We present a strengthening of the lemma on the lower bound of the slice rank by Tao (2016) motivated by the Croot-Lev-Pach-Ellenberg-Gijswijt bound on cap sets (2017, 2017). The Croot-Lev-Pach-Ellenberg-Gijswijt method and the lemma of Tao are based on the fact that the rank of a diagonal matrix is equal to the number of non-zero diagonal entries. Our lemma is based on the rank of upper-triangular matrices. This stronger lemma allows us to prove the following extension of the Ellenberg-Gijswijt result (2017). A tricolored ordered sum-free set in $\mathbb F_p^n$ is a collection $\{(a_i,b_i,c_i):i=1,2,\ldots,m\}$ of ordered triples in $(\mathbb F_p^n )^3$ such that $a_i+b_i+c_i=0$ and if $a_i+b_j+c_k=0$, then $i\le j\le k$. By using the new lemma, we present an upper bound on the size of a tricolored ordered sum-free set in $\mathbb F_p^n$.
In 2003, Cohn and Umans described a framework for proving upper bounds on the exponent $ω$ of matrix multiplication by reducing matrix multiplication to group algebra multiplication, and in 2005 Cohn, Kleinberg, Szegedy, and Umans proposed specific conjectures for how to obtain $ω=2$. In this paper we rule out obtaining $ω=2$ in this framework from abelian groups of bounded exponent. To do this we bound the size of tricolored sum-free sets in such groups, extending the breakthrough results of Croot, Lev, Pach, Ellenberg, and Gijswijt on cap sets. As a byproduct of our proof, we show that a var…
This work shows several direct and recursive constructions of ordered covering arrays using projection, fusion, column augmentation, derivation, concatenation and cartesian product. Upper bounds on covering codes in NRT spaces are also obtained by improving a general upper bound. We explore the connection between ordered covering arrays and covering codes in NRT spaces, which generalize similar results for the Hamming metric. Combining the new upper bounds for covering codes in NRT spaces and ordered covering arrays, we improve upper bounds on covering codes in NRT spaces for larger alphabets.…
A $k$-ordering of a graph $G$ assigns distinct order-labels from the set $\{1,\ldots,|G|\}$ to $k$ vertices in $G$. Given a $k$-ordering $H$, the ordered Ramsey number $R_<(H)$ is the minimum $n$ such that every edge-2-coloring of the complete graph on the vertex set $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ contains a copy of $H$, the $i$th smallest vertex of which either has order-label $i$ in $H$ or no order-label in $H$. This paper conducts the first systematic study of ordered Ramsey numbers for $1$-orderings of small graphs. We provide upper bounds for $R_<(H)$ for each connected $1$-ordering $H$ on $4$ vertic…
We introduce a containment relation of hypergraphs which respects linear orderings of vertices and investigate associated extremal functions. We extend, by means of a more generally applicable theorem, the n.log n upper bound on the ordered graph extremal function of F=({1,3}, {1,5}, {2,3}, {2,4}) due to Z. Furedi to the n.(log n)^2.(loglog n)^3 upper bound in the hypergraph case. We use Davenport-Schinzel sequences to derive almost linear upper bounds in terms of the inverse Ackermann function. We obtain such upper bounds for the extremal functions of forests consisting of stars whose all cen…
Let $Λ^{\ast}$ be the free monoid of (finite) words over a not necessarily finite alphabet $Λ$, which is equipped with some (partial) order. This ordering lifts to $Λ^{\ast}$, where it extends the divisibility ordering of words. The MacNeille completion of $Λ^{\ast}$ constitutes a complete lattice ordered monoid and is realized by the system of "closed" lower sets in $Λ^*$ (ordered by inclusion) or its isomorphic copy formed of the "closed" upper sets (ordered by reverse inclusion). Under some additional hypothesis on $Λ$, one can easily identify the closed lower sets as the finitely generated…
We prove that there are arbitrarily large indecomposable ordered sets T with a 2-chain C such that the smallest indecomposable proper superset U of C in T is T itself. Subsequently, we characterize all such indecomposable ordered sets T and 2-chains C. We also prove the same type of result for 2-antichains.
For ordered graphs $G$ and $H$, the ordered Ramsey number $r_<(G,H)$ is the smallest $n$ such that every red/blue edge coloring of the complete graph on vertices $\{1,\dots,n\}$ contains either a blue copy of $G$ or a red copy of $H$, where the embedding must preserve the relative order of vertices. One number of interest, first studied by Conlon, Fox, Lee, and Sudakov, is the "off-diagonal" ordered Ramsey number $r_<(M, K_3)$, where $M$ is an ordered matching on $n$ vertices. In particular, Conlon et al. asked what asymptotic bounds (in $n$) can be obtained for $\max r_<(M, K_3)$, where the m…
We extend the definitions of upper and lower valuations on partially ordered sets, and consider the metrics they induce, in particular the metrics available (or not) based on the logarithms of such valuations. Motivating applications in computational linguistics and computational biology are indicated.
In this work, constructions of ordered covering arrays are discussed and applied to obtain new upper bounds on covering codes in Rosenbloom-Tsfasman spaces (RT spaces), improving or extending some previous results.
An ordered hypergraph is a hypergraph $H$ with a specified linear ordering of the vertices, and the appearance of an ordered hypergraph $G$ in $H$ must respect the specified order on $V(G)$. In on-line Ramsey theory, Builder iteratively presents edges that Painter must immediately color. The $t$-color on-line size Ramsey number $\tilde R_t (G)$ of an ordered hypergraph $G$ is the minimum number of edges Builder needs to play (on a large ordered set of vertices) to force Painter using $t$ colors to produce a monochromatic copy of $G$. The monotone tight path $P_r^{(k)}$ is the ordered hypergrap…
A graded partially ordered set is Eulerian if every interval has the same number of elements of even rank and of odd rank. Face lattices of convex polytopes are Eulerian. For Eulerian partially ordered sets, the flag vector can be encoded efficiently in the cd-index. The cd-index of a polytope has all positive entries. An important open problem is to give the broadest natural class of Eulerian posets having nonnegative cd-index. This paper completely determines which entries of the cd-index are nonnegative for all Eulerian posets. It also shows that there are no other lower or upper bounds on …
An edge-ordered graph is a graph with a linear ordering of its edges. Two edge-ordered graphs are equivalent if their is an isomorphism between them preserving the ordering of the edges. The edge-ordered Ramsey number $r_{edge}(H; q)$ of an edge-ordered graph $H$ is the smallest $N$ such that there exists an edge-ordered graph $G$ on $N$ vertices such that, for every $q$-coloring of the edges of $G$, there is a monochromatic subgraph of $G$ equivalent to $H$. Recently, Balko and Vizer announced that $r_{edge}(H;q)$ exists. However, their proof uses the Graham-Rothschild theorem and consequentl…
The rank of a point-line geometry G is usually defined as the generating rank of G, namely the minimal cardinality of a generating set. However, when the subspace lattice of G satisfies the Exchange Property we can also try a different definition: consider all chains of subspaces of G and take the least upper bound of their lengths as the rank of G. If G is finitely generated then these two definitions yield the same number. On the other hand, as we shall show in this paper, if infinitely many points are needed to generate G then the rank as defined in the latter way is often (perhaps always) …

A tri-colored sum-free set in an abelian group $H$ is a collection of ordered triples in $H^3$, $\{(a_i,b_i,c_i)\}_{i=1}^m$, such that the equation $a_i+b_j+c_k=0$ holds if and only if $i=j=k$. Using a variant of the lemma introduced by Croot, Lev, and Pach in their breakthrough work on arithmetic-progression-free sets, we prove that the size of any tri-colored sum-free set in $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ is bounded above by $6 {n \choose \lfloor n/3 \rfloor}$. This upper bound is tight, up to a factor subexponential in $n$: there exist tri-colored sum-free sets in $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ of size greater than ${…
Let $ex(n, P)$ be the maximum possible number of ones in any 0-1 matrix of dimensions $n \times n$ that avoids $P$. Matrix $P$ is called minimally non-linear if $ex(n, P) = ω(n)$ but $ex(n, P') = O(n)$ for every strict subpattern $P'$ of $P$. We prove that the ratio between the length and width of any minimally non-linear 0-1 matrix is at most $4$, and that a minimally non-linear 0-1 matrix with $k$ rows has at most $5k-3$ ones. We also obtain an upper bound on the number of minimally non-linear 0-1 matrices with $k$ rows. In addition, we prove corresponding bounds for minimally non-linear ord…
A proper vertex colouring of a graph is \emph{nested} if the vertices of each of its colour classes can be ordered by inclusion of their open neighbourhoods. Through a relation to partially ordered sets, we show that the nested chromatic number can be computed in polynomial time. Clearly, the nested chromatic number is an upper bound for the chromatic number of a graph. We develop multiple distinct bounds on the nested chromatic number using common properties of graphs. We also determine the behaviour of the nested chromatic number under several graph operations, including the direct, Cartesia…
We prove polynomial upper bounds of geometric Ramsey numbers of pathwidth-2 outerplanar triangulations in both convex and general cases. We also prove that the geometric Ramsey numbers of the ladder graph on $2n$ vertices are bounded by $O(n^{3})$ and $O(n^{10})$, in the convex and general case, respectively. We then apply similar methods to prove an $n^{O(\log(n))}$ upper bound on the Ramsey number of a path with $n$ ordered vertices.
A partial order is called semilinear iff the upper bounds of each element are linearly ordered and any two elements have a common upper bound. There exists, up to isomorphism, a unique countable existentially closed semilinear order, which we denote by S2. We study the reducts of S2, that is, the relational structures with the same domain as S2 all of whose relations are first-order definable in S2. Our main result is a classification of the model-complete cores of the reducts of S2. From this, we also obtain a classification of reducts up to first-order interdefinability, which is equivalent …
