Model reduction of large nonlinear systems often involves the projection of the governing equations onto linear subspaces spanned by carefully-selected modes. The criteria to select the modes relevant for reduction are usually problem-specific and heuristic. In this work, we propose a rigorous mode-selection criterion based on the recent theory of Spectral Submanifolds (SSM), which facilitates a reliable projection of the governing nonlinear equations onto modal subspaces. SSMs are exact invariant manifolds in the phase space that act as nonlinear continuations of linear normal modes. Our criterion identifies critical linear normal modes whose associated SSMs have locally the largest curvature. These modes should then be included in any projection-based model reduction as they are the most sensitive to nonlinearities. To make this mode selection automatic, we develop explicit formulas for the scalar curvature of an SSM and provide an open-source numerical implementation of our mode-selection procedure. We illustrate the power of this procedure by accurately reproducing the forced-response curves on three examples of varying complexity, including high-dimensional finite element models.
Dynamical systems are often subject to algebraic constraints in conjunction to their governing ordinary differential equations. In particular, multibody systems are commonly subject to configuration constraints that define kinematic compatibility between the motion of different bodies. A full-scale numerical simulation of such constrained problems is challenging, making reduced-order models (ROMs) of paramount importance. In this work, we show how to use spectral submanifolds (SSMs) to construct rigorous ROMs for mechanical systems with configuration constraints. These SSM-based ROMs enable th…
Delay embedding is a commonly employed technique in a wide range of data-driven model reduction methods for dynamical systems, including the Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), the Hankel alternative view of the Koopman decomposition (HAVOK), nearest-neighbor predictions and the reduction to spectral submanifolds (SSMs). In developing these applications, multiple authors have observed that delay embedding appears to separate the data into modes, whose orientations depend only on the spectrum of the sampled system. In this work, we make this observation precise by proving that the eigenvectors of…

While data-driven model reduction techniques are well-established for linearizable mechanical systems, general approaches to reducing non-linearizable systems with multiple coexisting steady states have been unavailable. In this paper, we review such a data-driven nonlinear model reduction methodology based on spectral submanifolds (SSMs). As input, this approach takes observations of unforced nonlinear oscillations to construct normal forms of the dynamics reduced to very low dimensional invariant manifolds. These normal forms capture amplitude-dependent properties and are accurate enough to …
We present a fast method for nonlinear data-driven model reduction of dynamical systems onto their slowest nonresonant spectral submanifolds (SSMs). We use observed data to locate a low-dimensional, attracting slow SSM and compute a maximally sparse approximation to the reduced dynamics on it. The recently released SSMLearn algorithm uses implicit optimization to fit a spectral submanifold to data and reduce the dynamics to the normal form. Here, we present two simplified algorithms, which reformulate manifold fitting and normal form computation as explicit problems under certain assumptions. …

We develop a methodology to construct low-dimensional predictive models from data sets representing essentially nonlinear (or non-linearizable) dynamical systems with a hyperbolic linear part that are subject to external forcing with finitely many frequencies. Our data-driven, sparse, nonlinear models are obtained as extended normal forms of the reduced dynamics on low-dimensional, attracting spectral submanifolds (SSMs) of the dynamical system. We illustrate the power of data-driven SSM reduction on high-dimensional numerical data sets and experimental measurements involving beam oscillations…
We show how spectral submanifold theory can be used to construct reduced-order models for harmonically excited mechanical systems with internal resonances. Efficient calculations of periodic and quasi-periodic responses with the reduced-order models are discussed in this paper and its companion, Part II, respectively. The dimension of a reduced-order model is determined by the number of modes involved in the internal resonance, independently of the dimension of the full system. The periodic responses of the full system are obtained as equilibria of the reduced-order model on spectral submanifo…
We show how spectral submanifold (SSM) theory can be used to extract forced-response curves, including isolas, without any numerical simulation in high-degree-of-freedom, periodically forced mechanical systems. We use multivariate recurrence relations to construct the SSMs, achieving a major speed-up relative to earlier autonomous SSM algorithms. The increase in computational efficiency promises to close the current gap between studying lower-dimensional academic examples and analyzing larger systems obtained from finite-element modeling, as we illustrate on a discretization of a damped-forced…

For general nonlinear mechanical systems, we derive closed-form, reduced-order models up to cubic order based on rigorous invariant manifold results. For conservative systems, the reduction is based on Lyapunov Subcenter Manifold (LSM) theory, whereas for damped-forced systems, we use Spectral Submanifold (SSM) theory. To evaluate our explicit formulas for the reduced model, no coordinate changes are required beyond an initial linear one. The reduced-order models we derive are simple and depend only on physical and modal parameters, allowing us to extract fundamental characteristics, such as b…
