Very odd sequences were introduced in 1973 by J. Pelikan who conjectured that there were none of length >=5. This conjecture was disproved by MacWilliams and Odlyzko in 1977 who proved there are in fact many very odd sequences. We give connections of these sequences with duadic codes, cyclic difference sets, levels (Stufen) of cyclotomic fields, and derive some new asymptotic results on their lengths and on S(n), which denotes the number of very odd sequences of length n.
In this note we conjecture Rogers-Ramanujan type colored partition identities for an array with odd number of rows w such that the first and the last row consist of even positive integers. In a strange way this is different from the partition identities for the array with odd number of rows w such that the first and the last row consist of odd positive integers -- the partition identities conjectured by S. Capparelli, A. Meurman, A. Primc and the author and related to standard representations of the affine Lie algebra of type $C^{(1)}_\ell$ for $w=2\ell+1$. The conjecture is based on numerical…
In this paper, we prove the Iwasawa main conjecture for elliptic curves at an odd supersingular prime p. Some consequences are the p-parts of the leading term formulas in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectures for analytic rank 0 or 1.
A famous conjecture of Parkin-Shanks predicts that $p(n)$ is odd with density $1/2$. Despite the remarkable amount of work of the last several decades, however, even showing this density is positive seems out of reach. In a 2018 paper with Judge, we introduced a different approach and conjectured the "striking" fact that, if for any $A \equiv \pm 1\ (\bmod 6)$ the multipartition function $p_A(n)$ has positive odd density, then so does $p(n)$. Similarly, the positive odd density of any $p_{A}(n)$ with $A\equiv 3\ (\bmod 6)$ would imply that of $p_3(n)$. Our conjecture was shown to be a corollar…
The Descartes-Frenicle-Sorli conjecture predicts that $k=1$ if $q^k n^2$ is an odd perfect number with Euler prime $q$. In this note, we present some conditions equivalent to this conjecture.
In a recent paper, Merca posed three conjectures on congruences for specific convolutions of a sum of odd divisor functions with a generating function for generalized $m$-gonal numbers. Extending Merca's work, we complete the proof of these conjectures.
If $N={q^k}{n^2}$ is an odd perfect number given in Eulerian form, then the Descartes-Frenicle-Sorli conjecture predicts that $k=ν_{q}(N)=1$. In this article, we give a short proof for this conjecture.
A famous conjecture of Chowla states that the Liouville function $λ(n)$ has negligible correlations with its shifts. Recently, the authors established a weak form of the logarithmically averaged Elliott conjecture on correlations of multiplicative functions, which in turn implied all the odd order cases of the logarithmically averaged Chowla conjecture. In this note, we give a new and shorter proof of the odd order cases of the logarithmically averaged Chowla conjecture. In particular, this proof avoids all mention of ergodic theory, which had an important role in the previous proof.
The Euler's form of odd perfect numbers, if any, is $n=π^αN^2$, where $π$ is prime, $(π,N)=1$ and $π\equiv α\equiv 1 \pmod{4}$. Dris conjecture states that $N>π^α$. We find that $N^2>\frac{1}{2}π^γ$, with $γ=max\{ω(n)-1,α\}$; $ω(n)\geq 9$ is the number of distinct prime factors of $n$.
If $N={q^k}{n^2}$ is an odd perfect number given in Eulerian form, then the Descartes-Frenicle-Sorli conjecture predicts that $k=1$. Brown has recently announced a proof for the inequality $q < n$, and a partial proof that $q^k < n$ holds under many cases. In this article, we give a strategy for strengthening Brown's result to $q^2 < n$.
A major difficult problem in Galois theory is the characterization of profinite groups which are realizable as absolute Galois groups of fields. Recently the Kernel $n$-Unipotent Conjecture and the Vanishing $n$-Massey Conjecture for $n\geq 3$ were formulated. These conjectures evolved in the last forty years as a byproduct of the application of topological methods to Galois cohomology. We show that both of these conjectures are true for odd rigid fields. This is the first case of a significant family of fields where both of the conjectures are verified besides fields whose Galois groups of $p…
Recently, Z.-W. Sun made the following conjecture: for any odd prime $p$ and odd integer $m$, $$ \frac{1}{m^2{m-1\choose (m-1)/2}}\Bigg(\sum_{k=0}^{(pm-1)/2}\frac{2k\choose k}{8^k} -\left(\frac{2}{p}\right)\sum_{k=0}^{(m-1)/2}\frac{2k\choose k}{8^k}\Bigg) \equiv 0\pmod{p^2}. $$ In this note, applying the "creative microscoping" method, introduced by the author and Zudilin, we confirm the above conjecture of Sun.
If $N={q^k}{n^2}$ is an odd perfect number given in Eulerian form, then Sorli's conjecture predicts that $k=ν_{q}(N)=1$. In this article, we give some further results related to this conjecture and those contained in the papers \cite{Dris} and \cite{Dris2}. (withdrawn because of a crucial gap in Theorem 1 [see https://arxiv.org/pdf/1309.0906.pdf for what is currently provable in this regard], as well as elementary mistakes in the numerical bounds from pages 2 to 4)
Dris conjectured in his masters thesis that the inequality $q^k < n$ always holds, if $N = {q^k}{n^2}$ is an odd perfect number with special prime $q$. In this note, we initially show that either of the two conditions $n < q^k$ or $σ(q)/n < σ(n)/q$ holds. This is achieved by first proving that $σ(q)/n \neq σ(n)/q^k$, where $σ(x)$ is the sum of the divisors of $x$. Using this analysis, we further show that the condition $q < n < q^k$ holds in four out of a total of six cases. Finally, we prove that $n < q^k$, and that this holds unconditionally. This finding disproves both the Dris Conjecture a…
Let $σ(x)$ be the sum of the divisors of $x$. If $N$ is odd and $σ(N) = 2N$, then the odd perfect number $N$ is said to be given in Eulerian form if $N = {q^k}{n^2}$ where $q$ is prime with $q \equiv k \equiv 1 \pmod 4$ and $\gcd(q,n) = 1$. In this note, we show that $q < n$ implies that Descartes's conjecture (previously Sorli's conjecture), $k = ν_{q}(N) = 1$, is not true. This then implies an unconditional proof for the biconditional $$k = ν_{q}(N) = 1 \Longleftrightarrow n < q.$$ Lastly, following a recent result of Cohen and Sorli, we show that if $q < n$, then either $q > 5$ or $k > 5$ i…
In 1973, Neil Sloane published a very short paper introducing an intriguing problem: Pick a decimal integer $n$ and multiply all its digits by each other. Repeat the process until a single digit $Δ(n)$ is obtained. $Δ(n)$ is called the \textsl{multiplicative digital root of $n$} or \textsl{the target of $n$}. The number of steps $Ξ(n)$ needed to reach $Δ(n)$, called the multiplicative persistence of $n$ or \textsl{the height of $n$} is conjectured to always be at most $11$. Like many other very simple to state number-theoretic conjectures, the multiplicative persistence mystery resisted numero…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. In the paper we collect the author's various conjectures on congruences modulo $p$ or $p^2$, which are concerned with sums of binomial coefficients, Lucas sequences, power residues and special binary quadratic forms.
We show that the classical Kuga-Satake construction gives rise, away from characteristic 2, to an open immersion from the moduli of primitively polarized K3 surfaces (of any fixed degree) to a certain regular integral model for a Shimura variety of orthogonal type. This allows us to attach to every polarized K3 surface in odd characteristic an abelian variety such that divisors on the surface can be identified with certain endomorphisms of the attached abelian variety. In turn, this reduces the Tate conjecture for K3 surfaces over finitely generated fields of odd characteristic to a version of…
Fuglede's conjecture in $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^{d}$, $p$ a prime, says that a subset $E$ tiles $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^{d}$ by translation if and only if $E$ is spectral, meaning any complex-valued function $f$ on $E$ can be written as a linear combination of characters orthogonal with respect to $E$. We disprove Fuglede's conjecture in $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^{4}$ for all odd primes $p$, by using log-Hadamard matrices to exhibit spectral sets of size $2p$ which do not tile, extending the result of Aten et al. that the conjecture fails in $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^{4}$ for primes $p \equiv 3 \pmod 4$ and in $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^{5…
For two odd primes $p$ and $q$ such that $p<q$, let $A(p,q):=(a_k)_{k=1}^{\infty}$ be the arithmetic progression whose $k$th term is given by $a_k=(k-1)(q-p)+p$ (i.e., with $a_1=p$ and $a_2=q$). Here we conjecture that for every positive integer $a>1$ there exist a positive integer $n$ and two odd primes $p$ and $q$ such that $a$ can be expressed as a sum of the first $2n$ terms of the arithmetic progression $A(p,q)$. Notice that in the case of even $a$, this conjecture immediately follows from Goldbach's conjecture. We also propose the analogous conjecture for odd positive integers $a>1$ as w…
Euler showed that if an odd perfect number $N$ exists, it must consist of two parts $N=q^k n^2$, with $q$ prime, $q \equiv k \equiv 1 \pmod{4}$, and gcd$(q,n)=1$. Dris conjectured that $q^k < n$. We first show that $q<n$ for all odd perfect numbers. Afterwards, we show $q^k < n$ holds in many cases.
The formal degree conjecture relates the formal degree of an irreducible square-integrable representation of a reductive group over a local field to the special value of the adjoint $γ$-factor of its $L$-parameter. In this paper, we prove the formal degree conjecture for odd special orthogonal and metaplectic groups in the generic case, which combined with Arthur's work on the local Langlands correspondence implies the conjecture in full generality.
Recently, Andrews, Chan, Kim and Osburn introduced the even strings and the odd strings in the overpartitions. We show that their conjecture $A_k (n) \geq B_k (n)$ holds for large enough positive integers n, where A_k(n) (resp. B_k(n)) is the number of odd (resp. even) strings along the overpartitions of n. We introduce m-strings and show that how this new combinatorial object is related with another positivity conjecture of Andrews, Chan, Kim, and Osburn. Finally, we confirm that the positivity conjecture is also true for large enough integers.
The Collatz conjecture can be stated in terms of the reduced Collatz function R(x) = (3x+1)/2^m (where 2^m is the larger power of 2 that divides 3x+1). The conjecture is: Starting from any odd positive integer and repeating R(x) we eventually get to 1. In a previous paper of the author the set of odd positive integers x such that R^k(x) = 1 has been characterized as the set of odd integers whose binary representation belongs to a set of strings G_k. Each string in G_k is the concatenation of k strings z_k z_{k-1} ... z_1 where each z_i is a finite and contiguous extract from some power of a st…
Let F be a totally real field and p an odd prime. If r is a continuous, semisimple, totally odd mod p representation of the absolute Galois group of F which is tamely ramified at all places of F dividing p, then we formulate a conjecture specifying the weights for which r is modular. This extends the conjecture of Diamond, Buzzard, and Jarvis, which supposed that p was unramified in F. We also prove a theorem towards the conjecture and provide some computational evidence.
Let p be an odd prime, n an odd positive integer and C the p-Sylow subgroup the class group of the p-cyclotomic extension of the rationals. When log(p) is bigger than n**(224n**4), we prove that the eigenspace on C attached to the (p-n)-th power of the Teichmuller character is trivial. The proof uses the K-theory of the integers and the Voronoi reduction theory of quadratic forms.
Jing Run Chen proved in 1966 that $p+2$ has at most two prime factors for infinitely many primes $p$. However, due to the parity problem we do not know whether $p+2$ has an odd (or even) number of prime factors infinitely often. In the present work it is proved that $p+d$ has an odd number of prime factors for at least one value of d=2,4,...16.
Kurepa's conjecture states that there is no odd prime $p$ that divides $!p=0!+1!+\cdots+(p-1)!$. We search for a counterexample to this conjecture for all $p<2^{34}$. We introduce new optimization techniques and perform the computation using graphics processing units. Additionally, we consider the generalized Kurepa's left factorial given by $!^{k}n=(0!)^k +(1!)^k +\cdots+((n-1)!)^{k}$, and show that for all integers $1<k<100$ there exists an odd prime $p$ such that $p\mid !^k p$.
For every positive integer $k$ such that $k>1,$ there are an infinity of odd integers $h$ with $ω(h) =k$ distinct prime divisors such that there do not exist a Circulant Hadamard matrix $H$ of order $n=4h^2.$ Moreover, our main result implies that for all of the odd numbers $h$, with $1< h < 10^{13}$ there is no Circulant Hadamard matrix of order $n=4h^2.$
For a fixed odd prime q we investigate the first and second order terms of the asymptotic series expansion for the number of n\le x such that q does not divide phi(n). Part of the analysis involves a careful study of the Euler-Kronecker constants for cyclotomic fields. In particular, we show that the prime k-tuples conjecture and a conjecture of Ihara about the distribution of these Euler-Kronecker constants cannot be both true.
We prove the following function field analog of the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture (which generalizes the twin prime conjecture) over large finite fields. Let n,r be positive integers and q an odd prime power. For distinct polynomials a_1, ..., a_r over F_q of degree <n let π(q,n;a) be the number of monic polynomials f over F_q of degree n such that f+a_1, ..., f+a_r are simultaneously irreducible. We prove that π(q,n;a) asymptotically equals q^n/n^r as q tends to infinity on odd prime powers and n,r are fixed (the tuple a1,...,a_r need not be fixed).
In this article, we introduce a systematic and uniform construction of non-singular plane curves of odd degrees $n \geq 5$ which violate the local-global principle. Our construction works unconditionally for $n$ divisible by $p^2$ for some odd prime number $p$. Moreover, our construction also works for $n$ divisible by some $p \geq 5$ which satisfies a conjecture on $p$-adic properties of the fundamental units of $\mathbb{Q}(p^{1/3})$ and $\mathbb{Q}((2p)^{1/3})$. This conjecture is a natural cubic analogue of the classical Ankeny-Artin-Chowla-Mordell conjecture for $\mathbb{Q}(p^{1/2})$ and e…
We compute the deformation rings of two dimensional mod l representations of Gal(Fbar/F) with fixed inertial type, for l an odd prime, p a prime distinct from p and F/Q_p a finite extension. We show that in this setting (when p is also odd) an analogue of the Breuil-Mézard conjecture holds, relating the special fibres of these deformation rings to the mod l reduction of certain irreducible representations of GL_2(O_F).
In this paper, we give a proof of a conjecture made by Zagier about the inverse of some matrix related to double zeta values of parity $(\mathrm{even},\mathrm{odd})$. As a result, we obtain a family of Bernoulli number identities. We further generalize this family to a more general setting involving binomial coefficients of negative arguments.
The Brjuno function was introduced by Yoccoz to study the linearizability of holomorphic germs and other one-dimensional small divisor problems. The Brjuno functions associated with various continued fractions including the by-excess continued fraction were subsequently investigated: it was conjectured that the difference between the classical Brjuno function and the even part of the Brjuno function associated with the by-excess continued fraction extends to a Hölder continuous function of the whole real line. In this paper, we prove this conjecture and we extend its validity to the more gener…
Let $E/K$ be a finite Galois extension of totally real number fields with Galois group $G$. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $r>1$ be an odd integer. The $p$-adic Beilinson conjecture relates the values at $s=r$ of $p$-adic Artin $L$-functions attached to the irreducible characters of $G$ to those of corresponding complex Artin $L$-functions. We show that this conjecture, the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture and a conjecture of Schneider imply the `$p$-part' of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the pair $(h^0(\mathrm{Spec}(E))(r), \mathbb Z[G])$. If $r>1$ is even we obtain a sim…
