Atomic-scale helices exist as motifs for several material lattices. We examine a tight-binding model for a single one-dimensional monatomic chain with a p-orbital basis coiled into a helix. A topologically nontrivial phase emerging from this model supports a zero-energy mode localized to a boundary, always embedded within a continuum band, regardless of termination site. We identify a topological invariant for this phase that is related to the number of zero energy end modes by means of the bulk-boundary correspondence, and give strict conditions for the existence of the bound state. Another, non-topological, gapped edge mode in the model spectrum has practical consequences for surface states in e.g. trigonal tellurium and selenium and other van der Waals-bonded one-dimensional semiconductors.
We propose a framework to realize helical edge states in phononic systems using two identical lattices with interlayer couplings between them. A methodology is presented to systematically transform a quantum mechanical lattice which exhibits edge states to a phononic lattice, thereby developing a family of lattices with edge states. Parameter spaces with topological phase boundaries in the vicinity of the transformed system are illustrated to demonstrate the robustness to mechanical imperfections. A potential realization in terms of fundamental mechanical building blocks is presented for the h…
Topological insulators (TI) are materials having an energy band gap in the bulk and conducting helical electronic states on the surface. The helical states are protected by time reversal symmetry thus are expected to be robust against static disorder scattering. In this work we report atomistic first principles analysis of disorder scattering in two-probe transport junctions made of three dimensional TI material Bi2Se3. The robustness of the device against disorder scattering is determined quantitatively. Examining many different scattering configurations, a general trend emerges on how strong…
We investigated the electronic structure of a silicene-like lattice with a line defect under the consideration of spin-orbit coupling. In the bulk energy gap, there are defect related bands corresponding to spin helical states localized beside the defect line: spin-up electrons flow forward on one side near to the line defect and move backward on the other side, and vice verse for spin-down electrons. When the system is subjected to random distribution of spin-flipping scatterers, electrons suffer much less spin-flipped scattering when they transport along the line defect than in the bulk. An …
We study the possibility of realizing robust helical surface states in $Z_2=0$ systems. We find that the combination of anisotropy and finite-size confinement leads to the emergence of robust helical edge states in both 2D and 3D $Z_2=0$ systems. By investigating an anisotropic Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model in a finite sample, we demonstrate that the transport manifestation of the surface states is robust against non-magnetic disorder, resembling that of a $Z_2 = 1$ phase. Notably, the effective energy gap for the robust helical states can be efficiently engineered, allowing for potential applic…
Robustness of helical hinge states of three-dimensional weak second-order topological i sulators (WSOTIs) against disorders is studied. The pure WSOTI is obtained from a weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ first-order topological insulator through a surface band inversion. Both bulk states and surface states in the WSOTI are gapped, and in-gap valley-momentum locked helical hinge states are topologically protected by the surface valley-Chern number. In the presence of weak disorders, helical hinge states are robust against disorders while the quantized conductance of the states is fragile due to the inter-val…
We illustrate possible topological phases in honeycomb lattice with textures in electron hopping energy between nearest-neighboring sites and show that they are characterized by the mirror winding number intimately related to the chiral (or sublattice) symmetry. Analytic wave functions of zero-energy edge modes in ribbon geometry are provided, which are classified into even and odd sectors with respect to the mirror operation with the mirror plane perpendicular to the edge, and evolve into the topological helical edge states at finite momenta. Intriguingly our results demonstrate that in order…
Among the most interesting predictions in two-dimensional materials with a Dirac cone is the existence of the zeroth Landau level (LL), equally filled by electrons and holes with opposite chirality. The gapless edge states with helical spin structure emerge from Zeeman splitting at the LL filling factor $ν=0$ gapped quantum Hall state. We present observations of a giant nonlocal four-terminal transport in zero-gap HgTe quantum wells at the $ν=0$ quantum Hall state. Our experiment clearly demonstrates the existence of the robust helical edge state in a system with single valley Dirac cone mater…
Nonzero weak topological indices are thought to be a necessary condition to bind a single helical mode to lattice dislocations. In this work we show that higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) can, in fact, host a single helical mode along screw or edge dislocations (including step edges) in the absence of weak topological indices. When this occurs, the helical mode is necessarily bound to a dislocation characterized by a fractional Burgers vector, macroscopically detected by the existence of a stacking fault. The robustness of a helical mode on a partial defect is demonstrated by an adia…

We report the realization of a synthetic magnetic field for photons and polaritons in a honeycomb lattice of coupled semiconductor micropillars. A strong synthetic field is induced in both the s and p orbital bands by engineering a uniaxial hopping gradient in the lattice, giving rise to the formation of Landau levels at the Dirac points. We provide direct evidence of the sublattice symmetry breaking of the lowest-order Landau level wavefunction, a distinctive feature of synthetic magnetic fields. Our realization implements helical edge states in the gap between n=0 and n=1 Landau levels, expe…
We propose a nonlocal manipulation method to build topological devices through emerging robust helical surface states in Z_2=0 topological systems. Specifically, in a ribbon of Z_2=0 Bernevig- Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) model with finite-size effect, if magnetic impurities are doped on the top (bottom) edge, the edge states on the bottom (top) edge can be altered according to the strengths and directions of these magnetic impurities. Consequently, the backscattering between the emerging robust helical edge states and gapped normal edge states due to finite-size confinement is also changed, which makes…
In this work, we study the disorder effect on topological metals that support a pair of helical edge modes deeply embedded inside the gapless bulk states. Strikingly, we predict that a quantum spin Hall (QSH) phase can be obtained from such topological metals without opening a global band gap. To be specific, disorder can lead to a pair of robust helical edge states which is protected by an emergent $Z_2$ topological invariant, giving rise to a quantized conductance plateau in transport measurements. These results are instructive for solving puzzles in {various transport experiments on QSH mat…
Time reversal (T) invariant topological insulator is widely recognized as one of the fundamental discoveries in condensed matter physics, for which the most fascinating hallmark is perhaps a spin based topological protection, the total cancellation of scattering of conduction electrons with certain spins on matter surface. Recently, it has created a paradigm shift for topological insulators, from electronics to photonics, phononics as well as mechanics, bringing about not only involved new physics but also potential applications in robust wave transport. Despite the growing interests in realiz…
We discuss a platform for the synthetic realization of key physical properties of helical Tomonaga Luttinger liquids (HTLLs) with ultracold fermionic atoms in one-dimensional optical lattices. The HTLL is a strongly correlated metallic state where spin polarization and propagation direction of the itinerant particles are locked to each other. We propose an unconventional one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model which, at quarter filling, resembles the HTLL in the long wavelength limit, as we demonstrate with a combination of analytical (bosonization) and numerical (density matrix renormalization gr…
We show that burying of the Dirac point in semiconductor-based quantum-spin-Hall systems can generate unexpected robustness of edge states to magnetic fields. A detailed ${\bf k\cdot p}$ band-structure analysis reveals that InAs/GaSb and HgTe/CdTe quantum wells exhibit such buried Dirac points. By simulating transport in a disordered system described within an effective model, we further demonstrate that buried Dirac points yield nearly quantized edge conduction out to large magnetic fields, consistent with recent experiments.
We consider the combined effects of large spin-orbit couplings and a perpendicular magnetic field in a 2D honeycomb fermionic lattice. This system provides an elegant setup to generate versatile spin textures propagating along the edge of a sample. The spin-orbit coupling is shown to induce topological phase transitions between a helical quantum spin Hall phase and a chiral spin-imbalanced quantum Hall state. Besides, we find that the spin orientation of a single topological edge state can be tuned by a Rashba spin-orbit coupling, opening an interesting route towards quantum spin manipulation.…
Electronic systems harboring one dimensional helical modes, where the spin and momentum of the electron are locked, have lately become an important field of its own. When coupled to a conventional superconductor, such systems are expected to manifest topological superconductivity, a unique phase that gives rise to exotic Majorana zero modes. Even more interesting are fractional helical states which have not been observed before and which open the route for the realization of the generalized para fermions quasiparticles. Possessing non abelian exchange statistics, these quasiparticles may serve…
Odd numbers of Dirac points and helical states can exist at edges (surfaces) of two-dimensional (three-dimensional) topological insulators. In the bulk of a one-dimensional lattice (not an edge) with time reversal symmetry, however, a no-go theorem forbids the existence of an odd number of Dirac points or helical states. Introducing a magnetic field can violate the time reversal condition but would usually lift the degeneracy at the Dirac points. We find that a spatially periodic magnetic field with zero mean value can induce a single Dirac point in a one-dimensional system with spin-orbit cou…
Recent research on disorder effects in topological phases in quasicrystalline systems has received much attention. In this work, by numerically computing the (spin) Bott index and the thermal conductance, we reveal the effects of disorder on a class D chiral topological superconductor and a class DIII time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor in a two-dimensional Ammann-Beenker tiling quasicrystalline lattice. We demonstrate that both the topologically protected chiral and helical Majorana edge modes are robust against weak disorder in the quasicrystalline lattice. More fascinating is…
We show that edges of Quantum Spin Hall topological insulators represent a natural platform for realization of exotic supersolid phase. On one hand, fermionic edge modes are helical due to the nontrivial topology of the bulk. On the other hand, a disorder at the edge or magnetic adatoms may produce a dense array of localized spins interacting with the helical electrons. The spin subsystem is magnetically frustrated since the indirect exchange favors formation of helical spin order and the direct one favors (anti)ferromagnetic ordering of the spins. At a moderately strong direct exchange, the c…
The helical edge states of time-reversal invariant two-dimensional topological insulators are protected against backscattering in idealized models. In more realistic scenarios with a shallow confining potential at the sample boundary, additional strongly interacting edge states may arise, that could interfere with the topological protection of edge conduction. We find that interaction effects within the reconstructed edges are well described by the Luttinger liquid model. While interactions between this Luttinger liquid and the helical edge states can in principle give rise to dynamical spin p…
We study one-dimensional Kondo Lattices (KL) which consist of itinerant electrons interacting with Kondo impurities (KI) - localized quantum magnetic moments. We focus on KL with isotropic exchange interaction between electrons and KI and with a high KI density. The latter determines the principal róle of the indirect interaction between KI for the low energy physics. Namely, the Kondo physics becomes suppressed and all properties are governed by spin ordering. We present a first-ever comprehensive analytical theory of such KL at an arbitrary doping and predict a variety of regimes with differ…
Magnetic skyrmions have been the focus of intense research due to their potential applications in ultra-high density data and logic technologies, as well as for the unique physics arising from their antisymmetric exchange term and topological protections. In this work we prepare a chiral jammed state in chemically disordered (Fe, Co)Si consisting of a combination of randomly-oriented magnetic helices, labyrinth domains, rotationally disordered skyrmion lattices and/or isolated skyrmions. Using small angle neutron scattering, (SANS) we demonstrate a symmetry-breaking magnetic field sequence whi…
Topological electric quadrupole is a recently proposed concept that extends the theory of electric polarization of crystals to higher orders. Such a quadrupole phase supports topological states localized on both edges and corners. In this work, we show that in a quadrupole phase of honeycomb lattice, topological helical edge states and pseudo-spin-polarized corner states appear by making use of a pseudo-spin degree of freedom related to point group symmetry. Furthermore, we argue that a general condition for emergence of helical edge states in a (pseudo-)spinful quadrupole phase is mirror or t…
Weyl semimetals are gapless three-dimensional topological materials where two bands touch at even number of points in the Brillouin zone. In this work we study a zincblende lattice model realizing a time-reversal invariant Weyl semimetal. The bulk dynamics is decribed by twelve helical Weyl nodes. Surface states form a peculiar quasi two-dimensional helical metal fundamentally different from the Dirac form typical for topological insulators. Allowed direction of velocity and spin of low-energy surface excitations are locked to the cubic symmetry axes. The studied system illustrates general pro…

The discovery of three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators opens a gateway to generate unusual phases and particles made of the helical surface electrons, proposing new applications using unusual spin nature. Demonstration of the helical electron transport is a crucial step to both physics and device applications of topological insulators. Topological insulator nanowires, of which spin-textured surface electrons form 1D band manipulated by enclosed magnetic flux, offer a unique nanoscale platform to realize quantum transport of spin-momentum locking nature. Here, we report an observation o…
Helical superconductors form a two dimensional, time-reversal invariant topological phase characterized by a Kramers pair of Majorana edge modes (helical Majorana modes). Existing detection schemes to identify this phase rely either on spin transport properties, which are quite difficult to measure, or on local charge transport, which allows only a partial identification. Here we show that the presence of helical Majorana modes can be unambiguously revealed by measuring the nonlocal charge conductance. Focusing on a superconducting ring, we suggest two experiments that provide unique and robus…
We study the spin texture of a generic helical liquid, the edge modes of a two-dimensional topological insulator with broken axial spin-symmetry. By considering honeycomb and square lattice realizations of topological insulators, we show that in all cases the generic behavior of a momentum-dependent rotation of the spin quantization axis is realized. Here we establish this mechanism also for disk geometries with continuous rotational symmetry. Finally, we demonstrate that the rotation of spin-quantization axis remains intact for arbitrary geometries, i.e. in the absence of any continuous symme…
We formulate the lattice version of the three-dimensional SU(2) Landau level problem with time reversal invariance. By taking a Landau-type gauge, the system is reduced into the one-dimensional SU(2) Harper equation characterized by a periodic spin-dependent gauge potential. The surface spectra indicate the spatial separation of helical states with opposite eigenvalues of the lattice helicty operator. The band topology is investigated from both the analysis of the boundary helical Fermi surfaces and the calculation of the Z2-index based on the bulk wavefunctions. The transition between a 3D we…

This study investigates the topological behavior of a continuous elastic phononic structure characterized by a 3-term Kekulé distortion. The elastic waveguide consists of a hexagonal unit cell whose geometric dimensions are intentionally perturbed according to a generalized Kekulé scheme. The resulting structure exhibits an effective Hamiltonian that resembles a quantum spin Hall system, hence suggesting that the waveguide can support helical topological edge states. Using first-principles calculations, we show the existence of nondegenerate pseudospin states and a very peculiar 6-lobe pseudos…
The ground state of charge neutral graphene under perpendicular magnetic field was predicted to be a quantum Hall topological insulator with a ferromagnetic order and spin-filtered, helical edge channels. In most experiments, however, an otherwise insulating state is observed and is accounted for by lattice-scale interactions that promote a broken-symmetry state with gapped bulk and edge excitations. We tuned the ground state of the graphene zeroth Landau level to the topological phase via a suitable screening of the Coulomb interaction with a SrTiO$_3$ high-$k$ dielectric substrate. We observ…
A non-Hermitian extension of a Chern insulator and its bulk-boundary correspondence are investigated. It is shown that in addition to the robust chiral edge states that reflect the nontrivial topology of the bulk (nonzero Chern number), anomalous helical edge states localized only at one edge can appear, which are unique to the non-Hermitian Chern insulator.
We propose a versatile setup that allows performing spin-resolved spectroscopy of helical Andreev bound states, proving their existence and therefore the topological nature of the Josephson junction that hosts them. The latter is realized on the helical edge of a 2D topological insulator, proximitized with two superconducting electrodes. The spectroscopic analysis is enabled by a quantum point contact, which couples the junction with another helical edge acting as a spin-sensitive prove. By means of straightforward transport measurements, it is possible to detect the particular spin structure …
Time-reversal symmetry and rotational invariance in spin space characterize usual non-magnetic conductors. These symmetries give rise, at least, to four-fold degenerate multiplets which, by definition, exhibit a null total spin-momentum helicity. Thus, preventing a net spin transport. A proper choice of geometry along with the intrinsic symmetry of the Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit interaction can be exploited to effectively reduce these two spin-related symmetries to the timereversal one. It is shown that, in an ideal geometry, a quantum dot with contacts having a specific geometry exhibit a sing…
We study the kinetic magnetoelectric effect (current-induced magnetization including both the orbital and spin contributions) in three-dimensional conductors, specializing to the case of p-doped trigonal tellurium. We include both intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the effect, which stem from the band structure of the crystal, and from disorder scattering, respectively. Specifically, we determine the dependence of the kinetic magnetoelectric response on the hole doping in tellurium, and show that the intrinsic and extrinsic effects dominate for low and high levels of doping, respectively…
The interplay between real-space topological lattice defects and the reciprocal-space topology of energy bands can give rise to novel phenomena, such as one-dimensional topological modes bound to screw dislocations in three-dimensional topological insulators. We obtain direct experimental observations of dislocation-induced helical modes in an acoustic analog of a weak three-dimensional topological insulator. The spatial distribution of the helical modes is found through spin-resolved field mapping, and verified numerically by tight-binding and finite-element calculations. These one-dimensiona…
Three-dimensional topological solitons attract a great deal of interest in fields ranging from particle physics to cosmology but remain experimentally elusive in solid-state magnets. Here we numerically predict magnetic heliknotons, an embodiment of such nonzero-Hopf-index solitons localized in all spatial dimensions while embedded in a helical or conical background of chiral magnets. We describe conditions under which heliknotons emerge as metastable or ground-state localized nonsingular structures with fascinating knots of magnetization field in widely studied materials. We demonstrate magne…
A two-dimensional topological insulator (2DTI) has an insulating bulk and helical spin-polarised edge modes robust to backscattering by non-magnetic disorder. While ballistic transport has been demonstrated in 2DTIs over short distances, larger samples show significant backscattering and a nearly temperature-independent resistance whose origin is unclear. 2DTI edges have shown a spin polarisation, however the degree of helicity is difficult to quantify from spin measurements. Here, we study 2DTI few-layer Na3Bi on insulating Al2O3. A non-local conductance measurement geometry enables sensitive…
A two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric topological superconductor is a fully gapped system possessing a helical Majorana mode on the edges. This helical Majorana edge mode (HMEM), which is a Kramer's pair of two chiral Majorana edge modes in the opposite propagating directions, is robust under time-reversal symmetry protection. We propose a feasible setup and accessible measurement to provide the preliminary step of the HMEM realization by studying superconducting antiferromagnetic quantum spin Hall insulators. Since this antiferromagnetic topological insulator hosts a helical electron edge…
Majorana bound states are zero-energy excitations of topological superconductors which obey non-Abelian exchange statistics and are basic building blocks for topological quantum computation. In order to observe and exploit their extraordinary properties, we need to be able to properly manipulate them, for instance, by braiding a couple of them in real space. We propose a setup based on the helical edges of two-dimensional topological insulators (2DTI) which allows for a high degree of tunability by only controlling a handful of superconducting phases. In particular, our setup allows to move th…
We study the phase diagram and transport properties of arbitrarily doped quantum wires functionalized by magnetic adatoms. The appropriate theoretical model for these systems is a dense one-dimensional Kondo Lattice (KL) which consists of itinerant electrons interacting with localized quantum magnetic moments. We discover the novel phase of the locally helical metal where transport is protected from a destructive influence of material imperfections. Paradoxically, such a protection emerges without a need of the global helicity, which is inherent in all previously studied helical systems and re…
Skyrmions are topologically protected field configurations with particle-like properties that play important roles in various fields of science. Recently, skyrmions have been directly observed in chiral magnets. Here, we investigate the effects of nonmagnetic impurities (structural point-like defects) on the different initial states (random or helical states) and on the formation of the skyrmion crystal in a discrete lattice. By using first-principle calculations and Monte Carlo techniques, we have shown that even a small percentage of spin vacancies present in the chiral magnetic thin film af…
Domain walls formed by one dimensional array of vortex lines have been recently predicted to exist in disordered helical magnets and multiferroics. These systems are on one hand analogues to the vortex line lattices in type-II superconductors while on the other hand they propagate in the magnetic medium as a domain boundary. Using a long wavelength approach supported by numerical optimization we lay out detailed theory for dynamics and structure of such topological fluctuations at zero temperature in presence of weak disorder. We show the interaction between vortex lines is weak. This is the d…
