Binary constant-weight codes have been extensively studied, due to both their numerous applications and to their theoretical significance. In particular, constant-weight codes have been proposed for error correction in store and forward. In this paper, we introduce constant-weight array codes (CWACs), which offer a tradeoff between the rate gain of general constant-weight codes and the low decoding complexity of liftings. CWACs can either be used in the on-shot setting introduced earlier or in a multi-shot approach, where one codeword consists of several messages. The multi-shot approach generalizes the one-shot approach and hence allows for higher rate gains. We first give a construction of CWACs based on concatenation, which generalizes the traditional erasure codes, and also provide a decoding algorithm for these codes. Since CWACs can be viewed as a generalization of both binary constant-weight codes and nonrestricted Hamming metric codes, CWACs thus provide an additional degree of freedom to both problems of determining the maximum cardinality of constant-weight codes and nonrestricted Hamming metric codes. We then investigate their theoretical significance. We first generalize many classical bounds derived for Hamming metric codes or constant-weight codes in the CWAC framework. We finally relate the maximum cardinality of a CWAC to that of a constant-weight code, of a nonrestricted Hamming metric code, and of a spherical code.
In millimeter-wave communications (MMWC), in order to compensate for high propagation attenuation, phased arrays are favored to achieve array gain by beamforming, where transmitting and receiving antenna arrays need to be jointly trained to obtain appropriate antenna weight vectors (AWVs). Since the amplitude of each element of the AWV is usually constraint constant to simplify the design of phased arrays in MMWC, the existing singular vector based beamforming training scheme cannot be used for such devices. Thus, in this letter, a steering vector based iterative beamforming training scheme, w…
In this work, we study two types of constraints on two-dimensional binary arrays. In particular, given $p,ε>0$, we study (i) The $p$-bounded constraint: a binary vector of size $m$ is said to be $p$-bounded if its weight is at most $pm$, and (ii) The $ε$-balanced constraint: a binary vector of size $m$ is said to be $ε$-balanced if its weight is within $[(0.5-ε)*m,(0.5+ε)*m]$. Such constraints are crucial in several data storage systems, those regard the information data as two-dimensional (2D) instead of one-dimensional (1D), such as the crossbar resistive memory arrays and the holographic da…
We consider downlink cellular multi-user communication between a base station (BS) having N antennas and M single-antenna users, i.e., an N X M Gaussian Broadcast Channel (GBC). Under an average only total transmit power constraint (APC), large antenna arrays at the BS (having tens to a few hundred antennas) have been recently shown to achieve remarkable multi-user interference (MUI) suppression with simple precoding techniques. However, building large arrays in practice, would require cheap/power-efficient Radio-Frequency(RF) electronic components. The type of transmitted signal that facilita…
Binary constant weight codes have important applications and have been studied for many years. Optimal or near-optimal binary constant weight codes of small lengths have been determined. In this paper we propose a new construction of explicit binary constant weight codes from $q$-ary Reed-Solomon codes. Some of our binary constant weight codes are optimal or new. In particular new binary constant weight codes $A(64, 10, 8) \geq 4108$ and $A(64, 12, 8) \geq 522$ are constructed. We also give explicitly constructed binary constant weight codes which improve Gilbert and Graham-Sloane lower bounds…
We present a framework for minimizing costs in constant weight codes while maintaining a certain amount of differentiable codewords. Our calculations are based on a combinatorial view of constant weight codes and relay on simple approximations.
In this work we develop a geometric approach to the study of rank metric codes. Using this method, we introduce a simpler definition for generalized rank weight of linear codes. We give a complete classification of constant rank weight code and we give their generalized rank weights.
A new construction for constant weight codes is presented. The codes are constructed from $k$-dimensional subspaces of the vector space $\F_q^n$. These subspaces form a constant dimension code in the Grassmannian space $\cG_q(n,k)$. Some of the constructed codes are optimal constant weight codes with parameters not known before. An efficient algorithm for error-correction is given for the constructed codes. If the constant dimension code has an efficient encoding and decoding algorithms then also the constructed constant weight code has an efficient encoding and decoding algorithms.
We present an encoding and decoding scheme for constant weight sequences, that is, given an information sequence, the construction results in a sequence of specific weight within a certain range. The scheme uses a prefix design that is based on Gray codes. Furthermore, by adding redundant symbols we extend the range of weight values for output sequences, which is useful for some applications.
The expicit restricted isometry property (RIP) measurement matrices are needed in practical application of compressed sensing in signal processing. RIP matrices from Reed-Solomon codes, BCH codes, orthogonal codes, expander graphs have been proposed and analysised. On the other hand binary constant weight codes have been studied for many years and many optimal or near-optimal small weight and ditance constant weight codes have been determined. In this paper we propose a new deterministic construction of RIP measurement matrices in compressed sensing from binary and ternary contant weight codes…
We give a method of constructing a cover-free $(s, \ell)$-code. For $k > s$, our construction yields a $ {{n \choose s} \choose \ell}\times {n \choose k}$ cover-free $(s, \ell)$-code with a constant column weight.
Constant-weight and constant-charge binary sequences with constrained run length of zeros are introduced. For these sequences, the weight and the charge distribution are found. Then, recurrent and direct formulas for calculating the number of these sequences are obtained. With considering these numbers of constant-weight and constant-charge RLL sequences as coefficients of convergent power series, generating functions are derived. The fact, that generating function for enumerating constant-charge RLL sequences does not have a closed form, is proved. Implementation of encoding and decoding proc…
Motivated by the duplication-correcting problem for data storage in live DNA, we study the construction of constant-weight codes in $\ell_1$-metric. By using packings and group divisible designs in combinatorial design theory, we give constructions of optimal codes over non-negative integers and optimal ternary codes with $\ell_1$-weight $w\leq 4$ for all possible distances. In general, we derive the size of the largest ternary code with constant weight $w$ and distance $2w-2$ for sufficiently large length $n$ satisfying $n\equiv 1,w,-w+2,-2w+3\pmod{w(w-1)}$.
In this work, new construction methods for self-dual codes are given. The methods use the short Kharaghani array and a variation of it. These are applicable to any commutative Frobenius ring. We apply the constructions over the ring F_2 + uF_2 and self-dual Type I [64, 32, 12]_2-codes with various weight enumerators obtained as Gray images. By the use of an extension theorem for self-dual codes we were able to construct 27 new extremal binary self-dual codes of length 68. The existence of the extremal binary self-dual codes with these weight enumerators was previously unknown.
We introduce the class of multiply constant-weight codes to improve the reliability of certain physically unclonable function (PUF) response. We extend classical coding methods to construct multiply constant-weight codes from known $q$-ary and constant-weight codes. Analogues of Johnson bounds are derived and are shown to be asymptotically tight to a constant factor under certain conditions. We also examine the rates of the multiply constant-weight codes and interestingly, demonstrate that these rates are the same as those of constant-weight codes of suitable parameters. Asymptotic analysis of…
A classic result of Delsarte connects the strength (as orthogonal array) of a linear code with the minimum weight of its dual: the former is one less than the latter. We show that Delsarte's observation extends to codes over arbitrary finite rings. Since the paper of Hammons \emph{et al.}, there is a lot of interest in codes over rings, especially in codes over $Z_4$ and their (usually non-linear) binary Gray map images. We show that Delsarte's observation extends to codes over arbitrary finite commutative rings with identity. Also, we show that the strength of the Gray map image of a $Z_4$ co…
From cosets of binary Hamming codes we construct diameter perfect constant-weight ternary codes with weight $n-1$ (where $n$ is the code length) and distances 3 and 5. The class of distance 5 codes has parameters unknown before. Keywords: constant-weight codes, ternary codes, perfect codes, diameter perfect codes, perfect matchings, Preparata codes
An optimal constant-composition or constant-weight code of weight $w$ has linear size if and only if its distance $d$ is at least $2w-1$. When $d\geq 2w$, the determination of the exact size of such a constant-composition or constant-weight code is trivial, but the case of $d=2w-1$ has been solved previously only for binary and ternary constant-composition and constant-weight codes, and for some sporadic instances. This paper provides a construction for quasicyclic optimal constant-composition and constant-weight codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ based on a new generalization of differen…
The sizes of optimal constant-composition codes of weight three have been determined by Chee, Ge and Ling with four cases in doubt. Group divisible codes played an important role in their constructions. In this paper, we study the problem of constructing optimal quaternary constant-composition codes with Hamming weight four and minimum distances five or six through group divisible codes and Room square approaches. The problem is solved leaving only five lengths undetermined. Previously, the results on the sizes of such quaternary constant-composition codes were scarce.
The sizes of optimal constant-composition codes of weight three have been determined by Chee, Ge and Ling with four cases in doubt. Group divisible codes played an important role in their constructions. In this paper, we study the problem of constructing optimal ternary constant-composition codes with Hamming weight four and minimum distance six. The problem is solved with a small number of lengths undetermined. The previously known results are those with code length no greater than 10.
Multiply constant-weight codes (MCWCs) have been recently studied to improve the reliability of certain physically unclonable function response. In this paper, we give combinatorial constructions for MCWCs which yield several new infinite families of optimal MCWCs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the Johnson type upper bounds of MCWCs are asymptotically tight for fixed weights and distances. Finally, we provide bounds and constructions of two dimensional MCWCs.

Motivated by applications in polymer-based data storage we introduced the new problem of characterizing the code rate and designing constant-weight binary $B_2$-sequences. Binary $B_2$-sequences are collections of binary strings of length $n$ with the property that the real-valued sums of all distinct pairs of strings are distinct. In addition to this defining property, constant-weight binary $B_2$-sequences also satisfy the constraint that each string has a fixed, relatively small weight $ω$ that scales linearly with $n$. The constant-weight constraint ensures low-cost synthesis and uniform p…
We consider two families of weighted zero-sum constants for finite abelian groups. For a finite abelian group $( G , + )$, a set of weights $W \subset \mathbb{Z}$, and an integral parameter $m$, the $m$-wise Davenport constant with weights $W$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that each sequence over $G$ of length $n$ has at least $m$ disjoint zero-subsums with weights $W$. And, for an integral parameter $d$, the $d$-constrained Davenport constant with weights $W$ is the smallest $n$ such that each sequence over $G$ of length $n$ has a zero-subsum with weights $W$ of size at most $d$. First, we…
