We define a new statistic on any Weyl group which we call the odd length and which reduces, for Weyl groups of types $A$, $B$, and $D$, the the statistics by the same name that have already been defined and studied in [10], [13], [14], and [3]. We show that the signed (by length) generating function of the odd length always factors nicely except possibly in type $E_8$, and we obtain multivariate analogues of these factorizations in types $B$ and $D$.
We define and study odd and even analogues of the major index statistics for the classical Weyl groups. More precisely, we show that the generating functions of these statistics, twisted by the one-dimensional characters of the corresponding groups, always factor in an explicit way. In particular, we obtain odd and even analogues of Carlitz's identity, of the Gessel-Simion Theorem, and a parabolic extension, and refinement, of a result of Wachs.
We define and study odd analogues of classical geometric and combinatorial objects associated to permutations, namely odd Schubert varieties, odd diagrams, and odd inversion sets. We show that there is a bijection between odd inversion sets of permutations and acyclic orientations of the Turán graph, that the dimension of the odd Schubert variety associated to a permutation is the odd length of the permutation, and give several necessary conditions for a subset of $[n] \times [n]$ to be the odd diagram of a permutation. We also study the sign-twisted generating function of the odd length over …
The number of Bruhat intervals in Coxeter groups is finite, and for the first few lengths, the intervals were described up to an isomorphism by A. Hultman using the correspondence between Bruhat intervals and cell decompositions of a 2d sphere and straightforward computations. The main purpose of this paper consists of a description of the intervals in higher dimensions, as the Hultman's geometric method is hard to apply due to rapidly growing with length number of nonisomorphic intervals. We construct an invariant on subintervals in the Bruhat graphs, using their specific properties. This giv…
We show that the complete symmetric digraph $K_{2m}^\ast$ admits a resolvable decomposition into directed cycles of length $m$ for all odd $m$, $5 \le m \le 49$. Consequently, $K_{n}^\ast$ admits a resolvable decomposition into directed cycles of length $m$ for all $n \equiv 0 \pmod{2m}$ and odd $m$, $5 \le m \le 49$.
In this paper, we construct almost resolvable cycle systems of order $4k+1$ for odd $k\ge 11$. This completes the proof of the existence of almost resolvable cycle systems with odd cycle length.
We define a new statistic on the even hyperoctahedral groups which is a natural analogue of the odd length statistic recently defined and studied on Coxeter groups of types $A$ and $B$. We compute the signed (by length) generating function of this statistic over the whole group and over its maximal and some other quotients and show that it always factors nicely. We also present some conjectures.
It is proved that there exists an absolute constant c > 0 such that for every natural number k, every non-bipartite 2-connected graph with average degree at least ck contains k cycles with consecutive odd lengths. This implies the existence of the absolute constant d > 0 that every non-bipartite 2-connected graph with minimum degree at least dk contains cycles of all lengths modulo k, thus providing an answer (in a strong form) to a question of Thomassen. Both results are sharp up to the constant factors.
In this work, we study the concept of the length function and some of its combinatorial properties for the class of extended affine root systems of type $A_1$. We introduce a notion of root basis for these root systems, and using a unique expression of the elements of the Weyl group with respect to a set of generators for the Weyl group, we calculate the length function with respect to a very specific root basis.
It is conjectured that for every pair $(\ell,m)$ of odd integers greater than 2 with $m \equiv 1\; \pmod{\ell}$, there exists a cyclic two-factorization of $K_{\ell m}$ having exactly $(m-1)/2$ factors of type $\ell^m$ and all the others of type $m^{\ell}$. The authors prove the conjecture in the affirmative when $\ell \equiv 1\; \pmod{4}$ and $m \geq \ell^2 -\ell + 1$.
In this paper we determine the chromatic number of graphs with two odd cycle lengths. Let $G$ be a graph and $L(G)$ be the set of all odd cycle lengths of $G$. We prove that: (1) If $L(G)=\{3,3+2l\}$, where $l\geq 2$, then $χ(G)=\max\{3,ω(G)\}$; (2) If $L(G)=\{k,k+2l\}$, where $k\geq 5$ and $l\geq 1$, then $χ(G)=3$. These, together with the case $L(G)=\{3,5\}$ solved in \cite{W}, give a complete solution to the general problem addressed in \cite{W,CS,KRS}. Our results also improve a classical theorem of Gyárfás which asserts that $χ(G)\le 2|L(G)|+2$ for any graph $G$.
In this note, we identify a natural class of subsets of affine Weyl groups whose Poincare series are rational functions. This class includes the sets of minimal coset representatives of reflection subgroups. As an application, we construct a generalization of the classical length-descent generating function, and prove its rationality.
We prove that for each odd integer $k \geq 7$, every graph on $n$ vertices without odd cycles of length less than $k$ contains at most $(n/k)^k$ cycles of length $k$. This generalizes the previous results on the maximum number of pentagons in triangle-free graphs, conjectured by Erdős in 1984, and asymptotically determines the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,C_k,C_{k-2})$ for odd $k$. In contrary to the previous results on the pentagon case, our proof is not computer-assisted.
The dichromatic number of a digraph $D$ is the minimum number of colors of a vertex coloring of $D$ such that $D$ has no monochromatic cycles. The Hajós join were recently extended to digraphs (using the dichromatic number) by J. Bang-Jensen et. al. and Hajós (directed) operations is a tool to obtain r-(di)chromatic (di)graphs. J. Bang-Jensen et. al. posed in 2020 the problem of how to obtain the symmetric cycle of length 5 from symmetric cycles of length 3. We recently solved this problem by applying a genetic algorithm. In this article, a procedure is presented to construct any odd symmetric…
An odd hole in a graph is a induced cycle with odd length greater than 3. In an earlier paper (with Sophie Spirkl), solving a longstanding open problem, we gave a polynomial-time algorithm to test if a graph has an odd hole. We subsequently showed that, for every t, there is a polynomial time algorithm to test whether a graph contains an odd hole of length at least t. In this paper, we give an algorithm that finds a shortest odd hole, if one exists.
We give a new semi-combinatorial proof for the equality of the number of ballot permutations of length $n$ and the number of odd order permutations of length $n$, which is due to Bernardi, Duplantier and Nadeau. Spiro conjectures that the descent number of ballot permutations and certain cyclic weight of odd order permutations of the same length are equi-distributed. We present a bijection to establish a Toeplitz property for ballot permutations with any fixed number of descents, and a Toeplitz property for odd order permutations with any fixed cyclic weight. This allows us to refine Spiro's c…
Resolving a conjecture of Bollobás and Erdős, Gyárfás proved that every graph $G$ of chromatic number $k+1\geq 3$ contains cycles of $\lfloor\frac{k}{2}\rfloor$ distinct odd lengths. We strengthen this prominent result by showing that such $G$ contains cycles of $\lfloor\frac{k}{2}\rfloor$ consecutive odd lengths. Along the way, combining extremal and structural tools, we prove a stronger statement that every graph of chromatic number $k+1\geq 7$ contains $k$ cycles of consecutive lengths, except that some block is $K_{k+1}$. As corollaries, this confirms a conjecture of Verstraëte and answers…
For each odd $m \geq 3$ we completely solve the problem of when an $m$-cycle system of order $u$ can be embedded in an $m$-cycle system of order $v$, barring a finite number of possible exceptions. In cases where $u$ is large compared to $m$, where $m$ is a prime power, or where $m \leq 15$, the problem is completely resolved. In other cases, the only possible exceptions occur when $v-u$ is small compared to $m$. This result is proved as a consequence of a more general result which gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an $m$-cycle decomposition of a complete graph of …
We introduce abacus diagrams that describe minimal length coset representatives in affine Weyl groups of types B, C, and D. These abacus diagrams use a realization of the affine Weyl group of type C due to Eriksson to generalize a construction of James for the symmetric group. We also describe several combinatorial models for these parabolic quotients that generalize classical results in affine type A related to core partitions.
A hole is an induced cycle of length at least 4. A graph is called a pentagraph if it has no cycles of length 3 or 4 and has no holes of odd length at least 7, and is called a heptagraph if it has no cycles of length less than 7 and has no holes of odd length at least 9. Let $ł\ge 2$ be an integer. The current authors proved that a graph is 4- colorable if it has no cycles of length less than $2ł+1$ and has no holes of odd length at least $2ł+3$. Confirming a conjecture of Plummer and Zha, Chudnovsky and Seymour proved that every pentagraph is 3-colorable. Following their idea, we show that ev…
We study lattice walks in a Weyl chamber of type A with fixed or free end points. For lattice walk models with zero drift that may be counted by means of a reflection argument, we determine asymptotics for the number of such walks as their length tends to infinity. These models are equivalent to the lock step model and the random turns model of vicious walkers. As special cases, our main results include various asymptotic formulas found in the literature.
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system and write $P_W(q)$ for its Poincaré series. Lusztig has shown that the quotient $P_W(q^2)/P_W(q)$ is equal to a certain power series $L_{W}(q)$, defined by specializing one variable in the generating function recording the lengths and absolute lengths of the involutions in $W$. The simplest inductive method of proving this result for finite Coxeter groups suggests a natural bivariate generalization $L^J_W(s,q) \in \mathbb{Z}[[s,q]]$ depending on a subset $J\subset S$. This new power series specializes to $L_W(q)$ when $s=-1$ and is given explicitly by a sum of r…
For some extremal (optimal) odd unimodular lattice $L$ in dimensions $12,16,20,28,32,36,40$ and $44$, we determine all integers $k$ such that $L$ contains a $k$-frame. This result yields the existence of an extremal Type I $\mathbb{Z}_{k}$-code of lengths $12,16,20,32,36,40$ and $44$, and a near-extremal Type I $\mathbb{Z}_k$-code of length $28$ for positive integers $k$ with only a few exceptions.
A Barker sequence is a binary sequence for which all nontrivial aperiodic autocorrelations are at most 1 in magnitude. An old conjecture due to Turyn asserts that there is no Barker sequence of length greater than 13. In 1961, Turyn and Storer gave an elementary, though somewhat complicated, proof that this conjecture holds for odd lengths. We give a new and simpler proof of this result.
Very odd sequences were introduced in 1973 by J. Pelikan who conjectured that there were none of length >=5. This conjecture was disproved by MacWilliams and Odlyzko in 1977 who proved there are in fact many very odd sequences. We give connections of these sequences with duadic codes, cyclic difference sets, levels (Stufen) of cyclotomic fields, and derive some new asymptotic results on their lengths and on S(n), which denotes the number of very odd sequences of length n.
The run vector of a binary sequence reflects the run structure of the sequence, which is given by the set of all substrings of the run length encoding. The run vector and the aperiodic autocorrelations of a binary sequence are strongly related. In this paper, we analyze the run vector of skew-symmetric binary sequences. Using the derived results we present a new and different proof that there exists no Barker sequence of odd length n > 13. Barker sequences are binary sequences whose off-peak aperiodic autocorrelations are all in magnitude at most 1.
For some extremal (optimal) odd unimodular lattices L in dimensions n=12,16,20,32,36,40 and 44, we determine all positive integers k such that L contains a k-frame. This result yields the existence of an extremal Type I Zk-code of lengths 12,16,20,32,36,40 and 44 and a near-extremal Type I Zk-code of length 28 for positive integers k with only a few exceptions.
