The strong geodetic problem is a recent variation of the classical geodetic problem. For a graph $G$, its strong geodetic number ${\rm sg}(G)$ is the cardinality of a smallest vertex subset $S$, such that each vertex of $G$ lies on one fixed geodesic between a pair of vertices from $S$. In this paper, some general properties of the strong geodesic problem are studied, especially in connection with diameter of a graph. The problem is also solved for balanced complete bipartite graphs.
The strong geodetic number, $\text{sg}(G),$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of vertices such that by fixing one geodesic between each pair of selected vertices, all vertices of the graph are covered. In this paper, the study of the strong geodetic number of complete bipartite graphs is continued. The formula for $\text{sg}(K_{n,m})$ is given, as well as a formula for the crown graphs $S_n^0$. Bounds on $\text{sg}(Q_n)$ are also discussed.
The strong geodetic problem is to find the smallest number of vertices such that by fixing one shortest path between each pair, all vertices of the graph are covered. In this paper we study the strong geodetic problem on complete bipartite graphs; in particular, we discuss its asymptotic behavior. Some results for complete multipartite graphs are also derived. Finally, we prove that the strong geodetic problem restricted to (general) bipartite graphs is NP-complete.
The degree/diameter problem for mixed graphs asks for the largest possible order of a mixed graph with given diameter and degree parameters. Similarly the \emph{degree/geodecity} problem concerns the smallest order of a $k$-geodetic mixed graph with given minimum undirected and directed degrees; this is a generalisation of the classical degree/girth problem. In this paper we present new bounds on the order of mixed graphs with given diameter or geodetic girth and exhibit new examples of directed and mixed geodetic cages. In particular, we show that any $k$-geodetic mixed graph with excess one …
The {\em Kneser graph} $K(2n+k,n)$, for positive integers $n$ and $k$, is the graph $G=(V,E)$ such that $V=\{S\subseteq\{1,\ldots,2n+k\} : |S|=n\}$ and there is an edge $uv\in E$ whenever $u\cap v=\emptyset$. Kneser graphs have a nice combinatorial structure, and many parameters have been determined for them, such as the diameter, the chromatic number, the independence number, and, recently, the hull number (in the context of $P_3$-convexity). However, the determination of geodetic convexity parameters in Kneser graphs still remained open. In this work, we investigate both the geodetic number …
We study bipartite distance-regular Cayley graphs with diameter three or four. We give sufficient conditions under which a bipartite Cayley graph can be constructed on the semidirect product of a group -- the part of this bipartite Cayley graph which contains the identity element -- and $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$. We apply this to the case of bipartite distance-regular Cayley graphs with diameter three, and consider cases where the sufficient conditions are not satisfied for some specific groups such as the dihedral group. We also extend a result by Miklavič and Potočnik that relates difference sets to …
In this paper, we show that every bipartite distance-regular Cayley graph with diameter $3$ can be constructed on the semidirect product of a group and $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$, except possibly for one case.
In this paper we study Ramsey numbers for trees of diameter 3 (bistars) vs., respectively, trees of diameter 2 (stars), complete graphs, and many complete graphs. In the case of bistars vs. many complete graphs, we determine this number exactly as a function of the Ramsey number for the complete graphs. We also determine the order of growth of the bipartite $k$-color Ramsey number for a bistar.
We consider the bipartite version of the {\it degree/diameter problem}, namely, given natural numbers $d\ge2$ and $D\ge2$, find the maximum number $\N^b(d,D)$ of vertices in a bipartite graph of maximum degree $d$ and diameter $D$. In this context, the bipartite Moore bound $\M^b(d,D)$ represents a general upper bound for $\N^b(d,D)$. Bipartite graphs of order $\M^b(d,D)$ are very rare, and determining $\N^b(d,D)$ still remains an open problem for most $(d,D)$ pairs. This paper is a follow-up to our earlier paper \cite{FPV12}, where a study on bipartite $(d,D,-4)$-graphs (that is, bipartite gr…

Let $D$ be an orientation of a simple graph. Given $u,v\in V(D)$, a directed shortest $(u,v)$-path is a $(u,v)$-geodesic. $S \subseteq V(D)$ is convex if, for every $u,v \in S$, the vertices in each $(u,v)$-geodesic and in each $(v,u)$-geodesic are in $S$. For each $S \subseteq V(D)$ the (convex) hull of $S$, denoted by $[S]$, is the smallest convex set containing $S$. $S \subseteq V(D)$ is a hull set if $[S] = V(D)$. $S \subseteq V(D)$ is a geodetic set of $D$ if each vertex of $D$ lies in a $(u,v)$-geodesic, for some $u,v \in S$. The cardinality of a minimum hull set (resp. geodetic set) of …
The first multiplicative Zagreb index of a graph $G$ is the product of the square of every vertex degree, while the second multiplicative Zagreb index is the product of the degree of each edge over all edges. In our work, we explore the multiplicative Zagreb indices of bipartite graphs of order $n$ with diameter $d$, and sharp upper bounds are obtained for these indices of graphs in $\mathcal{B}(n,d)$, where $\mathcal{B}(n, d)$ is the set of all $n$-vertex bipartite graphs with the diameter $d$. In addition, we explore the relationship between the maximal multiplicative Zagreb indices of graph…
Let $C_{d,k}$ be the largest number of vertices in a Cayley digraph of degree $d$ and diameter $k$, and let $BC_{d,k}$ be the largest order of a bipartite Cayley digraph for given $d$ and $k$. For every degree $d\geq2$ and for every odd $k$ we construct Cayley digraphs of order $2k\left(\lfloor\frac{d}{2}\rfloor\right)^k$ and diameter at most $k$, where $k\ge 3$, and bipartite Cayley digraphs of order $2(k-1)\left(\lfloor\frac{d}{2}\rfloor\right)^{k-1}$ and diameter at most $k$, where $k\ge 5$. These constructions yield the bounds $C_{d,k} \ge 2k\left(\lfloor\frac{d}{2}\rfloor\right)^k$ for od…
Mixed graphs can be seen as digraphs that have both arcs and edges (or digons, that is, two opposite arcs). In this paper, we consider the case where such graphs are bipartite. As main results, we show that in this context the Moore-like bound is attained in the case of diameter $k=3$, and that bipartite mixed graphs of diameter $k\ge 4$ do not exist.
The modelling of interconnection networks by graphs motivated the study of several extremal problems that involve well known parameters of a graph (degree, diameter, girth and order) and ask for the optimal value of one of them while holding the other two fixed. Here we focus in {\em bipartite Moore graphs\/}, that is, bipartite graphs attaining the optimum order, fixed either the degree/diameter or degree/girth. The fact that there are very few bipartite Moore graphs suggests the relaxation of some of the constraints implied by the bipartite Moore bound. First we deal with {\em local bipartit…
A bipartite graph $G=(V,E)$ with $V=V_1\cup V_2$ is biregular if all the vertices of a stable set $V_i$ have the same degree $r_i$ for $i=1,2$. In this paper, we give an improved new Moore bound for an infinite family of such graphs with odd diameter. This problem was introduced in 1983 by Yebra, Fiol, and Fàbrega.\\ Besides, we propose some constructions of bipartite biregular graphs with diameter $d$ and large number of vertices $N(r_1,r_2;d)$, together with their spectra. In some cases of diameters $d=3$, $4$, and $5$, the new graphs attaining the Moore bound are unique up to isomorphism.
Perfect Matching-Cut is the problem of deciding whether a graph has a perfect matching that contains an edge-cut. We show that this problem is NP-complete for planar graphs with maximum degree four, for planar graphs with girth five, for bipartite five-regular graphs, for graphs of diameter three and for bipartite graphs of diameter four. We show that there exist polynomial time algorithms for the following classes of graphs: claw-free, $P_5$-free, diameter two, bipartite with diameter three and graphs with bounded tree-width.
We consider the bipartite version of the degree/diameter problem, namely, given natural numbers Δ \geq 2 and D \geq 2, find the maximum number Nb(Δ,D) of vertices in a bipartite graph of maximum degree Δ and diameter D. In this context, the Moore bipartite bound Mb(Δ,D) represents an upper bound for Nb(Δ,D). Bipartite graphs of maximum degree Δ, diameter D and order Mb(Δ,D), called Moore bipartite graphs, have turned out to be very rare. Therefore, it is very interesting to investigate bipartite graphs of maximum degree Δ \geq 2, diameter D \geq 2 and order Mb(Δ,D) - εwith small ε> 0, that is,…
In an effort to find more examples of amalgamation classes whose almost sure theories are the same as their generic theories as well as amalgamation classes whose almost sure theories are different from their generic theories, we address our attention to two new cases: the bipartite diameter 3 metrically homogeneous graphs of generic type. These graphs were identified by Cherlin, and are determined by certain forbidden configurations. In this paper, we explicitly identify and enumerate their ages, for which we then establish both unlabeled and labeled 0-1 laws. Finally, we show that for one of…
In this paper we introduce the circuit diameter of polyhedra, which is always bounded from above by the combinatorial diameter. We consider dual transportation polyhedra defined on general bipartite graphs. For complete $M{\times}N$ bipartite graphs the Hirsch bound $(M{-}1)(N{-}1)$ on the combinatorial diameter is a known tight bound (Balinski, 1984). For the circuit diameter we show the much stronger bound $M{+}N{-}2$ for all dual transportation polyhedra defined on arbitrary bipartite graphs with $M{+}N$ nodes.
In this paper we give graphs with the largest known order for a given degree $Δ$ and diameter $D$. The graphs are constructed from Moore bipartite graphs by replacement of some vertices by adequate structures. The paper also contains the latest version of the $(Δ, D)$ table for graphs.
We investigate a number of coloring problems restricted to bipartite graphs with bounded diameter. First, we investigate the $k$-List Coloring, List $k$-Coloring, and $k$-Precoloring Extension problems on bipartite graphs with diameter at most $d$, proving NP-completeness in most cases, and leaving open only the List $3$-Coloring and $3$-Precoloring Extension problems when $d=3$. Some of these results are obtained through a proof that the Surjective $C_6$-Homomorphism problem is NP-complete on bipartite graphs with diameter at most four. Although the latter result has been already proved [Vika…
A graph $G$ with $d+1$ distinct eigenvalues is called strongly distance-regular if $G$ itself is distance-regular, and its distance-$d$ graph $G_d$ is strongly-regular. In this note we provide a spectral characterization of those distance-regular graphs with diameter $d=4$ which are strongly distance-regular. As a byproduct, it is shown that all bipartite strongly distance-regular graphs with such a diameter are antipodal.
In this paper we will look at the relationship between the intersection number c2 and its diameter for a distance-regular graph. And also, we give some tools to show that a distance-regular graph with large c2 is bipartite, and a tool to show that if kD is too small then the distance-regular graph has to be antipodal.
A shelling of a graph, viewed as an abstract simplicial complex that is pure of dimension 1, is an ordering of its edges such that every edge is adjacent to some other edges appeared previously. In this paper, we focus on complete bipartite graphs and trees. For complete bipartite graphs, we obtain an exact formula for their shelling numbers. And for trees, we relate their shelling numbers to linear extensions of tree posets and bound shelling numbers using vertex degrees and diameter.
The Near-Bipartiteness problem is that of deciding whether or not the vertices of a graph can be partitioned into sets $A$ and $B$, where $A$ is an independent set and $B$ induces a forest. The set $A$ in such a partition is said to be an independent feedback vertex set. Yang and Yuan proved that Near-Bipartiteness is polynomial-time solvable for graphs of diameter 2 and NP-complete for graphs of diameter 4. We show that Near-Bipartiteness is NP-complete for graphs of diameter 3, resolving their open problem. We also generalise their result for diameter 2 by proving that even the problem of co…
Let $k$ be an integer with $k\geq 2$. A digraph $D$ is $k$-quasi-transitive, if for any path $x_0x_1\ldots x_k$ of length $k$, $x_0$ and $x_k$ are adjacent. Suppose that there exists a path of length at least $k+2$ in $D$. Let $P$ be a shortest path of length $k+2$ in $D$. Wang and Zhang [Hamiltonian paths in $k$-quasi-transitive digraphs, Discrete Mathematics, 339(8) (2016) 2094--2099] proved that if $k$ is even and $k\ge 4$, then $D[V(P)]$ and $D[V(D)\setminus V(P)]$ are both semicomplete digraphs. In this paper, we shall prove that if $k$ is odd and $k\ge 5$, then $D[V(P)]$ is either a semi…
We present formulas to compute the P3-geodetic number, the P3-hull number and the percolation time for a caterpillar, in terms of certain sequences associated with it. In addition, we find a connection between the percolation time of a unit interval graph and a parameter involving the diameter of a unit interval graph related to it. Finally, we present a hereditary graph class, defined by forbidden induced subgraphs, such that its percolation time is equal to one.
n the $k$-diameter component connectivity model a network is consider operational if there is a component with diameter at least $k$. Therefore, a network is in a failure state if every component has diameter less than $k$. In this paper we find the vertex variant of the $k$-diameter component connectivity parameter, which is the minimum number of vertex deletions in order to put a network into a failure state, for particular classes of graphs. We also show the mixed variant by allowing vertex and edge failures within the network. We show results for paths, cycles, complete, and complete bipar…
Both the combinatorial and the circuit diameters of polyhedra are of interest to the theory of linear programming for their intimate connection to a best-case performance of linear programming algorithms. We study the diameters of dual network flow polyhedra associated to $b$-flows on directed graphs $G=(V,E)$ and prove quadratic upper bounds for both of them: the minimum of $(|V|-1)\cdot |E|$ and $\frac{1}{6}|V|^3$ for the combinatorial diameter, and $\frac{|V|\cdot (|V|-1)}{2}$ for the circuit diameter. The latter strengthens the cubic bound implied by a result in [De Loera, Hemmecke, Lee; 2…
Let $\G$ denote a bipartite distance-regular graph with vertex set $X$ and diameter $D \ge 3$. Fix $x \in X$ and let $L$ (resp. $R$) denote the corresponding lowering (resp. raising) matrix. We show that each $Q$-polynomial structure for $\G$ yields a certain linear dependency among $RL^2$, $LRL$, $L^2R$, $L$. Define a partial order $\le$ on $X$ as follows. For $y,z \in X$ let $y \le z$ whenever $\partial(x,y)+\partial(y,z)=\partial(x,z)$, where $\partial$ denotes path-length distance. We determine whether the above linear dependency gives this poset a uniform or strongly uniform structure. We…
In this paper, we study $(1,2)$-step competition graphs of bipartite tournaments. A bipartite tournament means an orientation of a complete bipartite graph. We show that the $(1,2)$-step competition graph of a bipartite tournament has at most one non-trivial component or consists of exactly two complete components of size at least three and, especially in the former, the diameter of the nontrivial component is at most three if it exists. Based on this result, we show that, among the connected non-complete graphs which are triangle-free or the cycles of which are edge-disjoint, $K_{1,4}$ is the…
It is known that a distance-regular graph with valency $k$ at least three admits at most two Q-polynomial structures. % In this note we show that all distance-regular graphs with diameter four and valency at least three admitting two $Q$-polynomial structures are either dual bipartite or almost dual imprimitive. By the work of Dickie \cite{Dickie} this implies that any distance-regular graph with diameter $d$ at least four and valency at least three admitting two $Q$-polynomial structures is, provided it is not a Hadamard graph, either the cube $H(d,2)$ with $d$ even, the half cube ${1}/{2} H(…
We consider a bipartite distance-regular graph $G$ with diameter at least 4 and valency at least 3. Fix a vertex of $G$ and let $T$ denote the corresponding subconstituent algebra. We give a detailed description of a certain type of irreducible $T$-module, said to be thin with endpoint 2.
A graph $G$ on $n$ vertices of diameter $D$ is called $H$-palindromic if $α(G,k) = α(G,D-k)$ for all $k=0, 1, \dots, \left \lfloor{\frac{D}{2}}\right \rfloor$, where $α(G,k)$ is the number of unordered pairs of vertices at distance $k$. Quantities $α(G,k)$ form coefficients of the Hosoya polynomial. In 1999, Caporossi, Dobrynin, Gutman and Hansen showed that there are exactly five $H$-palindromic trees of even diameter and conjectured that there are no such trees of odd diameter. We prove this conjecture for bipartite graphs. An infinite family of $H$-palindromic trees of diameter $6$ is also …
Let $G$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph with diameter $D$ at least 4. Assume that the intersection numbers of $G$ satisfy $a_i=0$ for $0 \leq i \leq D-1$ and $a_D\neq 0$. We show that $G$ is a polygon, a folded cube, or an Odd graph.
In this paper, we study distance-regular graphs $Γ$ that have a pair of distinct vertices, say x and y, such that the number of common neighbors of x and y is about half the valency of $Γ$. We show that if the diameter is at least three, then such a graph, besides a finite number of exceptions, is a Taylor graph, bipartite with diameter three or a line graph.
Koh and Tay proved a fundamental classification of $G$ vertex-multiplications into three classes $\mathscr{C}_0, \mathscr{C}_1$ and $\mathscr{C}_2$. They also showed that any vertex-multiplication of a tree with diameter at least 3 does not belong to the class $\mathscr{C}_2$. Of interest, $G$ vertex-multiplications are extensions of complete $n$-partite graphs and Gutin characterised complete bipartite graphs with an ingenious use of Sperner's Theorem. In this paper, we investigate vertex-multiplications of trees with diameter $4$ in $\mathscr{C}_0$ (or $\mathscr{C}_1$) and exhibit its intric…
The oriented diameter of a bridgeless graph $G$ is $\min\{diam(H)\ | H\ is\ an orientation\ of\ G\}$. A path in an edge-colored graph $G$, where adjacent edges may have the same color, is called rainbow if no two edges of the path are colored the same. The rainbow connection number $rc(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ for which there exists a $k$-edge-coloring of $G$ such that every two distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by a rainbow path. In this paper, we obtain upper bounds for the oriented diameter and the rainbow connection number of a graph in terms of $rad(G)$ and $η(G)$, wher…
Motivated by recent extensive studies on Wenger graphs, we introduce a new infinite class of bipartite graphs of the similar type, called linearized Wenger graphs. The spectrum, diameter and girth of these linearized Wenger graphs are determined.
In this paper we introduce a new infinite class of bipartite graphs, called jumped Wenger graphs, which are closely related to Wenger graphs. An tight upper bound of the diameter and the exact girth of a jumped Wenger graph $J_m(q, i, j )$ for integers $i, j$, $1\leq i <j \leq m+2$, are determined. In particular, the exact diameter of the jumped Wenger graph $J_m(q, i, j)$ if $(i, j)=(m,m+2), (m+1,m+2)$ or $(m,m+1)$ is also obtained.
Let $G$ be a simple undirected $n$-vertex graph with the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix $L(G)$, $\det (λI - L (G))=\sum_{k = 0}^n (-1)^k c_k λ^{n - k}$. It is well known that for trees the Laplacian coefficient $c_{n-2}$ is equal to the Wiener index of $G$. Using a result of Zhou and Gutman on the relation between the Laplacian coefficients and the matching numbers in subdivided bipartite graphs, we characterize first the trees with given diameter and then the connected graphs with given radius which simultaneously minimize all Laplacian coefficients. This approach generaliz…

Characterizing the graph classes such that, on $n$-vertex $m$-edge graphs in the class, we can compute the diameter faster than in ${\cal O}(nm)$ time is an important research problem both in theory and in practice. We here make a new step in this direction, for some metrically defined graph classes. Specifically, a subgraph $H$ of a graph $G$ is called a retract of $G$ if it is the image of some idempotent endomorphism of $G$. Two necessary conditions for $H$ being a retract of $G$ is to have $H$ is an isometric and isochromatic subgraph of $G$. We say that $H$ is an absolute retract of some …
A graph $G$ is $F$-saturated if it contains no copy of $F$ as a subgraph but the addition of any new edge to $G$ creates a copy of $F$. We prove that for $s \geq 3$ and $t \geq 2$, the minimum number of copies of $K_{1,t}$ in a $K_s$-saturated graph is $Θ( n^{t/2})$. More precise results are obtained when $t = 2$ where the problem is related to Moore graphs with diameter 2 and girth 5. We prove that for $s \geq 4$ and $t \geq 3$, the minimum number of copies of $K_{2,t}$ in an $n$-vertex $K_s$-saturated graph is at least $Ω( n^{t/5 + 8/5})$ and at most $O(n^{t/2 + 3/2})$. These results answer …
Inspired by connections described in a recent paper by Mark L. Lewis, between the common divisor graph $\Ga(X)$ and the prime vertex graph $Δ(X)$, for a set $X$ of positive integers, we define the bipartite divisor graph $B(X)$, and show that many of these connections flow naturally from properties of $B(X)$. In particular we establish links between parameters of these three graphs, such as number and diameter of components, and we characterise bipartite graphs that can arise as $B(X)$ for some $X$. Also we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of subconfigurations of $B(X)$, fo…
