Spectral submanifolds (SSMs) have recently been shown to provide exact and unique reduced-order models for nonlinear unforced mechanical vibrations. Here we extend these results to periodically or quasiperiodically forced mechanical systems, obtaining analytic expressions for forced responses and backbone curves on modal (i.e. two-dimensional) time dependent SSMs. A judicious choice of the parameterization of these SSMs allows us to simplify the reduced dynamics considerably. We demonstrate our analytical formulae on three numerical examples and compare them to results obtained from available normal form methods.
We prove Lr-estimates on periodic solutions of periodically-forced, linearly-damped mechanical systems with polynomially-bounded potentials. The estimates are applied to obtain a non-existence result of periodic solutions in bounded domains, depending on an upper bound on the gradient of the potential. The results are illustrated on examples.
We show how spectral submanifold theory can be used to construct reduced-order models for harmonically excited mechanical systems with internal resonances. Efficient calculations of periodic and quasi-periodic responses with the reduced-order models are discussed in this paper and its companion, Part II, respectively. The dimension of a reduced-order model is determined by the number of modes involved in the internal resonance, independently of the dimension of the full system. The periodic responses of the full system are obtained as equilibria of the reduced-order model on spectral submanifo…
Frequency responses of multi-degree-of-freedom mechanical systems with weak forcing and damping can be studied as perturbations from their conservative limit. Specifically, recent results show how bifurcations near resonances can be predicted analytically from conservative families of periodic orbits (nonlinear normal modes). However, the stability of forced-damped motions is generally determined a posteriori via numerical simulations. In this paper, we present analytic results on the stability of periodic orbits that perturb from conservative nonlinear normal modes. In contrast with prior app…
We show how spectral submanifold theory can be used to provide analytic predictions for the response of periodically forced multi-degree-of-freedom mechanical systems. These predictions include an explicit criterion for the existence of isolated forced responses that will generally be missed by numerical continuation techniques. Our analytic predictions can be refined to arbitrary precision via an algorithm that does not require the numerical solutions of the mechanical system. We illustrate all these results on low- and high-dimensional nonlinear vibration problems. We find that our SSM-based…
In Part I of this paper, we have used spectral submanifold (SSM) theory to construct reduced-order models for harmonically excited mechanical systems with internal resonances. In that setting, extracting forced response curves formed by periodic orbits of the full system was reduced to locating the solution branches of equilibria of the corresponding reduced-order model. Here we use bifurcations of the equilibria of the reduced-order model to predict bifurcations of the periodic response of the full system. Specifically, we identify Hopf bifurcations of equilibria and limit cycles in reduced m…
Weakly damped mechanical systems under small periodic forcing tend to exhibit periodic response in a close vicinity of certain periodic orbits of their conservative limit. Specifically, amplitude frequency plots for the conservative limit have often been noted, both numerically and experimentally, to serve as backbone curves for the near resonance peaks of the forced response. In other cases, such a relationship between the unforced and forced response was not observed. Here we provide a systematic mathematical analysis that predicts which members of conservative periodic orbit families will s…
Escape from a potential well is an extreme example of transient behavior. We consider the escape of the harmonically forced particle under viscous damping from the benchmark truncated weakly nonlinear potential well. Main attention is paid to most interesting case of primary 1:1 resonance. The treatment is based on multiple-scales analysis and exploration of the slow-flow dynamics. Contrary to Hamiltonian case described in earlier works, in the case with damping the slow-flow equations are not integrable. However, if the damping is small enough, it is possible to analyze the perturbed slow-flo…
We show how spectral submanifold (SSM) theory can be used to extract forced-response curves, including isolas, without any numerical simulation in high-degree-of-freedom, periodically forced mechanical systems. We use multivariate recurrence relations to construct the SSMs, achieving a major speed-up relative to earlier autonomous SSM algorithms. The increase in computational efficiency promises to close the current gap between studying lower-dimensional academic examples and analyzing larger systems obtained from finite-element modeling, as we illustrate on a discretization of a damped-forced…
In recent papers by the authors (S.~Motonaga and K.~Yagasaki, Obstructions to integrability of nearly integrable dynamical systems near regular level sets, submitted for publication, and K.~Yagasaki, Nonintegrability of nearly integrable dynamical systems near resonant periodic orbits, submitted for publication), two different techniques which allow us to prove the real-analytic or complex-meromorphic nonintegrability of forced nonlinear oscillators having the form of time-periodic perturbations of single-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems were provided. Here the concept of nonintegrability…
Dynamical systems are often subject to algebraic constraints in conjunction to their governing ordinary differential equations. In particular, multibody systems are commonly subject to configuration constraints that define kinematic compatibility between the motion of different bodies. A full-scale numerical simulation of such constrained problems is challenging, making reduced-order models (ROMs) of paramount importance. In this work, we show how to use spectral submanifolds (SSMs) to construct rigorous ROMs for mechanical systems with configuration constraints. These SSM-based ROMs enable th…
Model reduction of large nonlinear systems often involves the projection of the governing equations onto linear subspaces spanned by carefully-selected modes. The criteria to select the modes relevant for reduction are usually problem-specific and heuristic. In this work, we propose a rigorous mode-selection criterion based on the recent theory of Spectral Submanifolds (SSM), which facilitates a reliable projection of the governing nonlinear equations onto modal subspaces. SSMs are exact invariant manifolds in the phase space that act as nonlinear continuations of linear normal modes. Our crit…
For general nonlinear mechanical systems, we derive closed-form, reduced-order models up to cubic order based on rigorous invariant manifold results. For conservative systems, the reduction is based on Lyapunov Subcenter Manifold (LSM) theory, whereas for damped-forced systems, we use Spectral Submanifold (SSM) theory. To evaluate our explicit formulas for the reduced model, no coordinate changes are required beyond an initial linear one. The reduced-order models we derive are simple and depend only on physical and modal parameters, allowing us to extract fundamental characteristics, such as b…
Invariant manifolds are important constructs for the quantitative and qualitative understanding of nonlinear phenomena in dynamical systems. In nonlinear damped mechanical systems, for instance, spectral submanifolds have emerged as useful tools for the computation of forced response curves, backbone curves, detached resonance curves (isolas) via exact reduced-order models. For conservative nonlinear mechanical systems, Lyapunov subcenter manifolds and their reduced dynamics provide a way to identify nonlinear amplitude-frequency relationships in the form of conservative backbone curves.
