. The first is a mixed version of the equivariant derived category of X and the second is a mixed version of the derived category of sheaves on Y which are locally constant with unipotent monodromy on each orbit. This equivalence satisfies the Koszul duality formalism of Beilinson, Ginzburg, and Soergel. A similar duality was constructed in math.AG/0308216; this new approach is more canonical.
We prove that every simplicial complex is the dual complex of some simple normal crossing divisor in a smooth variety. As an application, we simplify and extend the results of Kapovich--Kollár (math.AG:1109.4047) on the existence of singularities with given dual complex.
We study the $A$-discriminant of toric varieties. We reduce its computation to the case of irreducible configurations and describe its behavior under specialization of some of the variables to zero. We prove a Gale dual characterization of dual defect toric varieties and deduce from it the classsification of such varieties in codimension less than or equal to four. This classification motivates a decomposition theorem which yields a sufficient condition for a toric variety to be dual defect. For codimension less than or equal to four, this condition is also necessary and we expect this to be t…
Abstract. In our previous paper arXiv:2210.16008, we show that any prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds $X$ with only $1/2(1,1,1)$-singularities in certain 5 classes can be embedded as linear sections into bigger dimensional $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties called key varieties, where each of the key varieties is constructed from certain data of the Sarkisov link staring from the blow-up at one $1/2(1,1,1)$-singularity of $X$. In this paper, we introduce varieties associated with the key varieties which are dual in a certain sense. As an application, we interpret a fundamental part of the Sarkisov link …
We study subsets of Grassmann varieties G(l,m) over a field F, such that these subsets are unions of Schubert cycles, with respect to a fixed flag. We study the linear spans of, and in case of positive characteristic, the number of points on such unions over finite fields. Moreover we study a geometric duality of such unions, and give a combinatorial interpretation of this duality. We discuss the maximum number of points over a finite field for the Schubert unions of a given spanning dimension, and we give some applications to coding theory. We define Schubert union codes, and study the parame…
For a given irreducible projective variety $X$, the closure of the set of all hyperplanes containing tangents to $X$ is the projectively dual variety $X^{\vee}$. We study the singular locus of projectively dual varieties of certain Segre-Plücker embeddings in series of papers. In this work we give a classification of the irreducible components of the singular locus of the dual Grassmannian. Basically, it admits two components: cusp type and node type which are degeneracies of a certain Hessian matrix, and the closure of the set of tangent planes having more than one critical point, respectivel…
We discover a class of projective self-dual algebraic varieties. Namely, we consider actions of isotropy groups of complex symmetric spaces on the projectivized nilpotent varieties of isotropy modules. For them, we classify all orbit closures $X$ such that $X=\check X$ where $\check X$ is the projective dual of $X$. We give algebraic criteria of projective self-duality for the considered orbit closures.
First, we consider a compact real-analytic irreducible subvariety $M$ in a sphere and its dual variety $M^\vee$. We explain that two matrices of the second fundamental forms for both varieties $M$ and $M^\vee$ can be regarded as the inverse matrices of each other. Also generalization in hyperbolic space is explained.
Let us say that a curve $C\subset\mathbb P^3$ is osculating self-dual if it is projectively equivalent to the curve in the dual space $(\mathbb P^3)^*$ whose points are osculating planes to~$C$. Similarly, we say that a $k$-dimensional subvariety $X\subset\mathbb P^{2k+1}$ is osculating self-dual if its second osculating space at the general point is a hyperplane and $X$ is projectively equivalent to the variety in $(\mathbb P^{2k+1})^*$ whose points are second osculating spaces to $X$. In this note we show that for each $k\ge 1$ there exist many osculating self-dual $k$-dimensional subvarieti…
Let $v_d(\mathbb{P}^2)\subset |\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^2}(d)|$ denote the $d$-uple Veronese surface. After studying some general aspects of the wall-crossing phenomena for stability conditions on surfaces, we are able to describe a sequence of flips of the secant varieties of $v_d(\mathbb{P}^2)$ by embedding the blow-up $\mbox{bl}_{v_d(\mathbb{P}^2)}|\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^2}(d)|$ into a suitable moduli space of Bridgeland semistable objects on $\mathbb{P}^2$.
Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is a fundamental computational problem in statistics. In this paper, MLE for statistical models with discrete data is studied from an algebraic statistics viewpoint. A reformulation of the MLE problem in terms of dual varieties and conormal varieties will be given. With this description, the dual likelihood equations and the dual MLE problem are defined. We show that solving the dual MLE problem yields solutions to the MLE problem, so we can solve the MLE problem without ever determining the defining equations of the model.
In a recent paper, Hauenstein, Sturmfels, and the second author discovered a conjectural bijection between critical points of the likelihood function on the complex variety of matrices of rank r and critical points on the complex variety of matrices of co-rank r-1. In this paper, we prove that conjecture for rectangular matrices and for symmetric matrices, as well as a variant for skew-symmetric matrices. To appear in International Mathematics Research Notices.
We extend Matsuki duality to arbitrary ind-varieties of maximal generalized flags, in other words, to any homogeneous ind-variety $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{B}$ for a classical ind-group $\mathbf{G}$ and a splitting Borel ind-subgroup $\mathbf{B}\subset\mathbf{G}$. As a first step, we present an explicit combinatorial version of Matsuki duality in the finite-dimensional case, involving an explicit parametrization of $K$- and $G^0$-orbits on $G/B$. After proving Matsuki duality in the infinite-dimensional case, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on a Borel ind-subgroup $\mathbf{B}\subset\math…
In a previous paper we showed that for every polarization on an abelian variety there is a dual polarization on the dual abelian variety. In this note we extend this notion of duality to families of polarized abelian varieties. As a main consequence we obtain an involution on the set of moduli spaces of polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$. In particular, the moduli spaces $\mathcal A_{(d_1,...,d_g)}$ and $\mathcal A_{(d_1,\frac{d_1d_g}{d_{g-1}},...,\frac{d_1d_g}{d_2},d_g)}$ are canonically isomorphic.
In this note we introduce higher order polar loci as natural generalizations of the classical polar loci, replacing the role of tangent spaces by that of higher order osculating spaces. The close connection between polar loci and dual varieties carries over to a connection between higher order polar loci and higher order dual varieties. We generalize the duality between the degrees of polar classes of a variety and those of its dual variety to varieties that are reflexive to a higher order. In particular, the degree of the top (highest codimension) polar class of order k is equal to the degree…
Semi-log canonical varieties are a higher-dimensional analogue of stable curves. They are the varieties appearing as the boundary $Δ$ of a log canonical pair $(X,Δ)$, and also appear as limits of canonically polarized varieties in moduli theory. For certain three-fold pairs $(X,Δ)$ we show how to compute the PL homeomorphism type of the dual complex of a dlt minimal model directly from the normalization data of $Δ$.
In this paper, we formulate and prove a duality for cohomology of curves over perfect fields of positive characteristic with coefficients in Neron models of abelian varieties. This is a global function field version of the author's previous work on local duality and Grothendieck's duality conjecture. It generalizes the perfectness of the Cassels-Tate pairing in the finite base field case. The proof uses the local duality mentioned above, Artin-Milne's global finite flat duality, the non-degeneracy of the height pairing and finiteness of crystalline cohomology. All these ingredients are organiz…
We observe that linear relations among Chern-Mather classes of projective varieties are preserved by projective duality. We deduce the existence of an explicit involution on a part of the Chow group of projective space, encoding the effect of duality on Chern-Mather classes. Applications include Plücker formulae, constraints on self-dual varieties, generalizations to singular varieties of classical formulas for the degree of the dual and the dual defect, formulas for the Euclidean distance degree, and computations of Chern-Mather classes and local Euler obstructions for cones.
